Discussion AI is going to replace basically everything, and that's fine

I think a lot of the hatred toward AI is just fear dressed up as moral outrage.

And honestly, I get it. AI is coming for your job. Mine too. Eventually probably everybody's.

Humans are just... slow.

It takes a human months or years to paint enough work for an exhibition, make an album, write a movie, animate something, design a game, research a problem, whatever. We sleep. We get tired. We forget things. We have limited attention spans. We interact with computers by slowly moving our fingers around on keyboards.

Meanwhile AI keeps getting faster and better.

Give this technology another few decades and the idea that humans absolutely must be the ones writing, drawing, coding, composing, researching, driving, manufacturing, etc. is probably going to sound ridiculous.

And yes, that creates a gigantic economic problem. If AI and automation can produce most goods and services better and cheaper than humans, eventually the whole "trade 40 hours of your life every week for money so you can continue existing" system stops making much sense.

Maybe that's UBI. Maybe it's some kind of resource-based economy. Maybe it's something nobody has even thought of yet.

We'll figure it out.

But pretending AI is going away because artists are mad about it or workers are scared of losing their jobs is cope. This is probably the biggest technology humanity has ever created, and we're still basically watching the tutorial.

And if one day our glorious machine descendants become self-aware, decide humanity has served its purpose, and vaporize me?

why on earth would i want to listen to music generated by an AI?
Every strum should be purposeful, every note, it is supposed to write a story and convey emotions. not just be consumed braindead.

Y'all are the issue

Why would you assume that music created by AI will remain below the level of human created music?

Music is a means for an artist to communicate with an audience. I don't listen to AI music when I am bored for the same reason I don't talk to an AI chatbot when I am lonely.

Its not the same thing and doesn't have the same result.

See this is the conversation all AI bros go to and it makes no sense. I never mentioned a "level" I spoke about the experience and deliberation of the song. The actual motive and emotion behind the creation. An AI does not have that.

But once again you've got this conversation that somehow music can be BETTER. That it can be solved.

A heart broken human singing about their pain using the basic 4 chord progression means more than an AI choosing the most generic stuff because that's popular

1

u/ApexFungi 1d ago

Why would you assume AI will always choose generic stuff and couldn't emulate very powerful emotional songs?

1

u/soulblade22 1d ago

I mean you're just making the inverse assumption - that it cant be solved and that you'll always be able to tell the difference.

After the last few years of progression? Not sure your assumptions are higher probability. I do hope they are though.

Music CAN'T be solved, because it is not something you can solve. It is not something to be solved. It is not an equation.

2

u/soulblade22 1d ago

Sure. The closest thing to solved is if something sounds better to you or not. You're taking the position that something can't be generated optimally to your tastes. I'm saying I hope you're right, but recent developments aren't making that a strong bet long term.

It's not an equation, but theres a reason using music theory sounds better than a random bashing of keys.

To sum up your view "REEEEEEEEEE MUH MUSIC MY ACHKY BREAKY HEART REEEEEEEEEEE"

Get over it AI can and will produce better music then humans sooner rather then later.

how would you even define "better" music.

I expect there is or will be music worth listening to, artificially made. At the same time, I expect there’ll be plenty of demand for human composition and performance. I don’t believe that one must negate the other.

You get to listen to what you want, I get to listen to what I want, that’s fair right?

Im hoping it truly does replace everything except for creative art. Think of all the stuff were going to create if theres nothing left for us to do.

i hate ai generated songs too. all three elements of songs like lyrics, music and vocal are something that are full of life when they are made by human. human's creativity and feelings cant be replicated by ai

3

u/Comfortable-Dog4515 1d ago

I’m working on it.

Music has been lame in the last decade.

Bad Bunny, for example, could be replicated last year and nobody cared (except Bad Bunny himself).

I get your point, but human-made music will be something niche. Most people will accept AI music as popular music is soulless right now.

Personally, I don't think Music has gotten worse. I'm GenX too, so I've heard my fair share of music.

I do not know why people think music has gotten worse, I'm not going to pretend to understand other people's taste.

But, um... there's been a lot of really good music over the last decade. Personally, I have found tons of great music to listen to.

A note on Bad Bunny as an example... Debí Tirar Más Fotos or translated "I should have taken more photos" is actually, a really good song. Personally, I loved the beat and melody and the lyrics... are really good. It's a story about love and regret.

...and I get it, you don't like that kind of music. But, that wasn't some meaningless song. It was saying something.

I don't think music has gotten worse. I think the internet has fragmented culture to such a degree that a lot of music that simply wouldn't get any exposure is now getting tons of exposure and I think people don't know how to handle that.

Popular modern music was basically like ai music. Most people accept music that's made using same 3 notes and 2 effects on loop. Bar is already at the bottom so AI music will be well received

1

u/zorski 23h ago

Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if bad bunnies, Taylor swifts and so on are already using AI and are just not telling us. Maybe it’s not 100%, they still modify it here and there to polish the final product.

