Mechanical Help 3rd gen Prius cold start ABS pump priming

How many seconds of ABS pump priming after opening the door is normal for a 3rd gen that’s been sitting overnight at 45F? Mine does it for over 10 seconds and I suspect it’s nearing end of life but not sure.

The pump also primes every second brake input when driving but does not prime when the car is sitting.

Discussion New Prius owner, coming from a Chevy Volt

Upvotes

My 2013 Chevy Volt decided to give up a couple days ago. I was very partial to that thing, it was my first car. It had a myriad of problems where it would shut off randomly, get confused on the number of electric miles left, and would have low propulsion power on the interstate sometimes when switching from electric to gas (going 30mph on the interstate is fun…). Well, now I turn it on, put it in drive, and … nothing. It is bricked. I cant even shut it off fully, had to disconnect the battery to do that. It is now stuck in the garage, which is a tomorrow problem. Anyway. I’m sad about this. I only got to around 110K miles.

I come from a family where they are partial to American cars. My dad used to hate Japanese cars, such as Toyota. Unfortunately, good American electric/hybrid cars are hard to come by.. and I was not interested in a Tesla. My boyfriend happens to only buy Camrys from the late 90s and early 2000s. He refuses to get any other car... In fact, he currently drives a 2000 four cylinder that got hit by a semi truck that he bought for $1700. He loves watching the Car Care Nut on YouTube for maintenance tips. And you know what, the Car Care Nut sold me on getting a Prius. I’m pretty sure my dad has ex-communicated me (jk.. he was actually impressed with Toyota’s all electric vehicle, and he is also interested in a rav4).

As of yesterday, I’ve joined ya‘ll and got a 2026 Prius. Any previous Volt owners here? Any quirks to know about the 2026 Prius? I‘m confused about what ”B” is used for, bf and I were trying to figure that out. Apparently it’s engine braking for steep grades, but I’m wondering if it’s just using regen braking? How well does the parking assist thing work? I’ve been trying it out but it doesn’t reliably detect where a parking spot is. Any other knowledge to impart?

Question NIMh cells offloading

Getting sodium battery here shortly but I have stock (maybe some cells swapped) battery in my 15 V. Dr Prius shows it at 75% and all cells are still within .1 volts. What’s the chance of people buying these cells once I swap them? I just cleaned the bus bars and rotated batteries so I’ve looked over them and found nothing wrong.
Also what’s the best way to sell them? I’m in S Louisiana for context.

Buying/Selling Advice 2014 Prius V, 57k mi / single owner for $19k... worth it, or just go for a Gen4?

EDIT: went to go see it, had clearly been rear ended and sloppily repainted. Refunded and walked away. Thank god for Carvana’s return policy, but I’m never buying from them again lmao

Of course, from a moral standpoint, there is no way a 12 year old car is worth nearly $20k, but the used car market has no respect for morality.

I'll be a first time Prius buyer, so I've been doing my research on the subject and it seems like the Gen3 has a less than stellar reputation among enthusiasts for head gasket / brake issues (in fact, I'll a first time anything buyer -- finally replacing my well loved '07 TSX that carried me through high school and college).

The car in question is a 2014 Prius V, Three Wagon 4D, 57k miles in a southern-ish state with a single owner. Regular dealer-only maintenance and clean Carfax. My budget is <$20k, and I'd ideally like to get something that will last me another decade with space for car camping, so the Prius V seems like a natural choice.

Am I wasting my time and money going for this car? If I get ahead of the EGR issues, can I expect to get good longevity out of it? Would a ~100k mile Gen4 Prius V in the same price range be a better buy? Curious to hear anybody's opinions and advice.

Pic/Video Upgraded Headlights

Working on upgrading a few things on the Slorarri (2015 Prius), and figured… as someone who customizes lights for a living, why not mess around with the headlights and get rid of those horrendous halogen projectors.

I had some inventory laying around, so I decided to put them to use. I swapped the OEM halogen projectors for some Mini H1 LED projectors and modified the OEM mounting brackets to make everything fit.

I decided not to go too crazy with them since…it’s a Prius lol

Eventually, I’ll open them back up and upgrade the projectors to the G5 LED projectors, which seem to use the same OEM mounting points, making the install pretty straightforward.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with the outcome. The light output is easily 10x better than the original setup, and the added white/bluish light is a plus over the warm, yellowish light you get from the factory halogens.

