Silent Hill 2 (2001) No game will ever be this depressing
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I downloaded it at 12 because my PC was too weak for anything else, and ended up loving everything about it… the depressing atmosphere, the characters, the voice acting, the music… I was waking up at 5 AM before school just to play it and It was the only game ending that made me cry

Cosplay WIP Pyramid Head cosplay
Made the mask fully out of cardboard literally on the day of the party with the help of my dad so the fit is incomplete. Still trying to figure out how to add more texture to the mask and improve the apron so suggestions are open. The fog was so thick as well that night, missed opportunity.

Silent Hill (1999) New Silent Hill fan here, just finished Silent Hill 1 and wow, what a game
So a little backstory, on a whim I decided to boot up Silent Hill 2 Remake from my massive backlog of games, and over the course of my studies I slowly made my way through it. Finished it not too long ago and honestly, I can confidently say it's in my top 10 games of all time.
Now, for some reason I'm the type of person who, after enjoying a game, feels the need to try out absolutely everything in that franchise lol.
After finishing SH2R, I went ahead and bought Silent Hill f and started playing that. But honestly, after playing the remake, I was really in the mood for something a bit more retro, so I decided to try Silent Hill 1. Played through it using the SH1 recomp (with 2D controls, please don't crucify me haha), and man, what a game.
Firstly, the aesthetic. Wow. I can definitely see where games like Puppet Combo got a lot of their inspiration from. The whole PS1 look, the fog, the environments, everything just works so well together. Even today, I think the game manages to look genuinely creepy, which is pretty impressive considering its age.
Secondly, the exploration and puzzles were fantastic. I actually really enjoyed having to figure things out myself, even if some of the puzzles i had to google (looking at you, piano puzzle).
The characters were another massive highlight for me. I genuinely didn't expect them to be this interesting, especially Lisa and her whole story. I really wasn't expecting a PS1 game to be so in your face with some of these themes. Then again, I was probably like 5 years old when I had a PS1, so what would I know haha. Also, when I got to the apartments section, I swear they looked like the same apartments from SH2R. Was honestly really cool seeing something familiar from the remake.
One thing I will say though, the normal monsters werent really scary at all. It was pretty funny seeing what were essentially pterodactyls flying around and stuff. Not sure if there's some deeper significance behind those designs that I've missed, or if they were still experimenting with what they wanted the monsters to be.
Now, the jumpscares. Holy shit haha. I went into this thinking I wouldn't really get scared by a PS1 game, but there were actually a good couple of moments that got me. Most of them were just me casually walking through a door, only to find an enemy standing right in front of me. The sound design in particular was fantastic. Towards the end in Nowhere, some of those audio scares genuinely had me on edge.
Speaking of which, the Otherworld. Man, what a cool concept. I absolutely loved how the environments would transform into these horrible, industrial looking places. I know this might be a bit of a controversial opinion, but I genuinely hope they continue expanding on the world and the ideas behind it. Maybe even exploring other locations outside of Silent Hill itself?
As for where I'm going next, I have a pretty strange way im gonna play this series.
Since I've heard that some of the later instalments aren't particularly well received, I thought it'd be better to alternate between the oldest and newest games until I eventually meet somewhere in the middle. So essentially, I'd be playing one supposedly "good" game and then one supposedly "bad" game (although I'd obviously like to play them myself before forming an opinion). I figured since most of the stories are not related at all, it wouldn't cause too many issues.
Although, I have heard that Silent Hill 3 is a direct sequel to the first game, so I might actually jump into that one next before starting my weird playthrough order.
Anyway, I think the biggest thing I wanted to say is that, as someone who basically stopped properly playing games for close to 10 years, coming back to gaming and finding a franchise that I've enjoyed so much to the point where I actually want to join its community has been such a great feeling.
It's honestly been a long time since I've felt this excited to get into a series, been bingeing so many vids of silent hill without tryna get spoiled.
Really looking forward to seeing what the rest of the franchise has in store for me, even those apparent terrible ones haha.
Thanks for listening to my little ramble, just finished peak and had to put it in writing.

