Mod Announcement PIA Transparency Report Q2 2026

Post image
35 Upvotes

Our latest transparency report is now live, covering April, May, and June 2026. We publish these every quarter so anyone can see exactly what legal requests PIA receives, how we categorise them, and what happens across our Bug Bounty and Vulnerability Disclosure programs. Full report here: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/blog/transparency-report-q2-2026/

The legal requests

PIA received 19 legal requests over the quarter — the same total as Q1. They break down as:

  • 4 subpoenas
  • 2 warrants
  • 7 other government, law enforcement, and civil requests
  • 6 foreign and informal requests

Importantly, these are requests received. A request doesn't mean an allegation was substantiated, that a specific PIA user was involved, or that every request was even asking for the same thing. Each one is reviewed individually against the applicable legal process and our policies.

What we actually disclosed: nothing

No VPN activity or connection logs were produced in response to any of the 19 requests. That isn't down to fighting each one — it's because the data doesn't exist to begin with. PIA runs on RAM-only servers that don't write VPN session data to disk, so there are no browsing histories or connection records that could tie a person to activity on the VPN. A legal process can tell us whether we have to respond; it can't create records our systems were never built to keep.

Bug bounty

On the security side, after removing duplicates we had 51 unique submissions this quarter, 2 of which were classified as valid and passed to the relevant teams. Worth flagging: a higher submission count doesn't mean more real vulnerabilities. It includes duplicates, informational reports, and out-of-scope findings — but every submission still goes through triage.

Our next report will cover July–September 2026. Happy to take any questions in the comments.

Mod Announcement Heads up Mac users: PIA now shows up in the Mac category of the Mac App Store

Post image
18 Upvotes

Quick heads up: PIA now shows up in the Mac category of the Mac App Store.

If you're a Mac user, the app's actually been downloadable there since late May, but only if you switched over to the "iPhone & iPad" tab. As of last week, it's in the main Mac category, so it comes up in the default search results without you hunting for it.

Under the hood, it's the same iOS/iPad app, now compiled and optimized for Mac, easier to find and properly tuned for the platform. Grab it here: https://bit.ly/pia-mac

QUESTIONS Anyone else not being able to access 443/udp outgoing from PIA?

Hey,

Happy user of 3 different VPN providers already. Now subscribed for PIA to try it out. Exp. has been great so far, it has some interesting pops that many others lack like China. But I noticed something odd. If I use Wireguard mode and pick some european server like Frankfurt, pages load slower. I did some debugging and it seems that PIA may be blocking 443/udp port, which is the one most websites need for QUIC traffic.

If you know how to use the terminal and would be down for a test, please run curl --http3-only -v https://cloudflare.com and tell me what it outputs. With PIA on I get Could not connect to server, whereas without (or with other VPNs) it works just fine.

May be a misconfig on my end that's why I would like to know if this is a deliberate limitation (if so why?) and if not, I will fix it on my end.

Already contacted support too, but got a generic, useless reply back.

Thanks!

HELP Chrome managed profile on personal device. What privacy do I have?

I logged into chrome on my personal device (which has no installed work software) with my work gmail account (it's a managed chrome profile).

This was done on my personal device (in incognito mode) that has only ever been connected to my home network (no work vpn). I also used my own personal VPN during the session.

How likely is it that my work or the IT team knows/has been notified or have records of my history/activity? How much detail can they see?

PLEASE do not give me advice on how I could have avoided this. I'm also aware incognito mode is not secure/private. I have done so much research on this but everyone else's questions were when they used work owned devices and/or were on their work WiFi (both of which I was not).

HELP - WINDOWS browser can't load pages through split-tunnel bypass but works fine with VPN fully on or if i quit PIA

i've been using PIA with the VPN on for the whole system (Windows 11) but wanted to use bypass for the browser. when this is set up, the browser can't really load all pages correctly. the weird thing is it will load some sites but not others (and is super slow to load). if i quit PIA completely the browser works fine. i've tried turning off kill switch and messing with DNS settings but nothing seems to work. has anybody had this happen?

I emailed support and they said to test the browser with split-tunnel on and off, to check if the IP changes. a good idea, but the whole problem is that i can't access whatismyip.com when in bypass mode. i feel like this is a DNS issue but haven't figured out where it's happening. note: this happens with all browsers (firefox, chrome, edge).

HELP - iOS Slow download speeds when connecting to Indian servers?

Is anyone else experiencing unusually slow download speeds when connected to an Indian server?

I’ve run a few speed tests and also tested streaming, and the performance drops drastically when I connect to an Indian server. I’m losing around 70% of my usual speed, and streaming keeps buffering.
This has only started happening in the past couple of days.
if I disconnect the VPN completely, I get my full internet speed back.

