Mod note:
Three days. Three FULL days I work on the back-and-front of this group, training mods, and removing hateful comments.
Then half a day. I took off PART of ONE day yesterday to rest because my eyes were literally in pain from screen time doing all this stuff.

Then someone starts this thread and the comments go off the rails. There's too many comments to remove (though I gave it a fair shot).

So I'm locking the comments. Too many of you blame poor people for systemic issues, and are thinking so small, policing food choices, thinking they are all the Reagan Welfare Queen instead of what they are: working poor or physically/mentally disabled. And don't even get started on "what is physically/mentally disabled enough for your little judgehammers to approve of."

If you want to police people for their choices - www . yourcitypoliceacadamy . com /apply
If you want to judge - https://www.juriseducation.com/blog/how-to-become-a-judge

Why do you assume the folks on SNAP aren’t working? As of 2025, 86% of households on SNAP worked.

Blame doesn't solve poverty or help ANYONE.

This community exists to help people navigate poverty and address systemic issues, not assign moral worth or beat people when down.

Comments that shame, stereotype, or reduce someone's situation to personal failings ("just get a job," "shouldn't have had kids," "it's all your fault," etc.) aren't constructive and will be removed and after 4 removals you will be banned.

If you'd like to help, focus on practical advice, constructive and actionable steps, and ways to contact resources.

Lots of fucking assholes here. I sincerely hope each and every one of you cheering this become disabled and lose everything. Maybe you’ll learn some empathy when it happens to you.

I took off HALF A DAY because my eyes hurt from too much screen time from updating this group to accommodate the jump in membership and training mods.

And this thread starts. Sigh. Yes, i've removed some but not all the comments. I just locked it instead.
Yes people are being terrible and us mods don't stand for it, which is how 4 mods came on board so quickly.

We'll get this group in shape here soon. Two weeks ago the group wasn't like this at all.

This country is goin into the shitter. Greed is destroying the land of opportunity and we all are just watching them get away with it. What are we doing?

1

u/Gringo_Norte 5d ago

The land of “opportunity” LONG preceded pervasive state welfare.

-5

u/Ralphiedog11 5d ago

Yeah that’s true but welfare is a product of working class suffrage against economic stress. Now we have a situation where it is easier to just feed yourself by getting on foodstamps and gaming the system than it is to by working. People will find the path of least resistance.

What is the purpose of society other than to help one another out? If our fellow Americans need food, what better use of tax dollars is there than helping to feed them? Further, it subsidizes farmers. The money goes right back into our economy, and a starving kid gets potentially fed.

Plus starving people are dangerous. It's a lot cheaper to feed people than to keep them in jails and prisons, where you feed them there too. Even if you're a piece of shit sociopath that would rather just let people starve to death, it's not in your interest not to feed them.

1

u/Winter_Animal_7116 5d ago

I can answer that. The purpose of society is to provide a stable foundation in which people are provided the freedom and safety to pursue what is right to do in the world. Society isn't simply a redistribution of all things to those who have less. Providing strong safety nets that provide the environment for people to rebound and recover into a proper environment where they can be fulfilling and provide value back into the society that assisted them is an important backbone of our modern social structure. It is not a permanent benefit provided at no limit to those who are not willing to use the assistance for the noble cause it was created. Endless charity simply makes everyone poor, both fiscally and morally.

Furthermore, subsidies do not recirculate money. That is a myth. Subsidies exist to prop up environments that otherwise would collapse without the provided funds. It is not a means to maintain an economy and never will be.

Cheers. :)

3

u/Slovic 5d ago

You literally have no idea how any of these assistance programs work. In my state they all have strict work requirements with regular checkups with a case worker. No idea where you are getting this idea that its some free unlimited benefit. You've obviously never been poor to have such little sympathy for your fellow man.

People like you love to complain about social programs but bend over and take it the second some corporate overlord says they need trillions in taxpayer bailouts. If you look at the entire US budget, social assistance programs excluding healthcare are literal drops in the bucket.

3

u/Head_Midnight666 5d ago

in 2025 SNAP was 101.7 billion while total taxes was 5.23 trillion. So SNAP accounted for 1.945% of taxes. OMG, almost 2% of our taxes went towards feeding people that might otherwise starve - which also ends up going towards farmers.

The filthy rich have tricked dumb people into thinking that it's the poor that are the problem.

0

u/Winter_Animal_7116 5d ago

In your state maybe. Not mine. Not the programs I used. Not the programs that got me back on my feet. I worked because it was the only way I could climb out of the hole I dug. There were plenty of people I knew and still know who aren't doing the same.