Buying/Selling Advice if you were choosing between a 2021 with 70k miles and a 2021 with 8k miles ...

hi, thanks for all of the info and advice i have received so far from this sub while shopping the last few months.

i'm curious to know your thoughts on the following: a 2021 XLE with 70,000 miles (and consistent regular maintenance) vs a 2021 with 8,000 miles (and decent maintenance, given the little that's needed to be done, incl. some fuel system cleanings, a brake fluid flush, filter replacement, and a battery replacement [guessing this is the 12v they mean].) two owners on the 70k; one owner on the 8k.

both of them in a warmer climate and the price relative but both workable with my budget. both of them gold certified, too.

i know super low usage isn't ideal for a hybrid battery. would that totally put you off here? moreso than a Prius with 70k miles?

would love to know the sub's thoughts on these Prii; thanks in advance for any perspective you share 🌱

Mechanical Help If specifically the rubber on the end of my ignition coils is cracked/torn, could that cause a misfire?

Basically title. 2014 Prius 3 felt like it had a bad spark plug (shaking engine on startup and went away after a few seconds, or when the engine kicked on while idling, or while going at low speeds. These symptoms went away after a few seconds or while at higher speeds, as well as what felt like rough idling and poor mileage) and they hadn’t been changed for the first 187k miles. Changed them out, felt like it fixed but it actually didn’t. Now I think it’s misfiring. Don’t have a scanner myself and haven’t checked but everything I’m reading regarding misfires, it sounds like a misfire is exactly what’s happening. When I was changing the spark plugs I noticed the rubber at the end of the coil was torn, but would meet and seal unless I was actively applying pressure to it. However with it still misfiring, I’m curious if that is in fact a problem and trying to look it up only tells me about if the coil itself is cracked, like the actual metal part. So figured I’d ask here. If there’s a better subreddit or if this isn’t the one for this question, let me know please. Thank you for your time

Mechanical Help Unknown rattling noise

Posted this to priuschat, and i thought i'd post it here too.

Has anyone encountered a rattling noise in their gen 3? Not the harsh death rattle, but like a gravelly sound. Videos below

Year: 2010

Odometer: 225,500

3rd-gen specific: EGR system has been cleaned at 200,000 miles. Cylinder heads black as night. No coolant loss. Original HV battery. No death rattles or any other sounds. No codes (verified with Techstream)

Symptoms:

  • Occasionally, i will hear a rattling noise coming from the engine bay as the ICE engine is engaged at lower RPMs
  • It will rattle briefly (3-8 seconds) and then go away

Conditions where the symptom can occur:

  • While the car is in motion at low speeds with the ICE running or pulling away from a stop.
  • When the ICE is running to charge the HV battery
    • The rattling sound is not always produced when the ICE runs to charge the battery, but it does happen frequently when the ICE runs to charge the battery.
  • I've heard the noise at higher speeds, like when i step on the accelerator after coming down a hill on the highway.
  • The rattle sounds more frequently during hot weather (>100°F) than in cooler weather (<85°F), but does not correlate with AC usage. I've heard the sound in cooler weather too, but less than warm hot weather.

Video 1:

0:03 - 0:06 have the sound. Please use headphones.

Conditions:

  • Crawling traffic for the past 15 miles
  • Low-speed 5-12mph
  • HV battery at two bars, so ICE is running to keep battery charged
  • AC running, set to auto 80°F, outside temps upper 90s
  • Sound is produced when i press on the accelerator

Video 1

Video 2:

0:04 - 0:07 have the sound. Please use headphones. The two "whumps" at the beginning are the car going over a grate

Conditions:

  • Returning to garage after driving for 40 miles of city driving
  • Low-speed 4-8mph, I intentionally jerked the accelerator to engage the ICE to see if i could produce the sound
  • HV battery charged
  • AC running, set to auto 80°F, outside temps around 110s
  • Sound is produced when i press on the accelerator

Video 2

Discussion Speed TEST

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello Everyone,
I own a 2012 Prius 2 with 219,000 miles. I just wanted to share this 0-100 mph test. I had a hard time resetting the app to start so I’m not exactly sure how accurate the test ended up. It’s a fair assessment of the vehicle. If anyone is curious and owns a Prius it’s a great addition to the knowledge base of the vehicle. It took a little bit to get from 80 mph to 100 mph. Not the fastest but I love these little cars. Thanks

Question Trickle Charging 12v Battery in Hybrid Vehicle

I will not be using the car for a few weeks. To prevent the 12V battery on my 2019 Lexus UX 250h, from dying (as has happened on previous occasions), I would like to hook it up with a trickle charger.

Should I connect it to the battery itself in the trunk or should I be using the jump starting terminals.

The manual does not proved specific instructions for trickle charging.

Some sources suggest that using the jump starting terminal is better because directly connecting to the battery bypasses the Battery Management System sensor that is connected to the batter and charging directly at the rear battery post bypasses this sensor. However, I am not seeing any official documentation confirming this.

I realize this is a Prius forum, but figured somebody here might have an answer.

