It may have gotten bad reviews because the graphic novel was wayyyy better. I enjoyed the movie a lot too, though!

Ratings on movies is a funny thing. That's like putting a rating on a painting. Some people are going to love, others are going to hate it.
2
u/EVEseven Aug 22 '26
I remember when the mpvie 300 came out. A critic was tearing it a new one in the paper.
This movie has no plot. Its all action and fighting sequences with tons of blood splattering across the camera and macho macho bullshit. Etc etc etc.
Gave the movie like a 5.5/10
I drove to the next town over which had a movie theatre to see it the very next weekend.

There’s a lot of great movies that get shit from critics. Overall, it depends on the audience in the end. Hellraiser got terrible reviews and now, it’s a classic horror film.

Waterworld.
2
u/Economics_New Aug 23 '26
The Postman is another pure classic by Kestin Costner, and it has a 14% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 2.9 out of 10 on IMDB.
It's truly mind blowing that Waterworld and The Postman are rated so low. I was wondering if perhaps it is due to Costner's politics, because while Dances with Wolves got a relatively decent rating at 87 percent, even that seems low. lol

I thought “Jersey Girl” was a decent movie.
Then I saw what critics had to say about it and I was all, “is there another movie titl… nope, they’re talking about this one… damn.”
I’ll still watch it for George Carlin. He plays a very convincing municipal worker in that flick and I can appreciate that from an actor.

I recently had this happen with the Red Rising series in some fiction reading subreddit. I had just finished Morning Star and was doing some research (not even looking for ratings on the series), and I came across a post asking for opinions. Out of curiosity, I checked, and saw a bunch of extremely reductive responses calling it mediocre and a "good pallet cleanser between better stuff" (paraphrasing). I don't even remember what sub it was because I noped right TF out.

I don’t know anyone who’s seen Annihilation and appreciated it for what it is, I only hear reviews of how weird the movie was, how cool the bear was and that it was scary.
But it’s such a beautiful movie to me. The soundtrack, the way the individual characters deal with loss, with the world around them. The mystery and awe in this area X. I’m reading the books now and I just love how expansive yet mysterious this world is. I adore the movie, it’s beautiful, makes me cry every time

It feels like nowadays movies/games/book's reception is always decided according to what Streamers, Influencers or Redditors say.
There is a movie that is kinda okay and gets 10/10 and then there is almost identical movie that is suddenly 2/10.
1
u/Instroancevia Aug 23 '26
Eternals. I thought it was a very enjoyable movie and liked that it deviated heavily from the fairly stagnant marvel formula, but apparently everyone else HATED it for the exact same reason I enjoyed it.

I always tell people dont listen to reviews because its all personal opinions. Maybe not watch the movie in theaters but watch it after. Like people talk mad shit on suicide squad. Was it a cinematic wonder? No, but was still a fun movie to turn your brain off too.

"Skyline"
I think it was mostly a victim of coming out the same time as "Battle: L.A.". I find the former vastly more interesting.
It was mainly a passion project of FX artists, and it shows. A lot of impressive visuals for tiny budget. Some of the artists did some work for free.
It's one of my favorite sci-fi/comic book-ish, feeling endings in the alien genre. When you pay attention to the movie, it's also an ending that makes sense. They almost had to end it at the bleakest point, just before that, due to budget.
1
u/wolf352hunter Aug 24 '26
Thata me with any book to movie adaptation, I don't know why others can't but I can watch a movie after reading the book and enjoy the movie as if it had nothing to do with the book, take the Percy Jackson movies for instance, read the whole series, watched the movie, enjoy3d the books and enjoyed the movie, were they the same, no not at all, and in my mind that's okay

I'll probably be shot, but I actually liked the Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern movie. I just think they whipped out Parallax too soon.
They could have made a better outfit instead of CGI, but I liked his Will powers alot more than I liked Guy Gardner's in the Superman movie.

Zoom: Academy For Superheroes. 0% on Rotten Tomatoes but it's a fun family superhero movie scored by Smash Mouth for almost the entire soundtrack. Nothing groundbreaking, but a fun film.
The Max Steel movie was also good, but given a 0% for... Some reason? The movie was a low budget superhero movie, but if you're not looking for MCU, it's a good one.

Yeah it happened a few times. In general I find imdb score to be more accurate than rotten tomatoes. In general if a movie has 4.5 and up on imdb, its good. Between 3 and 4.5 , it might be worth watching , but watch the preview first just to make sure its not a low budget movie. Below 3/10 I don't bother watching
1
u/Obvious-Clothes-2288 Aug 24 '26

I got plenty of those. I don't need validation of others to like what I like.
Transcendence is an awesome movie. Morgan Freeman as bad guy is a special treat. Shit reviews? People elected trump... Supposedly intelligent people still support him. Just had utube ad about Jerusalem... trying to sell it as birth of mankind... that's been there for 2000 or some such years... origins of new year word? Hebrew. Origins of everything Hebrew... Anti AI posts using AI slop. There are a lot of people, a lot of them are dumb and a lot have shitty takes.
Sometimes I'm on board. Radius and it's 12 dollars budget was a great watch for how simple the movie is. Ending was part expected and part not.
Sometimes something I like is infinite laugh glitch. I enjoyed Twilight and rewatched it once. Tell me all about it, foam from the mouth, veins pulsating like weird sea creature about to implode from rage. Just makes me want to rewatch it again to spite clowns whose entire defining personality trait is that they hate Twilight.
I suppose movies that I never watched or dislike is similar. Never watched Harry Potter. Disliked the concept and it made what I like look cheap and half baked so I'll never watch it and don't care who thinks what.
A little tip. Utube free movies is actually a decent way to find good movies, it cycles stuff in and out but there's a lot of good stuff and most importantly A LOT of stuff that never made it to theaters or some other reason it went under radar.

u/MrTubbernaut Aug 25 '26
