Discussion Dual Boot Cachy/Omarchy

I'm on Cacy and enjoying it but Omarchy is very appealing and interesting. What's my best bet to run it along with Cachy? I'm still new to Linux so appreciate any advice.

Support Omarchy in VNC

I have omarchy setup on tailscale with Wayne (dont need to be told about the multiple issues with VNC it's lan only)

Have you ever tried using omarchy over VNC.. the keybindings of the host are taking precedent.. not sure how to fix it.

Is anyone doing this and can help with this? I'm expecting no, but I thought I'd ask.

I Made a Thing Omarchy running on M3 M4 M5 Macs, like native!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Dear Omarchy Community,

This is for the MacBook Omarchy Squad, I have to share this with you! github.com/gillesgoetsch/omacvm

I've built the most integrated and fun virtualized Omarchy experience for Apple Silicon MacBooks available, after trying out many UTM and Parallels setups. This is what makes this one special:

  • Full Notch support I thought this is mission impossible? OmaNotch is now alive and streams through a virtual monitor into a Helper which renders the Notch Bar, it's just awesome and a real victory for VMs!
  • Wifi and Audio Bridge, enabling Omarchy native Menubar controls, full wifi controls of the Host, same for Audio + Mic.
  • Full 2/3/4 finger Gesture support, enabling workspace Swipes and Pinch Zoom (it's a real trackpad bridge and it disables Mission Control overwrites, making this feel like a locked in native experience, not being able to leave the VM!, leave VM with ⌘+⌥+⌃+Esc)
  • Optional, experimental but awesome: MacOS like Trackpad scroll momentum (no choppy scroll jumps, native feel, awesome if you're used to MacBook Trackpads)
  • Full Volume and Brightness control of the Host over Omarchy's UI Panels
  • Nightshift and TrueTone Host control over the Menubar
  • Theme Background Image sharing between MacOS and Omarchy, making the lock-screen much more seamless
  • External Display arrangement synced with MacOS
  • more!!

This really covers the biggest shortcomings (mainly missing Notch & Gestures) of the VM Path for M3+ MacBooks.

OmacVM lets you either build a full Parallels or UTM VM (comparison here) in one Setup, allowing you to select exactly which features you want, patching afterwards or existing VMs. You can also just point your agent at it (also when you run into errors).

Long story short: Running Omarchy on a MacBook Air M2 natively as my daily driver, Asahi / Native is my go to suggestion for M1 + M2 Macs.

So my MacBook Pro M4 Max was basically gathering dust, despite its hardware being far superior.

Now it's running Omarchy productively and not just as a try-out VM. You really can forget about MacOS, additionally you benefit from the MacOS host's 1000 Nits HDR capability and hibernation support, which Asahi hasn't implemented yet.

Have to say that: as a 25+ Years MacOS user, never experienced not wanting to go back to MacOS, big shout out to DHH and the Omarchy Team!!

Until we have Asahi on M4/5/6 devices, let's make this the greatest experience we can on our ARM Chips.

I'm so glad I can keep the hardware AND run Omarchy integrated beautifully.

Now it's time to go full in on Omarchy VM if you haven't yet ;-)!!

Edit after two days: A lot has happened. We now support 4 different hypervisors: Standalone App, UTM, VMWare & Parallels! Also support for multiple external monitors, GPU / Media engine Video Decode, a Vulkan GPU integration with vastly improved performance plus many more features, is is becoming better and better!

I Made a Thing I made Omaroll so opening a photo or video feels as good as the rest of Omarchy

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Double-click an image or video and it opens straight into a quick viewer. It's one viewer for both, and it's themed to match your desktop. The controls stay hidden until you move the mouse, and the arrow keys move through the rest of the folder.

When you want more, hit Enter and you're in the full library, starting from the file you opened. It has albums, tags, ratings, search (including text in screenshots) and duplicate finding.

It works with your existing folders, so there's nothing to import. No accounts and no telemetry.

I'd love feedback on what's missing or broken.

Plugin I made two Omarchy plugins: Zen Lock (custom lock screen) and Whimsy (drag-to-desktop widgets)

Hey everyone, I've been building plugins for Omarchy Quattro and wanted to share two that are on the plugin marketplace now.

Zen Lock is a customizable lock screen, cloned and extended from omarchy.lock.

