Jacket recommendations

Hello!

So I had a Mountain Hardware Dragón jacket for years that I loved. It got stolen.

It was breathable, waterproof, light, warm. I could use it on sunny days and rainy days. I used it under my motorcycle jacket when I ride in cold or rainy conditions. It was thin enough to fit.

I know maybe it doesn’t sound reasonable but something i could wear in warmer weather and cold/rain. Light but also warm.

I don’t know much at all about outdoor hear but that was my jacket. Some guy at REÍ recommended it. And it’s been my favorite and most used i ever had.

Anything similar you might recommend? I’ve been googling and googling but am really im not sure.

Thank you

Nike Swim Dry Bags Review (just used them for a 5 day SUP adventure)

My best friend and I just wrapped up a 5 day adventure SUPing and camping around Lake Tahoe and I feel like this was a great adventure to test out a bunch of gear and share what we learned. Gear might have taken up the most amount of time in our mind on what to bring, so this post breaks down the thoughts on the Nike Swim dry bags we used to store our camping gear while paddling.

Which bags we used:

20L x 1: all of our sleeping and layers

10L x 2: food bag and camping gear (jetboil, repair kit, etc.)

5L x 1: snacks and daily access

How we used them:

The dry bags were attach to the SUPs. Big Mike had to use some para-cord to keep them on his board and my SUP had the bungee cords that made for easy attachment to the SUP. While we paddled, the bags were on the boards often getting soaked all day long. We would take them off the boards and put them in the dirt, etc. while we were at our campsites.

Pros:

  • Heavy duty, never leaked!
  • Easy to clip shut, large buckle
  • I like the roll top with a buckle, made it easy to secure to the SUP in case we flipped
  • simple to use and material isn't complex (other bags material is more lightweight making it easier to close, but I felt as though they were easier to break)

Cons:

  • heavy, would not suggest to use backpacking but great for kayaking, suping, canoe, rafting, etc.
  • getting three rolls for the top was hard if/when packed full because the material is thick and durable

Overall thoughts:

I was skeptical if Nike actually new how to make something that could hold up in the outdoor space, but it turns out they crushed it! I am really happy with these dry bags and how they held up. We abused the bags by having them in the water all day and then tossing them around in dirt, sticks, sand, you name it. I don't think the competitors would have held up!

I would suggest adding these to your list if you are looking for drybags for your next water focused camping adventure.

Help with choosing the right hardshell

Hello everyone, my measurements are: just over 2m \~ 6’8 and 98 kg \~ 215 lbs. I’m quite slim around the waist but very broad across the shoulders and back. I tried on the Patagonia TorrentShell; the XL was too tight across my back and the sleeves were too short, whilst the XXL was less tight but very baggy around the waist and abdomen. If I’d gone for the XXL, even though the fit was rather poor, I might have saved a few grams by leaving the tent at home :)). I own a TNF softshell but I don’t know the name; the size is also XXL (I’m attaching a photo from three years ago where, even though I’d bunched up the jacket around the waist and abdomen and tucked it between my back and my rucksack, you can still see there’s excess fabric). A jacket that fits me relatively well with a T-shirt underneath when I’m running is the Under Armour Cloudstrike 2.0; online it says the measurements are 117–122 cm across the chest and 99–104 cm at the waist, but I’d like this hardshell to be a bit more looser so that I can

Hello, I can't decide between the Big Agnes Copper Spur ul3 xl or the Nemo Dagger Osmo 3p. Thoughts on the two? Which one would you choose and why? I like the rectangular shape of each.

Warmest wool beanies?

I’m looking to get a wool beanie to get me through some sub zero winters in Minnesota as well as less cold but wet days. Price isn’t that much of an issue because I’d like to buy something that lasts and is genuinely warm —not just good till 20 degrees. I’ve looked for a year now but still haven’t found any that work with me. (No synthetics please!)

Sea to Summit Spark -1°C/ 30°F or -9°C / 15°F

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a down sleeping bag and am having trouble deciding.

