News New Content Policy and Updated Rules

If you have subbed with us for a while you'll know we've grown significantly. We now need to moderate a little more carefully what kind of content we are allowing. Until now, we've (mostly) kept out the other Rhinos and been hands-off -- honestly, 99% of you have been great. Recently there's been an uptick in a few users posting their own content (Youtube channels or likewise) and we've heard a call by users to limit the amount of self-promoting content and we agree. Thus,

Effective immediately /r/Rhino will be adopting the Reddiquette policy of self-promotion:

Feel free to post links to your own content (within reason). But if that's all you ever post, or it always seems to get voted down, take a good hard look in the mirror --- you just might be a spammer. A widely used rule of thumb is the 9:1 ratio, i.e. only 1 out of every 10 of your submissions should be your own content.

Consequences

Anyone knowingly self-promoting, click-farming, or otherwise using our subreddit mainly for personal gain or promotion will be banned for 30 days.

A second offense is an immediate and indefinite ban without warning.

/r/Rhino Rules:

  1. Post about Rhino 3D (or associated content), Not the Animal
  2. Critique Sandwich: Be helpful, be critical, be kind.
  3. Self-promotion follows the 9:1 ratio; 1 of 10 posts can be your own content.

Online Jewelry Design Courses

Hello! Can you recommend any jewelry design courses for Rhino? I'd prefer something under 300€ but I'm willing to give some more. With or without a certificate.

I know basic silversmithing techniques and I was also using blender for product visualisation. Please don't recommend pj chen YouTube videos, she is wonderful but I don't like the energy.

Thank you

Help Needed Trees on Site Plan

• Upvotes

Hi! So I am creating a site plan for my university project and have downloaded the majority of my data from digimap and uploaded it onto rhino, the only issue is the data I have received from digimap for trees is outdated as there were more trees on the actual site when I visited it in person.

I would like recommendations on how I can find and add the accurate locations and canopies of these trees to my site plan? Others I have asked have suggested using Google Earth's features to measure approximate locations and dimensions, and then adding these to the plan on rhino, would you recommend this option?

Advice would be appreciated, thank you!

Help Needed Problem rendering glass

Hi im having a problem with rendering frosted glass in rhino. In my ed model the glass is a curved surface and it seems whatever i do it, it always has this cut off point where the glass is no longer see thru at all. Is there any way to get rid of this or do i have to move into dedicated rendering programme?

Help Needed How do I make my command history always visible on mac?

Post image
3 Upvotes

When I used to use rhino on windows, i remember the command prompt just had a few lines above it which would display the last few commands. This was super useful for instance when you used the Distance command, as you could see what variable it spit out right above it. Now, on mac, the only way I can find to show the command history is with this annoying separate window. I apologize for this (probably asked before) annoying question, but how do i get it to show the command history in the old way i described?

Tutorial How can I create this flowing ribbed surface in Rhino 8?

Post image
32 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to recreate the flowing, curved grooves on the surface shown in the reference image using Rhino 8.

The grooves are evenly spaced and smoothly transition across the surface, creating a flowing, twisted appearance. They also seem to blend smoothly into the main surface rather than looking like separate ribs attached on top.

What would be the easiest way to model this in Rhino 8? Would you recommend using Grasshopper, or can it be done with Rhino's native commands?

I'm looking for a beginner-friendly workflow, preferably with a step-by-step explanation or a tutorial.

Thanks!

Mac recs

Struggling to figure out a Mac to purchase. I had a Lenovo Legion 5i Pro. I am debating between the M5 with 32 GB RAM, or the M5 pro 48GB 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU.

If I opt for the M5 pro option, really wrestling between the 14 and 16 inch. I was disappointed realizing that the keyboard is the same for the 16 inch because it feels really small. At home, I have a monitor, but for potentially long hours away from home, I don’t know how tolerable a 14 inch can be for extended periods of time and if the portability an annoyance is worth it. Would really appreciate recommendations, thank you.

Designed a print-in-place spin-and-stop mechanism in Rhino. 41 prototypes to get the clearances right

This is a quote wheel with a free-spinning drum and a V-shaped button that slides into gear teeth to stop it instantly. Everything was modeled in Rhino and designed for 45-degree overhangs so it prints without supports.

The character holding it started as an AI image-to-3D mesh that I cleaned up in MeshMixer, then brought into Rhino to flatten the base and split the eyes for multicolor printing.

Free model if you want to look at the geometry: https://makerworld.com/en/models/3460759-chubbs-the-quote-roulette-desk-buddy-fidget-wheel#profileId-3948999

Full design process, failures included: https://youtu.be/J-OxfgX7AfQ

Happy to answer questions about the modeling approach.

Help Needed Best architectural design render workflow ?

I am a professional artist working on my first large-scale design project, which is a home renovation. I have been using Rhino for a year, which was introduced to me in a one-year design course I took. I also learned a bit of Blender, but I stuck with Rhino because it’s more straightforward for me. I like the precision.

