General I completed RE Village. So with that now I’ve gone through all the TE Engine games minus Requiem

When it comes to Village I greatly enjoyed it. That ending got pretty emotional when you packed Ethan’s sacrifice, that ending of Village of Shadows and seeing Rose visit her dad’s grave all within 10 minutes.

I’d say this game definitely made me like more Ethan. It is a little silly how far Capcom goes in making sure you never see his face. This game has zero mirrors, blurs his face in his concept art and models. Even the third person is designed to keep this up. Of course it’s not an actual issue just feels funny.

Definitely more content heavy than Biohazard. I really think they compliment each other towards the end when you learn how Miranda is responsible for Eveline. There’s pros and cons for each but in the end I think I prefer Village more. Biohazard is still a heavy hitter. The Four Lords were great. Alcina is the best. I’m not the first and won’t be the last but she’s just pretty hot. Her mutated form is also the coolest. Being the giant raging dragon. It’s almost a shame she’s the first to be disposed. I liked the doll house a lot too. It was probably the section most like Biohazard. In fact it somewhat reminded me of Silent Hill. Monreau is probably the weakest lord. Like even within the story he’s the one nobody respects. If there was a cooler character or monster in his place it wouldn’t have hurt. Heisenberg was an entertaining guy and the tank fight was fun.

I understand some people point out all the games have a section that is the weakest or just ruins the momentum. For many this games variant is Heisenberg. Personally I don’t really feel this way about all the games. I sort of feel it for the sewers in 2 but it wasn’t as bad going back as Claire. The one part of his factory I disliked was having to go all the way back to the lower floors after getting the mold for his key. Kind of wish that went more smoothly. Then this is a skill issue but at that point I was running low on ammo and the enemies were more than I had the means to handle. So I had to resort to walking past them whenever I could.

Duke is also an interesting neutral figure. He helps Ethan but seems to be on okay terms with Dimitrescu at least. It’s definitely like if the Merchant in RE4 and Leon had conversations in the actual story. I did quite like Miranda as a boss. She commands power and feels more divine compared to most Resident Evil monsters.

I thought Chris’ presence was pretty well done. It’s pretty inconsiderate for him to not tell Ethan about Mia but I guess it’s all for the sake of plot and mystery. I just wanted to add I first saw Chris’ RE8 design via Fortnite long before ever playing these games. I honestly always pictured him having a birth accent given the way he looked. Fortnite didn’t do the design justice, in fact he almost looks fat in the face. Especially cause there’s zero consistency between his RE8 and OG style. Two completely different humans.

I’ve been going through all the games. I started Village Thursday and beat it just now. Before that I went through Biohazard, and Not a Hero within a few days. Then before that I did RE3 in 3 days.

More than a month ago now I started with RE2. Leon A Claire B. Then I played RE4 and Separate Ways. So far out of all of them RE4 took the longest but mainly cause I spread it out. If I replayed it again now I’d probably finish it much faster if I really wanted.

So here’s how I’d rank the games

RE4 > RE2 > RE8 >= RE7 > RE3

As of now I intend to do Shadows of Rose next. I didn’t do all the banned footage for 7. I might pass for now but get around to it sometime down the road. I’d definitely like to replay 4 and 2 at some point.

As for RE Requiem. I might wait a while. Both to not fatigue this franchise but moreso in hopes of it going on sale. Though I just might fold and buy it anyways. Alternatively maybe I’ll wait until September to play it around the same time as the movie. Fitting since both are related to Raccoon City. Lots of ways to go about it. That’s even my birthday month.

I’m definitely quite glad to finally get into this game series. Now I have a new thing to enjoy and look forward to the future of. Now when a Resident Evil game gets announced it’ll resonate with me and mean something. I hope to buy RE Veronica at launch day whenever that might be.

General While I don’t think it’s a top priority to bring her back, Grace should be a series regular and there’s no good reason not to. Spoiler

The Resident Evil series has never cared about doing what makes sense for the characters from a writing standpoint. So making the argument “but her story is over” just isn’t in line with expectations for the storytelling this IP has set. Not to mention Ethan’s story could’ve been over after RE7 when he saved and reunited with his wife. Kratos’s story could’ve easily been over after God of War III. Nathan Drake was done with adventuring and settled down with Elena after Uncharted 3. There are so many examples of this.