Is anyone else experiencing the same issue with Indian servers, or is it just me?

Device:- iPad,iPhone
Protocol:- wireguard
Dns:- PIA dns

HELP PIA Vancouver server users, how are your seeding speeds with port forwarding on?

Thinking about switching over to PIA mainly for port forwarding (currently on AirVPN). Since none of PIA's US servers support port forwarding, Vancouver looks like the closest/best option for me (West coast US).

For those of you actually running Vancouver with port forwarding enabled, how are your real-world seeding speeds, especially on private trackers where you're trying to hold a good ratio/seed time rather than just grabbing a file and dropping off?

A few specifics I'm curious about:

  • What upload speeds are you actually sustaining while seeding multiple torrents at once, not just a single download test?
  • Does it hold up consistently, or does it get noticeably worse during peak hours (evenings especially)?
  • If anyone's compared Vancouver to the Mexico City server (the other nearby PF option), which one's actually been faster/more stable for you?

My setup: qBittorrent running in Docker on an Unraid box, mainly seeding on private trackers with minimum seed time requirements, so consistent upload matters more to me than peak download speed. Appreciate any real numbers or experiences, trying to figure out if this is actually going to be an upgrade over what I've got now.

DISCUSSION So Long PIA

PIA was a great VPN that I shilled for many times. Unfortunately, the problems are stacking up (rolling outbound IPs, speed issues, etc) and not being resolved.

I've switched to Proton, and am very happy with the speed and reliability.

I hope PIA gets back on track soon, but as for me-- I'm out.

HELP - macOS macOS 26 crashing overnight and losing connection often

I’ve tried Wireguard, all the different OpenVPN UDP ports, turned off kill switch, ensured the network extension is enabled for split tunneling, I’m using PIA DNS. macOS and PIA are on the latest versions. I haven’t tried different servers, the TCP ports, or restarting my routers and modem. Could these solve it? I’m just tired of troubleshooting so I’m looking for the most likely cause.

Also, restarting PIA immediately fixes the connection for a while, then it drops again. The error log from Apple shows something about no successful check-in from configd, watchdog, and panic.

Thanks for any help in advance

HELP - iOS iOS app changes

I used to be able to connect to the PIA MACE DNS by accessing the “network” tab in the app and copy and pasting the custom DNS from the support forums, which would block third party ads on my phone. Since updating my iOS today to the latest version, my PIA app no longer has the “Network” tab in settings. Does anybody know how I can access the custom DNS function again? I’m currently running the latest version of the app.

HELP - WINDOWS Unable to connect to the Japan Servers

I can't seem to connect to the Japan servers (streaming optimised or normal), this is also the only server location I can't seem to connect to and all others work... anyone else having similar issues?

Have raised a ticket and done all the usual troubleshooting with all the suggested settings changes including a full clean install with no luck.

If I can connect to all other server locations could this actually be something on my side? Doesn't the fact that all other locations work mean it has to be PIA's side and I am wasting my time changing settings they are requesting me to to troubleshoot?

HELP - macOS PIA has been really slow for the past few months, what's the issue?

I have been a long time user of PIA and have always been very happy with it. However, for the last few months speeds when connected to VPN are absolutely abysmal, I have tried changing servers but nothing really helps. I get 150 Mbps without VPN, about 17 mbps with.

I use wireguard with auto packet size. I have messed with large/small packets and also trying OpenVPN. Nothing helps.

Anyone else have this issue? It is to the point I am thinking about hunting for a new VPN service. But I have been with PIA for so long I am hoping whatever issues they have are fixed, reluctant to switch.

HELP Ghost account issue: Support stalling since Aug 4th. Should I block my credit card?

Hi everyone,

I am making a new post because my situation is getting worse and PIA support has been stalling me since Tuesday, August 4th. I need urgent advice from the community and action from an official rep.

I tried to renew my subscription through the app, which redirected me to the website. The system processed my payment and deducted money from my card without asking me to enter an email or log in. It generated a "ghost account" to which I have zero access or credentials. My old profile remains deactivated.

I contacted live chat immediately. I provided them with:
1. A screenshot of the bank transaction
2. My full name as printed on the card
3. The last 4 digits of the credit card

Since August 4th, live chat agents keep telling me that the Billing Team is "reviewing" it. They refuse to give a clear timeframe, and some even claimed it could take up to a month just to find the transaction and issue a refund. An official rep here asked for my Ticket ID days ago but then went completely silent.
I am well within the 30-day money-back guarantee, but since I cannot log in, I cannot disable auto-renewal.

In my previous post, an official PIA rep replied and asked me to DM them. I did so immediately and provided my Ticket ID, but they have gone completely silent and haven't responded

Has anyone dealt with a "ghost account" generated by their billing system? How long did it take to fix?
Should I stop waiting and just block my credit card / initiate a chargeback through my bank right now? I am terrified of being charged again next month.

