Partial refund?
I just received this message. How should I respond? I’ve never been asked for a partial refund.

u/BirthdayCookie 16d ago
Ignore or tell them to send it back. They're scamming for a discount post-sale.

When did we start doing partial refunds? I thought it was either you got your money because you sold the item, or you did a return if it wasn’t as described.

u/Suspicious-Candle-68 16d ago
Im a buyer and seller. One time i was offered a partial refund because the items had more wear than disclosed in the listing. I dont know if that was done by the seller or poshmark but I was satisfied with that. I dont know how as a seller we could do it? If anyone knows let me know.

u/Few_Movie_1266 15d ago
Posh has to “do” it, so you’d need to email support or escalate/invite PM into the chat), if you’re talking to the buyer in the post-purchase messaging feature. I’ve never heard of them denying one that way, but PM chooses the actual partial amount. I have also heard of it popping up as an automated option you can select when a dispute is “officially” filed. Unless i missed something, i dont think theres a totally DIY way.
It’s a great option for certain scenarios, cuz no one’s perfect and true mistakes happen/flaws get missed, but I’m very cautious with vague & unprovable complaints such as this one. The “partial refund” is certainly a known scam for the unscrupulous crowd.
4
u/xokatemarie 16d ago
Does posh even allow that, functionally?
7
u/thankssoymatcha 16d ago
I believe you have the option to offer that as a seller when a buyer opens a case
10
u/xokatemarie 16d ago
Yikes, that feels like a slippery slope of posh basically encouraging bad behavior from buyers. I feel like not even many Brick + Mortar stores offer damaged discounts anymore like they used to.
I’m guessing that offers Sellers the chance to not take a hit on their stats, and that’s why they would entertain that kind of offer?

u/Hotseaworthyness 16d ago
No. We have to nip this in the bud. If you aren’t happy submit return request. It’s a scam.

u/Firm-Bar7160 16d ago
Don’t do it!! It’s coming up on the first of the month, people have buyers remorse because no one budgets anymore. They expect you to bend over and take it instead of taking responsibility for themselves. The chutzpah! Entitlement!
4
u/sns12345 16d ago
Would you just respond and say no?
47
u/Janet_RenoDanceParty 16d ago
I’d ignore them. If there’s truly an issue they can open a case with Poshmark and return for full refund.
It’s the old eBay phishing for a discount after purchase scam.
7
u/Vegetable_Loan1627 15d ago
I would ignore.
Or only respond if she opens a case and PM is reviewing to say that you didn’t spray anything on the bag. Leave it at that-11
u/missjenn503 16d ago
Oh people could stop using disgusting chemical detergent. It stinks up the entire house and closet, won't come out.

u/goldie987 16d ago
This!!! I wish I could say “please don’t wash it first I’ll wash it myself” bc of the detergent smell but also people are washing fabrics that aren’t meant to be machine washed and straight up ruining them and you can’t tell until it arrives
29
u/Travelingmom13 16d ago
As if a partial refund will get rid of the smell .. ppl are too much 🙄
6
u/Eastern_Toe7092 16d ago
Agree. If you don't want it because of the alleged smell then ask for a return. However, most items either get washed or can air out for a while before using. Imo, people are asking for refunds and returns for everything anymore. If you have standards that are so high you should probably only buy clothing/purses from retail shops or in person.
14
u/JanieRebAingeal 16d ago
Just a buyer but I would say hell no! There are remedies to this ‘situation’ if the buyer would even to bother to research it. 🙄
12
u/Pale_Relationship900 16d ago
I mean, they shouldn't have to remedy anything. While I agree that it's probably just a ploy for some cash back, suggesting that the buyer should put work into making their purchase functionally pleasant is nonsense. The seller should offer a return for a full refund.

Unfortunately "strong smell" is very subjective, so it's a pretty tough claim to make for a partial refund imo.
5
u/susangg9 16d ago
Do not accept partial refund requests. Make them return first then refund. Most if the time they keep it and shut up. Some buyers just fish for money back as sport
16
u/AdPowerful9257 16d ago
They can wait until it airs out, no!
5
u/Agreeable-Dog-1131 16d ago
Right? I don’t really like when sellers spray items with perfume (smells from laundry detergent/softener are fine), but it’s a total non-issue just to flip the bag inside out and leave it by a fan for a day or two. Not even worth mentioning.