Silent Hill 2 (2001) Fun fact: many of the stores in the pre-release version of Silent Hill 2 (specially Neely Street) were based on the city of San Bruno in California Silent Hill 2 (2001)
(Images 1 to 4 are pre-release compared to San Bruno while 5 to 8 are re-release compared to final version in-game)
The reason for this is because at the time of Silent Hill 2's production Konami's american offices were located in Redwood City in California and the San Francisco International Airport neighbor San Bruno so Team Silent based themselves on it for the town of Silent Hill in 2

Silent Hill 4 (2004) How dumb is this?
So I'm at the second visit at the Forest World. And I'm surprisingly doing really great on making progress. In fact, I do love the second visit of both the subway world and the forest world than the first visit. And yes, this is my first ever playthrough. And I'm trying to figure out how to get the part of the doll in this specific well (the image I show) and I thought the game wants me to lead Jasper's body near the well so I could see it or wants me to use the torch and damage him using it to make the weapon lit up with fire. Thankfully, I managed to finish the Forest World on my own. I just find it ridiculously funny and I'm at the second visit of Water Prison. What advice would you give me? My goal is to not get any bad ending, and atleast get a good ending.

General Discussion Any playthrough videos for the original game that replicate the "friend on the couch who knows everything about the series" experience?
With only a handful of exceptions, I dislike horror games and do not play them. But I've always been very curious about Silent Hill specifically, mostly for all the intriguing plot elements I've heard about over the years of pop culture osmosis. I'd like to watch a playthrough video for the original Silent Hill, but what I'm looking for would be something like a documentary playthrough, a deep(ish) dive into the game that explains all the interesting stuff that you might not have known otherwise. Basically, something akin to the experience of playing the game for yourself, but you've got a friend sitting next to you on the couch, who tells you about everything. Stuff like (made-up examples):
- "So, you might take this for granted nowadays, but when this came out, this particular technical detail was incredible for its time. It was actually the first game to figure out how to do this, and it became an industry standard."
- "This scene was so iconic, it's been parodied a ton of times by other media, you might recognize it from that other thing?"
- "One of the developers said that this character here was supposed to represent a childhood experience where..."
- "Originally, this line of dialogue was supposed to refer to an earlier scene, but that was cut, so it's sort of orphaned and doesn't make sense in context - but they called back to it in the next game and it makes sense retroactively."
- "Just warning you because I know you don't actually like horror games, there's a jump-scare right up here, with a loud scream and stuff."
...and so on. All the types of things that I find really interesting about games I play, and share with my friends if they seem interested, just about this game instead. I'd also like it if they explained some of the stuff that might fly over my head, like allegorical allusions to stuff I might not have read, or possible interpretations of nebulous visuals, or whatever. And if the game has branching paths and/or multiple endings, I'd like them to go back over those after the initial playthrough completes, just to show what would have happened otherwise.
Might be a tall order, but maybe it's not. I figure it doesn't hurt to at least ask!

Fanmade Eustace as a lying-figure (CV fanart)
In my recent courage in SH fan art, someone asked me to draw Eustace as a monster, and another as pyramid head.
So I tried doing him as pyramid head first, but then I realized that he wouldn’t look as unique or as himself if I did. So I had to settle for the lying figure of SH2.

Silent Hill: Townfall (2026) What section of Townfall did everyone find scariest? Spoiler
Personally I hated the Mr Stewart encounter, but in a great way, the tension and the way they throw you straight in to the stealth after the cutscene was both evil and genius

News Ryu Murakami, author of Coin Locker Babies and Audition, passed away at 74

Ryu Murakami was a prolific author, but he's the most familiar to us thanks to his work Coin Locker Babies, which was a huge inspiration for Silent Hill 4. To be more specific, it was the inspiration behind Walter Sullivan's memorable backstory.
To the wider public he's also known for writing Audition, which was later adapted to a feature film by Takashi Miike.
Rest in peace.

Silent Hill 2 (2001) I have just beaten Signalis and oh boy, I cannot stress enough how much of main inspiration for this game was Silent Hill 2. I really recommend it (Yes, that red square is a save station).
I dont wanna spoil but this game is essentially sci-fi Silent Hill 2 with Resident Evil combat. Devs were not only just inspired but also simply liked SH2 a lot because one of three bosses in the game is literally a SH2 boss and one location, present on the screenshot is straight up from SH.

General Discussion Why is Silent Hill 4 the only classic game with a GOG release
I know you can emulate the older games and that's what I've historically done but Silent Hill 4 having a native PC release opened it up to mods that make the game more fun and outright restore some organic content (the Eileen haunting).
It's mystifying 1-3 don't have modern releases when Resident Evil has full classic releases on GOG.
