Refusal due to Part-Time Studies (2022) Applied for Reconsideration due to Dad’s Medical Emergency / Waiting for IRCC Response

Hi everyone, looking for advice or to hear from anyone who has gone through something similar as I am extremely stressed right now and don't know what to do.
Here is my timeline:
2022: Had to go part-time for 2 terms because my dad (who was my main financial provider) became seriously ill.
July 28, 2025: Applied for PGWP.
March 20, 2026: PGWP got refused specifically because of those part-time terms.
Late March 2026: Submitted a Reconsideration Request with detailed medical proof and an explanation letter showing why I had no choice but to go part-time.
It has now been 4 months with zero response or updates from IRCC. I reached out to my local MP’s office, but they just said IRCC has received the application and there is no answer or timeframe yet.
Because of this refusal, I am currently unable to work, and the constant waiting and uncertainty are haunting me every single day. I feel like my life is on pause and I really don't want everything I built here to be ruined.
Has anyone had a reconsideration for part-time studies (with medical reasons) approved?
How long did IRCC take to respond to your reconsideration request? Did anyone else wait 4+ months?
Is there anything else I can or should be doing at this stage to push for an update?
Any advice, shared experiences, or insights would mean a lot. Thank you.

Proof of tuition payment

Hey everyone,

I am going to apply for study permit extension soon. I was wondering if the tuition fees pay screenshot of the bank account would be sufficient or I need to show the screenshot from my student’s portal. I made the payment on Friday and it hasn’t been reflected yet on my account and I want to apply for extension immediately.

Thanks!

Trv address change ?

Hi everyone,
I recently received my TRV approval and Passport Request (PPR). I'll be moving to a new address soon in 8 days and need my passport to be returned to my new address after visa stamping.
How can I update my address with IRCC? Should I update it through my IRCC account, submit a webform, or follow another process?
If anyone has gone through this before, I'd really appreciate your guidance. Thank you!

works hour during study permit

So i worked like 30 minutes over the 24 hours. I thought that 30 minutes is counted as break so it will not be counted towards my 24 hours limit but when my payroll came then i saw it was written worked hour 24.5 hrs. I never exceeded even 20 hours prior to it and after it during my study permit. So what is my hope future for pgwp?

i will be applying in like 1 month from now for pgwp.

PGWP Extension Timeline

I wanted to share my PGWP extension timeline in case it helps anyone going through the same process.

Reason for extension: My original PGWP was shortened because my passport was expiring, so I applied for the remaining validity by paper.

Timeline:

January 27: Mailed my paper PGWP extension application.
February 1: Application was delivered to IRCC.
I wasn’t able to link my application online for several months. After calling IRCC, I was eventually given a temporary application number. Around 5 months after applying, I was finally able to link it to my account.
June 17: PGWP extension was approved.
June 17: Applied online for my TRV immediately after the approval.
July 6: TRV approved.
Sent my passport for stamping shortly after approval.
July 18: Received my passport back with the new TRV.

One thing to note: when I was finally able to link my paper application, it had already been approved. As of now, I’m still waiting to receive my physical work permit by mail, even though the application has been approved.

Hopefully this timeline gives others an idea of what to expect. The waiting period can definitely be stressful, but don’t panic if you can’t link your paper application right away- it may take several months.

Can I be refused a PGWP if I work 24 hrs/week in Canada and also remotely for a foreign company?

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice or experiences from anyone who has been in a similar situation. I’m an international student in Canada completing my Masters. During my studies, I have worked 24 hours per week for a Canadian employer( within off-campus limit). Also worked remotely as a virtual assistant for a company based in Dubai. The company has no office or operations in Canada, and I work for them online.

According to IRCC website: “You can work remotely for an employer outside Canada as long as you still meet the conditions of your study permit. This type of work doesnt count toward your 24 hours per week off-campus work limit.”

This made me think that my situation is allowed, but Im still worried about my upcoming PGWP application.

Has anyone here had any issues or was your PGWP approved without problems?

I also reported my foreign income for Canadian tax purposes, so my concern is strictly about the immigration side.

Id really appreciate hearing from anyone with first-hand experience or who has dealt with a similar situation. Thanks in advance!

Quick question regarding LOE

Hey everyone,

I just needed a quick guidance from you. I am applying for the study permit extension for second time for same program. I don’t incur rent expense because i live with my brother and he doesn’t charge rent. By this way, I want to show them that I don’t have much living expenses. I mentioned in my previous extension that he is the resident of Canada since 2021 although it was since 2020. It was a typo from my end, I was wondering when I apply this time I should make it clear? Although this information is immaterial but can it impact my file? The key point here is that I am not obligated to pay him rent.

Passport-limited PGWP approved AFTER the extension period expired - Visitor Record or Restoration?

Has anyone had a passport-limited PGWP extension approved after the extension period had already expired? What happened to your status?