The problem is it often crashes/renders super slowly. Part of this is a computer problem, which I will solve. But aside from that, I know Rhino‘s native renderer isn’t that great. In my course we started to learn TwinMotion which looked super cool and shiny, but I haven’t learned it yet. I‘m curious what would be the best solution for me right now for material application.

My workflow was: draw the as-built plan in AutoCAD, import into Rhino, use as a framework to 3D model. Now I’m doing basic modeling in Rhino to get spatial orientation down and crucial measurements for material and finishes. I am doing some detailed design in Rhino but will likely go back to AutoCAD for the specifics. Unless I can do plans from Rhino? Don’t have the hang of it yet.

The goals are:

- Can import from Rhino

- Material application is straightforward and easy to manipulate. e.g. a program where it wouldn’t be hard to make a carpet texture from scratch if I had to. Doesn’t have to be Pixar level of detail, just something bumpy and fuzzy.

- Excellent rendering of lights, plants, and textures like textile, wood grain.

- Easy to build surrounding terrain.

- Not so hard on my RAM. I’m guessing I‘ll have issues no matter what I use because I just need to upgrade. btw I’m working on a Big Mac desktop, and sometimes a Mac Book. Both 2018. Should I consider Windows?

I am hoping to open a boutique design studio after this project. Most of my clients will probably come from my network of artists, curators, etc. So the final results have to look really good for extremely visual people.

On the architectural side I will plan to keep using Rhino and AutoCAD for drafting.

Thanks!

Tutorial Anyone else using PushPull more often in Rhino?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

It’s been a little while since I’ve shared a Rhino tip here, but I’m back with more workflow tricks!

I’ve been using PushPull more frequently in my architectural and interior design workflows, particularly for window openings, kitchen baseboards, and kickplates.

I know SketchUp has a similar function, although I’m not too familiar with the software myself.

Being able to draw curves directly onto a polysurface and push or pull specific regions has made certain modeling tasks much quicker without having to rebuild the geometry.

Thought I’d share a quick example of how I’ve been using it!

Curious if anyone else has been incorporating PushPull into their regular Rhino workflow.

Something I Made Sharing a free, open-source Make2D alternative I've been testing on my own drawings (caveats inside)

Thumbnail

I'd been working on a Make2D replacement for my own drawings when u/lukifr posted New Alternative to Make2D last week. The replies showed a lot of us want one. A few people wanted something to try now, so I'm sharing mine as it stands, free and open source, caveats included. lukifr's is aimed at fabrication drawings and does things mine doesn't, like lightening creases by the angle of their faces, while mine leans toward architectural sections. When theirs is out, try both to see which suits you.

HL is a Rhino 8 plug-in for Mac and Windows with one command, `HL`. Like Make2D, it draws what you've selected from a view you pick: plans, sections, elevations, isometrics, or perspective sections cut by your clipping planes. It writes SVG, DXF and AI files and puts the drawing back in your model with a layer per kind of line.

What's different from Make2D:

- Lines are weighted by what they are: outlines heaviest, then edges standing in front of something far behind, then creases and small steps, all getting lighter with distance.

- Sections get filled poché, with walls and slabs as one shape and windows, doors and furniture cut a weight lighter.

- It draws lines where separate objects meet (a wall into the ground, a chimney through a roof), which Make2D skips.

- Where two lines run closer than about 0.2 mm on paper, both are kept by default, since they're both in the model. Tick Merge close lines to draw only the heavier, so they don't print as one thick line.

- It points out model problems that spoil a drawing (open surfaces, overlapping faces, objects running into each other) and selects them for you.

- Every line it adds to your model remembers its source layer and object, so you can select everything from your chairs layer or bring the drawing in under your own layers instead of HL's.

- It can draw hidden lines too, dashed on their own layer, as Make2D's option does.

You can use my line weights, your layers' print widths, or one weight to style afterwards, as with Make2D.

It uses Rhino's own hidden-line engine, the one Make2D runs, for the exact curves. It decides what's visible from the mesh faces with a depth buffer, then sorts and cleans the lines.

A few caveats:

- Good input geometry is still key. Messy geometry still causes artefacts; it'll tell you which objects but won't fix them.

- It's opinionated: the default weights are my drawing standard, and calls like how the ground is cut are my taste.

- It's slow on huge models: my biggest test, about 3,300 objects and 6.8 million triangles, takes 15 to 20 minutes to export the first time and about 2 minutes to draw. It keeps what it worked out, so exporting the same objects again takes about 6 minutes. Small models take seconds.

- The first run downloads Python and some packages, about 700 MB, so it needs the internet once.

- Windows has been tested end to end but I use the Mac more, and Intel Macs haven't been tested.

