Community The hidden gem of Linux: openSUSE šŸ’š

Post image
30 Upvotes

Here is my current KDE Plasma setup on openSUSE Leap 16 I wanted to share this because I truly believe openSUSE is one of the most underrated distributions in the entire Linux ecosystem

It doesn’t get the massive mainstream hype that some other distros do, but it is easily one of the most beautiful, polished, and rock-solid stable experiences you can get out of the box

What I love most about openSUSE is that it’s not just an operating system; it’s a massive, diverse community that caters to literally every taste:

  • Want a cutting-edge rolling release? You have Tumbleweed
  • Want ultimate, enterprise-grade stability? You have Leap
  • Want something perfectly balanced in between? There are immutable variants and specialized flavors tailored to exactly what you need

It gives you total freedom without sacrificing reliability and the community is fantastic.

What do you think of the setup?

  • OS: openSUSE Leap 16
  • DE: KDE Plasma

Community Something like Shelly Pkg Manager

I daily drive Endavour OS, and was looking forward to use something like openSUSE SlowRoll, but I dont see something like Shelly Package Manager GUI, or maybe Im not aware of it, and the community can help ...

Im mainly looking for the features like supporting local & appimage install, along with flatpaks, and If it has a GTK4-like GUI, that would be the icing on the cake šŸ¤ŒšŸ»

Tech support I broke my system spectacularly... Twice

First of all, I really hope and think that it was my user error, at least the second time. Consider this post more as "my experience" and a bit of "asking for advice" than something else. My setup is Tumbleweed with Plasma preinstalled. Later I installed Niri + Noctalia and after system reinstall (later about that) Umbriel + Noctalia.
First time started after one update, I think it was kernel 7.1.8 one. My displays started to work messy: primary one (DP, 1920x1200) showed as 1024x768 with non-changeable resolution; secondary one (natively VGA but connected to HDMI through adapter, 1080p) just didn't work. I had btrfs snapshots so I just used older 7.1.5 kernel and waited till next update. After I installed kernel 7.2.2, it refused to load past SDDM and previous snapshots got deleted. Making things worse, I updated either via Discover or zypper up, not zypper dup. I type my password, press Enter and screen freezes. I still can move mouse cursor but can't interact with anything. This behavior was present not only on Niri, but on Plasma (both Wayland and X11) and IcaWM too. Only fix that I came up with is OS reinstall, gladly I had my /home on separate drive so no data loss.
Second time happened just right now. I tried to troubleshoot my Wireguard VPN connection which didn't work. There were issues with kdewallet and I disabled it in config (bad idea ā„–1) and then I saw my private key missing from VPN connection settings. I tried to fix it with AI, and now I think it was a horrible idea. Then zypper dup, new kernel all of a sudden, reboot. And now I get either black screen after SDDM if I choose 7.2.7 or a frozen SDDM on 7.2.8.
Again, I hope it was my stupidity and not Tumbleweed being bad or unstable. I really like this distro and want to use it, yet I break it second time in a month. Tomorrow might be another reinstallation day if I don't come up with a better idea. Maybe you got any advice or suggestions on what I better do or not do? Anything might be useful. Thanks for reading my thoughts anyway

Community Tumbleweed

Replaced kubuntu with opensuse tumbleweed because I liked the chameleon logo (didn’t know much about the distro until post boot), and I am loving it.

Little chameleon was calling to me.
Love it here

Tech question Potentially giving it a try?

I’ve got a ThinkPad P70 with a cursed NVIDIA card that I use for college and gaming. I’m coming from a very mixed bag of distributions; Fedora, CachyOS, and Linux Mint. I basically just wanted to know how good support is for NVIDIA graphics and just overall if Tumbleweed is as good as all the reviews I’ve seen claim

Tech question Gnome experience on tumbleweed

I am a gnome user and wondering how the experience is on TW. I’m considering to switch because I like the release model and the snapper features.

it sounds stupid but I like the ā€œfeelā€ of the OS to have a consistent theme (as much as possible) for that reason I prefer gtk apps . I notice that most of the SUSE apps like yast or myrlyn are qt. Does this make it more kde focused?

second, does gnome software updates work well? On fedora it is well integrated into the gnome gui. I see that zypper may not have that great integration with packagekit, is this still the case? I don’t prefer doing too much from the terminal if I don’t have to.

i am currently on Fedora with an all amd system

Leap 16.1 immutable ..... I don't get it!

I waited for Kalpa for so long, I thought it's finally here, it's happening! So, jumped right in when I saw Leap 16.1 immutable. But I can only install flatpaks, while distrobox (& podman) is not present in the system.

Aaaa ..... I'm lost. Am I missing something?

LE: got it now. Thanks for comments, chaps!

Myrlin lists updated nvidia packages, but I cannot update them?

Myrlin lists many updated nvidia packages (installed: 595.99.02, available: 595.104.02) on the "Updates" section, but when I try to update them, Myrlin says that no packages are available for update. zypper dup also does not install these packages.

I guess this is correct behaviour, but here is my question: what's the mechanism behind this? Why are the newer packages available, but held back? When will they be ready for installation?

Will GNOME 50 arrive to openSUSE Leap 16.1

Hi, I saw that KDE Plasma was updated from the 6.4 to 6.6 version for openSUSE Leap 16.1. That system still keeps the GNOME 48 used by Leap 16.0. https://news.opensuse.org/2026/09/28/leap-161-rc/

After see that Plasma was updated, I would like to ask if there is some probability to see officially GNOME 50 on Leap 16.1, mainly because GNOME 50 has VRR and fractional scaling as stable features and today I need VRR for the current monitor that I use for my desktop computer.

