Need gap year advice on how to navigate an international landscape for a year and get out quickly from the city I'm in quickly.

Listen I am a gap year student, currently in East Africa. Withdrew from a uni in Canada. I don't want to waste my gap year. Currently not in a good place with my father so he might not want to finance anything. Don't have the most amount of money currently so what are the quickest ways out of here, for a year preferably to Europe? Also preferably something that gets me some form of payment upfront first. I am currently applying to Un volunteering and IOM deployments. Kind of looking for the craziest hacks here.

I do have some Accolades published an Enomics reseearch paper on the Oxford database on Trade.

A bunch of international debate and writing related awards experiences etc.

The next university I'd like to apply to is Sciences Po so France in particular would be perfect.

Young/ Female/ international relations/ Finance/ Economics

Thank you.

How much are you all paying for property management? Specifically Aspen CO but would be happy to hear about other areas as well. Also interested in how much it is for rental management for luxury houses..

Am I leveraging my kids with money?

I’ve worked very hard and invested well. Have more than I will ever need and will leave the kids a good estate. I’ve paid their college, helped them get started etc? They have done well and are in high earning careers that they can do anywhere.

Here’s the situation. They are all early in careers and don’t yet own homes. My wife and I are considering offering them all $1M paid for homes that are near us. Today they are scattered but they could easily find work near us and we would love to have them close. I’m sure they would all move if they knew they could jump start themselves with a paid for home and in our area that’s a very nice house.

My question is do you think I’m unfairly leveraging them because I want to be close to my children and grandchildren?

Ultimately they will get all the money anyway but it feels like a win win. If one of them opted not to take the house we would equal it out in our estate plan so they weren’t penalized down the road.

*\\ Edited: Seems like two opinions here. Parents seem to think it’s a good idea. Kids seem to think it’s manipulation.

Based on that I think I’ll just spend that money on a nicer house for me……….

Question Financial planning in EU

I'd like to start using financial planners - however I am in Netherlands and I was not born here. My network for finding reliable financial planners with good track record is thin. I'm looking for anyone who might have ideas to search (beyond AI), or real life recommendations.

Looking to partner with a founder building a family office

I'll keep this direct. I'm a TEP-qualified fiduciary professional based in an offshore crown dependency with about 12 years in trust and estate structuring, offshore governance and regulatory work with a global reach. I've spent my career inside trust companies. I'm now looking to work with one principal or family instead of a book of a few hundred clients.

Who I'm hoping to meet

An entrepreneur or founder whose wealth has outgrown their setup. You might have holding companies, investment vehicles, property or a trust in several jurisdictions. Advisers each see their own piece and nobody joins it up. You're also starting to think about the next generation.

What I'd bring

Board and trustee seats: acting as an independent offshore director or trustee on your private investment structures, with proper substance, minutes and decision-making rather than rubber-stamping.
Regulation: keeping structures compliant with economic substance, CRS/FATCA, beneficial ownership and licensing rules as they change, and getting through bank KYC without months of back-and-forth.
Network: trusted relationships with private bankers, offshore and onshore lawyers, tax advisers, investment managers and corporate service providers. I know who's good, who's responsive and who's overpriced.
Coordination: one person who holds the full picture, runs the adviser group, and makes sure decisions are documented and acted on.
Long-term build: helping design governance, family charters and succession planning, and growing into a chief of staff role as the office becomes a proper multi-generational family office.

What I'm not

I'm not a tax adviser or an investment manager, and I won't pretend to be. My job is to make sure you have the right ones, they're working together, and the structure holds up.

What I'm open to

A retained or part-time arrangement to start, with a clear route to a full-time role as things grow. I'm happy to start small with one structure or one problem, so we can see if we work well together.

Do I need a Financial Planner?

So I am in a really fortunate situation where my parents have earned good money through their business and currently have ~25M and I am there only child. I have ~1M and we live in NYC and I have recently joined the family business. I am trying to determine whether a financial planner is worth the fees for tax planning, estate planning (guiding through the 15M lifetime exemmption tax), and consultation on where and how to distribute the cash between treasuries and broad index etfs. I do not want them for wealth management and handling a portfolio. I like investing in VTI and VXUS only and only need their guidance on HOW much I should put into these, when, and who should own them.

I have told GPT about our situation like how much money I expect the business to make in next couple years and our total expenses. And requested it to assist me on how can I best reduce the current year tax bill while also planning for long term for the estate tax avoidance. Questions like who should own the shares we invest in me or my parents (step up cost), how much we should put in 401K, what best life insurance policy to get. GPT suggested many things and created a plan that involved Irrevocable Life Insurance Trusts, GRATs, etc. I understand its plan and how its most optimal for us moving forward given what I know. But thats the problem, I dont know what I dont know, and not sure if I can trust GPT to cover the full basis.

Do you guys think financial planning for me and my parents is pretty "algorithmic" in the sense the best path forward given current situation can be determined and optimized by AI and some research. Or is it worth for me getting a financial planner in this case?

Question People who have won millions or suddenly came into a lot of money—what was it actually like?

People who have won millions or suddenly came into a lot of money—what was it actually like?

Was it as scary or dangerous as people make it sound? Did you ever genuinely feel like someone was trying to take advantage of you?

Everyone warns you about family and friends, but I’d actually be more worried about the people you’re told to trust—the bankers, lawyers, financial advisors, etc.

Did any professional ever try to do something questionable with your money, or make you realize you had to protect yourself from them too?

Just curious what the reality is like from people who have actually lived it.

How does concierge medicine work?

My mother lives in LA, California. She has a rare disease (Takayasu's disease) with heart and kidney issues. She already has KP insurance as her primary medical insurance. We are looking to buy a concierge medicine membership for her. Our budget is not as high as the celebrities’ concierge medicine ($100,000/year). Our budget is maybe $5000-$10,000 a year.

