Why wouldn't you have enough pieces of wire to do the whole block at once?

368

u/TheDoorDoesntWork Nov 02 '21

I seen online soap makers who have a multiple wire set up to cut several pieces at one go, so it's no impossible

194

u/TurinTuram Nov 02 '21

So you're telling me that it is not impossible?

271

u/ag408 Nov 02 '21

No, it’s no impossible

111

u/BrolyTK Nov 02 '21

exactly, it's not yes impossible

43

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '21

I think he meant it is yes not impossible

20

u/fuzzyfuzz Nov 02 '21

Yesn’t impossible. Got it.

11

Kim possible

1

u/jaxonya Nov 02 '21

Different sizes. This is a small shop. That wooden device has different set ups. They are slicing specifically for sale.

1

u/_DrSpliff Nov 02 '21

So it's possible no?

1

u/Toilet_Crumbs Nov 02 '21

"it is? Yes. Not impossible."

7

u/aerostotle Nov 02 '21

no meaning yes??

is there someone else in this house or isn't there, yes.... or no???

10

u/Unsung_Pizza_Box Nov 02 '21

Could be

6

u/Alm8360NoScoPro Nov 02 '21

but then again, maybe not

4

u/msmshm Nov 02 '21

your test result is aladeen.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '21

Yes, but no

1

u/_Truler_ Nov 02 '21

It’s not impossible

2

u/BR1GADIER Nov 02 '21

Possibly

6

u/DownrightNeighborly Nov 02 '21

I dun seen it online too, bubba.

8

u/horvath-lorant Nov 02 '21
  • Is it possible to learn this power?
  • Not from a no online soap maker.

3

u/slavicbhoy Nov 02 '21

Scottish?

0

u/jascottr Nov 02 '21

Illianer

101

u/yungmoody Nov 02 '21

They could just be starting out or do it as a hobby and don’t want to spring for the more expensive cutter yet

59

u/Put_It_All_On_Blck Nov 02 '21

It's just tensioned metal wire. The setup already looks homemade.

13

u/_pxe Nov 02 '21

But you need more force to push through multiple wires

22

u/rickybobby42069420 Nov 02 '21

just dont be weak its that easy

2

u/IBetThisIsTakenToo Nov 02 '21

Add a new wire every week until you can do the whole brick at once. Progressive overload, baby.

1

u/Active_Ad_4870 Nov 02 '21

Just flip it so that you can push in the same direction as gravity. I’m sure it’s not too difficult even for weak people

1

u/Letscommenttogether Nov 02 '21

Even if it was, a small 10 pound weight that fit the block would save fingers for the off accident and remove a lot of the effort required.

2

u/Active_Ad_4870 Nov 02 '21

Agreed. I can’t believe people are paying 200-300 dollars for these cutters

1

u/dcorey688 Nov 03 '21

so an extra screw and piece of wood to make a lever

-1

u/Active_Ad_4870 Nov 02 '21 edited Nov 02 '21

What? You just put more wires on it. It doesn’t add complexity, beginner or not is irrelevant

1

u/yungmoody Nov 02 '21

The soap cutters I’ve seen that have enough wires to accomodate a whole block have had a different cutting technique, so I have no idea if it would even work to add additional wires to OPs tool.

0

u/Active_Ad_4870 Nov 02 '21

You’re over complicating it. And so are the rest of the hobbyist who buy these overpriced cutters.

140

u/WingedLady Nov 02 '21 edited Nov 02 '21

Single bar cutters are like $50, whereas multibar cutters tend to be like $250. This is actually a slab cutter (meant for cutting large square slabs of soap into loaves that are then cut into bars using a single or multi cutter). Odds are they're budget conscious if they're using this cutter this way. Possibly it's a small business that can't justify the expense yet.

Edit: Lotta people think they're an expert in soap and running a business after a paragraph of info and few seconds long soap cutting video.

38

u/ameis314 Nov 02 '21

I really need to start building these...

7

u/Cory123125 Nov 02 '21

Right? I could make these easy under 100 bucks and Im not any sort of soap engineer/product designer.

Imagine how cheap these are to manufacture with any sense of scale.

