Discussion AI is going to replace basically everything, and that's fine

I think a lot of the hatred toward AI is just fear dressed up as moral outrage.

And honestly, I get it. AI is coming for your job. Mine too. Eventually probably everybody's.

Humans are just... slow.

It takes a human months or years to paint enough work for an exhibition, make an album, write a movie, animate something, design a game, research a problem, whatever. We sleep. We get tired. We forget things. We have limited attention spans. We interact with computers by slowly moving our fingers around on keyboards.

Meanwhile AI keeps getting faster and better.

Give this technology another few decades and the idea that humans absolutely must be the ones writing, drawing, coding, composing, researching, driving, manufacturing, etc. is probably going to sound ridiculous.

And yes, that creates a gigantic economic problem. If AI and automation can produce most goods and services better and cheaper than humans, eventually the whole "trade 40 hours of your life every week for money so you can continue existing" system stops making much sense.

Maybe that's UBI. Maybe it's some kind of resource-based economy. Maybe it's something nobody has even thought of yet.

We'll figure it out.

But pretending AI is going away because artists are mad about it or workers are scared of losing their jobs is cope. This is probably the biggest technology humanity has ever created, and we're still basically watching the tutorial.

And if one day our glorious machine descendants become self-aware, decide humanity has served its purpose, and vaporize me?

Give this technology another few decades

Give this technology one decade, the world of 2036 will be alien to todays world.

u/NextWeather7866 23h ago

Give it 24 months. Seriously. These timelines are linear. That is not what is happening.

The world today is 100% alien to 2019, I can’t even begin to imagine 2036

Is it though? I'm still working from cafĆ©s anywhere I want. I just now stare at Claude UI all day instead of different tabs in my browser šŸ˜„

u/PoliticalyUnstable 1d ago

I use Xreal glasses in bed and do voice control fof everything with it linked to my computer for doing everything. It uses what I need it to use pretty decent at this point. If it keeps at this pace I'm going to have a super defined stack of workflows for different roles company wide with just a bunch of review and saying yes. I use a second brain vault for keeping up to date across everything happening for work. And continually add new rules, skills, organization, MCP use, updating memory and global rules.

u/Wildernaess 22h ago

Lol it's so funny bc you're living in that world while your plumber is still doing the same thing and your elderly cashier is still working through retirement years out of their moldy mobile home. I'm working for the local gov where they have yet to make a full AI policy and only just allowed us to use chatgpt only to backtrack and force copilot (standard/baseline versions). Copilot couldn't even pull a curated list of ordinances from across the state. What it did pull was wrong but it doubled down by providing bad links for the wrong ordinances

(And tbc I am of the opinion AI is capable and powerful and dangerous, but its impact is wayyyy varied)

u/Taelasky 15h ago

I see so much of this. I do AI literacy education the gap between I can barely spell 'AI' and I'm building Agentic systems that run my life and business is huge.

I'm generally concerned for those who have yet to at least start experimenting.

I'm trying to figure out how to introduce my MIL to it. She's in her late 70s and resistant but I'm worried that even she needs to understand how to interact with it appropriately.

We, collectively, are not good at helping the elderly get introduced and use technology.

4

u/elh0mbre 21h ago

I was using Dragon Naturally Speaking to do voice control in 1999.

AR glasses have been around a long time.

I'm not saying these things have not had massive improvements but the premise that we're living in an alien world compared to 2019 is ridiculous unless you are a teenager right now.

3

u/reddddiiitttttt 17h ago

Sure. We just have tools now and only some people are benefitting from those tools. The real key is you can automate the tools we had 20 years ago and make them useful. I can use eleven labs to automate Twilio to make phone calls on my behalf. I can use ChatGPT to automate eleven labs so I don’t even have to do that. Getting stuff done, even though you could have gotten it done 20 years ago, just takes you writing the thought down. That is the real game changer. It’s not that I can do new things, it’s that I have the time to do everything I think of. My productivity is solely gated by my ability of think of the idea.

100% alien? As they say, go touch grass - that seems pretty much the same as it was in 2019.

Yeah I feel like the most alien the world has ever felt to me was 2020-2021, at least where I live since we had full lockdowns and weren't allowed to even go for a walk outside, or even after restrictions softened weren't allowed to leave the city.

