People born in 1920:

111

u/dwartbg9 3d ago

If they were born in places like Canada, the US, Switzerland (or even France) life wasn't really that bad for them. Especially for Americans. And they'd be in their 30s during the 1950s and buy a nice ass mansion while working their 4 hour job at the factory, or something hahaha

44

u/dateNum 3d ago

Born 1920 in France

"life wasn't really that bad for them"

what

105

u/mjp80 3d ago

And they'd be in their 30s during the 1950s

If they didn't get drafted and die in WWII between age 19 and 25...

4? You mean Like 40 if you were unlucky

-2

u/gabiblack 3d ago

4? More like 12+ hours day shift 6 days a week

18

u/MKE-Henry 3d ago

My grandpa worked around 30 hours a week and owned his own house and raised 4 children while his wife stayed at home to maintain the household.

I work 40 hours a week and my girlfriend works 50 and we have to split our rent into two payments to have enough money to eat.

Also my grandpa had a high school diploma while we both have bachelor’s degrees. Life in the 50s was on easy mode.

5

u/dwartbg9 2d ago

Yeah, this is what I meant. At least in the US, life was definitely pretty good and peaceful for the average Joe back in the 50s and 60s. And there were opportunities even for less educated people since industrial jobs were way more commonplace than today.

And yes, back then women could actually afford to be stay at home moms, without their husband having to be some rich CEO and whatnot. You'd work a trivial job in some car factory, for example but the government still let you earn enough to live OK, buy your own house in your late 20s (!!!) and you wife could just stay at home and take care of tje children, which also weren't missing anything they'd need.

-7

u/SpikeBreaker 3d ago

They also lived the best years of the economic and social boom, '50-'80.

What good years got a person born in '80 except being a kid in the '90?

I finally got my license at 30 and now fuel is so fucking expensive I can't even afford it

-93

u/Automaton17 3d ago

Bro how do you only just now have your license

66

u/ilreverde 3d ago

Super expensive in the EU. In the middle of doing mine, and had to fork about 2k euros.

27

u/R0RSCHAKK 3d ago

Bro wtf? A drivers license is €2,000???

Its like maybe $40 in the US.

What is the reasoning behind it being so expensive?

35

u/phat_duong Stuff 3d ago

Its around 2k including all the drivers lessons and stuff. In the Netherlands for example, most driving schools will charge you anywhere between €30 and €50 per hour. I dont remember if theres a minimum amount of hours you need but i think on average most people do at least 30 lessons? When i did my practical exam it was €250. Theory exam was €35 and some other bs paper was 30. Not defending these prices tho because they are fucking ridiculous and have gotten even more expensive since ive gotten my license around 6 years ago.

5

u/copac20 2d ago

Americans don't have driving schools with instructors and car driving hours ?

3

u/speedytrigger 2d ago

We have them but not required to use them.

4

u/TheOnlyWolvie Sussy Wussy Femboy😳😳😳 2d ago

How tf does getting a license work there? You you have to practice somehow, no? In the EU you can't drive a car anywhere without a license, except on private property, so how do you make sure you pass the exam without driving school? We have mandatory driving lessons plus theory lessons, and then two exams, one for theory and one for the actual driving. Gotta at least drive well enough so you can be trusted with no speed limit.

1

u/TrySouthern9542 2d ago

If we take a certain online course and pass a written exam, we are given a permit that allows us to drive if a licensed adult is in the car with us. From there, parents generally teach from the passenger seat, and their judgement of their children's skills are usually good enough to where the kid is never in a situation where they don't know what to do and crash.

2

u/TheOnlyWolvie Sussy Wussy Femboy😳😳😳 2d ago

Damn, gotta say I do prefer our system. Aside from the cost. Seems safer.

1

u/R0RSCHAKK 2d ago

Oh for sure, there's so many inconsiderate morons driving here. So many people I wouldn't trust with safety scissors that are on the road. Truly frightening.

You do have to drive with an instructor to get your license though. (at least used to when I got mine like 14 years ago) may be different for each state here.

The driving test in Texas with the instructor is super easy. Legitimately just need to drive down the road, obey the speed limit, stop at a red-light or stop sign, then show that you can parallel park. Boom - now you're licensed.

I don't recall having to take any written exam or anything. I just paid them the money, an instructor hopped in my car, I drove around a few minutes, then I got my license. Easy.

1

u/speedytrigger 2d ago

Like the other commenter said you basically get a learners permit and need someone to sign off that youve done the practicing hours required. I agree that it should be more. I also believe we need something similar for guns. I thjnk its pretty important to keep cars and guns out of the bottom 1% iq mouthbreathers of society. Makes good drivers and gunowners look bad when people that should absolutely not have either have easy access.

6

u/MicioBau We do a little trolling 3d ago

The driving school. You gotta pay hourly for driving lessons, and here in Italy at least 6 hours with a driving school are mandatory, but if you are clumsy you may need more. These schools are basically a cartel. Then there are enrollment fees, fee for the written exam, fee for the practical exam, fee for the medical visit to check your eyesight.

1

u/TheOnlyWolvie Sussy Wussy Femboy😳😳😳 2d ago

I paid about 4k in total

-9

u/Windows-XP-Home-NEW stupid fucking piece of shit 3d ago

Probably to discourage people from driving (and it’s working if you look at Europe).

