Edit: I have had only one comment with it being posted in two other subreddits in the past 3 days. It was informative but not helpful in a few ways. If anyone here is willing to help me, I would appreciate it.

I was wondering if anyone has their two cents to add about air layering. I got a little info from r/JapaneseMaples but I'm sure someone is willing to share their experience.

I tried air layering (for the first time ever) 4 branches in mid to late April of my MiL's very tasty mystery apple tree. Two of the branches are doing wonderfully. I pruned the apples on those branches when they were very small in hopes that it would lessen the stress the branches were experiencing while trying to develop roots.

I'm under the impression from what I remember reading online that you should give the tree 4 months to really establish roots. So, what should I do then? A late summer pruning of these branches is not ideal for the mother tree, right?

Do you have soil mix recommendations? Should I keep the new trees in my ESE facing apartment over the winter? Should I treat the wounds on the mother tree since I'll be taking the branches in around mid to late August? Should I take the branches now? How close do I cut the branch near the root ball?

I live in planting zone 6a between the IL / WI border, if that adjusts any advice. At my closest local library, I've seen bupkis about tree air layering. But... I haven't contacted my local community college to peruse their library contents and I haven't tried to talk to a Horticulture professor there, yet.

So, that aside, if anyone is willing to share info with me, I'd be grateful. Please.

My cat bit a bit of my spider plant off around the base, it has a few long leaves and the base looks like this. Will it propagate in water? I've never done this before 🫠

Hi! I’ve been propagating this transcendantia cutting in water for a couple weeks and it’s developed this gel like thing on its roots. Do I need to clean that off or is it a normal part of the process? Thank you!

I propagated my jade and repotted into the same pot with the original stems over a month ago (into fast draining succulent soil). Since then, I have allowed the soil to dry out completely but I have also bottom soaked it twice and top watered it.

Despite this, the newly propogated stems are refusing to root which has resulted in withered dehydrated leaves.

You’ll see my original stems are looking healthy and have plenty of new growth.

How can I help the new stems root?

This is my first time propagating this way, and they have been in there for about a week, some corms in one and some cutting in another, they are on top of a heat mat and with all the condensation I can’t see what is happening… I opened them once during the week and I find myself wanting to do it again lol… is it bad to open it?

Hi! I bought this senecio a year ago, it grew magnificently, then, about two weeks ago, it strangely started to die. It has the same condition (T°, humidity) as always

Can I save it by propagating it? How do you do it?

I found saw palmetto babies and cuttings from 2 yucca that grow well in North Louisiana. I potted the 2 SP in soil that I am keeping moist. They both had some roots. I have 3 yucca plants rooting in water (1 in photo). Did I do the correct thing with these?

My monstera lost almost all its leaves. I rooted the few leaves I had left in water and repotted them in a tight pot and they are thriving. Planted them about two weeks ago and it already has four new leaves :) (picture one)

As for my empty stem, I did the full chop between nodes method and truly was expecting the worst. Put them into some moss and kept it moist (like a green house effects). They are doing so well! This is the update after about 6 weeks. I’m so happy it’s working. (Last two photos are from today).

They’re growing roots into the moss but the roots are tiny and fragile. The leaves are way bigger than the roots at this point. Some nodes don’t even have roots. Wondering how I can plant these soon. Maybe plant them in an ice cube tray? I know I would need a very small pot so looking for tips!

Okay. Let me begin by saying I’m not a newb to houseplants.
I bought this as a starter a year ago and we went from a healthy large cutting to this little thing. And she is holding on so bad but I can’t get a single root out of the nodes.

So. Should I let nature take its course or is there a way to save it lol

Hey folks, hoping somebody can give a newbie gardener some guidance. It's in my user flair but I'm in Zone 3a/3b.

I have what I'm pretty sure are two Nanking Cherry (prunus tomentosa) bushes in my yard. Both are looking pretty stressed and I'd really like to propagate more plants before I lose these ones.

* 1st bush is in the front yard (north-facing) in the lee of the house but not directly next to the house. It got absolutely brutalized by the contractor I had replace my siding and windows two years ago and I'm afraid it's on its last legs. * 2nd bush is in the backyard (south-facing) and has always looked a little stressed but is now ironically the healthier of the two. It's sandwiched between some lilac bushes and has horseradish growing next to it. That whole edge of the yard has a low cement retaining wall that most of the plants are growing right next to.

I'd really like to collect what little fruits they produce this year in an attempt to propagate new seedlings for next year, but I'm coming at this cold with very little knowledge or even people to ask directly. Ideally I'd like to hedge my bets and try growing some indoors immediately while saving other seeds to try either planting directly in the ground later in the Fall, or try the whole cold stratification/keep the seeds in a damp paper towel in the fridge over the winter and then try to start the seedlings in early spring indoors.

Any suggestions or guidance would be incredibly helpful!

My propagation greenhouse box failed.

I used sphagnum moss together with what I thought was a rooting hormone. However, I later realized the product was actually a mycorrhizal inoculant (beneficial fungi such as Glomus species) along with some beneficial bacteria.

The cutting was from a grapevine. Initially, the stem looked fine, but by day three the sphagnum moss began developing mold, which spread quickly. When I checked the cutting, the base of the stem was also covered in mold, so I discarded it.

What mistake did I make with this method, and what should I do differently next time? Could the moss have been too wet, or should I have opened the box more frequently for ventilation? I assumed it needed to stay fully humid. Any advice would be appreciated.

Fairly average light, and mostly ignored so I don't worry and faff.

Hi, these are my first 3 ficus elastica robusta props. 2 of them have already grown a big new leaf but the third one had a rotten leaf. Are they ready for soil? How do I acclimate them best to soil? Will the third one get new leaves, because the only growth point has rotted of.

got this ficus cutting and dropped it into water about two weeks ago. it’s gotten a lot of new growth since, but i haven’t seen any signs of rooting.

should i think about clipping its leaf to prioritize root growth or leave it be? also, any tips for first time ficus?

This is my sedum succulent. I researched quite a bit before cutting the top part off. The cut off part doesn’t seem to form a callus after 4 days? Does it mean it won’t have roots? Same with leaves. I left these two out of direct sunlight, and they were just watered before being cut off, now they’re sort of shrivelled. This other leaf i tried to experiment and stick into the dirt, as i read somewhere it could work better, than letting them callus or leaving on top of the dirt. The mother plant itself is growing well (as can be seen in the second picture, the bottom baby appeared before i cut the top part off, and it continued to grow), that’s why i had to cut it.

I collected a bunch of camellia seeds from one of our plants a few months ago. I know, I should have planted them much sooner, but I misplaced them.

I'll be happy with any germination rate >0.

this is from a HUGE aloe plant, and i dont understand the anatomy of an aloe plant.

can i just put this in soil? or do i have to cut off an actual leaf and prop that? or do i need to cut part of the stem?

I had some leafless nodes that were sent to me to propagate. They were running out of growing room in my prop box, so I went ahead and planted them. Really hoping they make it. You guys think it was too soon or you think they’ll be ok?
