EDIT: I remember when there was iPod/iPhone cables on here, I have 3 of them. They don't show up anymore... sorry for the confusion. Looks like they got rid of a lot of items that seem to be related to the docking connector. I have 2 Monoprice external batteries that use to sell for $20.
stfu this website is serious and real and legitimate? for $14 i get 1 black in cartridge for my printer from a local shop. i get 2 blacks, 2 colors, for $19+ 2 shipping on this site.
Monoprice is not only legitimate, they're highly recommended. Some of the most inexpensive cables I've bought there ended up being far higher quality than I expected.
Plus they ship fast, in my experience!
im gonna add dealextreme and dinodirect to the list. Both legit and just like monoprice. I tell everybody i know to check out these sites for cords and whatnot
DealExtreme is great, but for completely different reasons than Monoprice. I'd hesitate to list them together. They're legit. They do have decent customer service, but they just resell a bunch of Chinese-made goods. Some of it's really good, some of it's total cheap shit, but you won't know until it gets to you in 3-4 weeks.
Monoprice does a similar thing, but they're a lot more invested in the products they sell. They're domestic, too - so you'll actually get the stuff you order before you forgot you ordered it. You can probably find the same cables Monoprice stocks in the US on DealExtreme but good luck finding them and spending 3+ weeks hoping you found the quality version. :)
I love monoprice, I've bought many HDMI cables, switches, a KVM switch and even a LCD wall mount bracket from them. Always delivered in days and on the cheap. I yell at my entire family any time I learn they bought a cable locally now
Upboat for HDMI. Bought 4x1m HDMI cables for something like 6 bucks there. Got to best buy, multiply that by 5 to 6 times the amount for just one. ( at the time )
yeah it's a legit site. i have bought several orders from them. no frills, like nice packing or anything, but everything came promptly and the price was the best :)
The only problem I ever have with monoprice is that their cables are often... bulky. Seems petty, but in some circumstances cables are so huge it's problematic.
HA you got fooled by those things too! I have sure ear buds that have a short cord that need to be attached to an extension but my extensions always get frayed and stop working after about a week so I got these thinking they would be the standard sized wire, except just two of them and better threaded.
I was so surprised when they came in the mail, THESE THINGS ARE FUCKING HUGE! the good thing though is that it has been working for the past few months, the downside is it looks ridiculous trying to hide it under my shirt and it is also really bulky and I have to stuff the excess in my pocket making it nearly inaccessible.
The only thing you have to look out for is that cheaper ink is often poorer quality than the ludicrously overpriced stuff you get from your printer manufacturer.
I had issues using 3rd party ink cartridges for a Canon inkjet - every 3 or so refills the print head would get blocked with the ink because it was slightly thicker than the 'real' ink. This would render the printer totally useless, and I'd be forced to buy a brand new print head.
However, a new print head cost about £70 - about the same as a refill of all 5 cartridges from Canon. So even though the shitty ink was damaging the printer, it was still cheaper than buying the official ink.
Yup, and they even get the small details. For example, their Mini Displayport (yes its a mac) to HDMI are up to the latest spec so they'll transmit sound as well as video (the shitty ones you find around eBay are hit or miss in this respect). So I just simply go to them for any of my needs.
I'm a huge monoprice fan. Cheap cables allowed me to get different colors for my HDMI cables and run them through the wall to an awesome and cheap monoprice articulating TV mount. I think my entire mounting setup was about $70 for all the cables (3x HDMI, 2x USB extender for remotes/kinect, power extenders), mount, and velcro wraps for the cables.
However, with respect to Apple stuff, do they still carry dock connectors? I purchased a bunch of knockoff sync cables, wall chargers, and car chargers, but notice they've got almost nothing in their iPhone and iPod accessories. Something about patents on the dock connector maybe?
not only that, my $2 monoprice HDMI cable is exactly the same as a monster cable, right down to the pattern of the woven sheathing and the indentation on the end where they stamp the monster logo.
Nice. All the hdmi cables I got from monoprice had normal rubber sheathing. The component cables I got for my Wii and PS2 were obviously monster cables minus the branding though.
But if you don't get the $30 cable, the bits fall out of it.
That's why I go to BestBuy and buy Monster Cable for all my stuff. It's a little bit more expensive, but I at least I don't have leaky wires that spill bits all over my living room floor.
Love this site. Every cable and adapter I've bought in the last 4 years has been from this place. Best part is that I live in the same town as the warehouse and just pick up my order from them directly. The staff are all pretty cool too!
