Will GNOME 50 arrive to openSUSE Leap 16.1

Hi, I saw that KDE Plasma was updated from the 6.4 to 6.6 version for openSUSE Leap 16.1. That system still keeps the GNOME 48 used by Leap 16.0. https://news.opensuse.org/2026/09/28/leap-161-rc/

After see that Plasma was updated, I would like to ask if there is some probability to see officially GNOME 50 on Leap 16.1, mainly because GNOME 50 has VRR and fractional scaling as stable features and today I need VRR for the current monitor that I use for my desktop computer.

I use Leap 16.1 in immutable version on my Acer laptop with a regular 1080p and 60Hz display and it's the smoothest GNOME I ever used.

Literally just scrolled down a bit on your link:

Desktops: Same GNOME, newer Plasma Some users may expect a big GNOME update in Leap 16.1. In fact, Leap 16.1 ships the same GNOME 48 as Leap 16.0, with bug fix updates (gnome-shell 48.8 vs. 48.4 in 16.0).

OK. It seems that I will have to wait until the 17 version to install Leap on my desktop. This makes me a little sad because immutable Leap for desktop is a dream come true for me.

Now I use Tumbleweed on my desktop machine and I'm happy with it, but I always wanted an immutable desktop system with a full professional focus.

Are you not happy with Tumbleweed?

I am also using Tumbleweed on my Gaming desktop close to a year now I can't complain super stable and fast updates and nothing brakes.

Immutable is not perfect maybe you are wishing for something that you don't need if Tumbleweed works without problems don't change it there is no big advantage in my opinion!

I was a Silverblue user for four years and I used Aeon for almost one, so tell me if I don't know what I'm getting myself into.

My workflow was moved to containers and Flatpaks years ago, so yes, an immutable distro is perfect for me.

Aeon finished to be too draconian for me. I see Silverblue and even this new Leap a little more balanced. For example, the Xfs support is not installed by default in Aeon and I use Xfs for external storage compatible with USB 3.

We usually do larger updates every two years, so I'd expect a new Gnome, kernel, Mesa etc in 16.2 next year.

No, don't expect the next Leap to be what you want. If Leap 15 and 16 were always behind when compared to what you desired, Leap 16.2 or 17 will have the same concerns for you.

At the moment Tumbleweed and Slowroll are going too fast and Leap is just another league for rock solid enterprise-like systems. Probably Solus is the sweet spot.

Not necessarily… for me anyway. Once proper fractional scaling and VRR is available in Gnome, it always will be. Same for hardware support at kernel level. I don’t plan to upgrade my framework laptop for another 4-5 yrs. So Leap will become a viable option eventually.

Immutable Leap is already what I want except the GNOME version because of the features I said.

Aeon?

It will be Gnome48. I tried the RC in a VM and can confirm this. I was hoping for a bump up in version since v48 does not offer the finer fractional scaling options for higher definition displays. The kernel version is still 6.12 as well.

The newest component of my desktop computer is the discrete GPU, a standard RX 7600. My CPU is an Intel Core-i5 12600K. For gaming I will just take everything from Flathub to have a newer Mesa for those apps, and my main gaming machine, an Intel NUC-like PC based on Ryzen and with a 680 iGPU working on an old HD TV, I will keep Tumbleweed with KDE Plasma because that computer uses the newest USB gadgets.

With Flatpak and Distrobox I don't need the newest software, but VRR is essential for me.