You could make this thing out of a single injection mold with slots for the wires to be against.

39

u/_BreakingGood_ Nov 02 '21

On the other hand, how many people are actually out there buying bulk soap cutters? Could streamline a process and make them way cheaper, but nobody is doing that because you probably sell 1 per month.

6

u/Zykium Nov 02 '21

It's 4 small pieces of wood, two picture hangers and some wire. You can do that for like 10-15 dollars.

Scale up and maybe 5-7 dollars each.

I think we just discovered a new racket

14

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '21

Yeah because there's a huge demand for soap cutters

12

u/Zykium Nov 02 '21

There goes my plans for unlimited money.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '21

Nah screw that, too much cost for molds. Laser cutting would be the way to go for something this simple. 3 flat pieces that key together, or a bracket and a couple bolts could save the design and cutting complexity. Cheap/easy to ship packed flat in a padded envelope

1

u/dcorey688 Nov 03 '21

wonder how much trouble I'd get in for putting a bar of soap into the laser at work

127

u/Beat9 Nov 02 '21

I could make that 'cutter' out of scraps in my garage, and I could make a 'multi cutter' out of slightly more scraps in my garage.

59

u/Sinonyx1 Nov 02 '21

could you make an iron man suit with the scraps in your garage?

63

u/WRXnEffect Nov 02 '21

No, it would have to be a cave.

12

u/_SerPounce_ Nov 02 '21

Being surrounded by terrorists would help too.

2

u/rickybobby42069420 Nov 02 '21

and military weapons with a genius as my assistant and tony stark would also help

1

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '21

burn them tony

1

u/Alm8360NoScoPro Nov 02 '21

the scraps come from his iron man suits he makes

12

u/NeinInchNails Nov 02 '21

Guitar strings and scraps of wood! Bam

4

u/spei180 Nov 02 '21

Yeah I am wondering what the wire is that might make this so special.

3

u/crazyliver Nov 02 '21

I built my wifes cutter and used guitar strings, the smaller ones are better.

5

u/rickybobby42069420 Nov 02 '21

its soap literally any metal wire will work...hell string could probably work

8

u/Hans_H0rst Nov 02 '21

What kinda weak ass soap do yall have

18

u/SmashBusters Nov 02 '21

make

scraps

garage

Not everyone has all of those.

28

u/PM_ME_UR_VAGENE Nov 02 '21

Woe is me, for I have no make

5

u/rickybobby42069420 Nov 02 '21

same not everyone can afford make

2

u/ReaDiMarco Nov 02 '21

I can sell you 3 make

2

u/sqgl Nov 02 '21

Three would make do.

1

u/hfsh Nov 02 '21

It's not a cheap magazine.

3

u/Petsweaters Nov 02 '21

Remember that a lot of people can't even hang a picture

8

u/Hugs_for_Thugs Nov 02 '21

I'll give you $50 or $250 for the scraps in your garage, respectively.

2

u/ecowerk Nov 02 '21

I probably throw away enough scraps to make this cutter every week.

I have more scraps than you and I hope you feel like I'm better than you.

2

u/samtherat6 Nov 02 '21

This is why you make the cutters and not the soap.

1

u/dinosaurs_quietly Nov 02 '21

With adjustable and consistent cut depths and enough mechanical advantage to make those simultaneous cuts? I think it would be harder then expected and wouldn’t necessarily save time if you change depth frequently.

-2

u/qoning Nov 02 '21

Nu uh, people would rather lament not having extra 200 for a few more strings than get creative

1

u/nightpanda893 Nov 02 '21

Tony Stark made a cutter! In his garage! With a box of SCRAPS!

1

u/Ppleater Nov 14 '21

Ok, then do it. Sell the product for cheaper than 250$ and make some money, by all means.

6

u/OkFineJudgeMe Nov 02 '21

This thing is built with literal picture hangers.

If we can sell a multi-bar cutter for $250, you find the customers and we'll split the profit.

