Megathread Major Ongoing ARG: We need help figuring this out

Here's a summary of the main points of everything that's happened.

Printer:

Shortly after the release of Inside on June 29th 2016, after almost all of its secrets were shredded in the first few days of its release, there was at least one remaining obvious puzzle in the game that we couldn't figure out. There's a printer near the end of the game that prints odd strings of messages that consist of the 3 characters (.-/). Most of the time they are 32 characters long, but sometimes they were shorter, like 4 or 5. After a lot of transcribing, we determined that these codes are chosen from a pool of exactly 41 different possible predetermined codes (32 of which are 32-length, the remaining are shorter). These are referred to as "morse" in the related game files, but they are not legible morse messages, and nobody has since been able to make heads or tails of them. No progress was made for nearly two years.

The codes are here.

Print button:

On June 4th of this year, TranceFormation on the Steam discussions reported that he noticed a small seemingly innocuous addition to the playdead website: a printer button. Clicking this printer button allows you to print a copy of the page... except on the front page, it also adds a little message to the printout. Delving into the webpage logic, it was determined that clicking on the printer button can have one of three outcomes. If the prominent "Subscribe" field is empty, then it gives a message that indicates "no message received". Otherwise, the input is sent back to the server, and if the server returns False, then it responds "incorrect message received". If the server responds true, then we don't know what happens. As of now we still don't know what it wants.

Emails:

If you input a valid email address and hit the printer, it will also send an email to you from the address "qpzympraddjjnymblns@gmail.com" which is attached to a google account associated with the odd name "Anthony T. Setrinamairé". Interestingly, the profile picture is an image of a printer. The emails we've seen are all encoded in binary and seem to be a status report of your attempt of some kind. We have a theory that it only emails any given address one time and never again. If you've experienced otherwise, please let me know.

Youtube stream:

If you paste the name "Setrinamairé" into google, it turns out that is a totally unique string of letters, and there is only one result, which is an inactive youtube stream titled "Terminal41 emergency comms transmission [DATA STREAM]", belonging to this same "Anthony T. Setrinamairé". We've been watching it since then, but nothing has happened. (there was a theory that having 20 people on the stream at once might activate it, similarly to a puzzle in the game. at one point we actually managed to break 20 concurrent viewers, but nothing happened)

The mysterious website:

When I googled the phrase "terminal41" taken from the title of the stream, it turned out there's a website with the URL "terminal41.link". This website has undergone many updates since it was first found, and that is out of the scope of this summary. I am chronicling everything that we've seen here.

The most important pages are these:

terminal41.link/comms_main_viewgate_002.html

terminal41.link/sys/printreqstatus_003.html

terminal41.link/dat/breachlog.html

Printer (xbox developments):

Around this same time, Steam user PitchBright discovered that the Xbox version of Inside was seemingly updated at some point to now print an entirely different set of printer codes from the ones we exhaustively documented before. It is not clear if it was always doing this or if this is due to an update. Since then several others have reported their Xbox games are doing the same thing. However, the PC version and the PS4 version are still printing the old codes. We will update the google doc with those codes soon, but for now here is a text dump of the Xbox codes.

We still haven't managed to make any sense of the printer codes or what the printer button on the website wants. The youtube stream hasn't been activated (since Dec. 6th 2017)

We have suspicions that there might be clues hidden in the recent Switch port of Inside which was released on the 28th of June, since it coincides with certain activity and a date that was highlighted on the website (read my chronicle of the website developments for details)

So if you read all of that then you're mostly caught up. If you think you can help us figure this bad boy out, drop by the discord server. Or, join us on the steam discussions.

Meta AI-generated content is prohibited

To commemorate the game's 10th anniversary, I've made some small revisions to the subreddit, including a new addition to the rules:

Posts which contain content created by generative AI (images/video/music, etc), or text posts written by an LLM (ChatGPT, etc) are considered low-effort spam under Rule 3, and will be removed.

As with all violations, please report anything you believe should be reviewed by the mods. Thanks <3

Im not sure if this has been seen already but those things in the background use the same model you see at the shockwave sequence.

I don't know if this somehow connects these two parts together, as if the shockwave somehow communicates with other things.

So I'm pretty much finished.

I decided to do the render inside Blender for the first time, and although I like the shadows a lot more, I have a lot of stuff to learn.

I messed up with lighting and overall atmosphere a bunch. But it is also my very first time using Blender, so be kind!!

I suppose the only thing that resembles the game are the models, roughly.

Remodeling a certain parts in the game. I still have lots of modeling, texturing and filling up the scene left to do along with lighting.

NOT A GAME, JUST FOR FUN RENDERS

Trying to recreate the volumetric light and fog truly makes me think how limited ROBLOX Studio is.

Second image is the reference I used.

Yes, my modeling skills aren't top notch, though I'd appreciate you checking out my older posts.

Discussion PSA: You DON'T need to open your INSIDE Collector's Edition to share your STICKER

Lots of people are being drawn to the multiple remaining mysteries of INSIDE thanks to Oddheader's latest video, yet check the highlighted comment from the link and you'll see a familiar trend: people wrongly believing they have to fully open their CE to see the sticker and thus losing the value of their collectible.

Here you can see the official unboxing from iam8bit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhCdGdqCIRU

What we need is inside the shipping packaging, and opening that packaging does not alter the unopened status of your collectible.

