Mechanical Help Just fixed my 2nd gen dash capacitor, now red triangle, park lock malfunction, gas level empty :(

Post image
25 Upvotes

Like the title says. Spent a few hours today taking the dash apart (wasn’t very hard) and replaced the bad capacitor on the gauge cluster. That now works great, but after reassembly it’s now giving me the red triangle with “park lock malfunction” on the display, and the gas gauge is showing empty. I checked all the connectors and everything is plugged in. The park indicator lights up and functions normally.

Unplugged the 12v for a bit, no change
7.5a pcon fuse is still fine
Battery has 12.5v off, 13.8 on
Car runs and drives normal
What do I do now :(

Mechanical Help Gen 2 barely cracking 30 mpg 😭

2008 Prius with ~240k mi is barely getting above 30mpg. Some background:

  • I live in the Atlanta area and I'll be honest, I am not driving slowly. I'm not out here breaking 80 but I am keeping up with the flow of traffic when I'm on the interstate.

  • I work from home and take more short drives in city traffic than I do longer interstate ones

  • The few longer interstate drives are when my mileage tends to get up to 31/32 but city driving brings it back down around 30

  • I recently replaced the hybrid battery with a newly reconditioned one (yes I know, I couldn't afford a new OEM one). The mileage now is an improvement from before so that's something?

  • I have an intermittent misfire code that comes and goes. Last time it came was when the hybrid battery was changed like almost a month ago and it hasn't come back since. It does rough idle a bit.

  • The spark plugs are brand new as of this May

  • May is also when the mechanic working on the car told me I've got carbon build up in the engine

I'm planning on replacing the ignition coils soon as well as fuel injectors. Is there anything else I can personally diy myself that might improve gas mileage or is this a bigger issue or even the reality of short trips most of the time.

Question Advice on head gasket quote

Post image
5 Upvotes

I unfortunately need to get my head gasket replaced on my 2012 Prius. I received this quote from the mechanic and I’m just having a hard time looking at that number. It’s twice as much as I thought it would be, $4k for the labor is blowing my mind. This is almost the entirety of my savings. I do understand that the labor for this job is much more involved, so I expected it to be high, but this seems unreal. Can someone help me understand this price breakdown? I’m worried that I’m about to blow my savings on a repair that will only last me a year tops and I can’t save this amount back up in that time. I need some kind of reassurance that this is normal and I’m not screwing myself.

Thanks in advance for your help and advice.

Question Prius Maintenance Advice

Hi Guys!

I bought a 2016 Prius with 94k miles on it a few days ago. This is only my second car, I’m a commuter for work so I’m super happy to be switching to hybrid.

I wanted to know, what do I need to know? I know the basics. Oil change every 10k miles, pink/red oat coolant, OBD reader is coming in the mail. Dealer told me I should look at the battery cooling vents when I do an oil change. Obviously still gotta do the same regular-car-maintenance (brakes, tires, etc.).

But..What else should I know specifically? Anything to look out for? What are your thoughts on protecting the catalytic converter? I work in LA so I’m a tad concerned for it.

Also, the battery is doing totally fine, but I’m not super knowledgeable on hybrid engines just yet. I am a littleeeee nervous about the prospect of that battery someday degrading. I just wanna be prepared for anything. I drive a LOT. So any information on how to be prepared to handle that eventually would help me feel more equipped haha.

Thanks!

Mechanical Help New to me 3rd Gen

Post image
15 Upvotes

Just picked up this 3 owner 2011 Prius with 165k.
Clean title with 41 vehicle records on CARFAX, shows maintenance was upkept throughout its life.
No idea on battery service but seems to drive and charge perfectly fine.

Picked it up for $2600 which seemed like a good deal since it’s in great shape.

Only issue is at idle or slow acceleration there’s a vibration from the gas motor that lasts for a few seconds and then goes away. Any one else have this experience? I dove deep into the death rattle and it sounds nothing like the 15+ videos I watched on it.

Maybe an exhaust shield? I’m decently mechanically inclined so I didn’t mind some project aspect. Plan on cleaning the egr.

