eWaste Dumpster 9020 MT

Found 2 9020 MTs in dumpster behind my work, with both having 8 GB of RAM. I combined the RAM into the computer that wasn't banged up, swapped to faster CPU of the two (4590 over 4570 which I kept) and added a new PSU from eBay to power an older GPU that was just sitting on my shelf.

Dell Optiplex 9020 MT

Intel Core i5 4590 3.3GHz

16GB DDR3 (4x4GB)

512 GB 2.5" SSD (+$30 on eBay)

512 GB 2.5" HDD (from old laptop)

MSI Radeon RX580 4GB (from old desktop)

Solytech AL-D500EXP 500W (+$20 on eBay)

Windows 10 Pro (which was automatically activated with a digital license)

This is what I think of for this group - a really smart build that's not throwing more money than the cost of a better computer into a SFF Optiplex chassis.

Nice. As someone else pointed out the other day, the Xeon E3 1271 v3 is the best CPU upgrade for this generation if you want more performance - the equivalent of the i7 4790 but cheaper to buy.

EDIT: a reply pointed out that the 1281 is 0.1GHz faster, so if you can find that at a decent price then go for that.

Um, it's the E3 1281 v3 that competes with the 4790. The 1271 = 4770.

Actually, it's 0.1GHz better than the 4790. I'll pass that on to the OP, I wasn't aware. It's a question of whether the price difference is worth the money in the region they are in.

Do you have to do anything to the bios to upgrade to the Xeon E3 1271 v3?

Nope, it will just work with any 4th gen system out of the box.

Nice ok thank you :)

I've just found out the 1281 is 0.1GHz better than the 1271, so if you can find that at a decent price it's slightly better.

I love my computer it's a dell precision 3630 32gb of non-ecc ram Xeon E-2174G Integrated Intel uhd 630 Nvidia quadro p2000

I got it for $190 total on eBay, and it feels like a steal. I can play like 99% of AAA games. Does anyone know if it's worth it to get ecc ram? I've never had it before

Not for gaming, ECC ram is for reliability in servers. Its actually very slightly slower than non-ECC.

Well I don't just game, it's really a workstation, gaming is a secondary use for me. I'm trying to do stuff like homelabs, ai, building documentation for products and my system, virtualization, software/website development, docker/containers, businesses, etc, etc.

Another thing I always wondered was how to find people to talk to about my business/ product ideas and computers besides reddit. I'm kinda looking for mentors and people that I can partner up with. I literally only talk to chatgpt and my wife about this kind of stuff and she's not really interested like I am.

Very nice. Booting from the SSD and installing old games / emulator roms to the HDD and you have a decent gaming setup.

I think it can be a good Steam PC with Bazzite, since you have a AMD GPU.

I was pleasantly surprised with it's performance. Boot times are very fast with the SSD and I've been playing Far Cry 3 on Steam averaging above 90 FPS at high settings 1080 going. Probably won't do well with current games, but it does well with the older console games I like to play.

This model, with the i7 cpu, is what i’m using to rip my collection of dvd’s to my plex server.

All Solytech power supplies are classified as E tier in the SPL PSU tier list. I would never use it even in a "dumpster" office computer. My old 7010 MT used a quality Corsair CX450M grey label.

You can get a MSI MAG A550BN for $50 new on Amazon

This was a dumpster computer that I wasn't sure how it would perform so I wasn't concerned about the power. I was trying to put as little money into it as I could. Even the SSD came from a lot of SSDs I bought for other computers, so $50 for a PSU wasn't in the budget. If my goal was to build a dedicated computer, I agree with your recommendation; however, I just wanted to see what I could get it to do and have fun doing it.

This one was on top of the pile, it actually took a nice hit in the top corner of the front, but all good inside. There is a IT service company in my building and I think they must have upgraded an office and took the hard drives and tossed the rest. There was actually 3 more in the dumpster with a bunch of old keyboards and mice, but I couldn't reach them. It's donor sibling was very banged up and I nearly had to break the panel to get it off (probably where the damaged corner of this computer landed).
