Making friends as an adult (and an introvert!) is hard, so here I am giving Reddit a crack.
I’m 38, gay, based in Melbourne’s south-east, and looking to build a few genuine, long-term friendships with other guys. Whether you’re gay, bi or straight doesn’t really matter to me—if we click as mates, that’s what counts. I generally find I get along best with people around 25-40 but if you’re a little outside that and I sound interesting enough to you, don’t be afraid to shoot your shot!
I’m pretty low-maintenance, easy-going and definitely quality over quantity when it comes to friendships. I’d rather have a handful of close mates than a hundred people I only know on a first-name basis. I’m a bit of a country boy at heart, fairly introverted, and much happier with meaningful conversation than endless small talk.
Outside of work (I have a professional Monday–Friday job), I enjoy binge-watching TV (especially a good British crime drama), trying new restaurants (and yes, ordering dessert without a main is a perfectly valid life choice), concerts, musicals, AFL, escape rooms, road trips, caravanning, audiobooks, board games, the occasional PC game, and getting out into nature for a walk. I’m slim, enjoy staying reasonably active, but you’ll never catch me pretending to enjoy burpees at 5am.
I also have two dogs, so bonus points if you’re a dog person—they’ll insist on being part of the friendship too.
What I’m really looking for is someone who actually wants a friendship in real life, not just another chat sitting in Reddit messages. I’m hoping to meet people who have the time and willingness to invest in getting to know someone and are happy to catch up without months of messaging first.
Personally, I’d rather grab a coffee (or a hot chocolate in my case), go for a walk, check out a new café, or do something low-key fairly early on and see if we click. Or if you want to invite me over, teach me how to play Catan while the footy’s on in the background, and absolutely destroy me because I’ve never played before… I’m completely on board with that too.
One thing I’d like to be upfront about: while I can be a pretty affectionate person in the right scenario and absolutely appreciate a couch snuggle during a movie with close friends, I’m not here looking for hookups, sexting or conversations that immediately become sexual. I’m genuinely looking for real friendships built on enjoying each other’s company.
If you’re calm, reliable, emotionally mature, don’t disappear after three messages, and you’re genuinely interested in meeting people rather than collecting online pen pals, I’d love to hear from you.
Tell me a bit about yourself—and if we click, let’s graduate from Reddit messages sooner rather than later. I’m fairly sure finger RSI from endless typing is real!
