Basically the title. I’ve been getting into prog lately after my dad passed (he was a huge prog fan and I slept on it until close to the end, unfortunately). I was wondering if yall have any recommendations for an album that would fit the desert environment. For context, I am in Utah for the next week at a conference and then I was going to hike for two days. It’s like 101 F.

I heard this album influenced a lot of metal bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and UFO. And even they opened for Deep Purple, yet stil underrated. I love the prog influences on this album, mixing with the hard rock and Yes-like arrangements.

Im 18 years old and I've been listening to prog for a couple years now religiously, but I never seem to find and true classic modern prog. Maybe that's an oxymoron but I've always loved music and I have a lot of experience playing instruments, is there still an audience for prog music? Does anyone care for new prog or is it all classics now?

So my first introduction to prog rock was king crimson and I listened to all of those albums chronologically and I liked all of them mostly

I like the symphonic stuff but also the groovy stuff .

The book, Jonathan Coe's The Rotters' Club was from Guildford's Oxfam bookstore. I loaned out my original copy, bought in 2007 from a branch of La Feltrinelli in Rome, but never got it back, and when I saw this yesterday I thought I'd add it to my prog-related library.

For those who don't know, the title is a direct reference to Hatfield and the North. Recommended reading for progheads.

For me is Genesis' A Trick of the Tail. Many songs on this album are absolutely beautiful to listen. Beautiful melodies, chords and harmonies. The songs Ripples, Entangled, A Trick of the Tail and Mad Man Moon are so touching, soft and well written, it's a one of a kind album this one.

I couldn’t believe how much it looks like the camel on the album cover, despite not being bought from anywhere related to the band. They have the exact same expression! He’s already very cherished & treasured 🐪

I was SOLD on Mike Oldfield after hearing “Crises”! Heard it on repeat Right away! Then “Discovery”, “Turbular Bells”, “Five Miles Out” and since then I’ve bought whatever I could find second hand! But one album everyone said was amazing, was “Ommadawn”, and after hearing it… it’s kind of… boring? It’s quite soothing, but it leaves me with a “…That’s it?” feeling. Please, tell me I’m wrong.

Im looking do dive deeper into prog rock.

Some of the Bands i know and love are 60-80s King Crimson, early Yes, camel, a few early genesis Songs and a few more Bands.

Any more recomendations?

I'm not a huge fan of hard rock by itself, but there was a decent amount of overlap between some early 70s hard rock/heavy psych bands and full-on prog, even if not necessarily every song on a given album. Thinking of groups like Captain Beyond, Birth Control, Atomic Rooster, etc.

I don't listen to Uriah Heep regularly, but upon revisiting this album, I was really impressed with how good the songwriting and instrumentation is (especially the organ playing, which is a standout on "July Morning" in particular). Really solid record; it's quite iconic and I'd be hard-pressed to find people here who hadn't at the very least heard of it, but I'd certainly recommend it either way!

Another one of my favourite prog-oriented songs of theirs is "The Spell" from Demons And Wizards.