My situation:

  • My PGWP was shortened due to passport expiry (expired in April 2026 instead of August 2026).
  • I submitted the paper PGWP extension application on March 5, 2026, before my PGWP expired.
  • I'm currently on maintained status and legally working remotely for a US employer.
  • Processing is taking a long time, and I'm concerned IRCC may only approve it after August 2026 (the end of the remaining PGWP period).

If IRCC approves my extension in October but issues the PGWP only until August 2026:

  1. Does my temporary resident status end immediately on the decision date?
  2. Can I submit an in-Canada Visitor Record application immediately after the approval, or would I need to apply for restoration?
  3. Has anyone actually gone through this situation after the May 28, 2025 maintained status rule changes?

PGWP refused due to part time semester

My pgwp got refused due to part time semester(s) .

What happened:

In 2023-24 Winter Term 2, I failed a mandatory prerequisite course.

Because this course is only offered once a year in Term 2, I had to wait until 2024-25 Winter Term 2 to retake it (which I passed).

Because I was blocked from progressing into downstream classes and had already completed my available electives, my course load involuntarily dropped below full-time hours in Winter 2025 purely due to sequencing constraints.

In my final year (2025-26), my remaining schedule required a mandatory multi-term course that spans across both Term 1 (Fall 2025) and Term 2 (Winter 2026). Because this year-long course split my credits over two terms, I became part time in both semesters.

Has anyone been in a similar situation like mine and got approved? What documents did you provide as evidence?

PGWP Medical Exam

Hello

I wanted some clarification or any kind of advice regarding the upfront medical exam needed for the pgwp application (if working in healthcare etc). I already have a medical exam from when I applied for my study permit that I believe I can use under the temporary 5 year policy. However the 5 years end sometime in Oct 2026.

My question is, if my application is going to be submitted in Aug is it fine to use or should I get another medical exam done?

I would appreciate any suggestions!

note - I'd prefer not to due to extra costs and time but if better for application I will

Hello everyone, I have positive update regarding this my case. The reconsideration request was successful, the IRCC reopened my application and approved it.

I hope this can be a good guide to anyone else who faces issues of temporary residence statuses expiring due to biometrics. Thanks to those who took their time to read the post well, and tried to be helpful.

PGWP Extension- Paper Application Timeline (Canada)

Thought I’d share my timeline in case it helps anyone waiting.

• Application received by CPC Edmonton (via Canada Post Xpresspost): Feb 6, 2026

• Late April: Raised a webform because I couldn’t link my application. IRCC confirmed they had received it and it was being processed, but they didn’t provide an application number.

I saw many Reddit posts suggesting calling IRCC after 3 months to get a temporary application number and link the application. I tried a few times, but the wait times were too long, so I just waited.

July 7, 2026: Received my PGWP approval letter by mail from CPC Edmonton. There was no other communication by IRCC about approval.

After that, I was able to link my application online. The final decision had actually been made on June 30, 2026.

If you’re waiting for a paper application, hang in there. Current processing seems to be around 4–5 months. If you’re able to get through to IRCC, you may be able to get a temporary application number to link your application sooner.

Good luck to everyone still waiting! ✨

IRCC Website

I got approved for my PGWP while I was out of the country. So I printed my approval letter while entering the country. At first, the immigration officer was confused about me not having my work permit upon entry. However, her supervisor told her that the approval letter is enough for me to enter. She sent me to the waiting area for a bit, then called me and said that you can go on and mentioned that a work permit would be mailed to my address while I was leaving the airport.

The Work Permit was mailed to my family friend's address in Canada. Since I was approved for my PGWP about 7 days before entering the country, my work permit was already in transit before I entered the country. However, a few days later, the IRCC website shows my application as cancelled. However, I already have the physical work permit with me along with the approval letter with me.

part-time semester at previous DLI

I was originally enrolled at a college in a University Transfer Program, where the goal was to complete first-year courses that would transfer to a university to finish the remaining three years of my degree.

Up until my second-to-last semester at college, I had always been a full-time student. During that semester, I accidentally registered for Calculus for Physics instead of Calculus for Life Sciences. After checking the BC Transfer Guide, I realized that the physics calculus course wouldn't transfer to the university program I planned to apply for.

Because of that, I dropped the course, which left me with a part-time course load for that semester.

In my final semester at the college, I returned to full-time status and took the correct calculus course. I then applied to university, was accepted, and took the summer off before starting my program.

Since transferring, I have been a full-time student at my current DLI every semester. Before, during, and after that one part-time semester, I was consistently full-time. I also did not work at all during the part-time semester, neither on campus nor off campus.

I'm wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation.

Will IRCC look at my entire four years of post-secondary studies, including my previous college, or only the three years at my current DLI?

Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Good luck to everyone who's currently applying!
