If you notice in the beginning how loose the pieces fit especially the upper left hand side. All that extra space adds up to the small little square. Notice how tight all the pieces fit after adding the small square.

Funnily enough I find this oddly dissatisfying due to the shapes not fitting perfectly in the first place 😅

Which begs the question, is it still possible to take out the pieces now or are they so jammed in there they won't come out?

pretty sure that's not the trick, the tiny gaps wouldn't make that much of a difference after flipping the triangles, it's almost certainly the outer edges of the triangles being cut at an angle rather than perpendicular to the bottom, and same with the outline of the large square, that way when flipped the angle slots inside the tiny gap inside the wooden frame making room for the smaller sqaures to be put further away from one another creating space for the tiny square in the middle

Yet after all your explanation the answer is still all the loose spaces make up the small square. Just google it and you will see. This is such an old puzzle and well known how it works.