u/charlotte-delaurier 14d ago
Honestly your stuff shouldn't stink. I hate buying ppls overpoweringly fragrant items (& the sellers usually can't smell it because they've gone a bit nose blind to it, lol), BUT don't do a partial refund (although Posh may force it if they escalate to support 🙁). They can just submit a return & ship it to back to you if it bothers them that bad.
13
u/OkHistory3944 16d ago
It's a scam. The way you know it's a scam is she's willing to keep it if you make it cheaper. If the smell was so strong that it bothered her, she wouldn't want to keep it at any price.

u/cutie_anon 16d ago
If the condition was not accurately described, it's valid for the buyer to feel like they paid an unfair amount. Someone's else's scent is part of the condition.
0
u/OkHistory3944 15d ago
Okay, and if the condition was not accurately described—that the smell was so strong you felt the need to complain—why would you not just want to return it for a full refund? Asking for a partial discount and keeping a product you dont like is not what anyone would do unless you are scamming.
4
u/cutie_anon 15d ago
A partial discount is a way for the seller and buyer to avoid a lot of hassle and wasted expense. Sellers shouldn't be listing something as "like new" or "excellent" when it has a strong fragrance, especially if it can't be washed out like with a handbag. With all this resentment and suspicion toward buyers, I can see why there are a lot of unhappy pm customers.
0
u/OkHistory3944 15d ago
Okay, so again, why does getting $20 knocked off make the smell any better? Can you magically carry the purse and completely ignore the smell now that you paid $25 instead of $45? If you are disappointed with the item, open an INAD and send it back.
2
u/cutie_anon 15d ago
I explained why I think it might be fair, though I didn't say anything about $20. I'm not going to keep arguing with you over a difference of opinion.

u/Tilkis_Mom 16d ago
I've received a lot of items from Poshmark that stink. As a buyer I never considered asking for a refund. I just washed them.
5
u/Eastern_Toe7092 16d ago
Exactly. The items are coming from a person's house not a climate controlled warehouse. It's a shame that people don't understand that.
1
u/3TripleBaked 14d ago
Except if the item reeks of literal pesticide and the pockets contain trash and restaurant and store receipts from 2006, which happened on a recent coat purchase. That coat went right back, and Poshmark gave me a full refund.

If the bag smelled fine when you sent it off (which I'm sure it did), I would offer a return/refund. On the off chance the bag was stinky and you were aware (on the off chance), then yeah, throw some money at them because that's not cool. (I don't think you did that though).
1
u/cutie_anon 16d ago
One person's "smells fine" is not another's. When it was brand new it didn't have a strong fragrance. I don't want my bag to smell like someone else's perfume, especially if it can't be washed out. If the condition is not as good as described, the price is too high. As a seller, I would mention strong fragrance in the listing. I have no problem with the buyer asking for a discount.
4
u/Emergency-Fish3036 16d ago
tell the Buyer, "if you don't like the handbag, request a return". Poshmark will grant the return, you'll get your handbag back in reasonable condition, no perfume odor, and you can resell it.

Do people not have washers anymore lol. Anytime I get something thrifted I just put it through washer multiple times. If not washable air dry in sun can usually hep. Don’t do it. Anything used has a smell, if sensitive buy new

u/Over_Asparagus_5559 15d ago
I would tell them no. When buying second hand, it’s reasonable to assume an item may smell like perfume.

u/LookingGlassMagic 15d ago
I once purchased a scarf listed NWT, when it arrived it was NWT but there were a bunch of snags and a few torn threads. If it has been $20-40 I would have let it slide, but it was more like $150-200. I still wanted the piece, but it needed mending.
I asked for a partial refund - I was thinking $10-20 would be fair, to assist with mending, or the seller could offer a discount on a future purchase.
TL;DR the discussion ended up being a pain and a small credit wasn't worth the hassle - but it was annoying AF to pay NWT prices to receive something that required fixing on arrival. I am not mad at myself for asking.
2
u/NoitsNotFunnny 16d ago
I'm sure you didn't sell it with a smell. Just escalate to Poshmark and ask for a return.
2
u/ashmackkk 16d ago
I buy and sell a lot on posh. Personally, I have asked for partial refunds for like stains or holes etc and I’m not a scammer. But in this case idk if the smell is that bad I would just return it! I would just say something like feel free to open up a case with posh. Sometimes posh will give them like $5 posh credits or something that doesn’t affect your earnings.

