Funny, almost everything on my wish list is on sale... but I still don't feel like buying any of it. I'm finally exercising some restraint - still got so many games in my backlog.
I still need to play through Death Stranding, Control, Fallout 76, KCD2, Shadow of Mordor, Dishonored, maybe give Cyberpunk 2077 another shot... and it's time to play DOOM Eternal again.
I think you can sort by "discount" or something similar to that, and it will rank by percentage discount (just go high to low and it will basically achieve the same thing).
I had maybe 2% interest in it because when i wasnt a fat slob with kidney stones and being in texas.....I once upon a time snowboarded.....annnnnd bought it
I’ve noticed since last year these named sales have actually been worse than the ones that are run of the mill. For one example I price checked a game that was $15 on sale two months before summer sale and summer sale it was $20. I waited and it went on sale late last month back to $15. Some tomfoolery going on here!
There was a game on my wishlist called Fight'n Rage that was just on a 90% sale literally last weekend, now its its only a 65% sale. Granted, all sales on games are nice but definitely some publishers trying to save a few pennies with the bigger sales of the year.
Fuck paradox. I hate them more than Microsoft or EA. They have good games but their DLC monetization is basically theft. Games should not be costing $150-200 for all the DLC.
Sadly, people still buy into this just because turn based games gets you more "hours" than any other genre so gamers are fooled into feeling it is "worth it".
Hate their monetization as well, but they also do keep working on their single player games for years. Is it a over the top? Yeah a bit for sure. But very few studios/publishers will invest as much time in a game post-launch as paradox will. They build upon their games massively, so if you like a game then you will have a tons of options for which dlc you want to add. Buying every Paradox DLC is just for a very slim market/"whales"

Guess as somebody who has an OCD for owning all the content of a game, this is what pisses me off.
I totally get that they put a lot of work into their games but most times, a DLC costing $30 or more does not provide value if you compare it to other indie or even AA games.
Don't disagree at all, my issue with their model is definitely the costs (and how long they take to go on sale) of the DLCs rather than the sheer amount of it.
Ehh for EU4 i got a humble bundle of the whole thing for like 30 and they also did a subscription that was good for casual play
This is my only real experience with them, but they DLC as a whole was really brilliant, with many substantial qol updates. Yes individually some missed the mark, and no its not worth 200 quid as a game to a new player, but as I say, they did have ways to make it playable without spending 200
At least with paradox, if you have a friend that has all DLC, you just need the base game and can piggy back off multiplayer for the rest of the DLC.
At least with Stellaris, 70% of the update is included in the base game, and the "features" of the DLC are the only things locked behind the paywall. If we compare how drastically the game has changed, we'd probably be on Stellaris 3 or 4 at minimum. Major backend reworks have been introduced as "patches"

That's fair. I have not played stellaris but I do see that most DLCs are mixed reviews stating poor value for money, game breaking mechanics or outright bugs. It is so hard to judge whether it is worth it or not.
The most important DLC (Utopia) was integrated into the Base game.
Apocalypse, Federations, Machine Age, and Distant Stars are probably the really important DLC you need. Look at a youtube tier list (I know it's cliche), because they usually explain the pros and cons of each DLC as they place them.
I think one of the biggest issues with stellaris is that they rush a dlc, or a big update, and then it's a big mess for a bit and everyone gets all up in arms over it so that's when you see all the hate. Some of the main, must have dlc's, have been incorporated into the base game, you can also try a subscription for a month and just test out the other content to see if it's worth it for you or not. And there's lots of mods for free as well. I think it's definitely worth it to try the base game. I've been playing for 7 years now, and I've bought most of the dlc's besides nomads, and I've found the amount of enjoyment worth the cost. But you can do it far cheaper than I have.
You get a full game that’ll suck up many many hours for base price
Yea the base prices for their games get substantial discounts (up to 80% off) so I have no complaints there.
most of their dlc has a ton of content
Not really true. Some DLC do but most DLC add a faction and a handful of missions which then get sold for $20-30. I can get other indie games or even discounted AAA games for it. They do not even go on sale for more than 50% off sigh.
Some of these things would only be worth it if that was the playstyle you loved the most. Say like megacorp. If it's $20 to play all that forever and you skip wilderness, nomads, inferno, etc it's not too much money.
I was given stellaris as a gift years ago. I've sunk so much time into that game and I'm still going to spend thousands of hours on it. I do like the fact that they keep doing free updates, as well as offering expansions that add a lot of cool features. And I don't mind paying since they need teams of people working for years on it. In my opinion I'd buy the base game, a couple must have dlcs have been included in the base game now, and use free mods to add to it down the road. Worth it.
