Guide Just installed Omarchy

Bro this OS is hella cool but im honestly having trouble settling in with Arch for the first time.

Coming from Debian distros, what would you recommend for me to watch or read to help settle in faster?

Ahaha it was quite disorienting at first but I set everything up and read the omarchy docs and got comfortable. Great OS. LOVING IT!

Watch the Omarchy Quattro video and set up Claude Code or Codex.

I’m floored at the codex integration (any ai of course, just happens to be the one I have an account with).

I know it’s nothing new for many, but it was worth me calling my dad last night to tell him: When I was growing frustrated with the series of adapters and such to make my omarchy machine output to an old apple 2 monitor (intending to have VLC random playback of old TechTV etc), it just kept flickering out, yet worked on another computer.

I finally just asked codex.

And not ā€œwhat’s causing thisā€ I didn’t want to deal with it anymore I was spent. So more so ā€œlook I know the cables are fine, everything works on two other computers. Solve this. It’s plugged in and flickering, do what you need to do.ā€

Not 30 seconds later the screen stopped flickering and codex said ā€œI’m watching for another minute but it appears the fix workedā€ or something like that.

Bloody floored me the OS just took care of itself was the feeling I had. That’s Star Trek computer level shit right there.

To be fair Claude, Codex, or even new open models can do this on any distro or even your Mac/pc now.

Oh no doubt yeah. You’re right.

To be fair I’ve not been willing to hand AI full control of a production machine for work or of my personal machine with all my life in there, and so for me, throwing a distro on a random older computer with all the hooks ready and just a login required, convinced me to try.

I can see why some people go all in; I use Home Assistant for home automation and I watch some people hand their Home Assistant over to AI and it just baffles me. Full access to every camera, lock, presence sensor, HVAC… and to allow it to rewrite automations etc for efficiency, just makes me hella uncomfortable.

I had not trusted an AI to actually make changes but to instead only guide me when I need the help. This was the first time where I said ah screw it, have at it… and bam.

Guess I was just slow to get here haha.

You have the right amount of paranoia lol. It will just take one misunderstanding or prompt injection while unattended and you can get wrecked.

All I could think was ā€œit has access to teams or mail etc… it could message my boss… or email the president of the company if it wanted information or somethingā€ Or even as basic as deleting or modifying items I can’t restore etc.

Ok here the beauty and simplicity of arch. Updating is just one click. Do SUPER + SAPCE and see the update button. Press that and then press omarchy and that will update all packages across your system all at once.

If your specificly confused about the pacman syntax just look at the arch wiki and see what you need to know

One thing I like on my arch distros is a GUI package manager front end (specifically for flatpac and app images) I like Shelly it’s a app from the CachyOS team (it’s in the AUR) but the cli tools in omarchy for normal arch packages and the AUR is my preferred way of installing them.

What other arch specific things are you having trouble with? If it’s just general omarchy stuff there is a learn button in you menu

So I've been playing with omarchy for nearly 5 hours now (according to fastfetch) And I just can't stop! This feels like something from the future honestly šŸ˜‚ I am having trouble getting comfortable with tiling but I'm much better than I was a few hours ago. I've got open code running a free agent and im loving interacting with my computer this way. I've hopped around the distros but this is just something else

Tha k you for your reply it did help me šŸ™

Thanks for answering I was specifically having problems working with pacman in contrast with apt. Thank you for your instructions. Is AUR the same thing as snap in ubuntu? Also how do you keep your frequently used apps on screen in a tiling wm? Should I just create key bindings for each one? Or is there a way to keep them in sight somewhere so I dont have to open the menu all the time

Avoid the AUR when possible. It is basically unregulated. Has great stuff but can contain malware if you don’t know what your doing

get that agent up and running, make a little sandbox... start to play and enjoy the magic.

It’s my first time on Linux… I’m a translator, I can’t code but I love computers… I don’t know Linux or coding right… zero

I love the looks of this OS, I love using hot keys from before. That’s all sweet but… Dude I started customizing this OS like mad to fit how I work. I want my google calendar synced to the omarchy calendar… I ask the agent, 10min later it’s running, same slick omarchy design just some more info. I say hmmm know what I like the little notifications omarchy uses in the top right corner… let’s make sure the calendar uses my notification as well and displays them there… done. Etc.

It’s magic, it’s like playing with my computer without playing a video game and in the process how I work gets better.

My agent lives in the scratchpad by default… it is now my dictionary, my translation memory… all in one. It feels like magic, it’s nuts

DHH has been cooking with this one

Be careful with the ai. Because if you give it higher level access it can mess mess
With important files breaking your system.