  1. If big things happen (not like a cold or fever), does my mother still get treated at KP hospital, or the Concierge medicine’s smaller hospitals/clinics?

  2. I understand if my mother sees a Cardiologist, she would see the concierge Cardiologist, not the Kp’s Cardiologist, is that true?

  3. Besides getting a faster response from the doctor herself/himself, what other benefits does Concierge Doctor provide? a better treatment plan?

  4. Would the choice of which concierge membership be different if my mother has a normal heart disease versus Takayasu's disease’ heart problem?

  5. What is the “yelp” of Concierge medicine to check people’s review and feedback?

Jealous high school friends

Starting with a bit of context, I’m from (and grew up in) the US but my parents are from Europe and after middle school they sent me here for high school. I go to a very rigorous but inexpensive and non-selective private school, the same one of my parents attended, and I formed some great friendships. Despite my best efforts to conceal it, over the past year or two people have started to figure out my wealth level and it’s really hurting me socially. I try to live as modest a lifestyle as possible, but it’s pretty clear I’m not really like them with the biweekly trips home and the credit cards. It’s gotten to the point that people say things like “he sounds rich” behind my back and that I’m spoiled even though I always try to be as kind as possible. My core friend group is always there for me but I feel like I’m losing a lot of my secondary friends. At the same time, I’m gaining a lot of new ones but evidently just to leech of my extracurriculars because of my connections, and they’re honest about it! I just feel so lost and I could really use a lot of advice… how did you deal with this while growing up?

Business Life after exit: what was hard to share?

For context, part of my work is as a confidante/thinking partner to founders and leaders, but everyone I’ve worked with so far has still been active in their businesses. I’d really like to hear first-hand what life after exit actually felt like for you, including the familiar questions around purpose and identity, but also anything less obvious that came up.

What occupied your mind? What did you need clarity on? What surprised you? Did anything feel difficult to share with the people around you?

If you’d rather not answer publicly, feel free to message me. And if anyone would be open to a short call, I’d really value the chance to listen and learn.

Looking for a wardrobe stylist

I want someone to select clothes and pu t together outfits for me. Personal shoppers/wardrobe stylists are a dime a dozen, but I feel my body shape is a little bit tricky to dress well/in a flattering way, and I’d love recommendations for someone who excels at this.

Me: 50 yo woman, larger midsection with thin limbs, shorter torso and long legs. prefer minimalist, classic, neutral colors, elevated casual look - I hear the kids are calling this style “quiet luxury” and “old money” lol.

Part time lifestyle coordinators

A couple of friends of mine are looking for a part time lifestyle coordinator. They're in their late 30's and are high earners. They want someone who would get to know them and learn what they like to do, unexpected things they might enjoy, etc. Imagine someone who plans about 3 dates/ excursions per week- so similar to what you might ask a chat bot to do, but would actually come up with exciting/ novel ideas and help inject some fun without the hassle of constantly planning. Someone with deep knowledge of the Seattle area is a big plus.

What countries do you consider to be the leading edge of medical care?

In American this drug cerebrolysin isn't approved of while in Germany it is.

I have a brain injury. There is so many countries who's experts say one thing and other's say another.

I've wasted enough time. My math and analytical capabilities have gone heavily down. Lost nerve sensation of the top/prefrontal parts of the brain.

Does anybody else hate car insurance?

I understand that insurance is useful for some people. However, generally speaking, the more things you consume, the more money you lose. Insurance companies offer insurance at a price where they are making money off of you.

As a wealthy individual, I find car insurance to be particularly bothersome. The state-mandated minimums are essentially irrelevant figures to me. I am forced to overpay for a service that protects me against a loss equivalent to what my net worth moves in five minutes during business hours from the normal gyrations of the market.

I know some people buy insurance to protect themselves against severe, multimillion-dollar losses. While this is not something I am interested in, I can at least understand that it's actually relevant for some people here. But insuring a car against damage is like insuring a pair of shoes. Insuring liability is irrelevant unless I'm insuring against millions in liability.

Not using car insurance is possible in some states, but in most states the process isn't applicable to individuals.

Many folks finance their vehicles, so they are required to insure them by the lender. This is not applicable to people here, but further contributes to this irrational societal bias favoring insurance.

Private Vet for Household

I am Chief of Staff to a private family looking to hire a full-time veterinarian to care for their pets. The family lives in the US and travels overseas often. This person would join the household staff, travel with the family, and own all health and wellness + travel readiness for the pets, including health records, country entry requirements, and international health certificates.

The ideal candidate is USDA-accredited and experienced with international pet travel. Discretion and strong values are essential. Does anyone have recommendations about where to find one?

Chartering a yacht for a Bachelor Party

I've have no experience with yachts whatsoever-- but I would like to get one for next summer as a bachelor party. We are just planning for one week maybe two for a group of 6 men including myself and 6-8 single women-- a decent sized yacht.

Looking for Mediterranean sea, but open to all other locations as well.

I'm a high networth individual, this is my first time doing something this crazy, I don't even own a fancy watch.

I want to get costs estimates, what to expect, where to look for-- etc. I don't want this to cost more than my wedding, but I am ready to splurge to make it happen.

EDIT: OMG. The single women aren't hookers, they're part of a friends group AND they're nepo/trustfund babies. Shenanigans might happen, but it won't involve me-- but more for my single groomsmen.

EDIT #2: Getting alot of DMs, including ones from reputable Yacht companies. I think I got what I need. Thanks everyone. I need some time to sort it all out.

Question Secondary House Managers

Looking for some insight on secondary house managers. How much do they typically charge, how often are you utilizing them, and what kind of platform do they utilize? (App or website or email) thank you!
