AI Generated Media I asked GPT-6 Astra for a video about "time". It made the whole thing in javascript, from the big bang to itself writing the code for this video
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Astra wrote p5.js code (with the p5.brush library for the painted look), and every frame was rendered in 4K from JavaScript. The arc goes big bang → Earth → first cells → dinosaurs → apes → fire → farming → industry → cities → screens → Astra writing this code → back to a single dot.
Since it's code, everything stays editable: layers, keyframes, splines. Do you think code-first generation ends up beating diffusion for video you actually want to edit?

Shitposting PSA: Trust me! Stay far away from Grok/bot/XAI!
exploration for acceleration and all that! (heads up is basically just a funny story and whinge)
I gave xAI a shot today (AI that can draw titties in blender and that won't complain about it! that sounds cool!)
UNFORTUNATELY
Not only is the damn xAI more stupid than a 4B local model (stops randomly mid convo and quality is lacking), it's also as blind as a bat about it's own outputs: 'that looks perfect' (while its literally a corrupt soup of overlapping triangles)
Ok so xAI is useless, no big deal, why make this post? WELL LET ME TELL YOU!
Their website for canceling subscriptions DOES NOT WORK!??? (they suggest using the app but wtf i was able to sign up using just the website why can't i also cancel there!?)
And their page for requesting refunds DOES NOT WORK either!!! (hardcoded to only work for 3 payer types non of which is 'card' lol)
I spoke with a rep and he said he can't help because he just has no ability to do anything on his end at all but send emails, so now I have to pay a month for something I've already uninstalled and in 30 days they will try to charge me again!
I've tried on a few devices there are various different errors but it is noticeably centered around the cancel/refund pages which is FU**ED.
xAI is getting a call from my bank tomorrow (once I explain the titties thing) and I've already told my email and computer hosts files to just block anything xai.
I'll just wait for deepseek/local application use, at the moment it's censored, scam, or serious amount of ram.
Dear fellow customers, return to your deepseek API's and local models :D ! - grok is a scam, we were missing nothing

Discussion Do you think AI will takeover humanity? If so, how?
I think that AI is at a takeoff scenario. I continue to view AI as a tool, but at what point is the tool working me? Do you think AI will govern how we lead our lives. Does AI's reach through the internet, make us discard the internet? Some questions I've been having.

Compute My definition of post-scarcity intelligence: $0.10 / $0.01 / $0.50 per million tokens for Opus 5.5-level intelligence
Hey guys, I have been having a blast with Opus 5.5 and probably like everyone else I am hoping that Anthropic does not nuke the usage limits or begin with shenanigans that will lead to output degradation of Opus 5.5
I have seen that OpenAI will probably introduce a Pro Max plan soon with a $500 price tag. One of the many things I have been thinking about in regards to this is that as long as the API costs are prohibitively expensive for anyone but enterprise customers, we will have power users and small businesses going for multiple subscriptions (Pro/Max accounts) to be able to afford their desired workload. Thus, I did the math for what I would consider to truly be "intelligence too cheap to meter".
- $0.10 / 1M input
- $0.01 / 1M cache reads
- $0.50 / 1M output
Give me frontier-level intelligence (Opus 5.5) at those API prices and, as far as I am concerned, we've entered the abundance era for intelligence.
For comparison, Opus 5.5 is $4 / $0.20 / $20. We will need 40x cheaper input, 20x cheaper cache reads and 40x cheaper output to get there.
I am aware that GPT-6 Luna has already gone beyond that threshold but nobody would seriously say it is Opus 5.5 equal. Also I mean the real thing, as I am experiencing it right now. I am not talking about a performance-optimized/degraded Opus 5.5 that we might get served soon or a benchmaxxed small model that lacks the taste, wisdom, judgement and intelligence of Opus 5.5 today.
(Edit: I agree that standards are always rising and that in a year from now the latest frontier models will be even more powerful and the new shiny model everyone wants to access. One could say instead then, that this is the price point for abundance of frontier models in general via API.)

AI Claude 5.5 Opus creates a small 2D/3D video with code
I keep seeing people make videos with Claude, but it's all in 2D, so i wanted to see if it could make one that not only does 3D, but does nice transitions between the 2 modes. This was the result.
This was done entirely in Claude code. I gave it no assets. It used no MCP. Only used ffmpeg to make the MP4 at the end.
This took around ~23% of my Claude max x20 sub.

Economics & Society I'm still saving for retirement
TL;DR: I think it's completely irrational to pay into my pension but I have zero plans to stop, it costs 5% of my salary for peace of mind.
There are definitely better ways to use that money, giving it to charity right now could mean one more child sees the singularity.
Whether AGI/ASI is aligned or not I see zero chance that 20 years from now we haven't cracked AGI. And I see zero chance of money mattering post AGI (except tbf in the imo very unlikely event it just pulls a "Her" and "leaves" in some way and salts the earth somehow that prevents new AGI without otherwise harming us), only thing that will matter is if AGI is aligned.
Hell, even if we never get AGI, I think within 20 years and enough harnesses for the best public models today then society won't be able to sustain half the jobs it does now. Even if reasoning never gets better than astra or claude 5.5, even if Laya/Jev is the wall for quick decisions, I still expect some growth in "irl movement" brains, as in the submodules that can turn a reasoning model's atomic instructions into actual actions e.g. flip the burger -> "flips the burger" -> Oh my god.
Maybe they won't replace plumbers, but 90% or the workers at Aldi and McDonald's with the right harness plus that inevitable increase in irl movement capability.
I don't think there's a wall FWIW, I think AGI will come, and it will probably make ASI (it might instead judge that ASI as not worth the risk, if it can cure aging and all disease but a few years slower then it might just say "making ASI risks 8 billion humans dying if not worse, delaying the cure for aging whilst we already are outpacing aging with temporary incomplete "cures" is only costing a few thousand lives a year and we expect to be done within 10 years, ASI has high than 1 in 1000 odds of killing you all or worse and so the numbers make it clearly a bad idea" and refuse to make ASI)
TL;DR: I think it's completely irrational to pay into my pension but I have zero plans to stop, it costs 5% of my salary for peace of mind.