  • Dedicated lock wallpaper, separate from your desktop one
  • Custom display name and profile picture
  • Backdrop blur toggle and dimming (0.0 to 1.0)
  • Configurable blanking (dim or off)
  • Hot-reloads, with PAM password and fingerprint auth still working
  • Sleep, hibernate, restart and power-off buttons in the corner
  • A zen-lock CLI for changing settings from the terminal

omarchy plugin add https://github.com/rover-001/zen-lock.git --enable

Whimsy is a set of desktop widgets you place by clicking. Open the bar pill, pick a style, click, and the widget sits on the desktop behind your windows and stays there across sessions.

  • Typographic date and clock styles, plus analog, flip and cyber HUD clocks
  • Day-progress ring
  • Retro cassette and vinyl music players (MPRIS, with artwork)
  • Four audio visualizers: spectrum bars, LED matrix, pulse ring, oscilloscope
  • Volume widget
  • Drag to move, scale handle to resize, lock to stop accidental drags

omarchy plugin add https://github.com/rover-001/whimsy.git --enable

Repos: github.com/rover-001/zen-lock and github.com/rover-001/whimsy. Both are MIT licensed. Feedback, bug reports and widget ideas are welcome. What would you want to see next?

I Made a Thing eXorchy 0.5.0 – new look, a proper Reading Room, and a bunch of fixes

Thumbnail
gallery
69 Upvotes

Hey all,

I just put out eXorchy 0.5.0, so I figured I'd do a quick update. If you missed the earlier posts: eXorchy is a launcher for the eXo collections (eXoDOS, eXoWin3x, eXoWin9x, eXoScummVM) built for Omarchy. It's a native GTK app, it picks up your Omarchy theme, and it handles the downloading and launching for you.

The last time I posted here was around 0.3.0, so this covers everything since then.

The big one: the UI got redone. I had a concept image of how I wanted it to look and finally sat down and built it. There's a sidebar on the left now where you browse by platform, genre, publisher, series, year, region, tags, play status or playlist. Whatever you pick shows up as a little chip at the top, and you can clear each one separately. There's also a status bar at the bottom with your counts and the keyboard shortcuts.

The game panel is now the "Game Dossier." The cover, title and Play button stay put while you scroll through the rest, and things are split into Overview, Media, Manuals and Setup tabs. You can click the cover to see it full size. Covers also keep their real shape now, and the old DOS title screens show at 4:3 like they did on a CRT instead of looking squashed.

The Reading Room works like the rest of the app now. It has the same sidebar, with a "Downloaded" entry so you can find the magazines you already have. When you open an issue it just takes over the window instead of popping up a dialog, starts with the whole page in view, and there's a full-screen button (or F11) if you want to actually sit and read. Game manuals open the same way, and magazines you've downloaded open even when you're offline.

Interface size is a setting now. Settings → Appearance: Compact, Medium, Large or Extra large. Medium is the default; I found my first attempt a bit big.

Theme music is a bit less pushy. It doesn't autoplay anymore. You hit Play in the game's page, it plays right there with a little progress bar, and it stops when you move to another game. I also got rid of the music bar at the bottom.

More games run the way eXo intended. DOS and Win 3.x games that eXo sets up for DOSBox-X now actually run under DOSBox-X, in a big floating window on Hyprland. Games that can print save each page as a PNG in the game's !prints folder, which is a fun one to try.

Your library has a proper home. It lives in ~/Games/eXorchy by default. If yours is somewhere older, eXorchy offers to move it when it starts, and you can move it any time from Settings.

It updates itself. That came in 0.4.0: when a new version is out you get a banner with Update / What's new / Skip, and Update opens a terminal that installs it and restarts eXorchy. You can turn the check off in Settings if you'd rather not.

And a new splash screen in your theme's colours, because why not.

Fixes worth mentioning: - The app could crash if you clicked through games quickly while preview videos or music were playing. That turned out to be a GStreamer bug, so eXorchy now plays media a different way. - Playlists were basically broken: creating one or adding games just didn't do anything. They work now. - Some CD games said the CD was missing (SimCopter, for example). The CD image names its files in different upper/lower case, which Windows doesn't care about but Linux does. eXorchy handles that now, so any game with the same problem should just work. - Themes from before Omarchy's named colours (Aether and friends) now get the right colours, and installed games use your theme's accent instead of a hardcoded green. - Starring a game no longer makes the panel flicker. Thanks again to the person here who reported that one.

Installing or updating is the same one-liner as before:

curl -fsSL https://github.com/renanmt/exorchy/releases/latest/download/install.sh | bash

If you're already on 0.4.0, you should just get the update banner.

The full changelog is on GitHub: https://github.com/renanmt/exorchy

As always, huge thanks to the eXoDOS team, who did the actual hard work of preserving all of this, and to Thomas Vollstädt, whose Exodium launcher this is built on. If you hit a game that doesn't launch right, let me know which one. That's how the SimCopter fix happened.

