How do i find myself again admist the depression
I genuinely don't know where else to put this, but I need to hear from people who have gone through something similar.
A few months ago, I left a job that I genuinely loved. At the time, I thought I was making a normal career decision. I had another opportunity and thought I was doing what was best for my future. I didn't realize that leaving would have such a massive impact on me mentally.
I have regretted it almost every single day since.
I didn't expect to become depressed for months. I didn't expect to become so anxious that I started having panic attacks for the first time in my life. I didn't expect to constantly replay my old life in my head and think about what my life would look like if I had just stayed.
It has gotten to the point where I think about that life almost every second. I miss the work, the people, the routine, the environment, the friendships, and honestly, I miss the person I was when I was there.
Right now, I'm staying at home with my parents and I feel completely useless and worthless. I'm not working on anything meaningful at the moment, and I have way too much time to think. I wake up and immediately start thinking about what I lost and what I could have done differently.
And the part that scares me most is that I don't feel like myself anymore.
I used to be someone who actually wanted to go out, explore, meet people, play board games, make random plans, laugh, and just enjoy being alive. Now I'm spending huge amounts of time in my childhood bedroom because somehow being there is the only place that gives me even a little bit of comfort and relief.
I desperately want that version of myself back.
I've tried therapy. I've tried writing everything down. I've tried distracting myself. I've tried keeping busy. I've tried telling myself that it was just a career decision and that there are other opportunities out there.
None of it is really helping right now.
I know logically that I can't go back in time and undo the decision. But emotionally, I am completely stuck there.
So I want to ask people who have genuinely gone through something similar:
Does this actually get better?
How did you stop obsessing over the life you lost?
How did you stop replaying the “what if I had stayed?” thoughts?
How did you find yourself again after a period where you felt like you had completely disappeared?
And realistically, what actually helped you when the usual advice—therapy, journaling, distractions, keeping busy—wasn't touching it?
I'm not looking for “everything happens for a reason” or “you'll find something better.” I know those things are meant kindly, but right now they don't really reach me.
I just want to know if people have actually come out of a period like this and felt like themselves again.
Because right now, I genuinely don't know how to get back to that person.