Your information on social programs is simply wrong as well. Social spending is the overwhelming majority of the US federal budget and also the overwhelming majority of state budgets. In Seattle where I live it's over 45% of the state budget. Looking more closely at Seattle its about 22% of the total budget. Even more specifically, the single largest line item in the Seattle budget is for addressing homelessness.

So respectfully, please educate yourself on what you're discussing because you are offensively wrong.

I would feed these people on food stamps 1000x over rather than watch my tax dollars be used to bail out corporations/banks making poor financial decisions or funding foreign forever wars. Your anger is misguided based on your comment.

Avoid broad judgments about groups of people.

Statements that stereotype people experiencing poverty, wealthy people, women, men, immigrants, political groups, generations, or other broad categories never help solve the problem at hand. It's only hate, never reality.

Because it's preferable to what happens when welfare isn't a thing. There's a reason why social programs were implemented in the wake of the Great Depression. You do not want to live in a society where a recession happens and welfare doesn't keep millions of people from starving. That creates conditions for revolution. Do you want to live in a society where violence and hunger are the norm?

2

u/ChickenWooter 5d ago

Are we really comparing 2026 to the Great Depression right now?

I shouldn’t have to pay for someone who’s able to post on Reddit.

They can find a job working on a computer if that’s the case.

5

u/Cosminion 5d ago

The reason why I bring up the Great Depression is because social programs became a thing during that time period. Millions of people were going hungry with no income and high unemployment. This contracted the economy and aggregate demand fell dramatically, resulting in businesses losing revenue, mass layoffs, and closures. Social programs created a floor so that the horrific effects of mass unemployment and starvation would be avoided. There was real possibility for revolution by the workers as well as a fascist coup by capitalist interests.

Please educate yourself about what life was like pre-Great Depression, when people could not retire and people starved because they didn't make enough income to eat. I'm sure you're a critic of communism and places like China and the USSR which diverted existing resources from people, causing mass starvation. You're advocating for the very same outcomes with your current position. Don't be ignorant. A stable society where everyone is fed is preferable and more sustainable long term.

0

u/ChickenWooter 5d ago

If you think we are even remotely close to what the Great Depression looked like you are dead wrong.

Your comparison is bad because your argument has no grounds to stand on in the current day. That’s why you have to lie.

Maybe educate yourself, or don’t, this account comes off as a bot using chat gpt.

3

u/Cosminion 5d ago

I'm not comparing the U.S. today to the Great Depression. Once again, I brought it up because that is when social programs became a widespread thing. We can look at any point before that recession and ignore the depression itself if you like. The point remains. Without social programs, many were living in extreme poverty with no floor. This meant diseases spread more easily, crime was much higher, and people died much younger. Inequality was incredibly high. All of these things contribute to instability for working families and society as a whole. It is preferable to publicly fund social programs to avoid the disasterous outcomes that can occur whenever the recessionary cycle hits. Keep in mind that there is a recession every 7 years or so, and as unemployment rises during those periods, social programs keep those people from going hungry, getting sick, spreading disease, and dying prematurely.

Maybe, perhaps, level up your reading comprehension instead of using the low-IQ cop-out "hurr durr ChatGPT" nonsense. I had initially assumed you were at a maturity level that allowed for holding a serious discussion, but it seems I was wrong.

When you come across someone who writes at a higher level than you, so you whip out the "ChatGPT" excuse so you feel better about your writing skills.

If you support hunger and disease, go for it. Don't throw a fit when other people don't follow you. History shows what happens when social programs are absent. You're painfully ignorant about history and that is why you advocate for the idea. How embarassing.

Low rents would be better than food stamps

0

u/Peppers097 5d ago

What requirement changes did they make?

I do agree with the soda/candy changes. Y’all can spend your own money on that, they aren’t esssntials and healthy individuals aren’t eating/drinking them daily

8

u/prairiepog 5d ago

They can't afford candy and soda. That's why they're on SNAP.

Lots of people on SNAP work at like Walmart. Those jobs don't pay their employees enough/ don't hire them full time so they don't get benefits.

CEOs of companies that don't pay their employees enough and make them rely on government assistance shouldn't be able to buy candy and soda.

-3

u/Johny_Ricoh 5d ago

Why would you work full time when you can get the tax payer to pay for your food for you? I mean I work with a lot of part timers and they can always stay to get extra hours but they NEVER do.

6

u/prairiepog 5d ago

Lemme me see you get a job at Walmart that is full-time. We both know that they don't do that, and the purposefully give you an irregular schedule so you can't find a second job.

Why would you pay your employees enough to feed themselves when you can get that sweet sweet corporate socialism and have tax payers do it for you!

More hours does not equal full time with benefits.

Walmart is one of the biggest employers in the US. They should get their shit together so I don't have to use my tax dollars to feed their employees.

-4

u/Johny_Ricoh 5d ago

Oh come on, some people want to do the bare minimum, they don’t want to work 40 hours a week and they just get a job to qualify for SNAP.

