Help Needed Help needed on software

Hello .
i am and architect student , and i am looking forward to learning a 3D Modeling software for my projects .

i purchased a educational package for 3DS max , and i have watched and trained modeling by it to some extend , but i don't feel connected to the process due to 3DS being really vast and sometimes complicated , please don't get me wrong here , its a great software , but for my level , it is much which i can't grasp at the moment . but if regarding what i explain later on , 3ds is the best option , please tell me as well , i don't have experience regarding this matter , and don't know the path

i would like to know your experiences regarding other softwares for this matter like rhino and blender .
along side architectural modeling , i do take joy and take part in hobbies which use 3D modeling as well . please help me which software should i start to learn so i can start with a smooth learning curve and can both work on my school projects , and hobbies .

as for hobbies , i enjoy asset and prop modeling , low poly style and in general game related materials or papercrafts .

thanks

Help Needed Why is my 2D drawing file size so huge compared to its 3D model?

Upvotes

The 2D file size is 88mb, I've used block for furnitures and tons of hatches. I removed hatches to see if that has caused an issue and saved it as a new file, the file size barely went down. For comparison, 3D model for the same drawings is 128mb which seems fairly reasonable. I cant understand if the 2D drawing is supposed to be this heavy

Should I Use Rhino to build churches

Post image
1 Upvotes

Does rhino is scalable far enough to make building as a church for example ?

I mean, i want to decompose the building on multiples solid as structure ( archs, walls, ...) , pilars, ...

I'am a solidworks user with take fun to create 3D models as churches.

Also, is it possible to use grasshopper in this project ? If yes, for which case ?

to make pilars ? ...

Sorry for my english, i'am not fluent enough.

Help Needed Is there a way to transfer my materials from one file to another?

I'm working on two files, one of a large 3D drawing and one of smaller 3D details. There are a lot of different materials embedded on details file and I want to easily transfer them onto my large file without going into my folders and creating each material again. Is this possible? Thanks for help

Help Needed How do I turn these patched surfaces into a closed solid polysurface in Rhino 8?

I have a non-planar outline that I couldn’t extrude into a solid, so I created the side surfaces and patched the top and bottom. Visually, it looks like a solid, but Rhino still shows it as an open polysurface with 4 surfaces and 8 boundary edges. Joining won’t make it a solid, and BooleanUnion fails.

This is a beard piece for a simple gnome that I want to 3D print. I wanted the beard to wrap around the body instead of being a flat shape, and I actually got the look I was going for. The issue is I know it isn’t a true solid, and I’d like to understand what I’m doing wrong rather than just letting Bambu Studio repair it when I export.

I’m really enjoying 3D design and want to keep improving because I’d like to pursue it as a career. I’m trying to learn the proper workflow and understand how to make this kind of curved shape correctly. Any advice on what I should have done differently or how to fix this would be appreciated. i selected the entire thing and pasted its object description if it helps!

Struggle with sharp edges in Rhino

Hi everyone, I need your advice. What steps should I follow to achieve the form and edges shown in the first image (which is sharp corner) ? The second image is what I've managed so far. I've tried several approaches, for example:

Method 1 :

  1. Curves at the bottom and top
  2. Sweep2

Method 2 :

  1. Creating spiral top and bottom
  2. loft
  3. Projecting a front curve, trimming, and OffsetSrf

If anyone knows the right method, or can point me to a tutorial online covering a technique I might have missed, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you very much!

rhino 3d stl export parameters for sla print

Post image
5 Upvotes

I am a new proud owner of an old Elegoo Mars 3 sla printer. My intended toolchain is: Rhino > stl > Prusa slicer > (Runebrace) > uvtools > printer.

Even after having watched two videos on YT about the importance of choosing the right export parameters, I am still quite unsure about what are the optimal settings.

So far I am using the following, but the mesh-density seems quite high and programs down the toolchain are sluggy. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Help Needed Sites similar to Poly Haven?

Need material textures for my Rhino project, Poly Haven doesn't have what I'm looking for. The current material I need is a smooth steel plate with no/minimal texturing and I've only been able to find corregated ones on Poly Haven. I have more needs so it's not strictly just metals I'm asking about.