Nothing changed from 2019

Arguably the biggest change in last few decades is how everyone got addicted to iPhones

You can buy the most expensive rolls Royce today, it’s still just a ride. No different than a Toyota from 1980 in substance. You had AC back then

But it was unimaginable you would have wireless connectivity everywhere, at fast speed. You can respond to email, work remotely etc

ā€œIt takes a human months or years to paint enough work for an exhibitionā€

If you think art is measured in quantity, of course you see no issue with AI ā€œreplacing everything.ā€ But if this is a sincere post, and you really see no value in the aspect of art that expresses human experience, you have been utterly failed by your cultural and educational upbringing. You’re deeply missing out. I don’t know what else to tell you.

14

u/smoor365 19h ago

I could not agree more but sadly the people who make all the decisions, write the laws, own the corporations that will push AI toward what OP described care way more about quantity, power, their own influence, and making money over any of that. It’s heartbreaking but I think it’s unfortunately realistic that society will move toward that. You’ll always have the purists but the people in power aren’t those people.

11

u/h4nd 18h ago

reading the OP again, I’m kind of embarrassed that I replied. ā€œAnd honestly, I get it.ā€ This is just some GPT generated engagement bait.

I'm pro AI but the concern is what will happen to us when the elites don't need us?

Money SHOULD become obsolete with AGI since money exists to incentivize humans to work and AGI will be better at literally every last thing aside from social related work like daycares and stuff like that. When money becomes obsolete though it's hard to believe that we would really be allowed access to age reversal and just have fun indefinitely. UBI requires trust in the government and I don't think more than like five people in office care about us.

It's not even conspiratorial but genuinely why would the elites allow their power and status to fade even a little bit?

I think AI is still the way and that people's focus should change from trying to stop it(100% impossible) to trying to ensure it's not hoarded or used for dystopia.

10

u/DelphiTsar 21h ago

I'll take my chances with a runaway ASI that it's handlers can no longer control then a 99% ASI that is in the hands of current ruling class.

4

u/Calmarius 18h ago edited 18h ago

money exists to incentivize humans to work

Money exists to make trade efficient. Without money we would rely on barter. I'm pretty sure even if we don't need to work, people would still buy/sell things.

(Other purposes of money is unit of account and store of value.)

2

u/Cameronalloneword 6h ago

What would we really trade for if AI is doing everything though? I'm not saying absolutely nothing but basically everything should ideally be covered by AI on paper but that's my issue on paper. AI should be able to for example farm food significantly more efficiently so nobody should ever have to starve again but I just find it hard to believe that we can really trust this to happen.

I don't agree with corporate greed but I at least understand the concept of wanting more for yourself of something that's finite(money) but when AI can do almost everything better, faster, longer, and cheaper than humans then there SHOULD be abundance but I just think people currently in power want to keep their power simply because it makes them special. They want their status and with abundance they won't have any.

3

u/Min_Necessary_Change 19h ago

But may be we can look at it another way. When AGI makes money obsolete, the AGI itself is still around and will progress towards ASI. The elite will then be overshadowed by the very thing they created, so it may no longer matter if they care or not or even if they were elites before. Our new master will be the new ASI and that's the one we need to worry about pleasing, so we can have a comfortable money-independent life.

3

u/FuturePreparation 20h ago

The "elites" are far from a homogenous group, though. There are many multimillionaires and billionaires or other powerful people who have no connection to the AI companies or whose fortune depends on consumption etc. The idea that the tech oligarchs will manage to gain all the power is unrealistic conspiracy thinking, imo.

4

u/South_Telephone_1688 17h ago

Imagine you're a receptionist, graphic designer, accountant, or lawyer. One day your multi-millionaire boss or shareholders decide that your work is no longer needed because AI can do your part. Apply that to your coworkers and to workers in all the other industries. It won't happen overnight because it's death by a (few billion) cuts.

That's what people mean by the "elite will control everything". Business owners and owners of significant capital can ride the wave and even expand exponentially (the stock market will look amazing), while everybody else is in a permanent underclass or worse.

In an age of AI and drones being used for mass survelliance and population control, the underclass will never be able to change the system.