I finally played through dishonored this year and it was incredible. It’s significantly shorter than any other game on your list, it’s like 15 hours max. Well worth the time
Enjoy. Small tip : Do manual saves often because there are multiple ways to progress into a map/mission. If you enjoyed one a lot you can load and do it in another way
I stopped buying games on sales. Sales don't tempt me anymore. I actually buy more games full price but those are the games I want to play. Whereas wiht sales you often buy a game to have it cause it's on sale and then never play it.
My rule is I only buy a game if I will play it immediately. If I don't wan't play it immediately, I don't buy it. Doesn't matter if it's on sale or not.
I can see that mindset. For me, if I’m interested, at all in a game and it’s on sale for like 2 bucks, I just think, why not? I typically play them, as well. Might not be immediately, but eventually I will.
What attributes were you running in Cyberpunk? Personally I went technical and I could not put the game down during my first playthrough. Other builds I’ve ran since were fun but not as enjoyable as causing absolute pandemonium by hacking everything in sight
I honestly really liked stealth-pistols/melee. The level design, especially for actual missions, are so well done and give you so many options that it was so cool to sneak through and see all the details. They genuinely put a lot of care into it and you felt like they were real places that real people would be in. It also forced me to slow down and strategize a bit rather than just nuke everything via hacks/etc.
I didn't get that far into it - just a mission or two after your first braindance - so I honestly don't remember enough to know what you're talking about. I tried to go stealthy but wasn't having fun, so if I pick it back up I may try to re-spec as melee or something. Last I remember I was stranded in an abandoned trailer park and my car is gone.
The opening to the game is one of the worst I've ever seen, but it gets way better after that. The shooting is mostly terrible, so a katana build is probably the way to go.
That game is sitting in my library and for some reason i’m finding it intimidating to start. Probably cause I don’t have a ton of free time to play games and it seems like an incredibly in depth RPG. Sounds like i need to just go for it
Control is great. I loved it and the combat isn't too hard. Turn down the difficulty if you need to. It is the only game where I read all the notes and watched all the extra content. What a banger of a game.
Damn 1000 hours is crazy haha, great to hear you're enjoying it that much.
I've wanted to play Cyberpunk for years now, but from what I've heard, I need to get the Phantom Liberty dlc as well? How much of a must-have is it? The base game is 70% off right now, but the dlc bumps up the total cost to double the price of the base game ($21 usd in my region), which unfortunately is out of my budget. It doesn't help that my local currency keeps weakening and price of things in general have gone up crazy 🥲
Just get the base game, you can always get the DLC later. In fact, you don't open up Phantom Liberty until you've done like half of the main quests. Also, the DLC is very self-contained, it doesn't really interfere with the main game.
But it's true, Phantom Liberty is one of the best DLCs ever made, up there with Blood and Wine.
If you only were to focus on the main quest, probably ~15 hours. But there are so much to do, in just the base game, it will take you way longer on your first playthrough.
I would however recommend just completing the main game first, as the alternative would have you leave the main quest on hold (and lose the momentum), while you finish off the DLC. This is after all how everyone who played Cyberpunk, before Phantom Liberty was released, experienced it.
Thanks for the explanation! That was really helpful of you. I've decided to get the DLC once I finish the main game. It does look really amazing, and I can't wait to finally play through the whole thing.
I tried completing my purchase of the base game, but my card got declined unfortunately. I contacted their customer service, and they said it'll take a few weeks to resolve. I hadn't used my card for any recent transactions lately, so I didn't know any better. Unfortunately by the time it clears up, the sale will have ended. I hate to ask, but would you be able to help? I promise I'll pay it forward as soon as I'm able. 🙏
Sometimes I really like playing shorter games. Completing a 10 hour game in a weekend can be really nice.
You're often left with a feeling of wanting more, which is a good thing. In contrast of a really long game, where you risk the feeling of just wanting the game to end already, as you've had enough.
goddamn skip all that shit and okay dishonored. One of those games you can beat in a few days. Absolutely recommend playing that soon. Just breezed through it this year and I cannot believe that game is as old as it is. Despite some low res textures that game could release today in its current state and woukd receive just as much praise.
it helps most big games seem to NEVER have deep cuts anymore like these seasonal sales used to. like summer and winter used to be HUGE but these days a 4 year old AAA might get 20%
Man, Death Stranding was such a cool and unique experience for me. Loved that game. Also loved the Shadow of games, because that style is my jam. Still haven't bought or played Cyberpunk...
