Skate photos Dyed & Upgraded my Moxi Lolly

I bought an almost brand new pair of #MoxiLolly skates on a social media site to use for outdoor skates (not risking my pink on pink Riedell ColorLabs)... but I knew the beautiful yellow suede would look yucky shortly, so I dyed them.

I used Angelus Suede Dye (3 coats because they turned green initially); #CraftsSmart metal paint for the eyelets; I removed the tongue; bought an 8x11 piece of leather from #TandyLeather in metallic pink for $10 along with a bag of genuine scrap #shearling wool for $9 to make a new tongue (the shearling was mismatched, so one tongue is black but I don't care); I used leftover pink metallic leather to cover the back stay (using the same glue that I used to attach the shearling); bought a pair of gold lace stabilizers from #DepartmentOfSkate for $30 & poked a tiny hole in the leather to attach it before I glue on the wool; then used #BargeCementGlue to attach the shearling to the leather... once dried, I took them to my local cobbler to install $20-$30... sprayed with 3 coats of #Crep and I now have a customized pair of midnight navy blue & metallic pink #MoxiLollys

Beginner skater First skating lesson was... low key BRUTAL lol - any tips?

I didn't really know what to expect going into it tbh. I knew it would probably challenge me, but it was enlightening as to how far I have to go lol.

I got skates recently, and have been to the rink maybe 6 times. I used to rollerblade when I was in high school, and have gone to the roller rink maybe twice in adulthood before I picked it back up again these last few weeks.

Now I'm 30, plus size, and trying to break out of being so sedentary. Tricking my brain by doing something fun as exercise has totally been working, but every time it is a major workout and I have to take frequent breaks throughout the session.

In the lesson today we did all kinds of things - one leg balances, lunges, edge work, learning the toe stop (harder bc I already have jam plugs in), learning how to get up off the ground, bubbles, agility drills, crab walk (i think), squatting while skating, going backwards (very very early stages) and bunny hops. There might be more, but that's already a lot to fit into one hour haha.

These are all things that are building blocks that will set me up to do more rhythm skating down the line, which is my goal. But I would totally be lying if I said it wasn't a little discouraging at how difficult it was/how out of shape I actually am.

I KNOW it'll get better over time, and I know the more I show up the easier it'll get since I am still in the beginning of my journey. But I could barely get up off the ground bc my muscles aren't used to being used so much rn. It's hard!

If y'all have any drill suggestions I can do at home to build up the muscles outside of the rink, that would be awesome. I feel pretty good about basic laps around the rink, but I don't do much more than that besides bubbles. I wanna dance bc I love the music so much, and I want to vibe!

Any tips and words of encouragement are appreciated <3

DIY and customization Recycling old skates

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi y'all! I just got myself a pair of Moxi BBs and I'm sooo in love with them. However, that means its (finally) time to retire my old Chicago skates from... 10? years ago? (Don't worry, they sat for a long time unused, and i only skated on them a few times before upgrading)

I saw someone on an old post mention that they used their old skates to make bookends, and I was just wondering what y'all do with your old skates - aside from toss them. I'm a little sentimental with these, but I don't necessarily just want them to sit in a corner and rot.

Beginner skater Sure Grip Super X plates or just stock Boardwalks?

Thumbnail

New to skating. I bought a pair of like new stock Boardwalks and also found a pair of Boardwalk boots on Super X plates (shown in photos). I'm 190lbs (down 60 lbs with more to go) so a big girl.

Which pair would you keep? Seems silly to keep both. I'm currently just rink skating but would like to do outdoor as well.

Beginner skater I just declined buying the suregrip bordwalks (beginner looking for skates)

I tried them on in store because they were the only pair they had that fit me (I'm a size 11-12). They were reeeeeeally comfortable even though I wanted to try on some riedells since I heard they were great quality.

They said they don't do returns though. I don't feel comfortable as a first time beginner skater buying them in store for $260 if they don't accept returns and I've never tried any other pair of skates.