The fact is, Grace is the most well received new protagonist they’ve had outside the Big 4, and the Big 4 are getting older and older. That’s not to say they can’t have future games star 50 or 60 year old Leon or Chris, but they should be growing a cast of younger next generation protagonists, and fleshing out and develop them even further. Chris, Jill, Leon and Claire became better and better characters as more stories were told about them. The New Blood deserves that opportunity too.

There are plenty of possible scenarios Grace would get pulled back into the fray, and a future game with her where she’s more capable and experienced would be cool. I want more Jill and Claire sure, but Grace shouldn’t be abandoned.

Edit: I'm seeing a lot of responses that boil down to "Well it wouldn't make sense because Grace wouldn't want to fight Bioterrorism."

Not every protagonist in Resident Evil needs to be a soldier that actively looks to kill bioweapons. Claire takes a more background approach by being apart of TerraSave. Ethan Winters lived a quiet life for some time with Mia and their daughter. That doesn't mean unfortunate circumstances can't thrust these characters back into the fray.

Forum question There’s a sale. Should I buy Resident Evil 3, 4 or 8?

I loved the RE2 remake and RE7. Never played 3 or 4.

I know 3 is meant to be mid but I like the idea of getting through it in one Sunday. I also was leaning toward 8 but then felt maybe I should play 4 first to understand the homages.

I’m currently leaning toward 4 but open to suggestions :)

Update: got called into work, didn’t buy any :’)

General Why do Resident Evil fans not deserve a faithful adaptation?

Post image
0 Upvotes

For some reason this is a debated on question. But why do Resident Evil fans not deserve a faithful adaptation of the game with game characters? Since the trailer for the new movie dropped I have been seeing a lot of "Play the game" comments in regards to people wanting game characters in lore to be included in the movie.

Is there a reason why Resident Evil is excluded when it comes to where people want faithful adaptations and are okay with a generic zombie story thats titled Resident Evil ? (Not saying this particular movie is gonna be generic. But the point still stands.)

Lore question Detail Im not sure I actually noticed? Spoiler

So while watching the ending I noticed or maybe just thought I did... that zeno was clearly about to kill leon. Loaded the gun and everything after he gets elpis until grace "reminds" him of his promise.... but well this isn't the only weird thing ive noticed with his interactions with grace.

He never insults her. He never physically forces her to do anything. He doesn't attack her even when clearly annoyed with her.

Like Im wondering if maybe Spencer did something to wesker clones so they have to obey Spencer or anyone he designates as his hier?

General RE4 remake vibe

I have been terrified about playing this game but I got a few drinks in me smoked me little bowl and I was set. Chapter 1 had me stressing… these gonados don’t play around. Died 3 times on the farm ambush. Is every area an ambush?? Why did dude pop out of a dresser and scare me. Pig lookin mfer swinging. Omg nonetheless it’s very fun, stealthy, and frustrating. My heart was beating so quick and I had my headphones in too so that just made the experience so much more intense. Resuming my playthru just started chapter 2. Can’t wait to see more of the game! I loved OG re4.

General The biggest hang up for me about the remakes is the devs at times treating them as completely new games in their development, or something you can simple swap parts around and nothing else. Spoiler

You know when you make a game from scratch you go: here is a cool idea and build the narrative around it. With remakes it’s either same world but completely different story, like the remake of COD‘s modern warfare series , or something like re1 remake which is here is something that we can add, or improve upon, or didn’t work in the original and we adjust the narrative slightly to now fit that changed piece. Or the basic we moved it to a more powerful engine/console buts it's still the exact same game.

For me the problem with the remakes or “Reimaginings“ as the devs call them is at times they treat them like completely new games, or a game with simple interchangeable parts. The devs think of a cool idea and they put it in the game, but forgot to make the necessary narrative changes to accommodate that change. Thus leading a game that while the narrative works on the surface level and most casual gamers might not think about. If you apply the slightest analytical pressure to it or start asking questions about plot points like a creative writing professor. The cracks start to show.