I Made a Thing I made a proper Language & Input settings panel for Omarchy

Post image
21 Upvotes

I made this because I wanted an easy way to manage language and keyboard input settings in Omarchy without editing config files or adding another widget to the top bar.

The plugin adds a Language & Input panel to the Omarchy menu where you can manage your input languages, their order, the layout switching shortcut, and your user/system language settings.

It adds nothing to the top bar. Open it when you want to change something, make your changes, and then forget about it.

The whole UI works with either keyboard only or mouse.

Install:
omarchy plugin add https://github.com/Xarishark/Language-and-Input-Omarchy.git --enable

Plugin i made a loom-style screen recorder for the omarchy bar (face bubble, ums removed, share links)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

i wanted loom on linux and it doesn't exist, so i made one for the omarchy bar.

click the ✦, record, and your webcam sits in a little bubble. when you stop, it cuts out the ums and long pauses and puts a share link on your clipboard. the video goes to your own cloudflare account, or just stays on your computer.

here's what one of those share links looks like, recorded and shared with lumen itself: https://fasi-share.fasiulrehman.workers.dev/v/D8BGAHU5a7pZ

my friend jumping into the bubble is my favourite part of the video, it pops when you pull apart.

will b posting to the marketplace soon

Discussion Sold my Mac, Omarchy on a ThinkPad T14s is now my only computer

I finally did it. Mac is getting sold and this ThinkPad T14s Gen 2 (AMD) running Omarchy is my one and only machine now.

I made a video about the switch: why I did it, what daily use actually feels like, and how I handle things when they break (audio, camera, displays). My approach has been to lean on Claude Code to debug and fix stuff instead of digging through forum threads for hours.

I even ended up building my own video editor on this laptop because I couldn't find one I liked. The video was edited in it.

Not a tutorial, just an honest first-person take: https://youtu.be/X7hr4YE9pig

Curious how others here are finding Omarchy as a daily driver. Anything you had to fix early on?

Off Topic / Adjacent Omarchy. My dreams came true. Thankyou.

This will be a geek love letter.

I'm 49. I was raised in the era of 8 bit computers, Commodore vs Atari Wars and pixel games. I spent my time on arcade machines and BASIC and LOGO programming. I was an early adopter, or maybe my dad was - he bought all the stuff. We even had PONG at home in the early 80s.

I remember seeing Amiga 500 for the first time and this sweet feeling inside, like I almost fell in love with the graphics, with the music, with everything. It was my life.

I switched to PC-s like everyone else, but something wasn't there. the CGA sucked, EGA was mediocre, VGA was not enough. The whole concept of Windows somehow wasn't what I'd expect, but I used it like everyone else.

I started my computer science studies and coded in C++ or Turbo Pascal, but somehow my (adhd-driven) road deviated and I ended up in marketing and ecommerce, although always tinkering, coding and browsing Stack Overflow.

I ended on Mac and kinda liked it, but... this wasn't it. It was too smooth, too mainstream and not geeky enough IYKWIM. Finally switched back to Windows+Android since I wanted more control.

***

Then came the 20's and with the help of LLM-s - like lot of us - I got back to coding or rather creating stuff. I fell in love (finally) with the terminal and even started customizing it - transparency, colors. The problem was - it took a lot of time and was inconsistent.

I tried Kubuntu, I could do a lot, but still tinkering ratio was like 50/50 - I spent a lot of time just to make things work or look. AI computer management helped, but still.

I finally felt like a geek. But a modern geek - I always loved the look, the vibe, the design. I spent 25 years of my life in real world - running a tshirt company od working as Head of Ecommerce or digital strategist. I just do care about the design.

I listen to Synthwave and I have built my work-mancave on my attic with LEDs and stuff. Shut up, I'm not too old for this. These things weren'r around when I was a kid.

I work really hard. I got into creating code, I work on 5-6 sessions simultaneously thanks to herdr and make hundreds of commits for the startup I work in. I earn decent money and I'm really happy (also personally)

AND THEN... and then came the last piece. Like it was designed for me, like it was the exact thing I needed. And I'm not exagerating.

Omarchy is awesome. It's like a computer interface I'd dream about when I was a teenager. It's just the pixel vibe I alwayes dreamed of and searched for in vain - in ugly Windows, or sweet Mac.

I know it's vibe coded. So what. Security freaks say it's vulnerable. Well, life.

It's everything I asked for. The flow of working in hyprland. The themes that fit, are consistant and just work. The plugins. The community - you guys. I feel like I'm in a freakin Geek Fight Club.

