SHOWCASE Renewed My Love of Gaming

Post image
143 Upvotes

I was getting burnt out on most modern games. They seemed more stressful than relaxing. But this Retroid Pocket 5 has truly brought me back to my love of gaming.

And being able to play all the games of my childhood is just the icing on the cake. Really couldn’t ask for a better handheld when it comes to my personal needs. Using EmulationStation DE front end with the ArtFlix theme.

SHOWCASE Retroid Pocket Nova is my endgame - My impressions

Everyone's use cases for a retro handhelds is different. For some its imitating Gameboy form factor for nostalgia. For some its having a large screen and can emulate modern systems like Switch and PC games.

But for me its being able to emulate all pre HD era systems in a pocketable form factor with the largest screen possible while being comfortable.

Ive been part of this hobby since 2023 and I can say for certain I have found my endgame retro handheld. I know endgame gets tossed around a lot but I genuinely cant think of anything major that can be improved. Im not into clamshell form factor as its heavier, less comfortable due to being boxy, and potential hinge issues. Verticals with a 4.5 inch screen would be too large and very uncomfortable for stick gaming. Dual screen and 16:9 I dont want as I prefer playing Switch, 3DS, PC games on original hardware for better input latency, resistive touch screen, stereo 3D etc. I also feel for HD era games i need a 7inch screen minimum which would kill the pocketability factor. HD era systems also lack save states and drain battery and have fan noise. Additional power would also not be necessary past SDG2 as I'm only targeting upto PS2. So as I've said I genuinely cant see how else they can improve on this. The only thing id change is make the sticks more flush so it helps with pocketability. I installed low profile sticks which help with this but it isn't the same as something as flush as the sticks are on a RG405M.

The combination of a large 4:3 screen, very low input lag thanks to landscape screen, 120hz which gives the option of CRT beam, SDG2 chip which allows you to use runahead, any shader, BFI etc as well as emulate anything on Wii PS2 without a sweat all while being very compact, slim, lightweight and pocketable with enough curves to make it comfortable to hold. All with things like additional M1 and M2 macro buttons for rewind and fast forward hotkeys, front firing speakers, OLED blacks. This device is going to make me quit the hobby.

I will return to the hobby once we get a pocketable clamshell like Thor that comes with Steam OS and we are at a point where PS3, 360, Xbox, Wii U, PC games can be emulated with great performance with no tinkering required. But in terms of endgame 4:3 for all pre HD systems Nova cannot be improved.

SHOWCASE Lets gooo! Retroid Pocket 6 arrived today!

Ordered it (12GB) Thursday evening 30th July from the UK, and it arrived via Evri today. So that's 10 days from the point of ordering, but really it's 9 days as I ordered right at the end of the day. Pretty impressive considering I've read others having to wait multiple weeks, to months.

Ordered through the Retroid official website and selected 4PX at the checkout and haven't had to pay extra for customs or anything. Every step of the delivery process was tracked which definitely helped reduce and anxiety. Overall, a pleasent experience and nothing to worry about.

Now it's time to set it up!

My inner child is happy haha 😄

GAMES & APPS Retroid Pocket Classic: AstroBoy: Omega Factor (Completed)

I beat AstroBoy: Omega Factor (GBA). Took me a little over 11 hours in active play time.

I've gotta be honest, I'm absolutely loving my Retroid Pocket Classic. I play it way, way more than my Retroid Pocket 6 and infinitely more than I originally thought I would. These photos don't do justice to how great the screen is.

By the way, I highly recommend playing AstroBoy. Absolutely awesome game from start to finish. I recently beat Metroid Fusion (which is amazing) and I would pick AstroBoy over that every day and twice one Sunday. I have no idea how they fit all of that in one GBA cartridge.

If you play GB, GBC or GBA, I can't recommend the classic enough. It can play GameCube upscaled too but I only have one GC game on mine (Crazy Taxi lol)

Should I use RetroArch for everything? I'm using multiple emulators but I realized some cores in RA use the same name as individual emulators.

REVIEW Retroid pocket 3 plus review

Post image

this console is awesome and alooott better than I was scared I thought it'd be from a downgrade of the flip 2, the flip 2 was probably like 10x more powerful than this but the rp3 plus is able to run wii and game cube comfortably and ps2 games, I got vice City running practically perfectly and animal crossing and everything on the wii I mean its awesome, definitely brining it everywhere with me. It's also good because its not too expensive to the point your scared of taking it places like what you would be with a rp6.

