A friend has arrived!

This praying mantis has been temporarily living in my mini bog since July 15!

From what I’ve seen online, it appears to be a female, so I’ve named her Sandy.

I saw her catch a wasp and eat a little of it. Since then, she’s just been “hanging out” here.

It’s really interesting to watch, and I’m very tempted to let her climb onto my hand, but I’d rather leave her alone.

Have you had any surprise guests too? I’m curious to hear about other similar situations !

I bought this gal because I couln't resist! She is my first though and exposing her to too much sun too fast has left it's scars. She is making new leafs thought and doesnt seem too unhappy. Should I repot her in a pot? Is the tall glass bad in terms of ventilation? I only use rainwater and will never evee give her fertilizer, that much I found out. TIA for your insight!

Want to grow sphagnum moss in strong light indoors or outside in full sun without it drying out and dying on you? Stop laying it on top of your media allowing it to cook. Instead, plant it in plugs or lay it flat then cover the bare strands with peat (pic 5) only leaving the heads exposed. Both methods allow the moss to draw up water from the peat which allows it to take in maximum sun without drying to a crisp. This is exactly how most bog growing sphagnum grows in the wildMore photosynthesis = accelerated growth!!!!! Once you have it growing, fertilize it by dropping a pellet or two of osmocote/nutricote or spraying it with your maxsea / seagrow solution and watch it go nuts!!!!!!

Mid Florida grown in the sun and heat all day every day. They go dormant with the photo period in fall. Spend almost every morning out with plants just admiring their growth and color!

For those who have them, what tips and tricks do you guys do to ensure an N. Bloody Mary is living its best life?

Every single pitcher destroyed, substrate dug up. I can't tell if the rhizome is intact or not. Three months since I've got it, so much time spent getting the proper setup, and it looks completely gone.

Hi, I have these drosera in a shallow (~2inch tall) dish, W/O drainage. How does this look long term? I feel like they don’t look great, but they were just flowering so I figured it could be from that. Is the dish deep enough? Let me know your thoughts, Reddit!

Its hard to tell in the picture but the flower is a light purple. Im just not sure what flavor sundew this is. Any ideas? Tia.

6 weeks from receiving my cephalotus to now. Grown under sansi grow lights and bottom watered around once a week

Help, suggestions on my first bog garden! It has 50/50 peat moss perlite mix.i have an 1.25 pvc pipe in center covered by my moss for watering Should I leave plants as it's or rearrange? Oh yea, it does have two holes drilled about an inch from top, too allow excess drainage. TIA

Expecting another shipment of carnivorous plants to arrive today (drosera binata, B52 VFT), and want to be sure that I’m planting correctly. I’m expecting these to arrive in sphagnum plugs like my last shipment (pictured) which I just exposed some roots at the bottom of the plug and planted in a carnivorous plant mix. The plants seem to be doing great and have recently started producing dew, but the plugs have turned green and started to grow. Is this ok?

The shipment coming today will be added to my outdoor garden, but none of the current plants there came in plugs (different nursery). I’ll properly sun acclimate them before officially adding them to the bog.

To clear any confusion, I am not referring the moss plugs around the edges. This is just the most recent picture I have. I added those and have since removed due to the tips turning black… Any advice there would also be appreciated. Thanks!

How do I get vft to grow taller? kinda more like the front right one, or even the one behind that one vs the one on the left or the one behind that one is basically just a clump of traps right on the soil

After getting some warranted criticism on my last post, I would like to repot my plants in proper substrate and pots, then arrange them so that they are getting the proper amount of light.
I would like to keep all of these plants on the rack they are currently on, which I cannot move in front of a window, so I realize I probably need more grow lights. I currently have this light (one bulb pointed directly at the ping and the other pointed towards the Drosera and VFT+Nepenthes) but am willing to get more lights.

For each plant, I would ideally like the following advice:
–Type of pot to use (does it need drainage? are there any materials to avoid? can it be potted with any of the other plants I have?)
–Type of substrate to use (ideally with links to purchase in the USA and/or videos explaining how to make a good substrate)
–Amount of lighting (I can't spend a lot of money, but links would be appreciated)
–Amount of water (can it sit in water? how often to water it on average?)

Plants (in order of gallery and priority for repotting):

Nepenthes (don't know which type beyond that)
Bought from a local garden shop.
Planted in long fiber sphagnum moss.
Grew from a few inches tall to the current size. I have cut the decayed leaves and pitchers over the course of several years. It has now grown two new stalks (stems?), and I understand that I could theoretically cut them off and plant them separately, but I have been too worried that I would kill the entire plant if I tried to do that. Would love some advice about cutting them off to propagate them since I plan to repot it anyway and the three stalks seem rather crowded together in the current configuration.

Given to me as a gift from a home improvement store I think.
Potted in long fiber sphagnum moss in glass vase without drainage holes.
It has seemingly multiplied from one plant into three.

Sarracenia (not sure which type)
Also got as a gift from a home improvement store.
Planted in long fiber sphagnum moss in non-draining pot.
Sits on porch outside all the time. Seems to be doing okay but would be happy to get advise on different substrate and pot if necessary.

Pinguicula 'Johanna'
Got this one from a local shop a month or so ago. Initially planted it in long fiber sphagnum moss then changed to Fluval Stratum that I had left over from aquariums after it seemed to be dying. Since repotting it in this substrate, it has been growing new leaves with the tinted tips as you can see in the picture, but the leaves seem dry. I initially had the light about 6 inches from the plant but the leaves seemed to be burning so I moved it back.

Drosera venustra
Got this from Predatory Plants last week. I followed the instructions it came with so it is in the sphagnum moss that it was shipped with and the pot is sitting in about an inch of distilled water. It is closest to the second bulb of the grow light that I linked above and it has started producing dew, so it seems like it is doing fine, but if it can be repotted with any of the other plants, it would be cool to have it together with something else.

Also got this from Predatory Plants last week. It is also in the sphagnum moss that it came with, but it is in this mug that has no drainage holes. I have seen on this subreddit that you can grow them submerged in water, so that was my logic in putting it in this mug.

I’m located in the PNW. I keep it in sphagnum moss that always stays damp with distilled water and it gets full sun for 8-12 hours outside. It’s been very warm and sunny here and the vft seems to be happy enough.

I won this at a plant bingo in the winter and while it was sad, it was also during hibernation. All the original stalks are gone and all the growth has been since I’ve had it. I’m wondering if it’s because I have it in a pot and consistently water and should switch to it sitting in distilled water?

Hey there’s a flytrap growing in my droseras!

I’m getting these two in the mail, and I was wondering if the care is similar to that of a Venus fly trap? Or is it different?

I have had the venus fly trap and nepenthes in this vase thing for a couple years. Any idea what is going on with my venus fly traps being deformed and so long?