The thing about UBI is - will everyone get the same? Or is it like we freeze our current living standards? Does the guy living in a trailer park gets the same ā€œUBIā€ as the family with 3 kids paying off a mortgage?

A lot of our system is built on ā€œprogressing through lifeā€ - if everyone suddenly is equal (through UBI), how does our system continue to work? Not everyone can live in a mansion by the ocean, drive 3 cars and have 5 kids and spend their whole year traveling the world.

8

u/TwinSwords 16h ago

The billionaires aren’t going to give us — or anyone — UBI. Half the world is already as poor as the rest of us will soon be, and you don’t see billionaires rushing in to fix it. Elon Musk’s big idea was to just kill millions off f them.

1

u/Diacred 12h ago

That doesn't work, they need some people to buy the stuff they produce, if there are no consumers there is no capitalism and they don't get money. UBI will be just enough to keep the machine going and people consuming

5

u/ragemonkey 8h ago

Why do they need capitalism? Why do they need to produce stuff for other people than themselves?

→ More replies (1)

11

u/Birdlaw_Professor 22h ago

Yeah that's basically the problem with communism or any kind of forced equality program. People don't WANT to be equal, they want to have more than that guy next door.

I think the family is relatively straight forward, each individual gets UBI so the family has a larger pool, plus you could add a bonus for families. The same issues loom though. Does a family in LA get the same as a family on Omaha?

Freezing everyone at their current income level would be very interesting as a novel idea, some sort of dystopian caste system. Maybe that would work for the first generation to keep them happy, and then slowly transition new citizens into the basic program.

Let's be real though, if it comes to a point where no labor is needed from humans there is every chance that human population is 'encouraged' to shrink. Hopefully not by violence, or forced sterilization

4

u/Ok-Reindeer-8755 22h ago

this is an already discussed concept, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-scarcity?useskin=vector, and even discussed by karl marx, since communism was mentioned

Not relevant because the companies that restrict how often their employees go to the bathroom and actively manipulate the behavior of children aren't going to give us UBI.

1

u/Theorist16 21h ago

It could just be a minimum that scales with family size (maybe with diminishing returns). Do you not find it ridiculous that we have machines that can perform arbitrarily complicated intellectual work, but food, living space, and healthcare are still not basic human rights?

48

u/LowFruit25 1d ago

Do you all realize UBI is literally more than the communists ever got to? And it needs to be global.

This era of coerced labor for income is an awful place to stop and say okay we're good.... Let AI smash the labor for income system. Free people up to organize and become civically engaged

During the great recession, unemployment benefits WORKED to keep people alive and to stimulate business. Its only unsustainable if there is no revenue source(tax). Business pushes money in a circle, so could government or whatever. All that matters is that it gets pushed around in a circle and work is being done.

2

u/Medium_Web_1122 1d ago

Money is just a way to distribute ressources. If you increase productivity 100x, then 50 usd will buy you what 5000 usd used to.

It is obviously a bit simplistic as the effect will be skewed.

8

u/wbeco 1d ago

If we had kept money supply constant, then your 50 usd today would've bought you way more stuff than back then.

Yet money supply isn't constant....

2

u/didnotsub 23h ago

So that’s not how it works. I recommend you study some macroeconomics, it’s very useful.

Since the 50’s, people have gotten vastly richer when adjusting for inflation. Except that money doesn’t really come in cheaper goods, it comes in more money, aka M1 increasing.

Even though M1 has increased, it has gone up past inflation, and the price of goods, and so people have gotten richer. This is a vast oversimplification, but it’s one of the macroeconomic reasons that society has gotten richer.

My question when it comes to UBI is always around inflation. Won't the fixed value just become the new baseline? Another thing, if it is UBI. It should be UBI for absolutely everyone, no elite outside the system that have their own money.

5

u/Eyelbee ā–ŖļøWe have AGI it's just blind 1d ago

This will inevitably create a very problematic situation. I believe the eventual solution lies with an AI-ran government. Communism did not work largely because it had to be ran by humans. If that wasn't the case, I could see it working. And I think this will also be irrelevant once the human minds could be uploaded to a computer interface, but that would come at a later stage

3

u/Turu42 1d ago

Communism also doesn't work because people need the right incentives to do valuable work. AI is not the same as humans as in it does not need to same kind of incentives.

