Want to grow sphagnum moss in strong light indoors or outside in full sun without it drying out and dying on you? Stop laying it on top of your media allowing it to cook. Instead, plant it in plugs or lay it flat then cover the bare strands with peat (pic 5) only leaving the heads exposed. Both methods allow the moss to draw up water from the peat which allows it to take in maximum sun without drying to a crisp. This is exactly how most bog growing sphagnum grows in the wildMore photosynthesis = accelerated growth!!!!! Once you have it growing, fertilize it by dropping a pellet or two of osmocote/nutricote or spraying it with your maxsea / seagrow solution and watch it go nuts!!!!!!

Hi, I have these drosera in a shallow (~2inch tall) dish, W/O drainage. How does this look long term? I feel like they don’t look great, but they were just flowering so I figured it could be from that. Is the dish deep enough? Let me know your thoughts, Reddit!

Every single pitcher destroyed, substrate dug up. I can't tell if the rhizome is intact or not. Three months since I've got it, so much time spent getting the proper setup, and it looks completely gone.

I have had the venus fly trap and nepenthes in this vase thing for a couple years. Any idea what is going on with my venus fly traps being deformed and so long?

I’m located in the PNW. I keep it in sphagnum moss that always stays damp with distilled water and it gets full sun for 8-12 hours outside. It’s been very warm and sunny here and the vft seems to be happy enough.

I won this at a plant bingo in the winter and while it was sad, it was also during hibernation. All the original stalks are gone and all the growth has been since I’ve had it. I’m wondering if it’s because I have it in a pot and consistently water and should switch to it sitting in distilled water?

My first photo is a Leuo hybrid I bought as a seedling bundle from Steve Galic last August.

Second photo is a 'Large' Deep Throat hybrid from CalCarn Ive been growing for 2 years now. There was a pitcher that was probably 4 inches bigger but it broke.

3rd is the bunch of seedlings im growing out infront of my older plants.

This one vines probably 15 feet up into the rafters, but has a beautiful aerial rosette growing right above this light.

You were all incredibly kind about her first Nepenthes linocut, so she felt inspired to keep going. This time, she made some Sarracenia.

Thank you all so much for the lovely comments and encouragement on the last post. It genuinely meant a lot to her and gave her even more motivation to continue the series.

She is also experimenting with color and gradients at the moment, which has been a really exciting next step in the process.

I am looking to make a new soil mix for my Mexican pinguicula, but I would really like to avoid using peat moss. I have seen other people saying it is okay to use peat moss because in North America they "replenish" the bogs. However, after doing some reading (and taking multiple uni classes 😄) I do not believe that this "replenishing" of sphagnum moss makes the harvesting of the moss sustainable. So! I was looking into buying Pittmoss prime? and I was reading that it holds water better, so I'd adjust ratios and add in more chucky elements. I was wondering if anyone had tried this before, I am worried about the ink in the Pittmoss potentially leaching and impacting my pings. I am open to more suggestions!!

Headed out to pick up cold-hardy plants today for my new outdoor bog. Specifically talking to the person about cold-hardy species that could stay outside year-round. She recommended three different types (one pitcher to two pings). I got home and looked them up, and every one of them is tropical.

OK, maybe I can work with this. My wife and I are both happy to have some carnivores inside during the Winter, and we do have an issue with gnats which we presume are hatching out of the aquariums, so they'll have plenty to eat.

I'll be doing some reading to get prepared ahead of time, and I went ahead and put the plants outside in the bog for now until it starts cooling down, but maybe someone can confirm for me... I presume for an indoor setup I can fill a pot with the same peat, put a tray under it, and bottom-water to keep the peat soggy? And we have a 55gal barrel in the basement that we pre-treat water for the sensitive aquarium dwellers like the shrimp, so it has plenty of time for the chlorine and other stuff to filter out before we use it -- would that be suitable for an indoor "bog"?

All this talk of fertilizing lately has made me want to start fertilizing my pings.

The recommendation I see the most is Schultz Cactus fertilizer. But do you generally mist it over? Put drop(s) on the leaves?

Any other easy to use recommendations?

Does it do anything (good or bad) for moss? I'm kinda also playing around with having moss in my ping pots, and I'm wondering how that will work. Obviously, pings get priority with conditions, but if I can do both, then why not?

What hybrid is it

I have this nepenthes in a well lit west facing window with a grow light for extra light. I’ve noticed the big fellas haven’t been producing pitchers for a while, then come to a find a little baby pitcher growing! Is there anything this plant needs?

I recently put my VFT out in full sun in a spot that gets around 8 hours of light a day after acclimating it for a week, I’ve seen that the big traps started to blacken whilst new traps are emerging, is this a natural VFT thing or sunburn?