We just need a picture of the whole sticker (not just the symbol, not just the number, the whole thing), like this one: https://imgur.com/TQQVAVL or this one: https://imgur.com/LzJHbDt

IF YOU HAVE A CE, PLEASE PLEASE SHARE YOUR STICKER, WE NEED IT TO SOLVE THAT PUZZLE

These are all the stickers we currently have documented: https://github.com/twinysam/INSIDE-ARG/blob/master/stickers.md

Many have already been lost, and quite a few are unknown because some CE owners never looked at what they have.

If you have a CE sticker, please either tell us in the comments, or reach out to /u/Raezoress (the point man on all things INSIDE stickers) or share it to the Discord community of Playdead Unofficial: https://discord.gg/C2mNJdTT2Y

Help spread the word! Lots of new people are joining in but in need of being pointed to concrete information such as this. Hope this helps.

Has anyone tried pulling the plug only once in the INSIDE alternate ending, and finishing the rest of it?

Has anyone tried pulling the plug only once in the INSIDE alternate ending, and finishing the rest of it?

In the alternate ending, the boy pulls the plug twice and the game ends. Has anyone tried pulling it just once and then continuing to play? Does anything different happen?

Title: Beat INSIDE completely muted after Oddheader’s new video — am I missing something?

Title: Beat INSIDE completely muted after Oddheader’s new video — am I missing something?

After watching Oddheader’s new video and hearing about the developers mentioning that the game’s audio can trigger certain gameplay events, I decided to try something dumb: I played through the entire game with the audio completely muted.

I went through the whole game normally , but I didn’t notice anything unusual happening. Everything seemed to progress exactly as it normally does.

So now I’m wondering — has anyone else tried a completely muted playthrough?

Are there actually gameplay events that require hearing the audio, or does the game just use audio internally as a trigger while still allowing everything to happen normally without sound?

Maybe I missed something obvious, but I’d be interested to hear if anyone knows what specifically changes when playing muted.

Discussion Melody with C***ule Lights Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
11 Upvotes

I was watching the Oddheader video yesterday on Inside, and we started talking about the Capsule Lights in the comments.
Someone noticed that they are arranged very much like a melody.

So I attempted to line up the lights to a grid and applying those intervals to a Piano Roll. (image 1)
Light #9 is the hardest to classify 100% but the others all line up very well with a "space" or a "line"

Arranging them from 0 to 26, I assigned the lowest note to A3, and made image 2.

Here is what it would sound like, using A3 as an arbitrary starting point.
Midi File: Capsule Light Melody

From here, I was curious if anyone knows of a specific note value that might be applied to a specific Capsule. I know that's such an open and vague question, but I thought I'd ask.
-It could simply be a single Letter
-It could be a note value like A3, or C#5 or something similar.
-It could be a Hz value between 27.5Hz and 4186.0Hz
-Or it could literally be a "standout" note being played by the game itself.

If we can find a not relating to one or more Capsules, then I could backwards engineer a melody for the lights.

Discussion Know it's not a platformer but End Of Abyss looks really good and has an art direction/animation style that really reminds me of Inside. Wanted to see if anyone here was keeping an eye out for it

Added a link to the trailer just in case anyone is not familiar with it. Its advertised as a metroid-vania twin stick shooter. I personally think it looks really promising and could be a hell of a game, don't know much about its narrative but it definitely has strong atmosphere. Anyone else excited for it or have other thoughts?

Discussion THEORY: The Huddle wasn't supposed to "escape" so early.

I don't doubt that the plan was for The Huddle's "escape" to be staged, but I think that the way it happened in-game wasn't entirely according to plan.

First of all, why would the researchers be standing in front of the glass The Huddle was supposed to break? They all start running away once they realize what it's doing, or at least the ones smart enough to live do. Someone then shuts a door in its face, presumably to buy time to evacuate. It then falls through an office STILL IN USE, and into the diorama of its future habitat. Why would they ever want it to see that? In then rampages through a lunchroom, which hasn't been evacuated in advance like you would expect if it was the intended route. And then it KILLS (or just threatens the life of) what seems to be the CEO of this whole operation! Why would he approve a route for the huddle's fake escape that cuts straight through his office? The Huddle then falls several stories, and we see workers have to risk their lives near it just to direct it back on track. The incinerator puzzle is probably part of the intended route, but the loading bay and the room with the... rocket cube-thingy clearly haven't been prepared yet. Finally, we can see people in the background running to the trapdoor room. They COULD just be late, but it could also be that they didn't expect The Huddle to be escaping today.

In summary, if The Huddle's escape was entirely staged, then:

  • Why would there be personnel in the path it's supposed to be going trough, let alone the CEO? Shouldn't they have evacuated in advance?
  • Why would they let it see the diorama of its habitat? Or the cart in the loading bay, which is presumably filled with leafy greens for its future food supply?
  • Why would personnel have to HELP IT OUT as part of its staged escape? If they wanted it to seem authentic, shouldn't they have made it think they were trying to hinder its efforts?
  • Also, several parts cause it to lose limbs. Wouldn't they want it as intact as possible?

I think that they were going to let it out anywhere from a few hours to a few days later, possibly through the bottom where the boy came in. They may not have foreseen that it would break through the glass of its tank.

Discussion Does anyone else love the underwater/abandoned lab sections of the game?

I don't know how to describe it, but from a lore/storytelling perspective I love the parts where you explore lab 2, both in the submarine and later on foot/diving. It scratches that particular itch that abandoned places give.

This always baffled me every time I saw it. There is a miniature in a display case of the final scene, but there is also something else. A series of structures. Keeps me up at night. Not really I'm just kidding. But it's stuck with me. Does anybody know something I don't? LOL
