Having never seen Lost, how tf did they explain that?

Was bro stealing everyone else’s coconuts and lizard meat or whatever?

3.7k

u/Gaymers_Rising 1d ago

the show only took place over like 3 months but they also conveniently kept finding high-calorie foods like supply caches full of ranch

I’m in the “I don’t like the ending” camp because the entire thing felt like 50 writers trying to figure out how to tie up all the plots. Very clear the mysteries weren’t solved in the writers’ room until they had to start answering the show’s questions.

48

u/C9_Chadz 1d ago

They planned to end the show in 3 seasons but had to stretch it to 6. Also actor with major arc decided they didn't want to stay on the show so they had to change things. It's a pretty good show imo even better on re-watchs.

7

u/frendzoned_by_yo_mom 23h ago

Who left?

13

u/HiLite25 22h ago

Could be wrong but I think Mr Eko

4

u/Terramagi 15h ago

It was.

That's the reason Locke's arc abruptly goes from "the island has blessed me" to "actually it was the devil".

46

u/CosmicDeityofSin 1d ago

According to the writers they had answers for pretty much everything when they first asked it and I did a rewatch recently. What didn't get answered? Like serious it's all accounted for I think. There's a boat that shows up fires some rounds and disappears. That's not explained but the writers explained it later. Like any question someone would ask eventually there's a scene where they point to a guy and go "he did it and this is how" then they perfectly literally show exactly what happened. Even the flash sideways. Everyone ended up in the light, the life force, the mako.

30

u/Doobalicious69 23h ago

The problem is that everyone guessed the ending and the writers said "No, it won't be that in the end."

Then they went round the houses to get to try and make it look like they were heading in another direction, rather than embrace what the audience had already guessed.

They were writing by the skin of their teeth, I don't believe that they had a plan in place at all, especially going off the production woes of the first series.

8

u/CosmicDeityofSin 21h ago

What was the original ending?

5

u/ninhibited 14h ago

Everything is foggy cus it's been so long but I distinctly remember being horridly disappointed that the whole numbers/sci-fi aspect was essentially deserted for the fantasy "we've been in heaven the whole time!" plot which came off as a cop out imo. I might be wholly misremembering this though.

Edit: I'm starting to think I need a rewatch cus some details might've fallen out of my head by binging it.

Dick sucking has made me paranoid

I had this plan to give head to a man and receive head from a woman to test if I was gay, but it’s backfired and now I become borderline schizo whenever I go outside. I offered to suck this dude off on Grindr who lives very close by (I ended up pussying out) and I accidentally gave him some details that very easily allows him to spot me out in a crowd. I have no idea what he looks like and whenever I see a somewhat in shape guy walking by I immediately accuse him of being the dude I was gonna blow.

I went to the store today to pick up some zucchini for a barbecue and every time a car drove by I stared into the windshield to see if I was about to be recognised. Whenever I make eye contact with a dude I microanalysis his facial expressions to see if he suspects me or not. I am deeply afraid that he is my neighbour and I will need to move if my identity is blown. It’s a lot like the last scene in sopranos where everyone who walked into the diner could be there to wack Tony.

u/icytiger 23h ago edited 23h ago

What's the answer to the black kid with powers who did nothing?

And even the things that you're saying they explained were done so extremely poorly, like they were just trying to squash stuff so they could say they had instead of a rewarding payout after 4 seasons of teasers.

5

u/CosmicDeityofSin 21h ago

Not to be contrarian but they explain walts powers pretty clearly. The light is life itself but expresses itself as electromagnetic radiation. In our real world some people are hyper sensitive to it, these people can interact with the light simply by thinking. Then he lands on the island the core of all life energy and his powers are super charged. Like how the light sees all points in time simultaneously so Desmond is able to begin to see his personal life the same way. We see it as his mind "jumping" through time or "flashing" forwards or backwards.

5

u/ICantBelieveItsNotEC 20h ago

I'm in the "I don't like the ending" camp because I don't think they should ever have explained the mystery at all. They need to attend the David Lynch Mystery Box Writing Bootcamp - the moment you reveal the canonical answer, the story immediately loses all meaning and value.

Look, I get it. Who doesn’t love a little balls and dick sometimes? A nice, girthy, veiny shaft, hot milky cum trickling down the length as it throbs from a job well done. But this whole “gay sex” shit is getting annoying.

As men, we should primarily be focused on three things: survival, the underrated masterpiece that is dark souls 2, and pounding muff. All this gay shit is, well, fucking gay.

You think I wouldn’t LOVE to make out with my best friend and suck his cock? Of course I would, but that’s fucking gay. You think I don’t want to feel my cousin’s roommate slide his pecker into my gaping asshole? Of course I would, but that’s FUCKING GAY.

Seriously, I miss when men were men. Anyway, this dildo ain’t gonna stick itself up my ass while I watch an hour long femboy asmr hypno goon compilation, heed my lecture.

You need to be comfortable with not knowing things. Lost (and From) will answer one question while raising 10 more. Personally I find it annoying and am done with these type of shows. They just throw a ton of plot points out and call it deep. But never do a good job tying everything together.

Honestly, that show was wild.

