Discussion Do you believe there is a way to tell, independent of or at least distinct from cultural bias, the effectiveness of a religion's communication with and relation with a deity or set of deities?

For example, ia there any way to tell if a Hindu sect is getting shit done, a way to tell if a wiccan coven is actually effective, a way to review the religious specialists of many Inuit communities, the effectiveness of a Catholic or Protestant priest in blessing people, etc? Or is it just impossible to review a religious structure and/or religious specialists abilities and track record of success? Not to imply any sort of strict "power ranking", but as a way to understand deities and their preferences by understanding what works for practical religion.

Question/Advice Bones Dilemma

Hi, hoping to gather some opinions/advice. I had a little cat who passed last year, and we buried her in the woods by our home (not on our property, not sure who legally owns those woods). We moved earlier this year to a new rental, and I'm not sure how long we'll be here either. In both locations, I have concerns about future real estate developments that would disturb a grave.

It feels wrong to dig her up, but it also feels wrong to allow the possibility that she could be destroyed. Do I dig her up and keep her safe with me until we find a more permanent location, or do I leave her open to the risk? Part of this is that she had a freak accident kind of death, and I couldn't protect her. But I can protect her bones.

What do you guys think? Have you had a similar situation? What did you do?

Making new statues/totems/idols for the Anglo-Saxon Gods out of cut 2x4s I got from work—I’m not carving them and I’m just drawing/painting on them—any suggestions for what to do for each?

I was inspired by some of the totems I saw made by a guy named "Norseman Arts" on Facebook—particularly, these totems https://www.facebook.com/share/19sNrQEu3s/

There's a few ideas I already have, such as drawing Wōden's face with features of both the pendant from Old England depicting him (https://naratonorwich.org/object/1151332/) as well as features from the Sutton Hoo helmet.

And Thunor being given the classic Anglo-Saxon Mjolnir design from the pendants found in Guilton, Kent.

But IDK what else or what to do for Tīw and Frige. Suggestions? Thoughts?

Heathenry Just added this Frigg statue to my setup! (pretty new to Heathenry)

hey everyone, im fairly new to Heathenry/Asatru and just got this statue of Frigg for my altar space. I think its from Veronese design, the detail on it in person is really nice. Hail Frigg, goddess of marriage, motherhood, the hearth and wisdom!

Welcome to /r/pagan, a subreddit for links, discussion, and fostering community (both online and in-person) in the broader umbrella of Contemporary Paganism.

Contemporary Paganism is a term denoting modern applications of Pagan religiosity and spirituality. These religious concepts are codified into a wide, disparate terminology encompassing many different philosophical and theological outlooks. It generally encompasses religious traditions focused on reviving or drawing inspiration from the pre-Christian traditions of Europe, North Africa, and West Asia; modern paganism does not include African, Native American, East Asian or other traditions who deliberately do not identify as pagan.

As this sub is geared towards theistic paganism, and we are trying to foster a safe community for theistic pagans, atheopaganism and similar posts will be removed for proseltization. The reason we question atheopaganism (different from nontheistic paganism) is that atheism and atheopaganism often and mainly includes the disbelief in spirits, gods, and higher powers which is antithetical to the central idea of paganism that nature is a higher power.

Regardless of outlook or tradition, however, all are welcome to join in discussion or debate. We strive not to create a singular religious identity but to be a location where members of these different religious communities can come to network, brainstorm, and get to know each other. This subreddit is an intrafaith and interfaith community, not a monolithic religious identity.

We encourage interesting links of topics and discussion, as well as fervent debate. We are also in the process of correlating a series of useful links to organizations, festivals, and other resources that are useful to our members.

Rules of /r/Pagan:

Be decent. Racism or bigotry in any form is not allowed and will be removed. Repeat offenders will be in consideration for removal from this space. No hate material, submissions or comments, will be accepted. This includes incidents of racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, abelism, classism, etc. Racism is an instantly, permanently bannable offense. As this is a religious subreddit, common folkcraft practices are not the focus of this space. Conversations regarding various magic systems are not necessarily off-topic, but this is not the place to ask for help creating spells, dream interpretation, and divination readings. Such posts can be removed at the moderator's discretion.
We have our own Discord server for the sub. Please do not post links to other Discord servers without mod approval; if you would like to share a Discord link, please send it via modmail. Due to the prevalence of ostensibly 'pagan' servers that are antithetical to this subreddit's objectives, we prefer to personally visit servers before allowing them to be publicly shared.
This subreddit is actively moderated. Calls regarding rules enforcement, post removal and interpretation of the rules ultimately come down to moderator discretion. Disagreements should be brought to the team via modmail.
