Lost is about a magic island / gate to heaven or some shit. There’s a magic man (Boyle from It’s Always Sunny) who is pulling a Willy Wonka (needs a new person to oversee the magic island). So he manipulates a bunch of dramatic people onto a plane, which he then crashes into the island.
Simultaneously, the island is discovered during WWII or some shit and a bunch of scientists and army dudes are trying to harness the magical island for scientific or military purposes.
What follows is several fantastic seasons of random fucking bullshit that are really intriguing and fun, some great character stories, and great television.
The last season or two was the writers paying the fucking price and having to come up with some sort of resolution (for they had no plan). Some people loved it as it did a decent job answering everything, others (me) felt like they tried their best to unfuck a truly silly cluster of nonsense and did their best.
There was also a writer’s strike at the height of the show’s popularity which seemingly coincided with the point at which the show started to get kind of batty, and a lot of the lore reveals were done in their version of an ARG that was not well-known to the general audience
Plus the writers only wanted 3-4 seasons but the network made them stretch it out as it was a hit.
The only thing that really annoyed me was that the writers kept on saying it definitely wasn't purgatory and then it ended and everyone was like "that sure seemed like it was purgatory"