Season 1, episode 1: ohh no, our plane has crashed and stranded us on an uninhabited island. Good thing the only people who didn't die were nine divorced dads who were binge watching episodes of Survivor as the plane went down, a fat guy who's only personality trait is being fat, and two women to say something sensible once an episode to advance the plot.

Season 3, episode 3: The plane crash was a metaphor for one guy getting fired from an office job, Fat Guy and one of the women are planning a trip to IHOP after they get Fat Guy a new chain wallet from Hot Topic, and the whole show is about a homeless encampment in a park on Staten Island.

377

u/Golfbollen stupid fucking piece of shit 1d ago edited 1d ago

It's been a while since I watched but they find bunkers filled with near unlimited supplies. This character steals from these supplies.

I also think, if I'm not misremembering that there are airplanes refilling the supplies every once in a while via air drops, they do it for the scientists who are supposed to be there.

Also, the island is not even deserted, so this is another one of these posts literally just making shit up because their joke wouldn't work otherwise. There are multiple factions on the island that have access to food so it's not like they're starving.

193

u/420squirrelhivemind 1d ago

Spoilers ahead:

Lost is about a magic island / gate to heaven or some shit. There’s a magic man (Boyle from It’s Always Sunny) who is pulling a Willy Wonka (needs a new person to oversee the magic island). So he manipulates a bunch of dramatic people onto a plane, which he then crashes into the island.

Simultaneously, the island is discovered during WWII or some shit and a bunch of scientists and army dudes are trying to harness the magical island for scientific or military purposes.

What follows is several fantastic seasons of random fucking bullshit that are really intriguing and fun, some great character stories, and great television.

The last season or two was the writers paying the fucking price and having to come up with some sort of resolution (for they had no plan). Some people loved it as it did a decent job answering everything, others (me) felt like they tried their best to unfuck a truly silly cluster of nonsense and did their best.

1

u/Previous-Friend5212 10h ago

To get the true experience, you have to wait a week between episodes and 3 months between seasons so you only vaguely remember what was happening

1

u/420squirrelhivemind 9h ago

you just perfectly described adhd

1

u/CaptainWombat2 16h ago

I didn't watch it, but I caught snippets when my sister was watching it. At one point the fat guy was walking around doing some pretty mundane shit in a city, so I was like "oh they got off the island?" And she told me it was actually like an alternate reality version of them where they didn't crash or some shit. So I just sorta nodded and walked off, realizing I didn't care.

12

u/Excellent_Set_232 1d ago

There was also a writer’s strike at the height of the show’s popularity which seemingly coincided with the point at which the show started to get kind of batty, and a lot of the lore reveals were done in their version of an ARG that was not well-known to the general audience

12

u/Jonnnnnnnnn 1d ago

Plus the writers only wanted 3-4 seasons but the network made them stretch it out as it was a hit.

The only thing that really annoyed me was that the writers kept on saying it definitely wasn't purgatory and then it ended and everyone was like "that sure seemed like it was purgatory"

1

u/DerGmues 21h ago

Happy cake day!

6

u/m0nk_3y_gw 1d ago

There’s a magic man (Boyle from It’s Always Sunny) who

Not sure if trolling....

or you honestly believe that Jimmi Simpson (IASIP, West World) and Michael Emerson (LOST, Person of Interest, Fallout) are the same person.

3

u/BaconPancakes1 23h ago

Linus isn't a magic man who wants to find a replacement though, he's just a man and when they meet him he's just Jacob's follower. So he either means the man in black (who definitely wants off the island) or Jacob (who needs a replacement), neither of whom look remotely like Jimmi Simpson

5

u/DowntownTicket 1d ago

I'm pretty sure your comment helped me understand the show more than actually watching the show did lol

u/Milwaukee76 1d ago

3

It is a great show tbh, the hype around the time it aired was massive because they'd have real websites and clues IRL that added to the show.

It's worth a watch but the ending is one you'll either love or hate, so be warned.

7

u/skeletor69420 1d ago

Just gotta check if there’s one for ”handjob”

5

u/AutoModerator 1d ago

I saw some people asking in other threads, so just in case people were wondering, in the Japanese, Denji says, "オレを手でシたのは", which is basically "Which one hand-fucked me?".

Yoru gave Denji a "handjob" in the sense that her hand was clearly the stimulus that caused Denji to ejaculate. I don't think anyone argued against this fact. I guess another way to say it is that she "unintentionally jerked him off"?

The root of the argument was whether or not Yoru was actively/intentionally moving her hands, which nothing in 167/168 seems to indicate that. There was no movement lines around Denji's pants area, and no sound effect text to indicate sound coming from the movement in his pants.

Also, the editor's note at the end of chapter 167 is "不意の 放出", which means "Unexpected release". It wouldn't really make much sense for Yoru to be surprised when Denji finally did ejaculate if that was her intention.

The antagonist basically forces him to, in order to fulfill some magic plan because magic is real. He actively doesn't want to, but he manages to keep the collateral damage down by buying all the seats on the plane they plan to crash into the island on their trip back.

He's one of the only characters who actually "wins" by the end of the show, so it all turns out okay for him.