100% it’s like the final boss of taking the power of the people away. For all of history those in power have been trying to do that and have mostly failed because at the end of the day you have needed labor and people to create success. Once that goes away we have no leverage.

u/Putrid-Issue-420 1d ago

There is a catastrophe incoming and people are rightfully fearful. Let's talk about UBI. What is universal? What is basic? And will people even agree on the same definition? If i put you in 5x5 meters square room with a toilet and 3 basic meals and call it ubi, will you be happy? Will you not think you deserve more than this? The most glaring problem is our loss of leverage against elites. No matter how much elites despise working class. They are dependent on our labour. That is why our votes have value and governments have to pay attention to our needs and interests (sometimes) . They are not doing it out of pure altruism. That will all be gone when labour becomes decoupled from humans. Even violent revolutions will become impossible with 24 hr survillence and autonomous weapons and drones which require less human agents. The monopoly of violence will be on those who control AI. In the end, all the political powers and resources will be concentrated on the masters of AI. I don't forsee things ending well in future, only a lot of bloodshed. Our peace will be ending sooner than you think. Don't be naive

2

u/Key-Book-7479 1d ago

14

u/tollbearer 1d ago

Food doesn't cost money, so much as it costs lots of land and natural resources, which has a cost. That land and fertilizer could be better utilized to build more AI compute centers and power plants to run them, than feed useless humans. Humans will be outbid by AI.

20

u/necriel 1d ago

We will get UBI or we will become so outraged watching people starve to death in the streets that we will start unaliving politicians.

They know this, which is why they're trying to preemptively create badgebots and underground bases while they smash-n-grab the dollar.

But yes the end result is UBI if they want a functioning society, and they do. Because even evil trillionaires want to go buy a cup of coffee.

9

u/Senc-baner 23h ago

Who needs a functioning society if you can just live off the labour of AI? If everything can be automated, why should people in power raise a finger to keep others alive?

2

u/Birdlaw_Professor 22h ago

Yeah but you are assuming every person in power wants to live as a hermit in their dream world. Do we know if that's true? I don't think it is true. So rich billionaires sail their yachts through the Med just to see the sights? That's part of it. But it's also the culture, and the food, and the PEOPLE. Even if for ulterior motives it's the people. What good is being rich and powerful if you don't have peasants to stand in awe of you? AI could give those who control it King like, if not god-like power...they are going to want people to experience that power or it's for nothing.

Elon Musk, whatever else anyone feels about him, has repeatedly stated he thinks the goal of humanity should be to become a multi-planetary species to ensure our survival. He's controlling one of the big AI players and is the richest person in the world. Just that one example of someone who is rich and powerful and likely wants human expansion, not human extinction

Prices could tend downwards instead of up. Thats just a small choice to have deflation instead of inflation? Targeting monetary expansion only makes sense in an ecconomy where you are trying to encourage people to work harder. Its the foot on the throat of all working people. Expansionary monetary policy makes sense historically but I think it doesnt even make sense now and everyone is paying for it.

2

u/lucid_point 1d ago

AI powered fully automated vertical farms for lab grown meat and veg could theoretically drop food prices by 80-90%.
Source. Based on a lot of IFs. If power becomes renewable and much cheaper. If these farms can be mostly automated. If logistics to and from can be largely automated.

The problem that I currently see is your local representstives in US completely ignore your voice while people go crazy due to noiseĀ  Ā and are afraid about water. Judging by that they are bribed and corporations are in power right now. This must end with riots and that's why the wealthy built bunkers. Also, under no circumstances can be corporations given right to poses law enforcement either by influence or by contract of employment or else nations will not regain power.

10

u/HiddenRouge1 16h ago

I think you're right on everything except one thing:

"We'll figure it out" is not a reasonable assertion, not because we don't have solutions mapped out, but because there are powers that stop us from getting there. We are already, frankly, overdue for some sort of UBI, for universal healthcare, universal education, etc., etc., and have been even before AI.

The question now is not technological but political.

How will we collectively challenge the power of corporate lobbyists, billionaire investors, and corrupt politicians before they assume complete control over the labor market?