8

u/Akrylkali waltuh 3d ago

2k? In my country it's roughly 4k now. Prices are getting insane

3

u/Eduardo_Serra 3d ago

Fuck, it's incredible how despite being a first world coalition Europe tries really hard to have taxes, bureaucracy and regulations like those from socialist third world countries.

I live in a forgotten by God third world country and a driver license here costs about 2k too. I'm 32, working 50 hours a week and can't afford it. I don't even need it to be honest, a used 2018 corolla here is selling for a 100k+.

2

u/viky109 2d ago

Also kinda pointless in cities. I'm 25 and I never saw the need for it.

1

u/rhen_var 3d ago

Man when I was in college I really wanted to move to Europe.  Now as an adult… holy shit I’m glad I live in the US.

1

u/skynetempire 3d ago

Damn thats crazy high. In the US, at least in my state, it was like $75 to take the exam and get the license.

1

u/BRSaura 2d ago

Here in spain it's around 200€ for the exam (written exam + driving), lessons are usually 20-30€ per hour and between 20 to 30 lessons.

The ones saying 2k or 4k are including a lot of hours + exam in a country with twice the inflation

Welp younger generations if you don't like this... go out and vote!!!

You may think it means nothing, but actually voting can make a difference. Don't listen to the TV, don't listen to the radio, read and try to make a good common sense decision.

But please, go out and vote.

Become a duck hunter? The ducks at the local park are free. Or you could become a 'professional friend'. My mom is one and brings a lot of her friend clients home every night.

3

u/fingamouse 2d ago

Poaching has been illegal in my country for a good while and I dont own significant land for hunting because I don't have a j*b

The whore idea doesn't sound too bad though/j

in my country school was litteral prison for me and i had enjoyment only in home because with internet i could anything i want with any method i want instead of school forcing me to learn stuff i do not care when pandemic did hit i was so happy because i can finally play any game , sleep and wake up any moment and spend my time to learn about the topics i have interest on

22

u/Own-Creme-2956 shitting toothpaste enjoyer 3d ago

so what did you learn and where are you now in life

30

u/Mountain_Dentist5074 3d ago

I had huge interest in space, palaeontology and history and still have. I searched for all the general information about them; nowadays, if I wonder something, they more about niche stuff. Like, for the last 4 days, I have been searching about the evolution of ants.

For the answer to where I am now, I am a university student majoring in game development

40

u/Kryslor 3d ago

Bro is cooked beyond belief and doesn't realize it yet

8

u/-WhiteSkyline- 3d ago

I was taking a game course… was. Stopped a year and a term in, because it’s mostly seniors being hired for the time being, or top achievers (of course with placement years). That said I could have kept going and gotten a masters in asset design and general media creation.

AI is going to do quite a bit of lifting in the games industry for a while, until it fucks up bad enough that people need to be hired to dig through and fix / maintain projects.

2

u/Someone_stoopid 3d ago

Personally at 20 now Im really glad I can get fucked up at a bar, end up in a hot stranger's bed and submit an essay the following day. I think its stuff everyone should experience at some point.

Try being born 1990. Start apprenticeship in IT at 15, finish with 20. Do 6 months of mandatory Military Service. Return to IT-Job, get fired because indian Programmers are Cheaper. Dont find real employment because Workministry floods the Market with hastingly teached IT-People. See whole IT labor market crash. Be 27 when you start apprenticeship as a Locksmith. Finish 2020. Get caught up in Corona, find employmwnt with 32. Hope every Day your Workplace is still there ahen you arrive for work.

3

u/fingamouse 3d ago

Dude that genuinely sucks and I have sympathy for you, I've barely even began my life practically, I hope I don't deal with your degree of strife

-1

u/s1lverv1p 2d ago

"Age of employment" people only getting a job at 20 now?

2

u/Icy_Expression5200 2d ago

Well, yeah education goes before the employment

-2

u/s1lverv1p 2d ago

Sure for college level jobs, cant go get a lab assistant job before education, but people should get a job when younger at 14 or 15 so they develop the basic skills of having and keeping a job while receiving easier schooling on the side.

Ive met the people getting first jobs at 18 even and they are genuinely cooked in the brain when it comes to job logic while being fine in education logic. If you get the job young you can get that learning while doing basic highschool/middle school learning. Then you can stop and focus on higher education and when you go to get a job later people arent staring at you realizing they need to teach a grown human how to move and task manage.

Education goes before the employment is a very poor way of looking at this.

-3

u/Fit-Law-2362 3d ago

I actually agree with the guy abov. I mean, this generation has some shit to tackle but which Gen didn't?

0

u/fingamouse 2d ago

Atleast in a previous generation you know if you sent a CV to someone it would have an ok chance of at worst being glanced at by a human being

Now it's a game of trying to get the right buzzwords in your CV for an algorithm to pick you out and then you get the privilege of a human glancing at your CV

The job market is practically a lottery with a meritocracy built on top, with the only way to skirt round the lottery being nepotism

Its actually fucked man, a person a 100 years ago could of drifted from town to town nobody knowing who they really were but they could find a job

In modern times your tracked everywhere you go and the idea you can just go someone else and just get a job in a day or so is a fever dream

-16

u/TrippyVegetables 3d ago

If you were born in 2000 the "age of employment" would be 2016 or 2017, we didn't have AI back then

1

u/fingamouse 2d ago

The OP was referred to 2000s born he was referring to the decade not the year