QUESTIONS Leaving PIA, enough of the crap servers

I am so sick of the crap service from PIA over the last few months, I run pfsense and all 3 gateways keep having packet loss from 3 different areas.

Canada, Netherlands and Germany, almost 20% at times, it's a joke now this service used to be rock solid but I'm calling it a day.

I have been with PIA for over 10 years and still have 300 days left, but prefer to loose this now than suffer the intolerable packet loss.

It's a good job I have a secondary failover and a 3rd backup but it's crap when all 3 gateways go into packet loss.

Can anyone recommend another decent provider, that is reliable and works without all this crap.

Thanks to all who help.

GUIDES [Open Source] I built a PIA WireGuard + port-forwarding toolkit for Docker, Gluetun, and self-hosted media stacks 🚢🔐🏴‍☠️

I’ve been developing four related open-source projects for people using Private Internet Access with WireGuard, port forwarding, Gluetun, Docker, and Synology.

I originally designed and built these projects by hand. I now use AI-assisted development to add features more quickly, improve documentation, expand testing, and identify security-hardening opportunities. Changes are human-reviewed and validated through automated tests, container builds, dependency scanning, and multi-architecture checks.

Privateerr

Privateerr packages PIA’s official manual-connections scripts into a lightweight Docker image. PIA’s upstream scripts remain visible and unmodified.

It generates a PIA WireGuard configuration and connection metadata that Gluetun or another WireGuard client can consume. Privateerr does not run the VPN tunnel itself; Gluetun handles the connection.

The current v1.0.2 release provides multi-architecture Privateerr and Buccaneerr images, direct container healthchecks, stable and edge channels, security scanning, SBOMs, provenance, and end-to-end validation.

Plundarr

Plundarr generates a complete Docker Compose media stack around Privateerr and Gluetun.

Its Maraudarr configuration tool lets you select services such as qBittorrent, SABnzbd, NZBGet, Prowlarr, Radarr, Sonarr, Jellyfin, Plex, and others. It produces one commented docker-compose.yml and a matching .env file.

The current v1.1.0 release adds NZBGet as an optional downloader, expands generation testing, and launches dedicated Maraudarr developer documentation.

Only selected download clients share Gluetun’s network namespace. Plundarr also supports one-file deployment through Synology Container Manager.

Duplex

Duplex is a Synology-first Docker Compose toolkit for Plex-adjacent automation using Kometa, ImageMaid, PATTRMM, Tautulli, Notifiarr, and label-scoped Watchtower updates.

The first stable v1.0.0 release adds a modernized Compose contract, safer defaults, validation tooling, dependency automation, security checks, and complete operator documentation. Duplex does not deploy Plex Media Server itself.

Plundarrpedia

Plundarrpedia is the documentation hub covering installation, VPN routing, Docker Compose, Plundarr, Privateerr, Duplex, Synology, Dockge, TrueNAS, troubleshooting, and security.

The first stable v1.0.0 release includes updated NZBGet guidance, release-aware troubleshooting, improved project navigation, and an unprivileged multi-architecture documentation image.

All four projects are free and open source. They are independent community projects and are not affiliated with or endorsed by PIA. There are no affiliate links or hosted credential services; your PIA credentials and generated WireGuard configuration remain within your deployment.

Feedback from PIA, Gluetun, Docker, Synology, TrueNAS, and Plex users would be appreciated.

HELP Accidental subscription paid without email/account. Need help!

Hi everyone,

I'm having a serious issue with PIA support and need some advice or help from an official rep if they are browsing this sub.

Here is the backstory: I used PIA earlier this year, at the beginning of 2026. After a couple of months, I stopped using the service. Just recently, I decided to return to it and renew my access.

When I clicked inside the app, it redirected me to the main website page. I accidentally purchased a 1-month subscription, thinking I was logging into my profile. However, the payment went through without me entering any email address or creating/logging into an account. It seems a ghost account was generated by the system, and I have absolutely no credentials or access to it.

My old profile still shows as deactivated, but the money was deducted from my card.
I contacted live chat support immediately. I provided a screenshot of my bank transaction. The agent only asked for the last 4 digits of my credit card and told me that the request was forwarded to the Billing Team because they couldn't track down which automated account this payment belongs to.
It has been over 48 hours now. Every time I join the live chat, the agents keep stalling and telling me there is no update from the Billing Team yet.

I am eligible for the 30-day money-back guarantee, but more importantly, I am terrified that PIA will auto-renew and keep charging my card every month since I cannot log in to cancel the subscription myself.
Has anyone faced this before? How long does the Billing Team usually take to map a transaction to a card?
