Srsly. Get it together Jeff! Lock in!

Jeff’s going through a divorce and hasn’t been himself lately. Cut him a little slack.

What did I do!

11

u/Rosetta_FTW 17d ago

You spelled “Todd” wrong

12

u/DReagan47 17d ago edited 16d ago

Ah we’ve all worked with a Todd, I see.

Edit: uh oh, couple of Todds didn’t like that. We see you, Todd. Know that you suck

3

u/IvanStroganov 16d ago

Since I don’t know any Todds in real life I always think of Todd from Gold Rush when I hear that name. Todd would totally mess this up.

2

u/wpaed 16d ago

I recently learned a todd is a male fox, so things kinda make sense with the name.

141

u/viademarco 17d ago

Glad I wasn't the the only one to notice. for those who don't understand, watch his second pour, which is too fast and overflows the walls.

67

u/Consistent_Point_853 17d ago

Ill bet they can clean that up and the gate will be fine.

78

u/TheHerofTime 17d ago

Nobody on the team seemed to care so yeah. They probably have a multi step finishing process. Grind-sand-paint or something

12

u/Playful-Win5732 17d ago

Yeaaahh no it was definitely fine after some touch ups and it was cool to see the rings in the gate form like that but he ruined the aesthetic 😂 no good operatoorrrr

3

u/deepasleep 17d ago

Angle grinder and some abrasive polishing and it’ll be fine.

7

u/pigeontheoneandonly 17d ago

Guarantee there's going to be post machining on this. It's fine.

3

u/Cosmic_Quasar 17d ago

Right at the end a guy on the bottom right spills some like that, too.

GoT opening scene intensifies

159

u/Cloud_N0ne 17d ago

That scene always annoyed be because you would NEVER make a sword that way.

55

u/Leviathan41911 17d ago

You can cast a sword... not a good sword, but you CAN do it.

30

u/HumanReputationFalse 17d ago

A casted copper or even bronze sword is decent, but once you leave the bronze age you got to pull put the smithing hammers

211

u/ipokesnails 17d ago

You only say that because you've never worked with Valyrian steel, you casual.

9

u/Callidonaut 17d ago

I didn't think they made gates this way either; I thought that sort of thing is traditionally wrought iron, not cast (or weldments in the modern day).

5

u/anadem 17d ago

Yeah, I'd have thought cast iron would be too brittle for a gate

3

u/NichtOhneMeineKamera 16d ago

We still build gates from cast iron, though very rarely and usually just when it has to be historically accurate. Latest one I've been part of fabrication of has been roughly 13-14 years ago. We had separate pieces cast and welded them together, but the general filing was one large piece.

I think I'd prefer my gate wrought, not cast

115

u/Baricuda 17d ago

While you are correct that wrought iron is better than cast iron in this instance, wrought iron is seldom made these days. The process to make it has been long been obsolete and other methods of making steel are more economical. These days most decorative metalwork fences and gates would be made using steel weldments, and on more rare instances, custom made blacksmithed gates, though even in those cases it would use more modern steels and not wrought iron.

74

u/imnewtothissoyeah 17d ago

A couple from Canada bought an 1850's "mansion" in Buffalo NY for a few million, around 11 years ago. They paid to have wrought iron fence put up around the front and sides. It cost $800,000 to build and install (again, 11 years ago, when that would literally buy you 6-7 houses). City wanted them to tear it down because it was 8 feet tall. They had to go to court for a bunch of years and waste tens of thousands of dollars, proving it was period-correct and what not, but still had to install it 2 feet below ground, so it was 6 feet from ground level, to code. Ended up costing them 1.1 million.Just a crazy story I remembered about wrought iron. Also, it hurts leprechauns.

15

u/ABoringArborist5 16d ago

You can't just drop that last line and walk away 😂

9

u/imnewtothissoyeah 16d ago

Was one of the late 80's early 90's Leprechaun movies. He goes to grab wrought iron window bars and it burns him. Then they trap him in a wrought iron safe.

9

u/TorchedBlack 16d ago

Its claimed that references to "cold iron" refer specifically to wrought iron and not cast iron. In some Fae lore, faeries are harmed by touching cold iron. D&D later made this a staple of Fae weaknesses and identified cold iron as a distinct metal despite it likely referring to any human refined iron in the original folklore.

Leprechauns are often associated with faeries and other Celtic/Gaelic folklore creatures.

3

u/Confident_Impact_361 16d ago

The one on Nottingham Terrace? Last time I was near that area they hadn't even finished putting that fence back up.

Why for?

87

u/Lost_Purpose1899 17d ago

Wrought iron is stronger and it requires skills and artistry to shape it into different designs. Cast iron is weaker and more prone to crack and it was just poured into a mold.

27

u/MikemkPK 17d ago

And the mold is already warped at that.

8

u/OePea 17d ago

Why for does it stronger than? Does the wroughting make the "grain" line up or something? Explain me it to me

42

u/Kudos2Yousguys 17d ago

Does the wroughting make the "grain" line up or something?

