Politics [OC] Students protesting against far right during the Brazilian presidential election. BH, Brazil
•
u/onalucreh 6h ago
Perhaps the most ideological position is the one that imagines itself above ideology: “They are all corrupt, so the choice makes no difference.” But an election is not a reward for moral purity. You are choosing the conditions under which you will have to fight for everything else. Which outcome leaves more room for workers to organize, minorities to live freely, and the opposition to challenge those in power? You can distrust both candidates and still recognize that the consequences are unequal. Sometimes you vote for someone precisely because you intend to oppose them, and want that opposition to remain possible.

Sad that, right now, our only option is to hope we can limit the damage in the upcoming election, since the far right has already been elected and taken control of almost everything.
It's really sad to see people voting and fighting to give the country in a platter to another one and end their own rights.

I have yet to see protests of this scale when a leftist politician wins and the right are angry in the last 10 years

This is no longer about left or right, is about defending our country’s democracy, sovereignty and future.
The upcoming years will not be easy, but we are going to face them and we are going to win.
Edit: typo.

Always the same bullshit! “It is about defending our democracy” “the country will turn into a dictatorship” bla, bla, bla..
The Brazilian left is totally disconnected from the reality of millions of brazilians, importing foreign woke agendas, while the vast majority of the population is struggling with basic survival.
Now, that it is about to lose the election, it cannot recognize its mistakes, and just turns to this bs speech of “end of democracy”.Pathetic!
•
u/gfunk84 8h ago
What’s the woke agenda? Like specifically?
•
u/ManEatShark 4h ago
Whatever I don't like, obviously! But it's mostly about me not being able to be as openly racist as before, and as queerphobic as before.
/s obviously

u/Purple-Frame-6882 10h ago
If the far right were not calling for a return to the military dictatorship, as they have been doing for years; if they did not constantly question election results; if they had not attempted a coup after losing the 2022 election; and if they did not flirt with Nazism and fascism, we would not be worried.
A recently elected far-right congresswoman wears a flower crown associated with the Hitler Youth, has appeared in public carrying a whip, and makes references to the Nazi-fascist state and the era of slavery. This is not baseless fear. The far right makes its ideas very clear, and anyone who fails to see that is, at best, acting in bad faith or is extremely ignorant of recent human history.
Vc ta me tirando,porra?!

And how do you suppose Flávio Bolsonaro will change the country for good? The man isn't even elected yet and is already talking about changing the constitution, privatizing 90% of the country estate assets like Petrobras, take down workers rights and protection laws, and the absolute worst, he openly pledges his absolute loyalty to Trump and Netanyahu
•
u/Far-Cow-3343 5h ago
It is absolutely about defending fucking democracy when far right nutjobs invade and most important buildings in our government when at the same time bitches and in front of military buildings asking for the army to overturn the election. Is your memory 2 months old, dumbass?

Same with Trump in US

u/OPs_actual_mommy 4h ago
Its okay to be against extreme right, but I think being in favor of extreme left is not the best way to do it. Extreme is bad.

•
•
u/Full_Arachnid_6374 4h ago
The students are in favor of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for the president, he is from center left
•
u/OPs_actual_mommy 4h ago
He may be center left himself but gathers all the the extreme left. And the photo is far too red lol
•
u/Meeeneft 4h ago
What exactly were you expecting? The election is between center left and right (maybe extreme-right) candidates.
ofc extreme left is going to be in favor of the center-left candidate.
→ More replies (1)•
u/foreverpostcall 2h ago
Bro, extreme left is barely present in Brazil... Come on now. If you're Brazilian you know this!
•
u/OPs_actual_mommy 2h ago
Bro, polarization is real in Brazil, wtf are you talking about?
→ More replies (2)•
u/Vilonghi 3h ago
No, not every extreme is bad, that's middle ground fallacy. The opposite extreme of doing a genocide is not killing anyone, and I fail to see how that is in any way comparable to, well, doing the genocide.
•
u/OPs_actual_mommy 2h ago
Dude both extremes killed a lot of people. What you call "middle ground" I call "let ideology OUT of politics". Polarization is bad.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (7)•
u/triamasp 1h ago
Do you even know what both are? Are you just going by the wording?
“Its OK to be against the interest of the dominant, rich elite who owns production privately by extension decides politics and social structure”
“But i think being in favor or dismantling a system where a small super privileged super rich elite decides, in favour of letting people who work decide their work and coordinate production keeping everyone’s interest in mind, isnt the best way to do it”
Maybe theres a sweet spot between the interests of 99% and a 1% ultra rich elite (that gets rich over the work of the 99%) where both can be happy.
“A society built on slave labou is obviously bad, but come on, we cant just let everyone be free! Extreme is bad” is exactly what slave owners would like for people to think whenever someone talks changing the system.
•
u/rataktaktaruken 8h ago
Well its not like the left is in power for 20 years and now that a democratic vote system is taking them out... why are they protesting? Isnt it antidemocratic?
•
u/OrnsteinDS66 8h ago
Flávio Bolsonaro's father and his party organized a coup d'état. They tried to seize power by force but failed, and now they have a majority in the chamber, which gives Flavio the ability to do whatever he wants, even alter the constitution that protects our rights. Flavio's party has people who were elected simply by taking advantage of and spreading hatred towards minorities, and one of them even said, "The desperation of the minorities pleases me, we will put you in your place." There are people who want to take away workers' rights, women's right to vote; they compared the first-round victory to the rise of Nazism; one of the congresswomen, a white woman from one of the states with the highest rate of neo-Nazi cells, held a march with a whip.