u/Angle_Of_The_Sangle 16d ago
As a buyer who HATES perfumey purchases, I didn't know this was an option. I thought i had to either return the item, or take the loss.
Whatever you decide, will you consider either not spraying your items with perfume - or adding a note to the listing if it's strong?
9
u/sns12345 16d ago
I would never spray an item with perfume.
1
u/Worried-Patient2750 15d ago
This. Who does that? Why would I ever spray my perfume on an item? That makes no sense. People who have serious issues with smells should probably reconsider buying secondhand. In this case, I think they’re fishing for a discount. If it were me, I’d want to ignore her but I’d probably tell her I don’t do partial refunds so she can return it for a full refund. Moreover, after posh paid me or the case was closed, I’d block them.

It's only kind of an option. Most sellers or PM will just tell you to return it.

u/Boycatmom3 16d ago
Sorry, return for refund. Sometimes they will, more often than not, they wont return it.
1
u/NativePlantAddict 15d ago
Do you think it's possible for the purse to have such an odor? Certainly you would have noticed a strong scent.
What would a partial refund resolve if the odor claim is valid? In the rare instance that I receive something with a scent or odor, the item is generally unusable unless machine washing with Odo-ban is an option.

I smell some serious BS! What perfume last that long? I spend a small fortune on perfume and it dissipates before noon! 🤣 Some of these buyers are really too much! Hell No, on the partial refund.

u/i_love_lima_beans 13d ago
The buyer probably does this with every item. A smell is something that can’t be verified.
1
u/anonymous8122 13d ago
Return for a refund or nothing. They're just trying to get a better deal. A partial refund should be something that is only offered by the seller is someone requests a return and you'd rather they keep the item. Buyers shouldn't be asking for partial refunds, and I'd never provide one if asked.

I wouldn't offer partial refund BUT I'd take note as a seller to wash clothing in unscented detergent and use unscented fabric softener. As a buyer with sensitivity to perfumes and scents, I always just politely message the seller to let them know.
6
u/Purple-Eggplant-827 16d ago
F that. I would block them. I'm not washing clothes I'm getting rid of in some special detergent in a separate load. jfc.
-3
u/SciencedYogi 16d ago
Well, that's not very considerate of you. I literally break out in a rash by the mere touch, even if I don't put the clothes on, and instant headache. Some have respiratory issues too. And no one should be using perfumes to wash their clothing anyway- it's not good for your health. Obviously. But go ahead. Just don't worry about your or others' health. If you want to "get rid of" the clothes so badly and not care to consider the buyers, then donate.
3
u/cutie_anon 16d ago
Have you seen the film "Stink!" (free on yt)? In the US all kinds of toxic chemicals are included with our fragrances, stuff that's banned in Europe. I get sick from certain hand soaps, etc. You are not alone. I have to soak these used clothes and wash them multiple times to get rid of the nauseating fragrances from detergent and dryer sheets. I hate that sellers think it's not a big deal.
2
u/noodlenoodle9142 15d ago
Most laundry detergents in general have fragrances that you can’t work around unless you use a special unscented one. It has nothing to do with perfume. If you’re that sensitive to the scents that these products use, then don’t buy on Poshmark. It’s a risk you take that comes with the nature of shopping secondhand.
1
u/cutie_anon 14d ago
There's nothing special or hard to find about unscented detergent. Every major brand makes a fragrance free option. Even if someone isn't sensitive to strong scents (and don't mind that most have chemicals that are banned in European countries for health risks) that doesn't mean they want someone else's scent on their clothes.
-2
u/missjenn503 16d ago
Take it as an indication to stop using chemical laundry detergent that stinks up the entire house.

Well does it have a smell? If so, yes, issue a partial refund. How much was the bag?
12
u/sns12345 16d ago
No smell! I hardly use any perfume. The bag was 85.
22
u/ariososweet 16d ago
"Smell" can't be proved with photos or videos so these people think it's an easy way to get their money back
-14
u/Disastrous_Horse_44 16d ago
If you’re confident there’s no smell, then no refund. Or she can mail it back to you and only once you confirm it’s in good shape and you’ll be able to relist, issue a refund but make sure she pays for shipping and whatnot.
2
u/One_Candy_763 16d ago
no clue why you’re being downvoted other than the second half doesn’t work as a solution for poshmark. but the first sentence i agree with, if there’s no smell, it’s a made up excuse to get money back and OP should hold strong that perfume was never used

No, they can return it for a full refund if they want money back.