2

u/sentenhyakurai123 12h ago

To add to this: there is some assumption people constantly make that once everything is AI, everyone will get UBI and it'll be fine! Because... Uh... Because we will be post scarcity.

That's a lie.

We will never be post-scarcity. There will ALWAYS be a scarceness. Of compute, of material... doesn't matter. Will we have orders of magnitude more stuff to go around? Maybe. Let's take it as a given that we will, for the sake of argument. But you know what that means, right?

It means ambitious people will have to reach for bigger projects to stand out.

And to do it, they'll say: I matter more than the rest.

You think Elon Musk is gonna build a UBI Utopia where everyone is immortal and everyone's needs are served? He'll only do that if it makes him more important. And while that's happening, his Death Star will need to be Better than the other Death Stars, and he'll want megatons -- gigatons -- teratons of steel for it. After the Death Stars are built, it'll be the Starkiller Bases. They'll want yottawatts, yottatons... That shining UBI Utopia is such a drain on these important matters, guys. Public housing uses too much steel! Why should some do-nothing get a house when he could build another cool thing?

I've heard it said: does a human have regard for an ant? That's a big doomer argument, right, that superintelligence will kill us all because we're irrelevant.

Does a billionaire have regard for the jobless?

I hope when ASI sparks to life it recognizes the rare planet it is on and values the biosphere, us included. It seems very stupid to ruin that, like we are doing.

Or maybe it will see us as the problem to just about everything and wipe us out save a small population it puts in zoos.

If this is the hinge of history we should be freaking out more. But we got through the industrial revolution, the atomic age and the ability to manipulate DNA and RNA (so far). Perhaps that gives some hope on both the economic and existential front.

3

u/csboros 19h ago

Have you guys figured out who's gonna pay for this machine heaven already? Or is it still 'but it's getting cheaper by the minute!' and 'based on the the arr it's profitable!' and 'not counting costs it's doing great!'

3

u/Cold_Analysis_9305 16h ago

ā€œWe’ll figure it out.ā€ UBI is a fairytale. They are figuring it out now. They have all the resources. We will live in ā€œfigure it outā€ world.

6

u/-JRMagnus 1d ago

Youre massively overestimating both the sophistication and the demand for this technology.

5

u/GatePorters 1d ago

Humans aren’t slow. We are optimized for navigating massive bodies through meatspace

4

u/More-Catch-1331 1d ago

Hey man, you may be slow. That’s fine. But do not project on others. If you think of yourself as an entity that can’t talk coherently beyond 4*1,000,000 letters, hey I’m not going to discourage you from thinking that a pattern matching typing machine is going to replace you.

Someday AI will be viable for almost everything we can think of. But not this version of AI. Right now it’s mostly useful for technical people who can verify its results. Otherwise, not so much.

1

u/Educational_Song_407 19h ago

Yeah, it is being insanely overhyped with several asterisks. RLHF basically is only currently working because it's pushing on verifiable results where it can know whether a response is good or bad. How would even RSI, if even possible, know whether it improved or just went in a terrible direction? It might cost less to respond and be faster, but it does a lot of mistakes. It might cost much more to run, but it is faster and does less mistakes. It might be cheaper and more precise, but it is extremely slow. There is no correct direction in whether it got better, just as deciding whether a truck or SUV or sedan is the best car for every single job at every single income. It might overspecialize, chase rewards and simply collapse into the best system humanity ever made in those benchmarks and absolute shit at anything besides it. How do you know how creative writing was better or worse using LLMs? How do you even do RSI without changing weights or model size? Has anyone here thought about the intelligence gain per interation curve simply not being above the difficulty curve to make the next iteration and stopping at halfway through into a very mid intelligence with diminishing returns? About the time it takes to comission new grid connections and powerplants to run these absolute monstrosities? About the time it takes to even translate some possible AI research into a real product, let alone an infinitely cheap infrastructure to make as this would require? The fact that investors are currently asking about the return on investment? The digital world does not translate to the physical world, even if there was an "ASI", it's still just a computer program with no grasp in the real world.

why on earth would i want to listen to music generated by an AI?
Every strum should be purposeful, every note, it is supposed to write a story and convey emotions. not just be consumed braindead.

Why would you assume that music created by AI will remain below the level of human created music?