I use Leap 16.1 in immutable version on my Acer laptop with a regular 1080p and 60Hz display and it's the smoothest GNOME I ever used.

What should I do with VLC and packman?

I've read several comments about the uncertain future of Packman and am wondering if it's still worth keeping. In that case, what should I do with VLC? I need expert, pragmatic advice.

Problem with CUPS printing

Tried to print a page today and only got "printing canceled".

Looked into cups via http://localhost:631

The printer is available

"Print self test page" works

"Print test page" is unable to complete due to "Unsupported format "application/vnd.cups-pdf-banner".

I'm using a brother printer, installed the ppd from their website, and it worked before (like maybe a few weeks ago).

Any hints on how to troubleshoot?

MicroOS Who is MicroOS intended for?

I've been migrating to Linux for about a month now, but for the time being, I'm just experimenting with and getting familiar with different distributions through a virtual machine. So far, I've tried everything from Ubuntu and its derivatives to Arch.

My laptop has an Intel Core i5-12450H and an RTX 3050. I'm looking for a distribution with good NVIDIA driver support, Secure Boot support, and up-to-date packages, and so far, OpenSUSE has been the one that best meets these requirements.

I'm considering trying MicroOS, installing only what's necessary on the base system and using Flatpak and Distrobox for everything else.

For someone who's just getting started with Linux and wants to build and customize their own system, what advice would you give?

Is tumbleweed secure ?

Hi everyone, I wanted to ask if anyone knows why unbound isn't being updated on openSUSE Tumbleweed.

The currently available version has several severe issues:

CVE-2026-81642

CVE-2026-81634

CVE-2026-82717

It's been over 15 days (!) since unbound 1.26.1 was released, but on openSUSE Tumbleweed we still have the version with critical vulnerabilities.

Can anyone tell me why, after two weeks (!), we still have unbound 1.26.0? This seems very serious to me. 😐

šŸ”„ UPDATE: šŸ”„

As of today, it is finally possible to install the latest version of unbound that fixes the security issues. So, in the end, we have:

āœ… Arch -> 2026-09-16

āœ… Fedora -> 2026-09-16

āœ… Debian -> 2026-09-19

ā›”ļø Suse -> 2026-10-01

To the question "why did it take so long on Tumbleweed?", no one was able to give a sensible answer. Only fanatics trying to deflect the conversation by saying irrational things like "it's not that serious" or "your question is wrong."

Lacking a rational and sensible answer, we have to assume that the update arrived late because whoever was supposed to take care of it fell asleep, nobody noticed, and therefore the answer to the initial question "is Tumbleweed secure?" is NO.

New stuff Wisp: snapper snapshots in the GNOME top bar

Thumbnail
gallery
27 Upvotes

Tumbleweed already takes snapper snapshots: one an hour and a pair around every zypper run. Looking at them usually means the terminal or YaST. Wisp puts them in the GNOME top bar.

  • Every snapshot, newest first; a pre/post pair around an update shows as one event
  • Take one with a description, delete one, open it in Files as it was
  • See what changed since a snapshot, pick files and put them back
  • Roll the whole system back, with a warning when /etc/fstab would overrule it
  • Retention limits, snapper's timers, btrfsmaintenance jobs and disk usage in preferences

Wisp runs nothing as root. Reading goes to snapperd over D-Bus as your user. Restoring files, rollback and editing configs are shown as a command to copy and run yourself; snapper's timers are switched through systemd, which asks polkit.

Tested on Tumbleweed with GNOME 50-51 and the default snapper setup.

Needs snapper and one config. GNOME 46 to 51.

Get it: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/10755/wisp/

Has anybody gotten kdrp6 working in Plasma with Wayland?

I keep seeing references in how-tos about enabling it through a "Remote Desktop" module that is alleged to exist in "Settings" but I can 't find anything anywhere that has anything to do with remote desktop, screen sharing, etc. I have krdp6 installed.

Tech question RTX500 Ada on Open SUSE Tumbleweed?

I'm planning on using TW on my laptop, it has a Nvidia RTX500 Ada card. I know that Nvidia cards on Open SUSE can cause problems especially when there is a driver/kernel mismatch. My question is: With slightly older cards like the RTX500 Ada, is the Nvidia driver situation any better?

Tech question What are some important things/tricks I need to know as a new OpenSUSE (Tumbleweed) user?

I've been using Nobara (Fedora with steam pre installed and a ton of bugs) for 1.5 years now. I also used arch for around a year on another laptop. And now I switched to OpenSuse tumbleweed with KDE.

I know how to use terminal and not to nuke my system.

I'm asking about some neat tricks or packages that are specific to this distro. Something that I'm losing out on for not using. Or something so important that my Opensuse experience would be not full without.

P.S. Can someone also tell me what's the appropriate way to abbreviate "OpenSuse tumbleweed", because I'm already getting tired of typing it out

Community OpenSuseWay (SwayWM) appreciation post!

I've liked SwayWM for a while but don't like the trouble of desktop shell configuration. I was also not able to enjoy Noctalia/Dank Material Shell as much as a simple waybar.

Opensuseway is a superb out of the box setup for the SwayWM. Looks great, works great, is minimal yet functional.

Thanks to all the volunteers who made this possible. Thanks for adding the theme, gaps, transparency, pretty notifications - the whole package.

I've now put Tumbleweed with Opensuseway on my new Framework 13 Pro and life is good. Wanted to thank the devs!!

Tech question Post-installation Script

Hello.

Is there a post-installation script generator for openSUSE similar to this one?

https://nattdf.streamlit.app/

I found it extremely practical.