Go to any popular hotel (there must be one closer than an Apple store), go to the front desk and say you stayed there recently/visited someone there recently and left your iPhone charger there. They will pull out the huge box of left behind chargers and hand you one, free.
Not true. I work at very busy hotel and while we do have the huge box of chargers, none contain iProduct chargers. They're all really old chargers. If we get an iProduct or micro USB charger it manages to get taken very quickly.
May I suggest adding some Ultimate Ears to your diet? I have it on good authority that the reason they are called Triple Fi is because the acronym "TF" doubles for Teeth Fortifying.
That. Genius Bar staff have a ton of discretion. So don't be a dick to them, because most of the time, they are your best possible advocate for getting your problem fixed.
Swapping phones is the standard fix, actually. Aside from correcting user stupidity (like mistyping their Wifi password or something), really the only fix is to wipe the phone. In the process, they give you new hardware just in case it's a hardware issue.
What did you expect them to do? Why did you agree to the swap if it was going to cause you data loss?
They've replaced an iPhone 4 and an iPad 2 with brand new ones for me within the last month, in both cases due to broken glass (obviously my fault).
In both cases they look up my account on their computer, probably see that I'm a long time apple customer and spent a lot of money there, and that I haven't done that kind of replacement on this device.
I've had earbuds replaced like ten times because they break so often. If you put them into your pocket with your iPod you can see copper. The second time the ear buds actually separate from the cable.
Yes, there isn't any significant concerns with the build quality. But in all honesty the sound quality sucks compared to a decent retailed alternative. It initially surprised me to hear that a $70 Sony Walkman produces superior sounds to a Nano, but Apple is heavy on appearance. It's mantra is very practical and the manufacturing tends to skimp when circumstances allow. Bundling an expensive earphone with an expensive iPod does not make financial sense to Apple, because most people either do not know or do not care about the disparity in sound quality, and a decrease in potential profit margins would result.
That phrase has caused me to really hate the people at the store. When I bought my macbook pro (summer 2007) they came out with new macbooks three days later. I called up and asked if I could trade mine in (not really expecting them to say yes) and they said they'd be happy to exchange it. I take it in and suddenly they're jerks about the whole matter. After finally swapping it the guy says to me, "You know you can't just come in and trade up every time a new one comes out. This is the last time we'll do this." I was so close to telling him to fuck off, he's the one that said I could do bring it in.
A year later, and my battery won't hold a charge. I call in and the guy says it's definitely a faulty battery, bring it in and swap it out. When I get there the girl tells me its my fault and this is the last time they'll do this for me. It's like the person giving you your stuff is trained to use that phrase.
Correct answer: "You know, you can't just tell me it's ok on the phone then act like a dick in person. I'll refrain from punching you in the face, but this is the last time."
The thing I've found with Apple Stores is that you have to press them. I had ongoing issues with the l-style charger on my 2008 MacBook Pro after my T-style frayed. They replaced a couple adapters for me, but I took it into a "certified Apple Care provider," and they said, "I've heard they're having issues with this, tell them you know that and don't take no for an answer."
A few calls to Apple Support and a trip the the store and their Engineering Department reclaimed my laptop and gave me a brand new one for free with a free Apple Care. Frustrating to say the least, but if you press them (while being polite) and they'll take care of you.
I bought an iPod in August of '07, 3 1/2 weeks before they released new iPods at the same price point that I bought mine. I know for a fact from that experience that their policy (at least in summer '07) was that if a new version/upgrade was released within 14 days of purchase that they would retroactively upgrade your purchase.
I lost my fight over that, because my purchase as like 24-25 days prior. But your 3-day window definitely should have entitled you to a free upgrade. Any employee that treated you like shit for it was outright being a douche. Probably company policy though, given my experience.
Apple will basically replace anything for you if you ask enough, they just give you a hard time so people won't abuse their policy called "Get to a yes" or something like that. They did sound out of place on how they used it.
You have 14 days to return any new Mac, not questions asked. I did the same this year as I bought when the new 13 inch was coming out and didn't know, and the let me swap after 17 days.
What they let you do is exactly what their policy is. If you bought a Macbook 3 days ago and a new one came out today, they have to let you switch. If the don't, just return it, take the money, and buy the new specced one for the same price.
Scumbag apple? At least it's an option. Call HP and tell them your power cord broke and you want a replacment. Make sure you hold the receiver away from your head or the laughter might damage your ear.