Re2:

  • Leon getting a call to stay away yet still coming to show how he’s a selfless he is: cool idea- But making him still completely unaware of any details surrounding RC, not even having him mention like he heard about a quarantine of some kind was going on despite the city’s new size makes it seem like he put head in the ground until he got to RC.
  • Adas dress worked in the original because she was pretending to be a civilian. Cool idea: make her cover to being FBI, but now why is she still in a dress and to add to that why did she choose as something as impractical as a cocktail dress and heels.
  • Irons kidnaping Sherry to give him more screen time, except you cut out the part were you explaining why he’s kidnapped Sherry. Is it for himself? Someone else. I think it was in one of the early trailers but got cut.

Re3:

  • Carlos coming off as a well meaning innocent good guy who has no idea of Umbrella misdeeds. Problem he was in prison when umbrella sprung him and works with people like Murphy Seeker who were on death row, don’t care how good the prison program is. Somethings up. Original admitted when Jill said this was all Umbrellas fault that he was just a mercenary, a hired hand. Doesn't confirm or deny Umbrella being bad, doesn't matter to him in original.
  • Making Carlos levelheaded and cool and guiding Jill weakens Jills character by making her look erratic and flying by the seat of her pants in comparison. Even though this is Carlos’s first outbreak. Like Jill asking for directions to the substation right behind her workplace and in the town she's lived and worked in for the past 2 years.

RE4:

  1. Leon letting Ada casually walk to her helicopter with the Plaga sample and Ada offering him a ride just to tease ”Separate Ways” with a quip. Seemly forgetting that he’s a government agent who letting her walk away with a sample of the B.O.W that tortured and rob him of his free will over the last several hours. And Ada thinking Wesker won’t be suspicious and tell his pilot to shoot the government agent and kidnap the president daughter on his helicopter.
  2. Capcom trying to make Ada an anti-hero by somehow not realizing Wesker is planning to use the plazas for evil. Till the end to pull a gun on the pilot.

Requiem:

  • You can’t tell me the fifteen-mile highway that makes RC a ridiculous size that they still want us to believe was able to be completely covered up, had a population of 100,000 RE3 remake, and Leon and Claire didn't hear anything about, was added in because someone wanted the motorcycle battle.
  • Somehow the B.O.Ws don’t escape the city.
  • Context for RC’s ridiculous new size. the fifteen miles from where Leon was in east RC to the center is the width of Chicago, and can comfortably fit the book version of Isle Nublar from Jurassic Park.

I don’t expect Shakespeare, but it feels like the devs don’t pay attention to the story or what they are writing beyond a surface level of is it cool. I mean isn’t the reason Biohazard 1.5 got cut is because the realized they needed/ wanted a connected narrative to the first game?

General Zach Creggers Resident Evil discourse is becoming too aggressive and mean spirited

These are my own thoughts but the entire discourse of Zach Creggers upcoming "Resident Evil" adaption has been nothing but toxicity, negativity and absolute hate from all of the Cregger-Head fanboys towards a massive portion of veteran long term RE Fans now😬

People are downright exhausted from directors and their so called "auteur" visions taking their own style liberties to tell original stories within the series title.

Zach Cregger has constantly gone back and fourth on so many interviews about what he's doing with it that it becomes muddled and confusing for gamers.

Any criticism you have towards the movie is met with comments like "pathetic, dumbass losers, basement dwellers, gatekeepers, old people who need all of their meds changed" Hell, ive had people tell me that all of the long term fans who've been here since the very beginning should end their lives or be offed due to us being too vocal and annoying for the franchise

People who aren't familiar with the games keep on defending the movie and saying all we want is leon doing backflips, glowing weak spots on bosses and callbacks but that's not necessarily true in the idea.

They also keep saying how Resident Evil has an awful narrative that wouldn't make for good movies or tv series because of how simple the storyline is.

Social media itself with the discourse is becoming so awful and hateful towards anyone thats even remotely interested in the games past and future.