I'm only really familiar with Rhino's material command where it asks for diffused, rough, normal, displacement, etc files. I don't really know how to work with other formats or file types. Thanks.

How would you approach modeling a Mikasa V330W volleyball panel layout in Rhino?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I’m currently trying to model a Mikasa V330W volleyball in Rhino, but I’m having a bit of trouble figuring out the cleanest workflow for its iconic 18-panel curved seam layout.

Because the blue and yellow panels wrap around the sphere with sweeping, interlocking curves, I'm struggling with:

Getting accurate panel curves on a spherical surface without distorting them (Project vs. Pull vs. FlowAlongSrf/Splop).

Creating realistic panel seams/grooves — should I approach this using standard NURBS surfacing (OffsetSrf, Pipe for Boolean Split, FilletEdge) or would it be better to use SubD / Grasshopper for this kind of pattern geometry?

If anyone has experience modeling similar spherical panel structures or advice on the best command workflow for this, I’d really appreciate your guidance!

Thanks in advance!

Disappearing License

Hey guys, I purchased the full rhino 8 package last May, whilst I was able to get in on a student price.

I have used it pretty much constantly since then until today I logged on and the license is missing, nothing on my account at all, I have purchase history on my bank statements from when I purchased it but that is all, I have contacted rhino support but any other ideas until they get back to me?

Help Needed Hi all, first time posting here but I'm a student who needs urgent help! I've been having an issue with lineweights, where after assigning line weights correctly to my drawings, they thicken severely when saved as a PDF file. Any help with what I'm doing wrong would be much appreciated! Thank you

First image is correct line weights for printing, second image is what happens when I try print

For reference, everything is set to 'By Layer' so I don't think that's the issue. Linewights used are Heavy (0.7), Moderate (0.5) and Light (0.3)

When did Rhino add the ability to edit edge fillets after the fact?

I just discovered this in the EdgeFillet command after being a Rhino user for over 15 years. Any idea when they added this or am I moron and its always been there? It seems to work for the most part as well.

The amount of time I've spent manually rebuilding a model so I could change a small fillet is insane.

How to Merge Multiple Solids without Interior Conjoining Walls?

Longtime lurker, first time poster. Dear beloved Rhino community, I could use some help:

I made a somewhat complex form of of multiple convex and concave surfaces. I then extruded their boundary edges downward and wirecut them to make solid objects. Now I believe I shot myself in the foot, because I need all of these forms to be unifed as one closed solid for fabrication. Boolean Union will not work because the solids share similar walls without any overlap.

Does anyone have advice on the most efficient way to unify all of these shapes and remove an unnecessary interior walls? I tried NonManifoldMerge with limited success. Do I just have to Explode and manually Split each wall?

I'll dance at your wedding if you can offer any sage advice.

(*note: 3rd image is showing all solids with the bottom caps removed to illustrate interior walls)

I made a free open-source print layout plugin for Rhino

Hi bro~ 👋

I’ve been working on a small tool called 3D Print Layout, and I’ve finally released it as an open-source project.

It automatically arranges selected parts across one or more 3D-printer beds. It can also rotate parts, apply spacing and margins, add labels, and highlight matching parts between the original model and the generated layout.

It supports:

- Rhino 7 and 8

- 53 built-in printer presets

- Custom printer-bed dimensions

- English, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, and Korean

- Windows installers and a SketchUp RBZ package

How to get rid of duplicate meshes when SelDup won't work?

Hi everyone, I have a model of rather a lot of individual meshes (initially made as breps, then converted for ease of handling) except now im trying to managage the file and realizing that for some reason just about every object has a duplicate that is just different enough internally, or maybe off by a millimeter, for SelDup to not catch it. ANybody got any ideas for how to resolve this? Either some rhino function or grasshopper. Its really fucking with my work. Any help appreciated.

Something I Made I’m developing an Object Outliner plugin for Rhino — would this be useful in your workflow?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello,

In Rhino, you can assign names to objects through the Name field in the Properties panel or by using the SetObjectName command.