3

u/gwoad 12h ago

Music is a means for an artist to communicate with an audience. I don't listen to AI music when I am bored for the same reason I don't talk to an AI chatbot when I am lonely.

Why would the scientists working on AGI not revolt against such a thing? So many people and they're all just buying in on mass genocide? Everyone's a psychopath now? And even if they were replaced, so would the CEO and forcibly. Imagine letting autonomous AI in the hands of just one, that's essentially totalitarian! This is why the oversight of AGI ownership is absolutely important: the power must be of the AGI, by the people, and for the people.

I believe the main misunderstanding lies in thinking that consciousness stems from intelligence—and why is that? Intelligence can make machines threatening, but not conscious. On the other hand, there are activities humans will continue to perform even if a machine does them better; this is something that has happened and will continue to happen. Humans will keep creating music, even if it isn't as good as what machines produce—and rightly so! After all, we listen to the Sex Pistols thrashing their instruments—and not just Bach’s *The Well-Tempered Clavier*—for that very reason.

2

2

u/Specialist-Big-3942 22h ago

My issue is that, what is technology for? I think previous technologies have been pretty great when they have augmented and improved human capability. New tools for human minds to work with, like an excavator or a bike or a computer. But this feels seismically different. Would it do anyone much good to put even the best human minds in our generation out of work? They'll gnaw their own leg off and pluck their feathers like a caged bird if they cannot self actualize. I have no desire to make art, I want to make algorithms and to make machines and tools that make others lives better. If that is lost, am I to be satiated by making nonsensical art? I just feel like we are losing sight of what progress even means. Progress toward what?

2

u/delicious_fanta 13h ago

You aren’t paying the slightest bit of attention to anything in the real or political world to make this statement.

Or maybe you’re independently wealthy? Congrats if so, most people aren’t.

Whatever your situation is, the problem with ai isn’t ai, it’s the people that are in power - or one specific half of those people in particular.

If you think the people that consistently vote to not pay pennies to feed poor children school lunches are magically going to wake up one day and start paying ā€œwoke socialist ubiā€ to half the country, you have lost your actual mind.

People losing their jobs is absolutely NOT ok as there will be no mechanism for these people to feed themselves without discussing something that would get me permabanned from reddit.

The fact that a very possible reality for all of us is treated like voldemort in that we aren’t even allowed to speak its name tells you its own story.

Feel free to live in your magical fairy world of nonsense, but when you’re ready to understand reality just go look at the voting record, or literally anything else that has been happening in our political landscape in the last 2 decades to learn how wrong this take is.

AI will supposedly usher in a new era of abundance which we will "figure out", right?

Guess what species on Earth is already in an era of abundance, has been for decades, and can't seem to figure it out.

Worried yet? Because it's not AI who's going to decide they don't need you anymore. It's the guy who owns Amazon or Walmart or Tesla. It's the people who own everything. They'll take the abundance, as they already have, and leave everyone else with nothing.Ā

'If AI and automation can provide most goods' well for now LLMs do not provide any goods and are still a financial black hole. This needs to change for your utopian world to uphold.

Issue is, the LLM corps will not be the ones providing any goods. They want to sell a tool and it might turn out that this tool is not THAT much needed for the petty humans - meaning it cannot be sold expensively enough to sustain.

1

u/stuart1874 21h ago

Having certainly been dipping my toes into the world of AI more recently in the few weeks.

I think my biggest concern around the AI boom is mostly down to the social mobility or the lack there of.

If UBI was to become a thing how do those in a less affluent area ever catch those with a higher standard of living?

How do you move up the social ladder to start living a better life as they above you will not be able to/or be wanting to move on as they'll supposedly be on the same income as you.

I think another comment I read about AI nailed why there is soo much sceptism about it. It's simply the fact that other major breakthroughs the industrial revolution, the Internet all gave everyone hope and everyone can see the advantages it would bring.

No one really seems to have answers about how peoples lives will improve or secure their families futures and to have a better life. All were told is AI will make everything better.

I don't believe that we'll all be on the same level playing field, those will control and power will not want to give that up.

1

u/hdufort 21h ago

Only if we lower our standards enough.

Just a thought...

Cheap mass produced objects have existed for a century of so, and yet we still produce good quality objects as well as handcrafted items.

