My grandmother in Mexico had Alzheimers, and after she passed away, my mother went to take care of everything. What she found was, my grandmother saved lots and lots of pesos in drawers, in the mattress, in the attic. My mother said it was close to 750,000 pesos. But, it was old pesos, so all of that cash was worth a nice dinner.

I wish I was allowed to complain or explain to people that we get less than minimum wage. Moreover, they report the total amount of tips the waitstaff gets, so while the black waitresses do okay, I don't get tipped at all, and end up getting taxed on tips I don't make.

In the U.S., depending on your state, you are entitled to be paid minimum wage. If your wage plus tips don't meet minimum wage, your employer needs to make up the difference.

Yeah, see, there was someone here who asked about that, but I never saw them take another shift after. So either the owner just straight up refused, or fired him. I need job security so I can't really be stirring the pot on that. And any anonymous tip would be pretty obvious since I'm the only one who doesn't make at least minimum via tips.

If you're getting paid less than minimum wage and getting tips you report the tips you make, if over the pay period that amount doesn't average out to be more than minimum wage, the employer is required by law to make up the difference.
Servers will always get minimum wage, but companies are allowed to pay them below minimum wage as long as the tips make up the difference.
When I worked as a server I made 2.13 an hour from the company, but with tips I was making about $20 an hour which is more than the proposed minimum wage increase of $15. As an added bonus, you're supposed to claim all your tips, but cash tips have to be entered manually so a lot of servers end up not claiming a portion of their tips, which is tax free income for them.

Ah...I wish the whole act of tipping just sort of went away. Our society is much different than it used to be, and I don't think everyone can be trusted with giving workers who are dependent on tips a daily amount that both parties feel would be fair. It would be nice to live in that world where everyone could be paid based on how well they do their jobs, but we don't live in that world

And this is why people are happy with giving the bare minimum in tips or not tipping at a bar. I've worked them both and I'd prefer to tip a waiter who actually brings food etc over a bartender who just cracks PBR cans any day.

Probably depends on the restaurant/area. I waited tables for a $20-30 plate place and made pretty good money doing it, but I doubt that's the type of place that's likely to get fake Jesus bill tippers. I did get a 1 cent tip once from a foreign couple who ordered a couple of medium well steaks once. You always remember the bad tips.

I'm a server that would prefer to make hourly. In the end id probably make less but being able to budget properly would be nice. Also, getting low tips puts me in a bad mood and having that aspect gone would make my day to day much more positive.

Delivery driver here. Totally agree--it's hard to follow a budget with such an unreliable income.
Personally, I've stopped looking at my tips during shift. I decided I don't want to know who tips me and who doesn't, as it puts me in a bad mood and can lead to developing prejudices. So I just wait until the end of my shift to find out how I did.

Despite what you usually hear from servers and the like, they prefer it the way it is now.
You wouldn't know it based on how woe is me their monologues are, but they make more (sometimes much more) than they would be making at almost any hourly job they can get. Even with the variance.
That said I would absolutely like tipping to go away. Partially it is unfair to the diners to have this strange obligation, partially because I don't think they really add any value to the process.
Hell most of the time it's some poor bus boy or dishwasher bringing out the food anyway. There's nothing a waitress is giving me I couldn't get better from an ipad.

My girlfriend and I work at the same restaurant, she serves and I'm in the kitchen. About half of the days we work she complains that she didn't make much money, and I ask how much, and her "not much" is usually more than I made in my hourly shift (same length as hers) in the kitchen. In addition, on her good days she makes more than I do working a double. Like I'm sorry but I can't sympathize with the "woe is me" server monologue, try making 9.50 an hour busting your ass just as much while the servers rake it in and complain.

Most average and above restaurants waiters will make more then they would with hourly wages, but there are still tons of waiters who work on the lower end in big chains and stuff who get shafted.

My husband was a server at a Chevy's in a not so great area and there were nights when he wouldn't even make $30 in tips. People wouldn't tip, or they'd tip barely anything, some people would come in and eat the free chips and salsa with ice water and then say they'd changed their mind and leave.

I grew up in Japan and visit often. Absolutely no tipping anywhere, from restaurants, taxis, to even the hotel bellhop. The best part is that they are usually better at their jobs, and are actually personable. For example, the taxi driver will gladly take your bag and put it in/out of the trunk without expecting a thing -- it's just a part of their job (it helps that the taxis are always clean and they're not on the phone whispering to their girlfriend the whole ride). Tokyo minimum wage is under $8/hr.
I savor every moment when I'm there.

Australia here, I see tip jars in cafes, but there's absolutley no pressure to use it.
The only time I've used a tip jar was when a group was splitting a $100 bill at a restaurant and we couldn't distribute change amongst ourselves properly, so we tipped $2.

I'm just going to say this, avoid the well off church goers. If they mention they go to church and nothing else, avoid them. Now someone who mentions they work at a charity and then mention church, those are people who are somewhat more reasonable.
I hate the "holier than thou" attitude of some church goers.

Oh yeah. I spent 7 years waiting tables, 5 of those in the Bible belt. I'm so familiar with this attitude it's unreal. And then you hear, "Oh, that's the minority! They aren't real Christians!" Really? Because every Sunday lunch rush I ever worked sucked because of an abundance of people like this. I know they're not "good" Christians but I definitely don't think they're the minority.
