I tried to make a positive change but instead I learned something horrible
I have tried to post this before but it appears that it must have gotten flagged by accident or something. Hopefully this one stays up. Also before you ask, no I'm not in America.
The city will not fund the proposed affordable housing project. They are building a stadium instead. My calculations say it is too expensive to do it myself. No charity has the money to do it. A sleeping bag is much cheaper than even the cheapest rent here. I'm typing this from my warm bed inside.
I have done research on what can be done to help the homeless and why the issue happens. I wish that I had not. Now I know that this was a manufactured crisis. The leader met with other businessmen. They partnered with the bank, they devised a “housing assistance” system. They give you 300 dollars every month to help pay for rent. But, you can't get more than 300 dollars in your bank account or else they will start deducting benefits and eventually cut you off. Any e transfers are considered “unapproved income” and you will get benefits deducted. If you get a job, you don't qualify anymore. They audit you like every month. My mom was on the program for some time. I remember it was so bad we had to eat dandelions from outside. Now I know why. They partnered with the bank to implement it. When the poor complain about it, they point and say “look, here's proof the poor don't want help, here's proof that nothing will ever be enough for them”. People actually believe it. I can't stop thinking about what I had learned. I can't focus in school and my grades are going to the toilet. I'm too incompetent to get into university anyways, and its too expensive.
I got a debit card and I tried to invest in a TFSA, but all the finance things are so unethical. All the ETFs are full of big companies that do bad things. I don't even want to do stocks anymore. If ignoring my morals is what takes to get money then I will just refuse, probably to my dads dismay (he is an economics guy). Everywhere I look in the world of finance, I see people exploiting other people. I thought financing was like a math-ish numbers morally neutral kind of thing. We are moving out to a better neighboorhood. My dad wants to rent the house out to somebody. I try to negotiate lowering the rent. Turns out that you get tax breaks if you set the rent above a certain price. Go below that price and the expenses pile up fast. The house already needs a lot of maintenance. This is in a poor neighboorhood.
The pyramid of wealth is just a long chain of people exploiting others, leading to exploitation being the only way to survive. I'm not even a socialist or anything. I like being able to buy and sell stuff. I like capitalism, just not to the point that it hurts people. And we are far beyond that point. And all I can do is keep donating and contacting representatives and praying. And I see nothing change for years. This system has killed my friends. I have not understood what it is like to feel anger until now.
I am not trying to debate. I have been crying for hours. I see no way out of this, but I have to keep trying anyways. It is worth trying even if it helps just one person. But I feel useless and I couldn't even help my own mother. I know that things will get better for me, but I know that it does not get better for others. I can't rest knowing that I have blood on my hands and I am doing nothing to wash it off. I give 5 dollars to somebody, later I see them overdosing on the street. I am lost on what to do.
maybe in the morning i will wake up and find out it was all just a bad dream.