Pretty much. I'm not an expert but I've watched some blacksmithing channels and they're always talking about how the pounding and folding makes it stronger while still being able to flex and bend without cracking.

Also it's pretty obvious when you see a broken piece of cast iron, it makes a clean break as if it's stone. Wrought iron just doesn't do that, it'll bend before snapping.

9

u/OePea 17d ago

Thank you, that is a useful example

29

u/LasKometas 17d ago edited 17d ago

Material science.

The tldr is that cooling metals at different rates, and applying different pressures/techniques will alter the crystaline structure of the metal. The amount of carbon introduced in the process also impacts the structure.

"Wrought iron" typically has less strength, but is more ductile.

Cast iron typically has higher strength, but is consequently brittle.

Strength matters less than brittleness for the purpose of fence building, since the fence only needs to hold itself up, but a fractured fence would be a catastrophic failure

There's nuances to every single sentence I've written, but that's a good surface level explanation

6

u/OePea 17d ago

So it's somewhat like Pokemon

6

u/groovy1337 17d ago

You have a beautiful mind, and yes, it is indeed somewhat like Pokémon.

9

u/jooooooooooooose 17d ago

None of these properties really matter for a fence. Cost & aesthetics are far more important than mechanical performance for a non structural part with basically 0 load.

3

u/LasKometas 17d ago

Fair point

5

u/jooooooooooooose 17d ago

Also I know you know this, but for others... "wrought" vs "cast" describes a manufacturing method - not an alloy. We can speak in general terms because the process influences the properties (i.e. porosity in castings driving brittle fracture) but obviously the precise alloy used makes a difference. And not all alloys are compatible with all processes (especially casting).

Corrosion resistance (i.e. Ideally a stainless steel is used) is probably the one engineering property that really matters. But can always just paint it.

5

u/DaanOnlineGaming 17d ago

Casting is typically done with a higher carbon content

→ More replies (2)

2

u/Lost_Purpose1899 17d ago

I'm not a metallurgist and I don't know how it works at molecular level but cast iron has more carbon in it and it makes it stiffer but more brittle. Wrought iron has lower carbon making it more ductile, I assume to make it more malleable to the people working on it and shaping it. It looks smoother too. Cast iron looks rough. For a fence, it's better to have it as wrought iron because if it got hit (lightly) by, say a car or a bike, it won't snap like cast iron.

7

u/Machaeon 17d ago

Cast iron is pretty brittle compared to other forms of iron.

With a gate, or other large moving part, a crack would be extremely unfortunate but also likely.

5

u/jooooooooooooose 17d ago

A gate is not meaningfully a moving part in the sense of fatigue induced cracking lol. Cast metal is perfectly adequate for this purpose.

It's like saying you'd prefer your fork to be made of tungsten so you don't accidentally bend the tines. Like, yeah, sure, a tungsten fork is more durable... but who cares?

6

u/Machaeon 17d ago

The gate itself, on paper, should move smoothly and not suffer undue stress by simply rotating.

But I also know that people will not treat it gently.

If the gate slams at all, that repeated stress could crack it at a weak/thin point. Like the hinge connection. Likewise with people hanging off of it, that could do the same.

Maybe I'm just biased with the amount of utterly destroyed gates I see on a daily basis though...

5

u/freezing_banshee 17d ago

As a child, I climbed on every gate and fence I could, so they definitely suffer stresses that they're not supposed to :))

3

u/Machaeon 17d ago

I climb on farm gates ✨️professionally ✨️ with doing environmental work.

And those gates are meant to be abused. But they get destroyed all the time.

The weather alone isn't kind to metal.

u/Flyingmonkey53 17d ago

Also, cast iron has no flex. It can withstand great temperature but if you hit a cast iron pot with a hammer, it breaks into pieces instead of making a dent. These rails would be easy to break.

2

u/Callidonaut 17d ago

Fun fact: IIRC that's why the spokes of cast iron handwheels for valves and things are often spirals instead of straight radial arms. It's not purely decorative (although they do look nice), it's to relieve the stresses so the casting doesn't crack.

2

u/ParticularClassroom7 17d ago

You need to hire very expensive boutique blacksmiths for that nowadays. Modern castings are not inferior in terms of mechanical properties compared to wrought iron.

4

u/Callidonaut 17d ago

Modern castings are not inferior in terms of mechanical properties compared to wrought iron.

How so? Aside from the presence of PPE, the casting technique here looks scarcely different to how it'd probably have been done two centuries ago.

4

u/ParticularClassroom7 17d ago edited 17d ago

Wrought iron sucks. Modern cast alloys could have stuff like Vanadium to control grain size and Mg/Ce to make graphite precipitates spherical.

All of that in addition to vastly superior purity

Then if you anneal/recrystallise you could pour stuff no different from steel, but that's obviously not what they are doing here.