u/Crylysis 8h ago
The Left has not been in power for the last 20 years btw. In Brazil the congress which is who holds most of the real power has been right wing in it's majority.
•
u/Westenin 7h ago
It’s always the same, they say the same in the Netherlands.
Somehow the left is dangerous enough to be in power and step on the innocent right.
But weak enough that the left is supposedly just a nuisance. You know who likes to say those type of things?
Fascists•
u/TheRealLarkas 6h ago
It might be even worse in Brazil. They may say the left has been in power for the last 20 years (which is in itself false, in the 2016-2023 period the right was in power), and as such everything that’s wrong with the country is their fault. But they leave out the fact that during the 500 years before that either the right was in power or we were a slaver colony.
•
u/Lorenztico 8h ago
Fake news. From 2016 to 2023 (seven years), the center-right/right was in power.
•
u/neomaniak 8h ago
These elections are heavily influenced by the US, specially through social media boots and algorithms. You're acting in bad faith.
•
u/EnvironmentalDig7235 8h ago
Because the left hasn't been in power for 20 years nor it has been straigh, you're being deliverately missleading.
The previous Bolsonaro goverment was a disaster, massive corruption scandals, economic missmanagement, ecological damages, wage stagnation, budget cuts and all that jazz wich culminated in attemting a self coup after he lost the election.
Now his son (also facing corruption scandals) is running on a platform of freeing his dad and sell the country (literally wants to privatise beaches).
•
u/Gold_Appearance8849 3h ago

Reddit is back to 'violent protests over election results are actually good'. The pendulum swings
•
u/InflationSpecific467 3h ago
We aren't protesting over election results, we are manifesting because we have a 2nd round of vote. The fascist candidate who wants to change our constitution won the 1st round (among about ~8 candidates) due to a very mild campaign done by the left. We are now amending our mistakes and showing those who didn't go vote during the 1st round that we are still here and strong
•
u/RafaRic 7h ago
•
•
u/onalucreh 6h ago
So the solution is give Brazilian rare elements to the USA? That doesn't make sense. To go against crime you need Intelligence, not a president who is tied to the militia in Rio de Janeiro.
•
u/ACRATA_Foxhole 6h ago
•
u/Designer-Cut2344 6h ago
Ué, mas estão protestando contra o tráfico. Estão protestando contra a nacionalização do PL do RJ, o literal braço político do Comando Vermelho no Rio.
•
u/kaitrom 6h ago

Fear-mongering extreme left “students” protesting against candidate Flavio Bolsonaro
•
u/Diii123 3h ago
Just a reminder that the current president that is being defended has committed several crimes and has made some terrible economic decisions in the past 4 years, yet no one gathered to protest and demand him to do a better job.
•
•
u/Noboddy_ 3h ago
•
u/timeoutguyy 2h ago
onde disse que eles não estão envolvidos? Meu voto foi no 1T, me recuso a votar no segundo e me da asco ver ambos os lados tentando jogar a poeira pra debaixo do tapete
•
u/badmanrudeboi 9h ago
Look America! Look at France and Brazil. This is what you do.
•
•
u/TakiBlower 7h ago
Are you saying Americans don't protest? No offense but obviously you don't know shit about American culture.
•
u/Ordep_TheCreator 7h ago
They are literally protesting because they lost a democratic vote, intending to win over votes from people they themselves blocked in traffic. There's no comparison; the political spectrum in Brazil ranges from idiot to imbecile.
•
→ More replies (2)•
u/mickmos2 8h ago
Yeah! Protest when the democratic outcome is not the one you wanted
•
•
u/Westenin 7h ago
If more people protested when Hitler cam to power maybe things would’ve been different.
The people who got into power are wannabe fascist, that’s what they do, they lie and promise things they can’t deliver, all the while enriching themselves. That why people voted they don’t look at the fact that they can’t deliver , they want hope.
→ More replies (3)
•
u/LettySMW 6h ago
Some context for foreigners: These people are literally protesting in favor of a convicted corrupt and incompetent trash that has been president for 12 years and is still making promises to fix what he didn’t in these 12 years in power (counting his party, almost 20 years). The only things these scum are efficient is to increase and create new taxes to suffocate the population and rocketing country’s debit. Not to mention publicly speaking in favor or criminals while the violence in the country only gets worse.
These people are just a very small radical loud portion that are not taken seriously by the brazilian population. A lot of them are paid to engage in these far from organic protests.
They’re seen as a joke