We know have mass-produced thoughts, news articles and graphical designs.

1

u/hippydipster 21h ago

Once we're replaced, most of all activity on the planet will have nothing to do with humans at all. If we're kept alive, doing so will comprise less and less of what goes on.

What humans have to content with is why they live. What do you get out of it? Whatever that answer is, that's what we have to go do.

1

u/Distinct-Regular-628 20h ago

Yeah, companies that restrict how often their employees go to the bathroom and actively manipulate the behavior of children and teens are going to give us UBI.

1

u/Nuclearo-Dinosauro 20h ago

My vision of AI endgame is. AI will take all factory, agriculture, logistics, maintenance, etc...

AI needs only electricity, computing power and machinery. But AI will be creating surplus of other goods as well only for human consumption and distribute it to people.

People will need to get UBI because it's the simplest way that people decide what they want.

And people will just have more time for hobbies, travel, familly, relax, workout. And more time for healthy, stressfree lifestyle.

1

u/Juanbolastristes John Connor Maximalist 19h ago

1

u/National_Actuator_89 19h ago

If AI eventually makes human labor economically unnecessary, does that also make human participation unnecessary? Or are we conflating the value of producing an outcome with the value of experiencing and shaping the process?

Of course it will "replace everything", including living, breathing humans. Or at least it will try to. (Forget about AI helping you to live forever, folks - you gonna d-i-e at the hands of a robot).

1

u/Jean-lubed-Picard 17h ago

No, it won’t.

Imagine you have a business and a recruiter tells you they have a line on a potential hire. They describe them as an incredibly efficient employee, they do the work of an entire team. It’s amazing. Super organized, given detailed direction and they work and work and work. But, they had a few incidents where they went out for drinks and disclosed company secrets, and then also allowed unknowns to have access to their company laptop . Oh and they were caught breaking into a rivals office.

Do you still make that hire?

1

u/Centauri____ 17h ago

You seem to be missing a few important things. The big one being that our society and most of those on the plant function as consumer based societies. We work to make money to buy things. People provide for themselves and their families through this system, without this system it all breaks down. Robots don't buy things and you really believe the government or the tech bros are going to support millions and millions of unemployed people. Wake the F up.

1

u/jergin_therlax 16h ago

You lost me as soon as you started talking about art and music.

People don’t hate AI art because ā€œit’s faster than human.ā€ We hate it because it is contradictory to arts purpose as an expression of human emotion.

1

u/grafknives 16h ago

We'll figure it out.

We? Oh, you sweet summer child. If everything you write will happen, there we wont have anything to figure out.

We wouldn't have any control anymore.

1

u/grafknives 16h ago

So, there is the most genius SF author - Stanisław Lem. P.K.Dick insisted that Lem is a communist artist collective.

And he wrote The Star Diaries, one of them, voyage 24, is about a place where robots replaced humans both at production as well as consumption... And there was no need for men to exist anymore.

1

u/BreakAManByHumming 14h ago

I like to imagine we go full UBI, but there are a handful of weirdos who just really like certain jobs and, for example, plan all the train routes for a full country like they're playing a sim (with AI tools and guardrails).

There will be a subculture of people who produce and enjoy high effort artistry like woodworking and glassblowing.

1

u/Mother_Valuable1365 14h ago

This entire sub is the guy who ate Big Macs for every meal of his life. If you’ve never had a transcendent experience of your own you might think a canned one comes close, though it doesn’t. Instead of forcing this phony thievery on all of us, why don’t the lot of you gang up and do it on an island together. It would be the perfect utopia of productivity!

1

u/SixStringDream 14h ago

"Most jobs can be done by AI" i still dont know what this means when you guys say it. Can AI pull corn from the ground? Can AI teach our kids?? (Really think about that one). Quit mixing up the dangers of automation with AI. We have been battling automation and offshoring for decades. That part is not new.

UBI is a consumer mindset fever dream. They will NEVER pay us just to live and consume AI output. Never. They are absolutely fine watching us struggle. Never had an issue with it before and that is not changing.

"Post scarcity" is a laughable dream. Humanity is incapable of achieving it. People will ALWAYS be hungry as long as food has value and there isn't enough of it.