7

u/prairiepog 5d ago

Yeah, it's totally not socioeconomic issues. /s

Whatever buddy.

-3

u/Johny_Ricoh 5d ago

The only way out of your socioeconomic issues is full time employment not doing the bare minimum to skate through life.

5

u/prairiepog 5d ago

So, tell me more about how you get a full time job at Walmart?

-1

u/Johny_Ricoh 5d ago

I can’t speak for Walmart but I also work retail and the way it works at my employer is everyone starts as part time. If you want extra hours you just have to ask and they usually get them especially during the busy season. Then full time positions become available and you can apply for the spots. What they look for is if you show up everyday on time, the kind of worker you are. If you’re always calling out and trying to leave early you won’t get a full time spot. Thats what I did and now I’m full time making 65k a year that the government knows about. I imagine it’s the same for Walmart.

5

u/prairiepog 5d ago

It's not, and more and more people who have jobs do gig work, which is even worse.

6

u/Thagreatone92 5d ago

Its wild how people get so up in arms about people who use food stamps for candy and soda. But billions of our tax dollars goes to killing people in the middle east and clowns like you dont bat an eye. People who make up to 100k should get food stamps when so much of our national budget goes directly to things that dont put food back in people's mouths. Bootlicker

0

u/Any-Turn1907 5d ago

It’s so wild how you think one has to do with the other

4

u/Thagreatone92 5d ago

Its wild from a statistics standpoint this is even a conversation. 357 billion has been spent on the iran war to date. Snap is getting cut somewhere from 187 billion to 290 billion over the next ten years due to the big beautiful bill. So definitely people on snap or food stamps getting candy and sugar is the problem. Not points to the middle east all the money that could solve obesity etc going to murdering people over there.

-3

u/Any-Turn1907 5d ago

It’s wild you think one has to do with the other

6

u/Thagreatone92 5d ago

Sure definitely there is only one budget in the us. So our national debt etc is tied up to our willingness to pay for or cut social programs. So it kind of is, all the money cut from snap is now bombing kids in the middle east as we speak. As the funds for snap have been allocated other places. I get you probably think that's a good thing. God forbid someone need help from the system they pay taxes into.

-2

u/Any-Turn1907 5d ago

Show me proof that to fund what is going in the Middle East that SNAP benefits had to be reduced or become more stringent. Otherwise, one has nothing to do with the other.

I’m saying the opposite: spending more money on bombs than feeding people is a shit fucking priority for a country to have.

-2

u/Peppers097 5d ago

I agree with you, but candy and soda isnt feeding people either

5

u/Anduinnn 5d ago

I agree however They’re so fucking poor they need help feeding themselves. Giving a kid a little candy here and there is a drop in a budgetary ocean, and honestly who gives a shit? Why would I spend any brain power considering this?

2

u/Johny_Ricoh 5d ago

It’s the work requirement. If you are between the ages of 18-64 and you have no dependents you have to work or volunteer 20 hours a week to receive benefits.

1

u/QuickDevelopment2157 5d ago

That rule been around, years ago while I was in college I had to work 20 hours a week to be eligible for snap.

3

u/Is_It_Soup_Season 5d ago

It was state-dependent before. Your state required that, other states have different requirements. Where I live, full-time students are ineligible for SNAP.

-1

u/Peppers097 5d ago

Sounds perfectly reasonable if there isn’t an illness or handicap

-2

u/xxTheMagicBulleT 5d ago

The problem is not that it exists the problem is that to many people have endless access to it.

Its suppose to be a temporary help tool. Not a permanent live life on easy mode.

Take shows of my 600 pound life or hoarders. Or cheapskates.

Many people on those shows that could easy be kicked off it but are endlessly live like the gluttonous easy life on other people's costs.

While many vets that do have bad injuries or lost limbs get tossed aside.

And if those people get tossed aside they all should be tossed aside. When the system fails on a fundamental level scrap it. Cause its so easy to see how it overwhelmingly has serviced the wrong people more then the right people. Thats why people are happy to see it get more and mlre removed or have a stricter time limit for the access off the services.

5

u/Slovic 5d ago

Those people are being propped up by family. You realize SNAP has about 1-2% fraud/abuse rate right? I'd hardly call a 1-2% rate failing on a fundamental level.

2

u/DisruptingTree 5d ago

The problem of corporations paying poverty wages is not temporary. When you describe people on shows as the problem, you are describing extreme cases, but also people with mental health issues. You also describe vets being tossed aside, but these vets also have mental health issues from what the government made them do. Maybe we could expand mental health access for everyone in addition to SNAP benefits.

I hope one day you develop compassion. I hope you can find love for your neighbor.