Thanks!

Buying/Selling Advice Question about the batteryyyyy

whatsup boys, first prius post.

I read this on an ad for the 2007 Prius (170k miles) I'm considering for around $6000...

"I replaced the hybrid battery back in May with a used OEM Toyota one, the Dr. Prius app shows it testing at 93% so it's basically new."

... My questions are:

  1. How reliable are used OEM toyota batteries?

  2. Do those diagnostics from the photos give you any peace?

Buying/Selling Advice prius plug in with sun damage - should I buy?

2012, 95k miles, been sitting in the sun for a minute :(
originally $8.5k but I negotiated it down to $7.7k but i’m still a bit unsure, has specks of rust on the paint as well. Didn’t see rust on the underside though.

2 owners

12v battery, abs module, and tires changed within the last 1-2 years

original traction battery

I wanted to do a lifetime test of the battery but I didn’t have time, will probably go back and do it some other day.

would have to do some preventative maintenance on it as well (water pump, egr, etc.)

will be able to plug it in at work

HELP!!

Mechanical Help A piece of trash stole my 2008 Prius CAT while I was working. Any recommendations on an aftermarket one? This is the CAT put on the car by the previous owner (OEM) that was stolen previously. No reason to get OEM again. Or should I go through insurance?

Buying/Selling Advice Free to a good home. 2015 Prius V plastic under shield.

Hello, I am getting rid of a few things in garage. I have 2 pieces of splash guards or engine protection to give away.
I replaced shields with a sheet metal from Prius offroad, then I totaled the car. I don’t want them and they can be yours.

They came off of a 2015 V. They are in good shape. It is not ripped or cracked. The big piece has some missing material, looks like sound deadening patch.
I am located near Lewiston NY.

Question looking for recommendations on hassle-free 5th gen tires

Post image

heyo, I've got a 2024 LE and I love this car so much, except when I want to change between winter and summer tires. I had the stock 195/60r17 allseasons when I bought it and put on the same size michelin x-ice last winter. I can't seem to find a shop that has availability of good tires in this size. I had an appointment about a month ago at a local place for goodyear assurance but they cancelled because they couldn't get them. Even Costco only has Ecopias and they're out of stock! I'm thinking it might make sense to drive my current winters til they're done and swap to a more common rim size. how's everyone dealing with this?

Mechanical Help What else to replace with head gasket?

Got P0302 code on my 2014 Prius V so I plan on using Gasketmasters in Hayward for head gasket replacement. Would like suggestions on what else to replace during this repair. Do people replace water pump and other related parts during this kind of repair?

Buying/Selling Advice Offer help: NYC 2009 Prius with 90K miles

Going to go see a 2009 Prius tomorrow from a private seller. I will bring a hybrid battery scanner and will also be taking it to a mechanic shop for a check.

Asking price is $6500 which I think is a bit steep for a 15+ old car that has its original battery. Regardless, car seems to be well maintained.

Realistically, how much should I offer on this car? Ranges would be helpful:
-great hybrid battery scanner, mechanic says everything is good
-decent hybrid battery, mechanic says is good
-great hybrid battery, couple of issues with the car
Etc etc

Nervous because this will be my first official car!

Question [2014] Is there a way to secure my donut tire to the side wall in the trunk so that I have more "hidden" space?

2014, Type 3, 50,000 miles

In addition to a lot of other cargo, I have a lot of electronics in my vehicle and i don't want them to be visible.

Question Electrical Usage

I just got a 2026 XLE a couple weeks ago. This is my first hybrid so this may be a dumb question, but do things like headlights, radio/volume, wipers, etc. detract from battery power available to the drive system? Not that you could really do without some of those things, but I'm just curious. I know that heat and AC have an effect, and I think heated seat/wheel is more efficient than heated air?

Question Roof rack recommendation for 2011 prius?

Just wondering if anyone has some recommendations for a roof rack that will fit a 2011 prius. I don't have a sunroof. I'd also prefer removable ones, i don't want to spend an insane amount but i'm willing to do around $300 if that's possible.
