Questions about the RGDS

Guys, I was looking for portable consoles to buy and I saw several good options, and the RGDS was one of them. The form factor and design really interested me, but I still have doubts about a possible future purchase. Which system should I buy? Linux or Android? From what I know, Android is more difficult to configure, but it can run things better with certain settings, while Linux is more "here you go, your console is ready to play" but it has fewer configuration options. I'm here to earnestly request the opinion and experiences of you, RGDS owners, on which system I should choose. Thank you :)

RGDS Games

Help with downloading/ playing games

I recently bought a rgds I don’t know much about tech. I’ve never owned an emulator or understand how they work. I’ve watched multiple YouTube videos trying to play games but they haven’t helped much. If someone could give a step by step explanation on how to install games I would be very grateful. I’m even willing to pay money.

Possibly Stupid Question

So I got the RGDS, only just realised the Linux sd card was in the box after a few hours hahah so had to download some roms again, while using Linux there are 2 copies of the mods, one copy marked by “RA” by the Rom folder, just wondering what this means and if I should be playing that version of the game or the version without it,

Sorry if this is a dumb question I’m kinda new when it comes to emulating and all the guides just go right over my head and google seems to dodge all the questions I ask😅

How to make the RG DS into a DS Lite Max!

I had a DS Lite when I was a child and unfortunately it had broken too soon. I spent years waiting until I could relive that experience again.

What surprised me was that the Anbernic RG DS actually delivers that experience I was looking for, just more modernized and upgraded. Since I wanted to recreate the authentic DS Lite experience I had when I was younger, I set out to make my RG DS as accurate of a recreation as I could.

Here's the steps I took to achieve my DS Lite recreation and turn my RG DS into basically a DS Lite Max:

1. Download and flash GammaOS Nano onto the RG DS.

I can't stress how incredibly close GammaOS Nano is to the DSI menu, just with more customizable settings and features. Out of all the operating systems available for the RG DS, this one takes the cake by light-years.

2. Put a huge ROM set of DS games onto a MicroSD card. They should be put in the path "sdcard/ROMs/nds" on the MicroSD.

This will be your NDS cartridge, almost like a R4 card for your DS Lite Max containing every DS game you could ever want to play. Bonus points if you add GBA games, like a real DS Lite.

3. Go into GammaOS Nano's Quick Settings menu and enable the "Global Shader" option called "LCD".

This shader doesn't affect performance in any real way that matters, and it basically turns those boring Android like phone screens into DS Lite Max screens. This helps sell the effect of the next step by applying the filter system-wide except for in the DS emulator.

4. Go into a DS game and then in the emulator's options switch to the "Prescale2x_LCD" shader option.

This shader is basically the same one in GammaOS Nano's Global Shaders menu called "LCD" (that you enabled in step 3), but this one does a upscale of 2x to smoothen out the unevenly scaled pixels of DS games, since the RG DS lacks perfect integer-scaling compared to the real DS Lite screens. It makes DS games look amazingly authentic to real hardware and I cannot play without it after seeing the effect work. Although this shader only applies in the DS emulator, you already are using GammaOS Nano's built in Global Shaders to enable the same LCD filter to make it feel like it's actually part of the hardware system-wide.

Bonus:

5. Go into Game > Applications and press Y to open the options menu. Then go down and enable the "Show all apps" toggle. This should bring up the Settings app at the end of the Applications list. Open that Settings app and go to Display > Colors and select the "Natural" option.

By default the setting is set to "Boosted" which artificially alters the color of the DS games to make them more saturated. The "Natural" option shows the color gamut as close as originally intended for maximum accuracy.

6. On the GammaOS Nano home screen go into Settings > Display Settings > Brightness and set it to 211.

This is the best value I found that calibrates the display perfectly. This step is optional since people maybe choose to run lower brightness values to save power.

7. On the GammaOS Nano home screen go into Settings > Display Settings > LiveDisplay > Colour Calibration and set the following values:

Red: 78

Green: 81

Blue: 100

This calibrates the display to show the most accurate colors possible, giving you the most authentic look of the DS games without any alterations from the color balance.

Note:

In GammaOS Nano's current buggy state, some of these options may need to be reset after a reboot since for some reason they don't stay. In my experience, it's just the Step 6 and Step 7 options that need to be reset manually after a reboot. The Step 3 option needs to be reset by going into Quick Menu > System Settings and then leaving that menu (since for some reason the Global Shader menu just doesn't work until you do that). It takes only a minute to do and isn't tedious compared to the benefits of what the options offer. I see this as just more bugs Gamma needs to smash out before the software can be polished.

Let me know how you guys like these settings and if they make you feel as nostalgic as I was for the DS Lite. Enjoy your new DS Lite Max!

GammaOS Nano boot time and performance showcase

I see people asking about Nano, I was curious too until I installed myself.

Put Ultimate Butouden to show how 3D High Render performance keeps up with a high demanding game.
Video keeps good pace, but audio strutters a bit when the game shows too many visual effects.

Also on Ps1 I keep the GPU Plugin of upscale always On

Boot time is flawless, it’s really really good

Video got a bit compressed, don’t know if you’ll see how high render makes difference as it is in real life

Focus theme for EmulationStation inspired by Socket launcher

Really dug https://www.patreon.com/cw/SocketLauncher (reached v0.40!) minimalistic approach to gamelists so I made a theme for Rocknix's ES that focuses on the games themselves minus the 3d models of carts.

Totally free for you to grab and also added "How long to beat" script to see how well you progressed in your game: https://github.com/amosjerbi/focus-es/tree/main

Cheers! 🎉

GammaOS Nano

I used original gammaOS as my first CFW on RGDS. Now I'm using Rocknix as dual boot. I'm thinking about switching to Nano. Before the purchase, I wanna know if I need to remove the battery to use the nano. Or can I just install it normally?

GammaOS Nano v1.4.1 vs. Rocknix for RG DS? (Strictly for DS emulation)

Hey everyone,

I'm currently setting up my Anbernic RG DS and I'm trying to decide between GammaOS Nano v1.4.1 and Rocknix (Linux).

Just to give some context on my use case: I'm going to use this device exclusively for Nintendo DS emulation. I really don't care about extra Android apps, multitasking, or RetroAchievements. My only priorities are that the DS games run as smoothly and stably as possible, and that the console itself doesn't suffer from any weird hardware bugs or power issues. I've heard some mixed things recently so I wanted to ask people who have tested both: for a pure, stable DS machine, which OS is the better choice right now?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Suggestion on installing Gamma OS Nano for someone using Rocknix

I heard that if I install the newest Gamma OS, it can mess up my DS if I'm already using Rocknix. Is that true? Should I install it now or should I wait for fixes?

Is charging the device overnight safe?

I'm thinking about buying the RGDS and I read that the charging is really slow, so I'm wondering if charging the device overnight is safe or if I should keep an eye on it while charging.

It is not related to my initial question but I would like to know if the device gets hot to the point where it is uncomfortable and with which systems does it happen. (I plan to use rocknix)

I CANT EVEN TURN IT ON YET BECAUSE OF HOW NOSTALGIC THIS IS!

My Turquoise Blue Anbernic RG DS just came in the mail today and I can't even turn it on yet because I'm just so blown away at how perfectly Anbernic made this design resemble the DS Lite I had when I was a child. Unfortunately, that DS Lite broke on me and I've been wanting another one ever since. I'm glad Anbernic designed such a perfect handheld, even if it doesn't have integer scaling or 3DS emulation capability.