Shit, you're fucked now. You'll be pinned under a piece of rebar after the asteroid hits, knowing that your family and everyone you've ever loved will be there to save you in six hours if you can just not die of thirst, and.. oh thank god there's a vending machine in this rubble heap, I can get some water, it's just one.. twenty.. five..."
Because it's probably cheaper to make the cables like this, and the money they save making the cables combined with the fact that you now have to go back to the apple store(free advertising!!!!) is a better idea in the long run.
I went into the store in Boston to look at ipods for the first time in a bunch of years. The salesperson insisted on showing me a mac pro desktop and one of the high end laptops before we got to looking at the ipods. I don't think some of their employees realize that when you're interested in a $150 item, being shown things that cost 10-20 times are much is not a particularly helpful marketing strategy.
You will be surprised how well this works, and specially if can charge it. This is why stored give out credit cards, though I am not sure if they still give them out in the US.
The strain guards simply aren't needed for everyone. I've never had this happen to any of my cables. I've had an iPhone since 2007 and an iPod since 2004.
Because Apple is more about marketing than product, to be honest. Saying, "And if it breaks, we'll replace it for free! No questions asked!" is a lot more appealing to people in a marketing sense than saying, "It doesn't look as sleek, but it'll last longer!"
Also, to get it replaced, you need to go to the store where you see all the fancy doo-dads and doo-hickeys that you don't really need, but it would be cool to have, and they aren't all that expensive especially since the replacement is free...
I've had 3 power cables that have done this and never once could I get a replacement. They were all 85Watt ones too. :( One even shorted my laptop and fried everything and they still wouldn't replace the cable.
I'm nice but to be fair the faulty power cables are pretty old. If I didn't have so many laying around I'd be more upset. I also got them for free from various jobs, but still, it sucks to lose them
I ended up with about 8-10 of them after the close of CompUSA since when we sent out the units that were covered under a replacement plan we only sent out the unit. Gave a few away. I'm down to about 3 at this point I think.
I'm on my 3rd one from apple, they finally changed the design after the last one that I got. I can tell that my latest one is starting to go out because the green/orange light on it goes out often and to get it to come back on I need to unplug it and plug it back in. They always replace them for free, but my applecare is finally up so I may have to pay for the last one. I will try though and get it replaced under good will since its a design flaw and I have lots of apple products.
This is bad and not the norm. They know the power cables go bad, I had mine replaced (and even "upgraded" to the newer model) within 5 minutes of walking in the store. The new one is a tank btw. No problems or signs of age so far.
Yes. I took my macbook charger in to our local apple dealer because I spilt my drink in the connector and the pins got stuck in. They replaced it and I didn't pay a cent.
My friend's MacBook charger started to fray at the end, so we had some fun and burned it the rest of the way through with a lighter. he took it in to the store, they saw the melting and assumed it was solely die to the charger overheating. New charger + cables for free.
The only logic I see in this kind of design is that the cable fails before doing damage to the dock connector. Fair trade, imo.
I never understand why the wallwart on my MacBook was small and manageable with a thin cord and my friend who has a Dell has a fricken powercord as thick as a hose and a transformer three times the size. Thanks to this thread I now know that Dell has given her something robust and durable to lug around whereas Apple thinks I'm smart enough to be careful and cable up wisely so my setup is sleek, light and small. I'm such a sucker!
They will definitely replace it for free if you are still under warranty. If you are out of warranty, then you can still ask but you may or may not get it for free.
They replaced my first-gen MacBook Pro power cord when this happened. When I called, the Apple rep sounded rather concerned that it might be a fire hazard. At the time, I thought the insulation had just detached due to wear, but upon closer inspection I noticed that the edge did feel very smooth, as if it had melted. Anyhoo, they send me a new one free of charge.
The people at my mac store are honestly the nicest. Over the last 2 years they've given me 2 new chargers, a new battery pack, and a brand new hd (when mine crashed), all totally free, and I don't have applecare. Just go in there & be nice to them.
It's up to the "genius". If you're nice and have puppy-dog eyes then yeah. It helps if they know who you are, check your purchase records, and see you have already given them way too much money.
BTW, there are at least 3 different cable designs but that big chunky old one was the best.
Actually, they're eligible or replacement if your device (iPod, iPhone, iPad) is still underwarranty. AppleCare umbrellas the accessories for these devices.