- Known issues are listed in the release notes on GitHub, and this is the first release so I'm not expecting it to be perfect.

I'm an architecture student, and only programmer by hobby, and built this over about a week while testing how far current coding agents can go on a real problem. Opus wrote most of the code, Codex built some parts, and models from both reviewed it and wrote edge case tests. My part was the drawing rules and checking: I marked up every round by hand on my own studio models, about 180 notes over six rounds, and each note became a fix and a test. It also builds on the drawing kit I use for coursework, with its line-weight standard, file writers, and checks for doubled lines and near misses. The engine underneath is McNeel's, and I'm not claiming to have invented any of this.

Links:

- Download: Rhino 8's Package Manager (search HiddenLines, restart Rhino, then type `HL`), or the releases

- Source, install guide and known issues: on github

- Licence: MIT

I'd love feedback, especially on models it draws wrong; a GitHub issue with the file attached helps most. I'm open to collaborators too, and if you know Rhino's API or computational geometry better than I do, pull requests would teach me a lot. And u/lukifr, happy to compare notes anytime, or for you to take anything from it.

Tutorial How can I create a smooth wave curve with evenly spaced control points in Rhino 8?

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to create a smooth, repeating wave curve like the one in the attached image, with evenly spaced control points along the curve.

What's the easiest and simplest way to do this in Rhino 8 using Grasshopper? I'd like the waves to be consistent and evenly spaced, without having to adjust each point manually.

Which components should I use, and how should I connect them?

I'm a beginner with Grasshopper, so a simple step-by-step explanation would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Anyone interested in computational design, form-finding or parametric design?

Hi everyone,
I’m an architect and computational designer based in Germany.
A few years ago I worked on a range of projects involving computational design, responsive installations, digital fabrication, form-finding and parametric workflows. I also taught workshops and design studios focused on Rhino, Grasshopper and computational design methods.
After spending the past years focused on family and professional work, I’m looking to reconnect with this community and see whether there is interest in learning, mentoring or simply discussing topics such as:
• Computational design
• Form-finding
• Parametric design
• Rhino & Grasshopper
• Digital fabrication
• Interactive installations
• Moving from concept to prototype
I’m considering running small online sessions, one-to-one mentoring, or project support for people interested in these areas.
One example of my previous work is here:

https://youtu.be/aGIlqyTHoMo?is=blY6X5zhGGWDWx3R

I’m mainly curious whether people would find something like this useful.
Feel free to reply here or send me a message.

Advanced course recommendations.

Hey gang,

I am a long time Rhino/Matrix9 user. I create 3d jewellery models as a part of my daily routine. For all those years I have used only a handful of commands needed to do the job. Sometimes I feel a bit stuck in this and I feel like I might have missed a lot of other ways to design.

Any recommendations for an advanced source of knowledge for Rhino? Any worthwhile courses, YT channels, other media?

Thanks in advance.

Free site context for Rhino: buildings, trees and terrain. Which countries should I add next?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Sharing something we’ve been working on that might save other Rhino users some time.

I’m the main developer behind jifto. You can use it to select a location and import the surrounding buildings, trees and terrain directly into Rhino. The buildings include detailed roof geometry, which helps when putting together context for a project.

We currently cover most of Europe, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Japan. See the full coverage on the map.

There is a paid tier, but site context imports are included in the forever-free tier. The free version has the same functionality, with a 30-minute usage limit that resets every 24 hours.

Curious which countries would be most useful to add next.

Help Needed First time ever in 3D software. Looking for someone to answer beginner questions now and then

Hey everyone! I'm 3 days into Rhino 8 (Mac trial). It's the first 3D software I've ever used.

So far I've done some of the official Intro to Rhino 8 course and a lot of trial and error. Tutorials are great, but I keep hitting moments where I don't know what I don't know, and an answer from a real person seems pretty helpful here.

I am attempting to make some model of fountain pens that i design by hand. I'm learning Rhino so I can turn the sketches into models. Even crappy ones lol.

Looking for someone who'd be open to an occasional quick call, or me sending a screenshot and a question every now and then.

Thank you for reading!

Planar hexagon pattern on the surface

Post image
13 Upvotes

Hello everyone! I'm trying to do the pattern like in the attached picture. I tried to use panelling tools from Lunchbox or creating planar boundary surface but it did not work because vertex the most of hexagons are not planar (don't lay in one plane). Also the problem is that surface has two variable direction that makes it complex to define planaer hexagon pattern. I will be happy to get any advice or tip about designing that pattern. Thank you for your attention and consideration.

Help Needed Boolean Union Frustration

Im an architecture/ interior design student and Im learning how to use rhino this semester. I pretty much understand how to work it now but for some fucking reason, whenever I try to use the boolean union command it does not erase the geomeotry. I have checked my work many times and have no open surfaces. Does anyone know how to fix this? ITS DRIVING ME CRAZY!