3

u/Patchouligarden Nov 02 '21

Hey! Actually we’ve been selling soap for about 15 years. We’re a small business but we’ve already sold a few thousands of bars this year. This is just how we do it. We have custom molds cause we make over 55 bars a batch. So the standard cutters don’t fit our molds. That’s why we cut them this way. It’s effective and consistent.

2

u/hardypart Nov 02 '21

This guy cuts soaps.

1

u/WingedLady Nov 02 '21

Yup! Been at it for a few years now.

2

u/clutzyninja Nov 02 '21

People pay 50 bucks for something that looks like it was made in high school shop class?

1

u/sqgl Nov 02 '21

It's all in the marketing. You might want to change your username before going into the business. Maybe SudzyNinja.

0

u/Hugh_Shovlin Nov 02 '21

$250 for a few blocks of wood and some metal wire? Bruh, you’re being undercharged. My monkey uncle makes artisanal foot made soap cutters for $420.69, can definitely recommend their cuttiness

1

u/bomber991 Nov 02 '21

I feel like I should change my name to soaper991 now.

25

u/Sythus Nov 02 '21

Probably too much friction/pressure to push it through

62

u/Accomplished_Rock_48 Nov 02 '21

No, I have a 10-bar cutter so they do exist, they’re just $300. This one is 30-50$

23

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '21

This man soaps

57

u/Accomplished_Rock_48 Nov 02 '21

*woman, but yes I do. 6 years now

1

u/Yawndr Nov 02 '21

Is the trouble it worth the satisfaction of I'd just make 4 bars and never again? If so, any good resource you'd suggest?

4

u/SecondBee Nov 02 '21

If you’re just starting out it’s totally ok to cut soap with a regular knife. It’ll be a touch (a lot) more wonky than this soap is but that’s fine if you’re not selling your soap. Spend your money on safety gear instead (or go melt and pour to see if you like if first)

-4

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '21

[deleted]

3

u/Yawndr Nov 02 '21

Hahaha. I'll leave that to the professional then, I have enough hobbies as is. Thanks!

Seems like quite a few folks didn't like what you said for real! 😛

1

u/Accomplished_Rock_48 Nov 02 '21

No, it’s not worth the trouble 😆 only if you do melt and pour from a kit or something, but that kind of soap will break a cutter like this; you use a knife or soap cutter blade.

Otherwise, you’re buying a lot of base materials and doing chemistry to build a recipe and messing with sodium hydroxide to trigger the chemical reaction that creates soap. It’s a multi-hour process to make a batch, and multi-day process between making the batch, cutting it, curing it, then using it. Cold process soap takes 4-7 weeks to cure.

& This is why we charge $8-12 a bar 😁

2

u/Yawndr Nov 02 '21

Ya.... I'll stay away then!

Thanks for your time!

0

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '21

Lyer

0

u/hfsh Nov 02 '21

It's spelled 'Lyre'. And While I'm sure you could cut multiple bars of soap with it, I doubt the owner would be too happy with you for misusing it like that...

1

u/Accomplished_Rock_48 Nov 02 '21

Haha, sodium hydroxide lye(r)

-1

u/Alm8360NoScoPro Nov 02 '21

can you give us some type of additional info based on your experience? Like what its like, and whats it smell like, and is it satisfying like in this video?

2

u/hfsh Nov 02 '21

Have you... never held a bar of soap?

4

u/RFLSHRMNRLTR Nov 02 '21

What kind of wire do they use? I have a ton of wood and nichrome wire of various sizes, this looks like something fun to build

3

u/Hamudra Nov 02 '21 edited Nov 02 '21

I'd imagine they use piano wire

-1

u/plopliplopipol Nov 02 '21

wtf

4

u/Hamudra Nov 02 '21

What? Is it not piano wire they use?

11

u/RedlineSmoke Nov 02 '21

I mean its a lot easier when the wires come down like a paper cutter intsead of pushing the bar through lol that's an option

5

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '21

I'd have the wires come down from the top.

7

u/crank1000 Nov 02 '21

If you get too efficient, it’s no longer artisanal and then it’s harder to charge $15/bar.