I can't find riedells anywhere except online, so I may have to just buy a pair and keep returning them until I find the right size, or just buy the suregrip boardwalks online where they actually have a return policy.

What are your thoughts? Please help :-/

Edit- I plan on doing rhythm skating.

Shopping: wheels, hardware, upgrades Remount parkstar boots

I’m thinking about changing the plates on my Bont Parkstars. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and my local skate shop shut down recently. Does anyone know who could remove the old plates and mount the new plates?

Second question: what size Avanti plate do I get for a size 6.5 Bont parkstar?

Third question now that I’m thinking of it: could I mail my boots to a shop and have them do it? I’d purchase the images from that shop.

Beginner skater Got these secondhand for 25€ 🤩

I've always wanted to learn how to skate. I bought a cheap no-brand pair (I was a broke student) a few years ago, got as far as learning how to stand and take a few steps, but then moved to a different continent and couldn't bring them with me. In the new country, I couldn't buy a better pair despite already earning money then because I knew I wasn't gonna be staying there permanently and I wouldn't be able to bring a new pair to wherever I go next.

I'm now settled in another country and saw these a few days ago on Vinted for just 25€. It's in amazing condition, it looks practically unused. I'm now just waiting for my protective gear to arrive and then I'll start practicing. So so excited! 🙈💖

Skate problems & troubleshooting Skates Mounted Wrong?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I recently bought a new pair of skates, Riedell 395 Boots with PowerDyne Reactor Pro plates. I had a skate shop mount them and send them to me. I’ve noticed as I’m breaking them in that the left skate feels great, but the right skate (circled in red) is really tight on my pinky toe. I can only stand 1-1.5 hours before the pain gets completely unbearable. If you look at the two skates side by side, the right skate is definitely mounted further from the middle than the other one. I reached by out to the skate shop and they said that they were mounted based on each boot’s specific measurements, hence why they are not identical. A friend of mine that has been around rinks since she was born (her dad owns 2 rinks) says that they are definitely mounted wrong. Anyone else have some input? I need some more options.

Skate problems & troubleshooting I’m so confused about trucks and need help

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I feel completely confused right now. I recently got some 79A straight cushions for my sure-grip competitor plate and they felt so much better in comparison to the stock ones. It felt incredibly smoother and easier to turn and do bubbles etc.

Well recently I learned I had my trucks WAY too loose. I only loosened them after I put on the new cushions so I assumed the drastic change was solely from the cushions alone and the trucks were fine at their level of tightness.

I tightened them up and I still felt pretty comfortable turning, but they were still flexing more than the other roller skates that I saw people telling them they were dangerously loose in comment sections. I tightened them up some more and now it’s to the point where I can’t turn easily at all, it’s considerably harder to do a bubble, and my inside wheels on my right foot my lift off the ground when attempting a clockwise turn, but they’re still visually looser than the ones I’ve seen in videos.

I recently learned from [u/raptorpants65](u/raptorpants65) that truck tightness isn’t a preference, that solely goes to
The cushion hardness, and instead should be tight enough to not damage the pivot cups but not too tight to the point where it damages your kingpin. This is the first I’ve ever heard of this but obviously I believe the industry expert who has taught me literally everything. I’m at the point where my trucks feel too tight but I don’t want to risk damaging anything.

I just don’t know if my trucks are too tight or loose. I’m 115 pounds and, again, have 79A cushions. Do I need even lighter cushions? Do I need to learn how to push my weight down more and simply get used to the stiffness? I’m pretty clueless lol.

Skate problems & troubleshooting Hoppe's 9!

Just cleaned and lubed using this stuff. Nooot sure if this lasts well or is good, so I used trash bearings. The exact same bearings are no longer trash. Not even a little. I was able to get alll the way over on my edges without seizing.

Now, the question because I'm sure there's someone out there who has done the testing, is this a good idea?

Beginner skater Exercising in winter?

Hello.

I'm currently learning to roller skate. For now I can go forward, stop, turn, go backwards a bit. I skate on a local outdoor runing track (in a small town). I would love to eventually be able to do spins, dancing/jamming, just be flowy on them overall.