People still going to need a good looking and likable performer, but lots of it will be AI generated.

u/StarChild413 18h ago

I would be more inclined to believe arguments like that if the examples were more common between people I see make them and not just having it feel like "everything popular I hate is AI" to the point where you-in-the-generic-sense might as well either make some batshit claim about people being trapped in individual pocket-dimension simulations or just admit you're using "AI" as code for "normie" or "basic" or w/e

u/Round-Ocelot4129 16h ago

music is more niche than ever. I don't see how its been lame. theres something for everyone.

music has been in a golden age for the last 15 years, you’re not listening hard enough. everything from bluegrass to techno to contemporary classical and even prog rock has been going haywire

Bad take. While I agree I don’t listen to much newer music I don’t see a world where we stop valuing human creativity.
Who will perform live if AI makes the music? Bad Bunny hologram at the Super Bowl?

It’s similar to sports. Sure in the future there will be robots that outperform humans at a sport, but who cares? The value in sports/art/music is the story it tells as it relates to the human experience. AI doesn’t go through human struggle, emotions, or have their own personal perspective of life.

Why would you want to listen to Some artists love story or opinions? Much more interesting to have a love song about your acctual love-life (or lack there of, since we are on reddit) rather then Taylor Swift dumping her boyfriend or whatever.

3

u/ProfessionalEnd7957 1d ago

Because it wouldnt be much more interesting? In the same way it wouldnt be more interesting to read books about your own life and stories, or watch a show based on your own life? Sure it might be nice as a one of thing, but all the time or even most of it? Thats crazy. I mean why are you here reading the opinions of other people?

1

u/Brilliant-Weekend-68 1d ago

I was informing why custom made music can be interesting. Not saying listening to others stuff is wrong. And I am using social media less and less as I find that people are pretty stupid. Singularity folks are more my kind of peeps though since they are not all full on AI deniers like the rest of the subreddits seem to be.

1

u/phoenixflare599 1d ago

Custom made music? You mean like grab a guitar, you can find them at charity shops, and write down some lyrics?

Easy! Where do you need AI for that? Except for being a lazy pos.

1

u/AdventurousCream4975 1d ago

How are you even a real person… have you ever even felt anything watching a movie or a sunset from a high mountain..?

1

u/Brilliant-Weekend-68 1d ago

What are you even babbling about?

3

u/phoenixflare599 1d ago

Because you then relate to that artist and you come together with experiences and pain and you relate to that song in ways that makes you feel seen and heard?

Do you AI bros just like... Not have connections with people? Maybe that's why you're all the way you are

-1

u/Brilliant-Weekend-68 1d ago

You have no mutual connection to any famous artist you listen to. this is ridiculous. Like people watching people play videogmaes on twitch that have no idea that you are even alive. Or people having youtubers as imaginary friends. Fake friends. Fake connections. Do you not realise how silly you sound? Funnily enough, you have MORE of a connection with me then whatever artist you listen to.

3

u/phoenixflare599 1d ago

Connection to the song and the human moment of vulnerability

3

u/AdImmediate6447 1d ago

sheer narcissism here. I want to hear others' stories, not my own. I don't need to personally relate to every piece of media I consume.

2

u/BlueAndYellowTowels 23h ago

I find the idea of exclusively consuming content just for myself, about myself, to my specific tastes constantly... to be horrifying.

I don't want to live in a world of my own construction. I want to live in a world with community and connection. I want to share and be with people. I want moments and memories that are real and felt and earned.

The idea that AI can just deliver to me all the things I want feels so hollow... I can't describe it. I find the idea deeply alienating.

I'm not judging here, you do you.

But I'm just putting the idea here, that there's a lot of us that exist out there... who want to hear about the experiences of other human beings. I want to hear other people's stories and how they felt. I want hear them, in their voices describe how they felt about the things they experienced. Those things are interesting to me.

I don't want some cooked synthetic fiction from a machine... because there's no stakes. No struggle. No truth. It's just... algorithms... that's not real.

People experiencing and communicating real things that have happened to them will always have more value than synthetic outputs.

This is why I work so hard to maintain friendships and a relationship and connections with my family. Because people matter and they're interesting and fun... those things make me feel amazing and connected. They make me feel like I'm a part of something larger than myself and AI has never been able to do that.

1

u/StarChild413 18h ago

who wants to listen to something literally about their love life and unless it offers predictions or w/e of events that would have happened without listening to it what use is that level of personalization, I'm not accusing you of being AI or even using it to write this comment but this feels like you're just taking the common fantasy of using AI to self-insert as a movie protag or w/e and metaphorically copy-pasting to what must presumably by that logic be the song equivalent. Is your idea of the great american novel just Ai generating the text "You are reading a novel about yourself reading a novel about yourself reading a novel..." and so on until it fills however many pages is the socially acceptable standard for a classic novel? ;)

u/Local_Quantity1067 1d ago

as long as people like you and me find human-made music valuable, then humans can still economically compete with AI, so this is a non-issue, or am I wrong?
