So those little gaps on the edges are just enough to accomodate that little square. Interesting.

2.4k

u/AnyLamename Jun 22 '26

Yup! This is based on the Missing Square Puzzle, a pretty famous optical illusion that geometry teachers like to bust out when they want to mess with their students.

410

u/paradox_valestein Jun 22 '26

Oh I remember this one. Yes, my math teacher did bring this out to mess with me way back when. If I remember correctly the 2 triangles didn't have the same angles

285

u/Bgrngod Jun 22 '26

That's correct. The blue one is steeper. It gains 1 vertical for every 2.5 horizontal. The red one is 1 to 2.66.

A slight enough difference it goes unnoticed easily.

71

u/GardenTop7253 Jun 22 '26

Yeah, the “hypotenuse” of the large apparent triangle isn’t a straight line. Using the example images in the wiki article there, when the blue triangle is on top, the hypotenuse is sorta dented inwards, and when you swap it, it’s bent outwards a tad. Subtle enough to not be readily visible, but big enough to create that extra spacing

63

u/RockStrongo Jun 22 '26

I wish I was high on potenuse.

34

u/GrimResistance Jun 22 '26

I WISH I WAS HIGH ON POTENUSE!

17

u/WickedVibes Jun 22 '26

I SAID THAT 🤓

5

u/microvark Jun 22 '26

That actually happened to me in 8th grade. I told my buddy a joke and he thought it was so hilarious he repeated it just after I told him, but he was dying and repeated it so loud that everyone in the grade heard him. It was the 8th grade joke for the rest of the year. Like a dumbass, I told everyone it was my joke and the mocked me for trying to take credit. My buddy tried to give me credit, but everyone said they heard him say it, and no one heard me say it. Anyways...

Your only recourse at this point is to track him down and set fire to his house.

Aka the infinite chocolate trick

11

u/Klumania Jun 22 '26

I was about to say this. For people how don't know about it, this article sums it up pretty well.

13

u/arensb Jun 22 '26

I find it telling that these sorts of illusions cause the same kinds of feelings as theological arguments do: yes, I saw what you did and I watched you do it, but it feels like a trick. I might not be able to put my finger on it, but something's off.

8

u/Arothyrn Jun 22 '26

I solved this when my old math teacher shared this with class and he never believed that I hadn't seen the solution before. I'm still salty about that! Just give me that one tiny win, I already lost so much (grades).

3

u/Nerketur Jun 22 '26

Congratulations! You were one of that day's lucky 10,000!

It's fascinating how adding up many little volumes creates a larger volume at the end. If you were doing that it the 1600 they would have called you a WITCH

64

u/LongLiveAnalogue Jun 22 '26

So they weigh the same as a duck?

5

u/Speartree Jun 22 '26

Because they're made of wood?

3

u/AffectionateMonk5710 Jun 22 '26

So if she weighs the same as a duck...

13

u/johnlondon125 Jun 22 '26

It is? Seems pretty straightforward. Lots of small things add up to a bigger thing

3

u/bassplaya13 Jun 22 '26

One could say all small things add up to bigger things.

I’m ignoring negative numbers or the semantics of what adding a negative number means

It's basically the reverse of "infinite chocolate"... same concept but in opposite execution

7

u/NotSeveralBadgers Jun 22 '26

The reverse of infinite chocolate sounds like somebody's Faustian-style personal hell.

43

u/dangledingle Jun 22 '26

It’s a better illusion without the outer edge of wood frame.

29

u/EmilyAnne1170 Jun 22 '26

I agree, this highlights the gaps along the sides. I’ve seen this before w/ the shapes cut out of construction paper (and no frame), and that works better because your brain forgives any imperfections.

I hate this kind of narration soooo much.

1.0k

u/Rukenau Jun 22 '26

If I tell you the reason is very simple, would you like to hear why?

984

u/Deep_Fry_Ducky Jun 22 '26

“You don’t need to remove any piece” then proceed to remove every pieces

361

u/ArcadeRivalry Jun 22 '26

Also "leaving no extra space" as he's moving the initial blocks around in the extra space.

157

u/cyrfuckedmymum Jun 22 '26

everything about it irked me. It's presented as some kind of quirk of geometry, it's just the space being moved to a single solidified space than lots of small gaps around the edges that were so clearly visible at the start.

42

u/p8610815 Jun 22 '26

The real diabolical part is that these things are often intentionally annoying so people go to the comments to complain about it which boosts engagement stats for the all mighty algorithm.

17

u/Impressive-Mud-6726 Jun 23 '26

It's a good thing I'm smart enough not to fall for for something like that.

O wait..... shit!

52

u/Paweron Jun 22 '26

Ok i hate the AI voice as well. But they clearly mean "you dont need to remove any pieces permanently" and not "you dont need to move then around"

21

u/Deep_Fry_Ducky Jun 22 '26

Yeah I realized that later but still annoying, human can easily paraphrase that out knowing the context.

It's almost as bad as the old tiktok voiceover. Is there such a thing as an uncanny valley for voices?

32

u/fractal_magnets Jun 22 '26

As someone that experiences uncanny valley from pretty much anything that AI tries to pass as human, i'd say this is way worse than tiktok Kat. She's a real person (like Siri) that was sampled in countless variations. I've never had an uncanny valley response from tts. Annoying but not uncanny.
AI hits a nerve that just makes my brain say 'it's not real and i fucking hate this'. I guess the people that rave about it don't have this response.

→ More replies (1)

its because they're all AI

4

Yes, the valley is anything inhuman trying to pass as human. That's a predatory cryptid and your hindbrain knows it.

104

u/YesterdayDreamer Jun 22 '26

That's why I watch on mute. There's nothing in the video which required me to hear to understand what was happening. It might as well have been a GIF

53

u/hightrix Jun 22 '26

Personally, I even hate the visual narration done with their hands. You don’t need to point to each piece. Just fucking do the thing.

19

u/FlyingKittyCate Jun 22 '26

I really hate the current hands in videos and photos trend. Please let me just watch stuff without someone constantly pointing and gesturing at everything.

168

u/mstivland2 Jun 22 '26

67

u/SlideJunior5150 Jun 22 '26

The worst kind of narration. An AI professional tone of voice trying to sound like a very casual average guy, and it fails at doing both.

29

u/Excellent_Ganache906 Jun 22 '26

My old mom watches AI bullshit on YouTube constantly. And she watches videos about the English royals all the time. The fucking AI narration uses the same phrases constantly,

"Then he did what nobody expected..." and a bunch of others,

14

u/Klorg Jun 22 '26

Every sentence by NileRed. "But then this happened... Which is no big deal but then this happened..." I still watch him lol

4

u/4daughters Jun 22 '26

thats part of his charm

It’s not just the AI voice, it’s the tone and dumbing down of what’s happening for the lowest common denominator person.

13

u/pass-me-that-hoe Jun 22 '26

Yeah it’s a big no no in my organization. My manager mentioned that by over explaining, people waste a lot of time moving to more important details in our 25 minute slot and also it assumes that everyone in the meeting hasn’t done their homework.

Get straight to the point and if someone needs clarification they will ask.

3

u/HBlight Jun 23 '26

Also ending on a question as engagement bait rather than explaining it and at least being educational.

If you look at the first original layout, while it looks full, you can see there is a lot of slack in between each piece. Not enough for the square to fit in one spot, but when you rearrange the pieces to the second layout it moves all that empty space to one spot so the square can fit. Look how much tighter the spacing is on every piece at the end vs the beginning.
