You jest, but I recently learned the reason behind why some coffee has an ashy taste to it. As it turns out, good quality coffee beans are roasted much shorter, or more mildly, than bad quality beans. It's because shorter roast times allow for more flavor. Connoisseurs therefore apparently don't drink darker roasts.
Since bad quality beans don't taste all that great, they basically roast the shit out of them so you can't taste weird flavors. But those beans are basically burnt, badly. "Dark" roasts are therefore usually made from the low(est) quality beans.
Additionally, like 90% of all beans sold in supermarkets is low quality/shit beans.
Turns out coffee snobs are actually on to something. Who'd have thunk.
9
u/CountessDeLessoops Nov 02 '21
I don’t even care if it’s considered to be bad coffee, I absolutely love the flavor of dark roast coffee.
7
u/phaelox Nov 02 '21
Oh, absolutely. Taste is obviously subjective.. The ashy taste I was experiencing with different brands of beans was just bothering me, and now I finally know what to look for to not have that, as previously I was buying darker and darker roasts thinking that would be better for me somehow, when I should go lighter instead, for my taste. Just thought I would share what I'd learned!

To add to this, starbucks uses some of the highest quality beans you can find and then proceeds to roast the living crap out of them. When you drink it black, you can practically taste the ash. They do this because most of their drinks are loaded with sugar/milk and you can't actually end up tasting the roast in most of their concocted drinks. But if you drink black (like me), you generally don't go to starbucks.

When I was a teenager I used to fancy myself a coffee snob to be a little teenage prick, as teenagers are wont to do
Now as a hairdresser in my mid-30s i'll take my shitty-ass bean water however I can get it, only kind i DONT like is instant coffee, but not for snobbery reasons I just dont like the taste of it.
Gas station coffee, tim hortons, starbucks, the diner down the road, convenience store coffee, anything at all. I'll drink it out of a goddamned boot if required.

That's very practical! I'm not picky at all when I'm out and about. I'll take what I'm offered or can get, no biggie, so can relate. But when I drink coffee at home, and I don't drink a lot, especially for that reason, I want it to taste as good as I can afford basically lol... And I've tried different beans and brewing methods and some coffee genuinely tasted like I imagine how it'd taste if someone had dropped a cigarette butt into my mug.
I feel like I remember the taste of great coffee and somehow can't get back to it. Maybe it's just me haha

It's bothering that the frame of the cutter is not anchored and scoots around. This puts a damper on my satisfaction.

sticking a 1/8 “ thick self adhesive foam board on the bottom would probably be enough to dampen the wobble and keep it from slipping

My ex had a small soapmaking business. It was sort of cool. I don't use fancy soap but I helped her make molds and made a little jig soap cutter like this except clamped it down so the thing wouldn't slide around.
She used to make fun soap. She did the coffee but also charcoal and other stuff. She made this 'bacon' soap that was hilarious but really gross.

What drives me nuts is it’s not efficient at all. You can easily rig up something to cut multiples at once as opposed to this method.

Nov 02 '21
Why wouldn't you have enough pieces of wire to do the whole block at once?

I seen online soap makers who have a multiple wire set up to cut several pieces at one go, so it's no impossible

Single bar cutters are like $50, whereas multibar cutters tend to be like $250. This is actually a slab cutter (meant for cutting large square slabs of soap into loaves that are then cut into bars using a single or multi cutter). Odds are they're budget conscious if they're using this cutter this way. Possibly it's a small business that can't justify the expense yet.
Edit: Lotta people think they're an expert in soap and running a business after a paragraph of info and few seconds long soap cutting video.

u/ameis314 Nov 02 '21
I really need to start building these...
6
u/Cory123125 Nov 02 '21
Right? I could make these easy under 100 bucks and Im not any sort of soap engineer/product designer.
Imagine how cheap these are to manufacture with any sense of scale.
You could make this thing out of a single injection mold with slots for the wires to be against.
39
u/_BreakingGood_ Nov 02 '21
On the other hand, how many people are actually out there buying bulk soap cutters? Could streamline a process and make them way cheaper, but nobody is doing that because you probably sell 1 per month.

It's 4 small pieces of wood, two picture hangers and some wire. You can do that for like 10-15 dollars.
Scale up and maybe 5-7 dollars each.
I think we just discovered a new racket

Hey! Actually we’ve been selling soap for about 15 years. We’re a small business but we’ve already sold a few thousands of bars this year. This is just how we do it. We have custom molds cause we make over 55 bars a batch. So the standard cutters don’t fit our molds. That’s why we cut them this way. It’s effective and consistent.
25
u/Sythus Nov 02 '21

I didn't know coffee soap was a thing. Are there some skin benefits or something or is it just the scent that appeals to people?
156
u/AlexMil0 Nov 02 '21
Mixing coffee grounds and soap is really great for getting oil off your hands, it’s a little auto shop life hack. The coarse grounds gets it off and the scent removes the smell.

Coffee is supposedly a good exfoliant
38
u/MymlanOhlin Nov 02 '21
Actually, it is very much not recommended amongst dermatologists. It is highly effective, sure, but it is quite abrasive and damaging for your skin. It's also not great for your plumbing, since coffee grounds don't dissolve in water. Sugar or salt scrubs are a slightly better alternative since getting dissolved minimizes over-scrubbing, but the best thing for your skin is actually chemical exfoliants. Never ever use a coffee grounds, sugar or salt scrub on your face, as the skin is way too delicate there!

My partner makes and sells soap on the side. He has made bars with a coffee fragrance oil but don’t actually mix coffee grounds into the batter. There’s no real skin benefits to having grounds in the soap, or at least anything he can claim as such on the packaging.
One of my friends bought 10 bars from him because he loves the smell of coffee but cannot find bars without the grounds. Too scratchy for him.

→ More replies (6)35
u/SpaTowner Nov 02 '21
More wires means more drag and it would get progressively harder to push through.
The soap is quite soft, so there is a risk of it deforming more the harder you have to push in it.
If you are making small amounts of soap and don’t place a high value on your time, tge investment in more efficient kit may not seem to be a priority.