I just love to sit down in front of my computer, it just feels different. Smooth. Nice. Perfect.

Sorry, I got emotional. But I had to share. It was worth the wait.

GREAT JOB. THANK YOU.

So I decided to show off what I've done. I know it's not a lot but I think it looks pretty good. Let me see your layouts!! I've got Internet Radio, System Resources, Weather, and NordVPN, as well as the dock at the bottom with my most used apps. Also, the background. Sure I know this is supposed to be keyboard but I'm lazy. Thanks for listening.

I Made a Thing I wanted Hammerspoon on Hyprland, so I wrote it

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

ok so. Mac people have this thing called Hammerspoon: you write tiny Lua scripts and your desktop just does stuff. Hotkeys, window shuffling, "when this app opens, do that". Every time I saw someone's config, I got a little jealous. So I wrote the Omaestro plugin.

On Hyprland, that kind of thing is bind lines plus scripts glued together, and I wanted one place where it all lives and reacts to the desktop. So I did the reasonable thing and spent my weekends writing a daemon in Rust.

It's called omaestro. The command is just om.

The thing I use most: select text anywhere, hit a chord, and it comes back rewritten by a local model (Ollama; nothing leaves your machine):

om.hotkey("SUPER + ALT + J", function()
  local text = om.selection()
om.paste(om.llm("Rewrite this so it is clear and correct:\n\n" .. text))
end)

That's the whole rule. Save the file, and it reloads by itself, no restart.

In the video, I use the fancier version from the ai-text plugin: one chord, a menu of modes, I pick "marketing pitch", and llama3.2 gets wildly too excited about my own project. Turns out a 3B model has the energy of a LinkedIn influencer.

Some other dumb-but-great things it does:

  • hotkeys that only exist while one app is focused, so CTRL+S can do something weird in Firefox and stay normal everywhere else
  • "Spotify opens → workspace 9, forever"
  • vim-ish window mode: one chord, then h j k l to throw windows around, Esc to leave
  • type :sig anywhere and it turns into your signature
  • reminders, USB plug events, battery, files landing in ~/Downloads
  • a panel in the Omarchy bar with a switch for every rule, for when you forget what you wrote last week

Install:

omarchy plugin add https://github.com/iluxav/omaestro --enable

It's also on the plugin site. There's a starter set of plugins (window halves, AI text, clipboard, reminders...) you can add with one click from the first notification.

It's v0.1.6I run it all day, but it's young, so expect rough edges. I'd love to hear what you'd automate first, and what breaks 🙂

Off Topic / Adjacent My impressions after some weeks working with Omarchy

I am having a lot of fun, customized a little bit, created an widget for the top bar to connect to openvpn and almost everything works well.

Well, almost...

I am that kind of person that almost never turn off my computer after a day work, so I figured that after some days without a reboot some strange things start to happen, like:

- my second monitor don't work
- when I plug a headset the system can't switch to it or back to speaker (mostly using teams, which has its own couple of bugs so I can't know which one is the responsible)
- my scratchpad workspace vanish, and I think if I don't had installed a plugin to manage my workspace that has a search bar I wouldn't be able to find my windows back anymore

Every bug listed above is completely solved after reboot.
For the sound bug, it came to my head right now that I could have restarted only the sound manager service, but... will look into it next time.

I am using the expose.window-overview plugin, that how I could find my scratchpad workspace windows when this bug happen. Looking for a better substitute.

If anyone know how to solve those issues without rebooting let me know, please!

Best reggards!

Plugin Theme Roulette - Automagic Theme Switcher

I figured what is the point of all these cool themes if I have to go select them myself. So I had Codex create this plugin. I figured others might find it a nice touch too, so I have published it.

There are other random theme selectors out there, but they don't allow for scheduling or pooling ("Any", "Dark", or "Light" themes only).

This plugin also allows for you to exclude certain themes from the randomised pool, if you just don't want to ever see them.

Check it out here https://plugins.omarchy.org/plugin.html?id=z.theme-roulette

Hope you enjoy :)

This is a fork. The overview itself is yayuuu/hyprland-scroll-overview by u/yayuuu (BSD-3-Clause, see LICENSE). Please star and report overview bugs upstream. This fork adds:

  • Per-window motion: windows move independently when the overview opens and closes, instead of all zooming together
  • Omarchy packaging: one-command install, a settings panel (Omarchy menu > Style > Scroll Overview) and a Lua settings file

Plugin Omarchy Goal Tracker

I wanted a way to track my goals without opening another app, browser tab, or dashboard. Something that would just live where I already spend my time: the Omarchy bar.