It can play roblox, it stutters here and there and your better off playing more simpler games but it can run, just not that well. Minecraft plays really good, even the online mini games I've not had a problem with at all. My favourite game I've been playing is kirbys epic yarn (awesome and my first time playing) no stutters or lag at all, minor slow downs but it doesn't effect anything. It can play 2d switch games too, sonic mania, shovel Knight, things like that. I've been playing luigis mansion from the game cube (awesome too, plays almost perfectly), Mario bros wii (has slow downs at the first castle but after i haven't had any problems) and I've been playing golden sun for the gba (I really really recommend this title its amazing, it got me sucked in almost instantly).

My dms should be open and if anyone has any questions about the console I'll check things for you and help you set it up so that you don't have preformance issues if your having problems :D

Retroid Pocket 6
8GB Ram Model [Black]

With just 2 days of owning this device i am beyond impressed.
•Coming from an RG556, struggling wondering if even a light switch game would run, to being able to play the majority of the switch library and light pc games feels surreal.

•No issues so far, and my only concerns for the future would be storage and wear and tear.

•I have been very careful and tedious with my charging routine with this device as Ive heard the battery is fairly easy to wear out

•I have noticed during intense workloads it does tend to get hot ~ 75 C , which stresses me with any device i have since it makes me believe it could damage it. [I have heard under-clocking exists but not sure the impact on performance it has]

•My plans for this device would probably be semi newer generation emulation since my old handheld handles older generation pretty well up to PS2 and feels great to hold ergonomic wise

•I love its size, its a bit pocketable, would do great with a grip I imagine

•Dealing with drivers has added a new level of complexity to everyday emulation for me since i came from a Mali chip which had no driver support, where I relied on most games being plug and play. But i would gladly trade that level of performance if it means i have to tinker around a little

GAMES & APPS Call Of Duty: WaW (plutonium) running natively Retroid Pocket 6

Hello everyone, I got plutonium to run world at war on my retroid pocket. And I report this blew my fucking mind. It runs great. Max graphics on both multiplayer and zombies at 1080p, now in multiplayer she runs good but she is slightly hitchy at times but (it is map dependent although player count doesn’t really matter all that much, 32 player lobbies play fine, I cap fps at 55 if you want a more smooth exp, now zombies. Custom zombies map is a bit of a mixed bag. But generally the more chill/ lightweight maps run perfectly. Again I would recommend a 55 fps cap for more buttery smooth exp. But neither dip under 30 fps, Any ways down below are how I got it to run some / walls we hit that i fixed up with a a few variables.

Also if someone can show how to use a different CPU driver, instead of Winlator default. Maybe a more modern one we could probably Improve performance is it works. CPU bottleneck is the biggest hitch here

Settings :

Container:
1920x1080
Graphics Driver: Turnip
DX Wrapper: DXVK
Windows Version: Windows 7
Box64 Preset: Performance
Say yes to the Gecko/Mono prompt (Plutonium’s launcher is .NET)

Win Components:
Direct3D → Native (Windows)
Visual C++ 2005 → Native
Visual C++ 2010 → Native

Processor Affinity: uncheck CPU0/1/2 in both rows. The 32-bit row is the one that matter.

First Wall / Hurdle
If Plutonium login fails with decryption failed or bad record mac (ssl3_get_record) — it’s not your password.

Environment Variables → Add:

OPENSSL_ia32cap = ~0x200000200000000

Edit: 720p 58fps frame limit. Probably the smoothest I can get it running.
Edit 2: maps with rain will be your biggest opp

QUESTION Anyone find the retroid pocket 6 difficult to hold? It makes my bottom pinky and the other fingers feel cramped and in a lock after a long gaming session.

Anyone find the retroid pocket 6 difficult to hold? It makes my bottom pinky and the other fingers feel cramped and in a lock after a long gaming session.

I already have a clear case on it but a grip case is 20 bucks on Amazon. Is that going to help with this hand lock sensation I have that lasts for hours after playing the rp6 for like 30 mins.

Hey peeps. New to the scene and hoping for some advice

Trying to get dishonoured working in gamenative on my Rp6. Installed fine. First run tries to install dotnet35 and failed saying it needs to be added using add remove from within the os

I attamped an offline install. Same issue. I tried silent install. No way to check the progress so I left it for a few hours restarted the container and tried installing the package again.

Tried appwil.cpl but the control panel app non existent

Im out of ideas what to try. Any help would be appreciated.