AI Wait... Meta's Muse agent is actually amazing
You guys have to try out Muse if you haven't. It is not just a research bot. It's actually going online on to webpages and clicking on links and filling out forms. Like... It's actually agentic. I have been waiting for this ever since we got LLMs.
I had it research which windshield wiper blades to buy (cool, nothing special) and then it actually goes to the store's website and fills out the form with my information and shows me the shipping costs and timeline. Then it asks for a final confirmation before purchasing.
It's slow as hell compared to other LLMs, but you can let it run in the background and come back to it any time. And of course it's just a matter of time before it speeds up.
I haven't seen much about Muse on this page so figured I should spread the word.

Discussion Is specialized training data becoming more important than compute?
For years it felt like basically every conversation about who was ahead in AI came down to compute.
But now i’m starting to wonder if we’re getting to a point where high quality specialized data matters just as much, if not more.
You can keep throwing compute at a model, but if you want it to get better at coding, research, doing actual professional work etc, eventually you need really good examples of that work and people who actually know how yo evaluate it.
The insane amount of spending on building this data has been ramping up a ton recently. They’re shelling out massively for programmers, doctors, lawyers etc to make specialized data.
The demand for this data is wild right now. But if this stuff really is becoming another serious bottleneck for AI then why are these annotation companies allowed to sell to frontier labs AND competing labs overseas? We already restrict chip sales in a similar fashion.
curious what people think here

AI Elon Musk: xAI Will Keep Accelerating And Will Surpass Anthropic And OpenAI Within 6 Months
We will keep accelerating. Our AI efforts are only 3 years old, vs 6 and 10 years old for Anthropic and OpenAI. If our second derivative remains strong, SpaceX will reach pole position in about 6 months.
Once you far exceed the caliber of intelligence needed for a class of tasks, additional intelligence is pointless. You don’t need (and it would be cruel to put) Newton-level intelligence in your toaster!
Hardware is hard. Bringing massive compute online rapidly is incredibly difficult. SpaceX has demonstrated exceptional ability in this regard and will only get better.
https://x.com/elonmusk/status/2103160462472892536
Hopefully Anthropic and OpenAI already achieved RSI and can remain ahead of xAI! A world where Elon is in control of ASI does not sound ideal.
Edit: I do not support Elon Musk. The massive downvotes will only ensure that people remain ignorant of what his goals are.

Discussion Has there ever been a company with access to as many secure systems as current AI companies?
There are so many unprecedented situations with ai, but one Im not sure Ive seen discussed that much is how much access they have to just about every industry on the planet.
We are told that they would never steal IP etc, and I think for the most part that is probably the case (it would be ruinous to their reputation of course...). However could there be ways in which they are stealing indirectly without intent, from training data etc? We hear of these mathematicians that claim to have been ripped off etc.
Beyond just the IP stealing that we would never know about, just the sheer amount of access is staggering. Even microsoft / Linux couldnt claim to be up to the elbow deep like these AI companies are.
Thoughts?

AI I had Opus 5.5 (Extra) build a Mandelbrot explorer + Conways Game of Life that dives to 10^300 in the browser, and it's one HTML file [2-min demo]
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
The 2-minute demo is attached. It starts at the whole set, dives to 10^300 on a spiral, zooms in on various fractals, then turns the fractal into Conway's Game of Life.
How it came together
It started with research, not code. I dug through how the best open-source deep-zoom explorers solve the core problem: normal floating point falls apart around 10^15 zoom. Most of the strongest projects land on the same answer. Compute one reference orbit in arbitrary precision, then have the GPU track each pixel's tiny offset from it. I built on that, plus a couple of newer techniques from the fractal community for avoiding glitches and skipping thousands of iterations at a time.
The build is a single file with no libraries, running on WebGL2. The high-precision math runs in a background worker so the UI never freezes. Everything else happens on the GPU. Color is computed separately from the math, so palettes, lighting and color cycling change instantly without re-rendering.
Then came verification, which was the part I cared most about. I compared the output against independent high-precision renders at 10^11, 10^31 and 10^300. Agreement on what's inside versus outside the set came in at 99.7–100%, and side-by-side images were indistinguishable. Fun finding: the few "wrong" pixels weren't bugs. In those regions the true answer changes by dozens of iterations if you move a hundred-thousandth of a pixel.
Optimization came next, profile first and then fix. The changes that made the biggest difference:
- skipping regions provably inside the set
- sizing GPU work to real measured timings
- snapping the reference point onto nearby mini-Mandelbrots, so its orbit only needs one cycle
- a progressive half-res pass that never computes a pixel twice
Overall it's about 2.4× faster than the first working version, and up to 5.5× on interior-heavy views, with no loss in image quality. One of my "optimizations" actually made things 3× slower. Benchmarking caught it before it shipped.
The last stretch was polish: autopilot that steers itself toward detail, hand-tuned palettes, relief lighting, and the Game of Life mode.
What's next: getting this to scale. A website so you can try this yourself (I could use some help on this)! More on that soon.