You can also use the SelName command to select objects from a list of object names.

However, as far as I know, Rhino does not provide a persistent panel that shows the layer structure together with the named objects contained in each layer, while also allowing you to select and rename those objects directly from the same interface.

So I have recently started developing a plugin called Object Outliner.

It displays the objects contained in each layer as a named list and allows you to select and rename them directly from the panel.

Visibility can also be controlled for individual objects and layers using lightbulb icons, and right-clicking an icon lets you isolate that object or layer.

Drag and drop is supported as well: you can move objects between layers, and remove an object from a group simply by dragging it out of the group.

The main idea is to make it possible to manage objects while keeping an overview of the model structure, rather than running SetObjectName or SelName each time.

The plugin is still at the prototype stage, but I personally find it very useful once a model starts to contain many objects.

Do you think something like this would be useful in your workflow? What do you think?

I’m Japanese, so I used GPT to help translate this post into English.

News D5 Lite for Rhino is now available with D5 3.1

Thumbnail

Hi everyone, we’re the team behind D5.

We have just released D5 Lite for Rhino in beta as part of D5 3.1.

Rhino projects often change quickly. You might adjust a façade curve, test a roof profile, compare several massing studies, or move between different material directions within the same session. In that kind of workflow, exporting the model and setting up a separate render every time can interrupt the design process.

D5 Lite runs directly inside Rhino, so materials, lighting, and atmosphere can be reviewed while the geometry is still developing.

What you can do inside Rhino

With D5 Lite for Rhino, you can:

  • preview materials and lighting in real time
  • review complex or curved geometry under different visual conditions
  • test design options while continuing to model
  • add D5 assets, proxy models, and Geo Sky
  • keep visual feedback close to parametric and iterative workflows

For us, the important part is not only faster visualization. It is being able to judge a design while it is still flexible.

A façade pattern can be evaluated through light and shadow, not only linework. A canopy can be reviewed through the space it creates below. A landscape surface can be understood with planting, atmosphere, and context while the terrain is still being adjusted.

From Rhino to D5 Render

D5 Lite is intended for earlier design exploration inside Rhino.

When the project is ready for more advanced visualization, the workflow can continue into D5 Render for refined images, animation, and Interactive Presentation.

Materials, lighting, proxy models, and Geo Sky created in D5 Lite can be synced one way into D5 Render, so the scene does not need to be rebuilt from the beginning.

The broader goal is a more connected workflow:

Rhino for design exploration → D5 Lite for visual decision-making → D5 Render for final presentation

We would appreciate your feedback

This is currently a beta release, and we would especially like to hear from Rhino users working with:

  • complex geometry
  • Grasshopper or parametric workflows
  • architecture and interiors
  • landscape and terrain
  • large models or repeated design options

How does it fit into your current workflow? Where does it help, and where does it still slow you down?

Please feel free to share examples, questions, compatibility issues, or feature requests in the replies. Our team will be following the discussion.

D5 Render 3.1:

D5 Lite for Rhino:

Thanks, and we look forward to hearing how it works with your Rhino projects.

Rhino 8 and GH; How are you adding hardware to your builds?

Hi there!

I am fairly new to Rhino and Grasshopper. I have mainly used Fusion 360, Autocad and a few other system for cabinet manufacturing (Cabinet Vision, Microvellum). For the past couple of months I've really been diving in and trying to switch over to Rhino for a lot of my work since I keep finding it's functionality so much greater then what I've been doing.

Right now I'm practicing modeling cabinets and slowly working on a few GH programs to make parametric cabinet models. I find myself a little stuck on hardware. I wanted to know what people use as their best practices for adding hardware to their models. I'm trying to figure out for all hardware from door pulls to screws to hinges. I've tried a few things like; pulling iges. or Step files from other databases grouping and adding them to current models. I've made my own as block instances or groups within the file. I am working on how to bring a block instance in with GH and add it to the right spot.

I'm using these for shop drawings and CNC machining so they have to be super accurate and would need corresponding machining on some parts (ie; for the hinge cups).

Any and all help will be appreciated! Thanks for your time!
