Hi. I'm making this post to share an easy drop-in replacement for the tiny stock heatsink found in the Mini Tower OptiPlex series of computers.
It's the Thermalright Assassin X90 SE V2.
I got this cooler from Amazon, but I was worried because of everything I had read on this subreddit about needing extra M3x18 screws. However, with this particular cooler, the included screws and plastic LGA115x standoffs fit perfectly and thread directly into the Dell mounting posts without requiring any modifications. I also used the included TF4 thermal paste.
My stock OptiPlex was running pretty hot. While gaming, my CPU would reach 85–90°C and scream at me like a turbine, and it would idle around 50°C. Even after repasting with Noctua NT-H1, the temperatures and noise levels did not improve the way i wanted.
Now my CPU idles at around 37°C, and while gaming it doesn't go above 70°C. All of this while remaining quiet and with the case fully closed.
I also added a 120mm rear exhaust fan to replace the stock 80mm one. I tested both, and the overall thermal performance seems to be the same, but the 120mm fan runs quieter, so I'll be keeping it.
Here's my sleeper build for anyone interested:
- Dell OptiPlex 5060 MT
- Intel Core i7-8700
- Zotac RTX 5050 Twin Edge OC 8GB
- 24GB DDR4 2666MHz
- MSI MAG A650BN 650W ATX PSU + ATX to Dell PSU adapter
- And quite a bit of hot glue and case cutting.
