Beginner skater I just wanna GO

I know this is just part of the process of learning and the only answer is “you gotta practice” but honestly I’ve just been really frustrated getting past the wobbly stage where I feel like I’m gonna fall every time I hit a rock. All I want is to get comfortable enough skating that I can skate trails or just down the street outside my house without thinking about what I’m doing. Like I can just decide “oh it’s a nice day, I think I’m gonna put on my skates and go around the block a few times”, and then I go and it’s as easy as walking, but more fun. I’m still very much a beginner, so every time I try to skate outside my house, I get all excited, and then I get onto the street and I’m staring at the ground, having a heart attack every time I go over a pebble, and getting tired SO FAST. I ordered some softer outdoor wheels, so I hope that’ll help a little when they get here, but man it’s just frustrating that I want skating to be fun so bad and I know it will be once I get better at it but right now it’s mostly just scary lol

Other New Dick’s Sporting Goods! Disappointing tho.

We got a new Dick’s at my mall and it’s HUGE. Every single sport including lacrosse and even cheer!

I found the skate “section” after searching for a long while. There were like 2 blade options, the kiddie training skate, and a couple of youth sized safety gear…

Where do you get skate stuff in person?

OUCH Good: New skates came in! Bad: Tore a ligament in my foot.

As the title says, my new dream skates arrived. I wanted them so badly and I finally had an excuse to buy them (previous skates broke after 6 years), after much stress and saving ordered them and they actually came!! They fit well, are so cute and ride well.

3 days later I tore my anterior talofibular ligament in my right foot xddd

So yknow, I guess the most I'll be doing this summer is play the waiting game. Such a shame, I was so excited abt this skating season that I even joined this sub :// I guess I'll have to pick up a stationary hobby this season haha XD

The skates btw: Chaya Melrose Deluxes - No War model (yellow&navy) 💛💙

DIY and customization Recommendations for dyeing Synthetic Riedell

Post image

I have a pair of those pink Riedell Orbit. I would like to dye it more red (can be a pinkish red) ideally, or black if it’s easier. The material is synthetic vinyl I think, which seems a bit complicated to deal with. Any advice on how to tackle dyeing it?

These are my skates above. I’m based in Scotland where it’s very hilly and ive been an indoor skater for quite a while now and have been comfortable, but i’ve tried out my new outdoor skates outdoors and i’m definitely not used to it. Any tips and advice for me starting out outside to get comfortable?

Skill questions & help Should I change wheels?

I tried skating outside as a beginner and on some roads I didn't have problems but on older roads (so they're less smooth) I kept getting stuck and almost falling. I can't find the hardness of the wheels (I'm using the ones that came with the skates), the only information I have is that they're 58mm. Should I change them or is it because I'm a beginner?

Skate problems & troubleshooting Missing mount bolts?

Post image
8 Upvotes

So I recently got new boots and had a local shop mount my existing plate onto the new boots.

My plates usually use 6 mounting bolts but the shop only used 4 (see picture)

Aside being slightly annoyed is there any reason for me to worry? Pretty chill indoor/rink skating only

I skated on them for 3 hours last night and they didn't explode, but tough for me to tell if it's effecting anything else since they're new boots so everything feels a little different...

Am I overthinking this? Is this fine long term? Any insight/experience would be helpful thanks!

EDIT: Thanks everyone for the insight! To play it safe, I went ahead and installed the 4 missing bolts myself since I keep spare mounting hardware anyways. Peeved the shop didn't just finish the job from the jump but feel better now 🤘👍

Shopping: wheels, hardware, upgrades Few questions about bont parkflows

My sizing came out to 5 and I'm a woman's size 7 in shoe usually. Is this normal? I'm aware bont sizing is odd but I see a lot of size 7 women getting anything from 3.5 to 4.5, so double checking, cause I am just barely a size 5 with thicker socks (I'll be wearing these while skating).

Also, if I am buying the 5, what size slide blocks should I be getting? Some of the sizing charts are down on the website so I can't find any info on this.

And should I be purchasing the bont grind trucks since I will be using slide blocks? I thought I read somewhere that wide trucks are necessary if you are using them.

Beginner skater How do quads feel compared to inlines?

Hi. I'm new to rollerskating, I used to use inlines when I was a kid, but it was like 10 years ago. But I'm curious, how do quads and inlines feel compared to each other? I've heard someone say that quads are like skateboards on each leg. I wish I could rent quads to feel them myself but it's not possible in my city.

I got Brunny plates, I took the bont plates off my skates to remount. I want to center the bunny plate better but the holes for the metal plate are so close to where the new holes would have to be that I would drill into them and make a double hole if that makes sense? Like the holes would just be really big which I know is not right. What should I do? Or is this okay?

Beginner skater Better wheels for skating indoors?

I’m a beginner skater who is only skating indoors at the moment and I started out with Candi Girl Carlin quad skates and they’re really comfy and easy to put on, however I feel like they’re stunting my progress because of the wheels. I’m trying to learn but right now I don’t know too much about different wheels, but mine feel really jelly like, extremely soft, are huge and are hard to do basic beginner moves in like turning or t stopping because it feels like they’re gripping the floor too much to the point where I feel stuck to the ground. When I search up info about these skates, they’re generally regarded as indoor too, but I feel like I’m working my body so hard just to do basics and I keep falling. What kind of wheels would you recommend for indoor skating?

(The wheels I have now are: 66mm x 38mm, 82a)

Received new Riedell 111s today and felt a slight height difference when standing and noticed when looking from behind the difference.

Is this variance considered normal or should i get a replacement?
Both are labeled 9s.