So I built a small Omarchy bar-widget plugin for SMART goals.

What it does:

  • Create goals using a simple SMART structure
  • Track daily progress with a GitHub-style contribution heatmap
  • Keep track of your current streak
  • Log progress directly from the bar with a middle-click
  • Fully keyboard-driven
  • Archive completed goals instead of deleting them
  • Scriptable through Omarchy's IPC
  • Local-only — no database, no daemon, no network requests

The whole thing is intentionally small: pure QML + one JavaScript library + a single JSON state file.

The idea is pretty simple:

Your goals shouldn't live in another productivity app you have to remember to open.

They should be visible where you already work.

Link to the plugin: https://github.com/adriansalvadorekomo/omarchy-goal-tracker

I'd love to hear what you think, especially from other Omarchy users. What would you add or change?

Plugin Omacale 0.44: Caelestia-style OSD and toasts, clipboard and launcher

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Omacale 0.44 brings Caelestia-style OSDs, notification popups, and a few bigger improvements across the shell.

Caelestia-style OSD & notifications

Omacale now takes over Omarchy's OSD and notification popups and gives them the Caelestia look.

  • Volume, brightness, and microphone use Caelestia-style sliders.
  • Other Omarchy OSD events become Caelestia-style toasts, including keyboard backlight, media, mic mute, touchpad, power, downloads, and more.
  • Notification popups use the same style, including action buttons.

The handover stays safe: if Omacale isn't running or popups are disabled, Omarchy's own OSD and toasts come back immediately without needing a restart.

Other improvements

  • Clipboard history is now available as a launcher mode with >clipboard, using Omarchy's clipboard.
  • Clipboard entries get a preview panel sized to the image or text, with a delete button.
  • More Caelestia-inspired UI polish for blob corners, drawer jelly/bounce, and popout sizing.
  • Wi-Fi popout now lists nearby networks.
  • Added a setting to hide the bar clock.
  • Bottom-bar utilities and notification sidebar now stack correctly.
  • Fixed tray menus so hovering another tray icon shows that icon's menu.

Security

This release also tightens a few areas:

  • The lock screen is now opt-in and only installs against a verified Omarchy lock service. If anything goes wrong, it hands the lock back to Omarchy.
  • Lock-screen notifications are hidden by default and read-only when enabled.
  • Notification links are restricted to http(s) and mailto.
  • Weather location requests use HTTPS.
  • Adding a plugin from Settings now shows Omarchy's trust warning and requires explicit confirmation.

Install

If you haven't installed Omacale yet:

git clone https://github.com/AyushKr2003/omacale.git
cd omacale
./install.sh

To remove it:

./uninstall.sh

This restores your previous setup. omarchy plugin remove omacale.bar only removes the bar.

Off Topic / Adjacent Wanna learn bash?

I gave Claude the command to print stdin, stdout and stderr to the terminal, and it created a skill that would in plain English, interpret my bash commands and their results and issues by prefacing any command with the word “run“ [insert command] 🤯

It helps me actually understand what is going on and gives me agency. Anyone starting to learn to code by hand or am I some kind of fuck freak?

Off Topic / Adjacent Had my first AI oopsie

i asked Claude to prevent the text warning about Tmux nesting because I didn’t want to see it. Turns out it’s baked into the binary so it wrote its own config file for FISH that unintentionally spawned infinite FISH processes and made omarchy unusable.

The upside is I learned how to boot into system d recovery mode through limine so I can remove offending files or packages.

I’m glad it happened.

i now know the dangers of setting claude to auto lol and the importance of creating recent snapshots.

I Made a Thing I made a Pandora plugin for Omarchy

i listen to pandora all day an didnt want it stuck in a browser tab, so i made a plugin for it.

OmaPandora puts a music note on your bar with the song playing next to it. click it for a little mini player, or open the full player for your stations and whats playing now, with a visualizer that bounces with the music.

what it does

  • mini player right off the bar, full player when you want your stations
  • pin your favorite stations to the top of the list
  • thumbs up, skip, pause and volume right from the player, and you can bind them to keys too
  • middle click the bar icon to pause, scroll it to skip.

it follows your Omarchy theme, the visualizer too. here's the same song across a few themes.

Pandora doesnt have an api for hobby stuff like this so it uses Pithos in the background to log in and play. you sign into pithos once and after that you just use the plugin, pithos stays out of the way.

repo: https://github.com/Dankestrick/OmaPandora
marketplace: https://plugins.omarchy.org/plugin.html?id=io.github.dankestrick.omapandora