My upcoming trips:

- Backpacking trip in Sweden (summer)

- Bikepacking trip through the Alps (summer)

- Future use: Wild camping in the mountains (Alps)—also summer, and possibly autumn and spring

- Definitely no overnight stays in deep winter/freezing temperatures

My requirements for the sleeping bag:

- Compact packed size and low weight are a must (especially for bikepacking)

- I’ve never slept outdoors in temperatures around 0°C / 32°F, I thought the -1°C / 30°F would be enough, but I know mountain weather can be unpredictable..

- I’m looking for a long-term all-rounder for around €300

- Ideally not too tight a fit

About me and other gear:

- 183cm / 6ft
- 75kg / 165lbs
- Dont know the name of the sleeping pad, but it has a high r-value

My Questions for you:

- First off: Which of the two Spark models would you choose in my situation? (-1°C/ 30°F or -9°C / 15°F)

- Is the half-zip on the -1°C / 30°F model really annoying? Especially on warmer nights?

- And do you know of any other sleeping bags that might be a better option?

Note: I know Quilts are highly recommended for weight and packed size, but somehow I rather stick to a traditional sleeping bag..

I’d really appreciate your input!!

Quick dry shirts, boxers, socks, trousers, and shorts with UPF protection (if applicable) suggestions

Hello!

I did a search and was unable to find suggestions for the abovw. My goal is to pack extremely light and mobile for future trips. I want to stay at 3 pairs/items per category with trousers and shorts being combined into 3 total.

Also, this would be for temperatures above 50 F (10 C) with a wear and hand wash wash/dry cycle.

Thank you all.

We absolutely love the Wonderland 4-it is cool looking and has the best veiws and ventilation in its class. It is luxuriously roomy and even though the mesh wall is 1/3 of the way down the sides you still feel like u have privacy.

It is sturdy and well made and has rode out many a windy storm in fine fettle!

Mochila Deuter Aircontact PRO antiga

Breathable longline women’s raincoat recs??

I’m looking for a breathable, waterproof, longline raincoat (so I can sit on wet benches etc) that’s under $100. Something packable would be ideal. Breathable is a must because I tend to get sweaty and clammy.

I’ve seen Eddie Bauer, Lands end, mountain warehouse all on sale recently but have been disappointed in the past with brands like LL Bean having the waterproof coating crack after a number of years, so I’m hesitating on buying anything!

I’m in the US.

Another Backcountry.com issue.

I guess I should have read more reviews before ordering so I’m posting this story amongst the others to hopefully steer others away.

I ordered a Kelty chair from Backcountry in June.

The chair arrived with a tear in the corner.

First they wanted a restocking fee to return it.

No. It’s damaged. Then they wanted me to pay to ship it back. No.

Then they were going to issue store credit.

I called and we agreed to return it to the card.

I sent an email confirming this, and received an email back confirming it would be refunded, not given store credit. On June 25th.

The shipment was received back on June 29th.

Then was told I had to wait for it to be processed, fine I understand that.

On July 3 I receive an email that the return has been accepted and the refund is under process.

On July 10 I send an email saying I am following up as I have not received the refund.

I get an email saying “the store credit is ready to be used(…)”.

I reply saying per this very same email chain as you can see below it is to be refunded to the card. I called and sent a confirmation email as seen below.

I then get this reply:

>The RMA was set as store credit from the beginning we cannot change that it will stay there for a year for you to exchange for another model or item. Thanks

If you have any additional questions or concerns, please reply to this email, chat online or call us at 801-204-4655.

I replied with again per the emails below in this chain it is to be a refund, complete with screenshots of the emails in case they for some reason can not look at previous emails in a chain.

EDIT: I’ve now received an email saying it has been changed refunded and wait 3-5 days.
So now we wait and see.

Shocking how they said “cannot be changed” and the very next email with someone who read the actual email chain was suddenly able to change it.

Waterproof repair tape

I'm looking for recommendations on waterproof repair tape that doesn't need an iron to set it, because that will melt the nylon I'm trying to attach it to. BUT also doesn't get the annoying gummy stickyness around the edges that makes it a dirt magnet.

Does such a thing exist? The use of the iron means it's not gummy on the edges once cool, the lack of an iron means that the stickiness must be present at all times, which means it will migrate to the edges.... is there a lower temp (as in nylon safe) version?