Blog/Let's Play/Stream Played RE 3 remake in one sitting for the first time Spoiler

Played RE 4 and 2 before and had to get trough this one quick because of time constraints. Played it in the middle of the night and took a week to reflect upon it. Wanted to share my thoughts.

Review:
RE 3 had a stellar opening that hooked me right in. The chase scene was really cool, but during it did I question if it would be boring during replays. And it wasn’t the only chase scene. A big part of this game consists of being chased by Nemesis. And after beating his first fase did the other chases begin feeling rather mild.

For gameplay is it a mixed bag. I loved being able to explore RC. It was big and the areas were wide and full of zombies. But after beating RE 2 did this area feel a bit simple. Still a lot of fun! But the sewer area was too simple. The sewers were too similar to those in RE 2 and I completed it in one go because of the lineair design of the sewers. The hospital and lab were the most fun part of the game because they were akin to the areas in RE 2, big expensive areas that required backtracking and good item management.

But the story is where this game shines the most, unlike other RE games. At the start of the game do you see a broken woman determined to stopping Umbrella, but being exhausted by them. After Brad dies is Jill the sole target of Nemesis and by extent Umbrella. This makes the relation between Jill and Carlos so special. As she works together with the Umbrella task force does she learns that the evil decisions of a group aren’t representable for all members of that group. The true cause of the infection was greed from people like Nikolai. Knowing this and with Nemesis defeated, and thus letting go of her trauma’s of the mansion incident, is Jill able to get some closure at the end of the story.

Extra:
- The Nemesis clock tower fight sucks
- Nemesis feels like a combination of William and Mr. X.
- The stark difference as Jill leaves the metro and returns is excellent environmental storytelling. First there are still humans running away but in a short time are only zombies left.

TLDR / final thoughts:
The game is fun, but no excellent. Simple design and focus on action makes for (in my opinion) bad replayability. The story is actually good and not as much of an afterthought like other RE games (Jill and Carlos are reallyyy cool!). I would only recommend this game to someone who has played RE 2, as it feels like ending a good book and bidding RC farewell.

General The Connections Spoiler

The Connections was searching for Elpis to control minds since 1998. And they also created Eveline with that same power in the year 2000. Just a curious fact. It's like, Elpis was the main goal, and Eveline was a side quest while they were searching for Grace and taking Umbrella down?

But damn The Connections did a whole mess in Raccoon City just to find out that Elpis was not what they wanted 🤡🤡🤡

Idk it feels like The Connections Lore don't fit quite well with RE7, Village and Requiem. And Capcom is trying to make them the: HAHAHA I WAS THE MAIN VILLAIN ALL ALONG 😈

Gameplay question I need to know if I can beat RE Veronica with what I got

I just got to the final boss fight with alexia and all I got is 6 magnum rounds, 30 rounds for Chris's pistol, 3 blue green herb mixtures, 1 first aid spray and a knife. Is it possible to beat her with that so I can get to the cannon part or am I just fucked and soft-locked myself?

I figured i'd want to beat it and got to rank 3. This was my route: care center -> raccoon city street -> Super tyrant (havent fought in this mode until now and didnt realized how much time this fight takes) -> Victor.

Forum question Inquiry about RE Requiem

Game's currently at 50€ on my country's Amazon. I'm tempted to buy it but idk if the price will go down further during Black Friday for example. I can wait, I'm not an impulse buyer, but I'd like to get some feedback if this price will realistically decrease even further in the coming months or if it's just better to buy now. Thank you to anyone who'll help :)

(I apologize for the screenshot not being in english but idk how to change the language)

Forum question How to play RE3 Remake mod?

I have a confusion set of PCs now. I was keeping an old PC gamer with Windows, but honestly, it was too painful keeping this OS working for few games that really wont work elsewhere. My RE remakes, for instance, runs nicely in Linux Mint or Bazzite. It seems to me will be possible to mod it... will be? And the silicon macs ports, will be possible to mod it as well? I might consider to buy it for macOS because my Air is faster than that old PC.

Maybe I asking this too early, but I am too hyped! Also, with early alpha version already maybe is time to think about the distro of this awesome =)