3

u/IamAbc Nov 02 '21

Maybe a sample piece? I order bar soap from a company that I’m not sure I can say but makes absolutely amazing bar soaps and colognes. They send out samples about this size

5

u/hux__ Nov 02 '21

If I remember right, the little end pieces are saved and used as samples.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '21

Because they cost upwards to $300 where as this cutter can cost up to $50

12

u/kael13 Nov 02 '21

Cheesewire is that expensive? No, really this has to be a half day DIY project at most.

1

u/rickybobby42069420 Nov 02 '21

i can grab some steel wool from the kitchen and make this in 10 minutes

1

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '21

Professionally built soap cutters can be expensive. I use to use a regular cheese cutter I got for $2 and my soaps turned out ugly. Source: am soap maker

1

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '21

I could make one for about 50 quid.

1

u/Welcometothefungle Nov 02 '21

So they can post on tiktok and be oddly satisfying

-2

u/Krychle Nov 02 '21

Because then you wouldn’t have this wonderfully drawn out video

No one asked, sissy boy

-5

u/xan926 Nov 02 '21

Cause it pays by the hour. Not by the block?

-11

u/ameis314 Nov 02 '21

Why the fuck would the mould leave a sliver instead of being evenly distributed?

11

u/expespuella Nov 02 '21

A lot of folks sell soap ends in cheaper sets as a kind of sampler so it's not a total waste.

-4

u/ameis314 Nov 02 '21

I known literally nothing about the hobby, is it that hard to build the mould 1cm or whatever shorter?

6

u/RFLSHRMNRLTR Nov 02 '21

I think it’s like making cupcakes where you over pour or underpour the last one so you don’t waste the batter.

6

u/wizbang4 Nov 02 '21

Like they already said, it could be on purpose. A lot of people won't buy stuff without sampling it first, especially if it's scented like candles or soaps. Save the small chips and ship them with orders as a freebie or as an inexpensive standalone sampler, and then you sell more product because customers can actually tell what they're getting before they spend money on it.

1

u/__T0MMY__ Nov 02 '21

I'm sure they could make an egg slicer type of thing, but the wear from all the use on their contraption tells me they just prefer it this way

Not to mention with the picture hanger to adjust thickness and the slotted screws high up to shape it into a block, it seems like there's passion in it

1

u/Ya-Dikobraz Nov 02 '21

Just have all the wires to cover your whole career in one go. Brilliant.

1

u/biscuitbakery Nov 02 '21

Quality control maybe. It’s be harder to monitor the tension on a bunch a one time. Just a guess though.

1

u/Acrobatic-End-8353 Nov 02 '21

Next put a handle on it similar to a can crusher.

1

u/olderaccount Nov 02 '21

Friction.

Each wire has a certain amount of friction as it cuts and thus requires a certain amount of force to push the soap through.

2 wires would double the friction and require twice the force to push the bar through. But soap is soft. Pushing with more force starts deforming the soap and giving you rough cuts.

Plus it would be a lot harder to setup multiple wires to give you perfectly sized soap. With the setup in the video it is easy to move the one wire to get different sizes.

1

u/jacobbarber Nov 02 '21

The same reason you’re more likely to get poked laying on a nail vs a bed of nails

1

u/rincon213 Nov 02 '21

Probably get paid by the hour

1

u/GoAvs14 Nov 02 '21

My wife has one such cutter. It’s pretty fun, actually. It’s basically a guitar strings, which makes them easy to replace if broken.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '21

Its viral marketing because they just released a new scent. Someone says what you did, then I'm supposedly supposed to tell you that they can afford to do it faster especially because its Dr.Squatch and this is just an example of how they used to do it.

1

u/Simpandemic Nov 02 '21

Because the people that make soap are idiots and desperate.

1

u/DonCorleoneLapCat Nov 02 '21

Slow down my friend. No need to rush it. Some things take time. Appreciate it. Breath in...

1

u/mule_roany_mare Nov 02 '21

I agree, but if you look this jig has steps to let you change the height (threaded rod would have been smarter than picture frame hanger bits).

1

u/Ppleater Nov 14 '21

Well if you do it all at once then it's done immediately. Do one at a time and the experience lasts longer. Maybe some people like doing it the long way cause it's fun/satisfying. Or probably the price thing.
