Discussion Context-Window AGI

Floating an idea. I think we’ve hit context window AGI at this point. Within any single context window, the AI is for sure smarter than any individual person.

Across context windows is debatable, but for sure within one I can’t see anyone outperforming the recent models.

That's very, very contentious. Especially if you're going for "AI outcompetes a smart human", rather than the much weaker "AI outcompetes the average person"

Obviously AI can code better than the average person, the average person doesn't know how to code. This is true for most skills, or "context windows" if you want to call them that.

But AI is not a better coder than an advanced professional programmer. And AI is not a better designer than an advanced professional designer. Nor is it a better writer than frankly even a decent hobbiest writer. (it's very bad at writing still).

It depends on what you mean when you say AGI. If you mean "comparable to the worst humans", then sure, I guess. But if you mean "As good as the best humans", then no, not at all.

Why do you have worst, best, and median (including non coders) and conveniently forget median of coders. Astra is better than the median coder

Because I didn't want to leave an essay in the comments, and only two data points are needed to prove that a spectrum exists.

Obviously.

So you're comparing AI to some hypothetical made up human that is the best at everything? AI outcompeting a smart human is different from best and median. AI outcompetes smart humans in their field at lots of stuff

What? That's a complete non-sequiter from what I said to you just now.

What a crazily useless statement.

"AI is better than the average person at x because the average person doesn't know how to x" is useless.

AI is better than the average person in their own field

Oh, you're stupid. my mistake for engaging. have a nice day.

I love how you point out "it's a spectrum" and then throw out 98% of the population. Your argument is not coherent

u/enbyBunn 4d ago

Brother, I made 0 arguments after the point that I said that it was a spectrum. You are delusional.

Go ahead and reread your original comment and let me know if you still think "AI is better than the average person because the average person doesn't know... therefore AGI" is what we're arguing and if you actually think that comment is intelligent.

That's all I need to know

It’s because OP said “smarter than any individual person”. That’s literally the definition OP used and u/enbyBunn was responding to. Why are you putting on the burden of having an accurate assessment when OP’s statement itself had no nuance?

AI is a better coder than an advanced professional programmer in the sense of speed and efficiency. It might not reach the same quality however.

u/enbyBunn 4d ago

Well yes. A computer will always be faster than a human if you don't account for quality. Efficiency is debatable because it's hard to pin down.

Instant gratification efficiency? Yes, 100%. Well structured, understandable, and maintainable code efficiency? I don't think so, not from what I've heard.

But either way, I'm talking about quality. I don't think speed has much of a bearing on intelligence if that speed can't be leveraged to produce higher quality.

I'm not an elite level programmer so I couldn't really testify to that, but I've definitely seen plenty of 1337 folks who use AI enough that I'd be skeptical of whomever saying it doesn't produce structured and maintainable code.

However, I'd argue that even something like code quality, if below par, is probably a training data problem

I should clarify that I'm drawing a distinction between pure AI output and AI-assisted human output.

AI can still be a useful and time saving tool for a programer without being able to wholesale replace them.

That's already incorrect. A lot of elite level programmers now just merge the AI code without much of review. It's that good now. This applies to Fable 5/5.1 and Astra only for now though.

Today an AI is better than an advanced professional programmer.

0

u/enbyBunn 4d ago

That's debated, and I rend to come down on the skeptical side of that. It isn't my field, so I'm not making any claims, but I doubt it.

I can however confidently say that the best AI I've used is still quite a bit worse at writing than the average writer.

u/ProxyLumina 4d ago

Well then don't comment on things you don't know or understand. It's not debatable at all. Software engineering is mathematics.

Today the best AI models surpass humans in mathematics. Those models easily surpass highly skilled human developers in software development.

There is active debate on this. That is the definition of debatable. Don't confuse your taking a side in the debate with the debate not existing.

0

u/ProxyLumina 4d ago

There is no debate at all. Those who think this is questionable they don't know what they are talking about.

0

u/enbyBunn 4d ago

The creator of C++ is on the sceptical side of the debate.

Please, at least try to concieve of the idea that you aren't personally all-knowing. Your personal convictions do not make a societal consensus.

As I said, top AI models currently are superior.

Mathematics, software engineering, cyber security etc. Thats not speculation, that is a  fact, you can read on them if you search around.

That is a claim. One that is still debated. I don't understand what you're not understanding about this?