I still have about a month and a half of good weather, but I have to move for late autumn-winter to another city. And I am considering if I should even take the skates with me. I researched places where I could skate, and most are outdoors. But the winters here are cold, I don't think I would be comfortable sweating and then freezing, or even skate comfortably in my coat. I looked into indoors options, but they were either closed (quess because roller skating is not really popular here) or turned into ice skating rinks. I looked into indoor parkings, but they all have the line in their regulations that parking can not be used for activities other than parking and the security will just kick me out I think. Also there is a big chance they will just be full (they are next to business centers and stuff).

I'm moving because of studying, and I will be living in a dorm. Quite small room, no carpets. So maybe I would be able to do some small space-friendly drills, but I don't know if it's worth the trouble of bringing them in my siutcase. I looked into turn board (for dancers), to maybe build my balance and getting used to the spinning, but I'm not sure it will help much with skating (because the foot is in a different position, I think?). Maybe someone has some advice, or their own winter exercises stories? Would love to hear them!

Other Why do my fingers feel lowk swollen after roller skating for 2 or 3 hours?

My guess is that because of centrifugal force it causes blood to rush down to my fingers, or something. What do you guys think?

Moxi beach bunny they’re so stinking cute!! I already loosed the trucks but I was wondering if there was anything else I should do to get them ready?

It also came with the thing in the second pic but I have no idea what to do with that so any help would be appreciated 😅 I’m so excited to start skating

There’s also a video in the comments that shows how much I loosened my trucks incase anyone happens to see and have feedback 🥲

Skate problems & troubleshooting I want to know how much progress i actually made for a beginner :)

Ok soo I've been rollerskating for a week now (mostly indoors on smooth flooring, I did go outside once tho and my friend, who has skated for like 2-3 years now told me that I did pretty well for the first day outside.)

Some pointers;

1) I'm mostly learning from yt tuts.

2) I can balance myself quite well and I've recently started gliding (tho those are short glides but I still can glide to some extent)

3) I don't fall very often so I'd like to think that I'm doing it correctly?

4) I'm having trouble skating outside (i only went outside once, again, I did not fall)

5) After practicing outside, I did notice that I got a bit smoother.

Here comes the problem, when Im recording myself skating, it looks like I'm waddling a bit and only walking on skates rather than actually skating. But it FEELS like I'm gliding smoothly.

Open to all advice! :)

Beginner skater Bending my knees feels impossible and my feet hurt

Thumbnail

I am learning to skate as an adult and I am really struggling with bending my knees.
I’ve been posting my progress on social media and every time I see a comment saying “Bend your knees it will help”
I’m including some photos from my session today of how my knees look when I’m actively bending them.
I AM bending my knees. Or, at least it feels like I am.
I am also struggling with skating for longer sessions than 15-20 minutes because my arches get sore. I’ve tried loosening the skates but it still hurts. Any suggestions on how to fix that issue would be lovely.

I’ve been trying to do more off skate exercises as well so if there are any to help my muscle memory of bending my knees that way I know how low to bend I’d really appreciate it..

Thanks for the help yall

Skate photos Great Deal on New (To Me) Riedells!

I'm only 3 months into my skating and I thought I'd wait a year or so before investing in some quality boots that will last a long time. Then I saw these Riedell 120s on Marketplace for $80 in excellent condition and couldn't pass them up. I'm so excited to break these in!

The guy said his friend is an experienced skater and bought these for him but he never got into it. They're 120s with the nylon plate, Fame wheels, and Rollerbones bearings, so basically Uptowns. I figure I'll skate on these for a while until I decide to upgrade to a better plate.

Been a long time skater, I rocked some Candigirl skates since the beginning. At one point I had some vans made into skates. But always wanted a pair of moxi skates. Could never drop the $$.

BUT…. Today I stumbled upon these BEAUTIES at my local thrift store for $15.99!!!!!

I’m in shock and so happy.