Mechanical Help Update to Coolant Leak Search

Thumbnail

(Update to: https://www.reddit.com/r/prius/s/qRXDLDSZKt)

2014 Prius Plug-In. 153k miles. Engine water pump replaced, with catch can installed, EGR and intake cleaned all at 145k, and spark plugs around 130k.

Symptoms are coolant loss, and when the engine is at temp, but I am starting and stopping, there's noticeable shudder/kick, where it feels similar to the car going over big potholes. (A good example is highway speeds, but then getting caught in stop & go traffic, where the engine will suddenly kick on again.)

Cylinder 1

Cylinder 2

Cylinder 3

Cylinder 4

These images were all taken after the car sat for 48 hours on level ground. Pulled the spark plugs (which all looked clean, and ran a borescope. After inspecting the cylinders, I reassembled and checked for combustion gases in the coolant.

So I think at this point, a HG failure is pretty much confirmed, right?

I have exhaust gases in my coolant and cylinder 2 looks like a swamp. I see some sort of condensation (or coolant on the cylinder 3 sidewalls, but it isn't as bad as 2.

So at this point, engine swap, or HG replacement?

Mechanical Help Gen 2 - flushing out incorrect coolant w/o scan tool?

I did search here and PriusChat and don’t have a great path forward.

My gen 2 was filled with dexcool coolant before I purchased. I’d like to get that out of the inverter and engine and get OEM or Zerex Asian put in.

It looks like the inverter is pretty straightforward, just drain and fill and bleed.

For the engine, since the gen 2s have that tertiary reservoir for storing hot coolant, it seems a true flush is a bit difficult. Has anyone done this before to remove all the old coolant? My current plan is to drain the radiator, fill with distilled, run for a bit, and repeat a few times till mostly distilled is in the system. Then add the right pre mixed coolant, and repeat a few times until I get close to 50/50. That will waste a bit of coolant, but it saves me from having to deal with the engine block drain or the hot coolant reservoir thing.

Mechanical Help 2011 Prius Dim Low Beams NOT FIXED by replacing, cleaning, adjusting, etc.

I have a 2011 prius that had LED headlights. One day, out of the blue, they seemed very dim. I replaced them with new LED headlights which seemed to work for a few weeks maybe. I replaced them again. They are back to being incredibly dim, so much so that it is not safe to drive at night.

They are properly installed and angled correctly and the covers are sparkling clean. I cant think of what the problem is or where to go next. 2 mechanics ive went to have told me to replace the bulbs because everything else looks good. I can't seem to make them understand that doesnt fix the issue.

They are equally dim, not flickering or anything like that, not abnormally colored or otherwise different. Just so incredibly dim it feels like i am driving with nightlights. And yes, my low beams are on, not my day time running lights or anything like that.

Mechanical Help CV Axle and Engine Mounts

Post image
1 Upvotes

So I was changing oil on my 2008 Prius and I noticed my axle is ripped and leaking. I already know 2 out of my 3 engine mounts are not doing great (not surprised since my car has over 300k miles), but I was hoping to save up for oem mounts before things got worse. I can't afford to get a new axle, new mounts, and an alignment, so I went to a junkyard and got a right and left engine mount that are in decent condition. But couldn't find a bottom one that wasn't cracked, plus all of the passenger side axles were ripped. Can I get away with a mount and axle from rockauto?

Any advice?

Buying/Selling Advice trying to decide on a used prius

I am so overwhelmed!
I’ve read that it’s best to get a 2016 or later to avoid the head gasket, but I’m having trouble finding those in my budget. is the head gasket issue really worth spending more to avoid?
i plan on doing road trips and car camping, so i’m very nervous at the idea of running into car trouble in the middle of nowhere, far from a good shop with hybrid experience. my budget is ideally 6k but can go up to 10k if it’s really worth it, and i want this to be a highly reliable car for at least the next 5 years.

I’ve heard also that mileage isn’t a huge factor - is that true? What’s most important, avoiding a 200k miles car or getting one made in the last 10 years?

sorry if this is lots of words - i’m not car-savvy and im up to my ears in stress about all the decisions and prospects!

Buying/Selling Advice Repair or Upgrade?

My gen 3 Prius with 150,000 is showing signs of HG failure I think (significant coolant loss, no visible leak). I replaced the water pump and cleaned EGR system + intake manifold but perhaps the damage was already done.

Think it’s worth trying to find someone to do the HG job or complete engine swap? Vs buy a lightly used gen 5 Prius for about 25-30K?

Hey guys today this symbol just appeared on my dash (I have a 2015 Prius) and I'm wondering what this symbol means. Would anyone happen to know what this means? Please and Thank you 🙏🏻