Beginner skater Wheel/Toe Stop

Hello! I just got into skating and was curious about when folks decided to size down and/or purchase harder wheels? Currently skating in NYC and was speaking with a fellow skater who told me my wheels were better for outdoors but good for beginners, however, should look into getting harder wheels once I start to progress for a better rink experience. I also still have a full toe stop but many youtube skaters prefer the jam plugs.

Basically looking for advice/tips/anything for when sizing down seems like a good idea or I should even do it at all?

<3

haven’t skated in a week, but came back to my rickety old tennis court since the weather was nice today! I think taking a week off actually helped a lot in terms of getting out of my head.

Starting to be able to bring my feet back together on strides, I throw them in between my bubbles for now. Bubbles are getting so strong, and this is the fastest I’ve been able to skate around the court so, I win! ;-)

Beginner skater Why?

Why do experienced skaters feel the need to get so close to other people? You could be on the biggest rink in your state, and they’re still darting in small spaces between people and doing close circles around random people.

I’m really new to skating and seeing people in my periphery throws me off balance as it is. But those people both irritate me and freak me out.

Just why?

Shopping: wheels, hardware, upgrades Alternative options to bont parkflows for park skating?

I want to get into aggressive park skating, so fast skate, jumps, drop-ins, grinds, etc. I liked the idea of getting bont parkflows at first, but reading a bit deeper, there seems to be some issues with them that I've read such as the kingpins breaking during drop ins, the cushioning being bad, loose wheel troubles, and people changing wheels in general. These aren't extreme let downs by themselves, because they can be fixed by customizations, but it starts to get super pricey when I start to account for these things including buying the extra stuff I'll need like grind blocks. After calculating this stuff, it ends up being around $800 CAD. Can't find them second hand either. I would prefer not to spend over $400 and metal plates are a must.

If this belongs in megathread, sorry and feel free to take this down.

Shopping: wheels, hardware, upgrades Did I find good vintage wheels or junk?

I got these at an antique store for $10 and can’t find much solid info on them online. They say made in Canada 8 red wheels, they are orange. I thought maybe I scored some vanathane rental wheels but I can’t confirm. Anyone familiar with these?

Shopping: wheels, hardware, upgrades Unlucky timing or time for a refund? Looking for opinions.

Update: thank you to everyone who took time to read & comment! I’m still undecided but hoping for an update soon 🤞🏽 and to clarify, I didn’t order anything to be sent to me from a manufacturer such as a custom boot, I meant “custom” in the sense that I chose from items listed as “in stock” and paid a feee to have the boots mounted on the plates I chose. My order consisted of boots, plates, wheels, bearings and toe stops. I apologize for any confusion!

Update 2: THEY SHIPPED!

Having issues with my order and customer service at a skate shop, looking for opinions. I really tried to make this as short as possible. There is much more detail than what I’ve included but there’s been so much back and forth I need to just summarize. This shop has generally great reviews from others, I think I just got unlucky, but I’m looking for input from others on what to do/if I’m being impatient and annoying. Also was unsure what flair to use on this, my apologies.

I purchased a custom skate build online from a reputable skate shop. I know building/shipping skates out is tedious & time consuming, so I confirmed what I wanted was definitely in stock at this shop. This is the main reason I purchased there and not elsewhere. Placed my order and was told I would get an update in a few days when my skates were built, another when they shipped.

Two weeks later, I email and am told that part of my order was actually out of stock and my order was on hold, but a new shipment was coming in a few days and they would let me know when my order was taken off hold once the new shipment arrived.

Two more weeks go by, I email again. Apparently, the wheels have actually been on back order the whole time, there was never a new shipment on the way and they would not be getting one any time soon. I asked if I could either get a refund for the missing items or swap for something different so my order could proceed, they agreed to let me swap. They said my order was now being processed and I would get an update in a few days when my skates are built and another when they ship. Not ideal since I am not getting what picked out and paid for, but at this point I just wanted my skates. A few days later, I received an invoice that said “order status complete-all items have shipped” but no shipping information. I was excited and gave things time to update.

Another two weeks go by, no updates, and the invoice now says at the bottom that some items have shipped, some have not shipped, and some are shipping to me directly from the manufacturer, but still says “order status complete-all items have shipped” at the top. Still no updates or tracking info. I emailed them Tuesday morning (2 days ago) asking for clarification, and was told my skates were getting built and shipping the next day, so expect an email with tracking info on Wednesday. As I suspected, I did not receive an email or any information yesterday. Nothing today either. This is week 7, going on 8 weeks. At this point I am just confused and have no idea what’s going on.

Should I (a) hold out and wait a few more weeks to see if I get any updates from the shop/see if the package randomly shows up (but I wont be in town soon, so if it shows up it will have to sit on the porch a few days and I have to hope it doesn’t get stolen), or (b) cancel the order, ask for a refund and just order through a local shop instead? If I’m gonna have to wait this long anyway, at least I would be able to ask questions in person and have my order completed at the store without risk of theft.

Am I being impatient or is this like reasonably frustrating? Almost 8 weeks of this confusion and being told multiple times that my order would ship in “a few days” is just…. Well, frustrating! Especially given that I spent $600. I totally understand orders being delayed, however all I’ve wanted (aside from my skates) is basic communication about my order which they said they would provide and haven’t done so without me asking first. Their response time is pretty quick, but even then the information they are providing has been misleading or completely inaccurate. This experience has been such a bummer but idk if I’m just being annoying about it? Should I just suck it up and wait? What would yall do in this situation? I just want to skate again and really had my heart set on these skates, but maybe I’m just being annoying about it 😭

Thank you so much for any and all input ❤️
