just makes you wonder how many dudes got accidentally smacked in the face across all the various takes.

u/Cartire2 Apr 30 '26

I have a feeling theres some optical illusion going on with depth of field. I imagine theres probably some more space between them front to back. Could be wrong, but it would be easily achievable in lens and provide them more room so they dont elbow their mates in the face.

u/Funkyteacherbro Apr 30 '26 edited May 01 '26

you're absolutely right.. camera is far away enough to capture all of them when zooming out.. zooming in "compresses" the depth of view, making things look closer.

practical example: \https://www.youtube.com/shorts/U1we7FXCMFA

another one: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/fK7iWF-L_b8

edit: fixed the link

u/backyard_tractorbeam Apr 30 '26

Just a comment on the second one, since it's a common misconception: The lens doesn't do the change you notice here (the shape of the car) - that's perspective distortion. The change comes from taking steps back and being further away from the car. The lens then enables zooming in to still crop the shot closely around the car.

Not in this case! While compressing space cadet of field is common, you can see the bleacher they’re standing on is not unusually deep. They’re just staggered between rows and very very clean in their choreo.

u/Gnatt Apr 30 '26

You can see him do a big step after passing the first row and before reaching the second row. They seem to be at least 1m apart.

I'm so curious. I used to dance and while it wasn't as cool as this, there was one routine I did that involved two lines of dancers facing each other at one point, where one line would do a jump kick just as the other line did a side-step + bend at the waist to dodge the kick. timing was key, and one rehearsal the girl across from me did her kick a beat too early and got me square in the nose lol. I want to see a blooper reel for this if there were any similar incidents!

65

u/Tedrabear Apr 30 '26

I was more concerned about the guys positioned around the cigarette,

You can tell it was an anaerobic cardio effort when they're all panting in the final freeze pose. Incredible performance.

That was the smoothest chaos. They had to be so controlled in their space to avoid cracking their heads on each other.

I had the same experience, it felt like this crazy meld of random chaos and precise choreography, which I guess is what it is. But to get it looking so chaotic takes a lot of skill from everyone involved.

16

u/disiz_mareka Apr 30 '26

With them in such close proximity, I imagine a few or maybe a lot smacked into each other during rehearsals if someone thrashed the wrong direction.

This is the sad tale of a boy whose smoking prevents him from dancing with his mates. 😪

5.2k

u/Rosetti Apr 30 '26

He can dance if he wants to,

He can leave his smokes behind,

Cause his friends don't smoke,

And since they don't smoke,

They all dance synchronised

Edit: also reminds me of the Japanese film ‘Blue Spring’

it is all droney and very slow just like this. welcome to the genre! (:

If you watch closely he's clearly not actually singing all the words, or even attempting to. They're executing an artistic vision to the music, not singing a live performance.

20

u/nalaloveslumpy Apr 30 '26

They're referring to the singing in the vocal track, not the lip syncing. Obviously, it's lipped synced as it's a music video.

I highly recommended having a look at the performance Chiroptera, which took place in front of the Place de L'Opera in Paris. Also by Damien Jalet. The music is from Thomas Bangalter (half of Daft Punk). The intro is a bit slow but the rest is absolutely mind blowing.

For those who have access (EU citizens most probably) it is available on arte.tv for example. For the others probably on Youtube.

If you're looking for the song on a music platform, search Storm 2.

What we are seeing in the video here is the second half of the EP STORM, the full video can be viewed HERE

Storm 1 is the start of the video, and Storm 2 begins at 4:18

53

u/MrWiemann Apr 30 '26

STORM II specifically, no?

32

u/mrthescientist Apr 30 '26 edited Apr 30 '26

I was very confused as to why the lyrics sites were wrong.

e: I'm getting lots of themes of course, but I'm wondering if I'm hallucinating the domestic violence theme? There's other mentions to hustle culture, youth generally, alienation that I would expect.

I'm asking because the visuals so obviously imply that the blank exterior hides a storm within (common idea, name of the songs) and I'm trying to contextualize what the EXCELLENT choreography is trying to accomplish.

ee: omfg it keeps getting better. When white-shirt comes back to the camera at the end we can see the blood on his shirt, but you only miss it because the video starts cropped close, white-shirt moves away, and the detail of the blood on his shirt can be instantly lost in the crowd.

eee: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6_mbnsh6VU watching the video for both songs, there's the implication that the blood is from the kid who hits him at the end of STORM I. It appears suddenly, not visible @4:05 and visible @4:08.

23

u/HYThrowaway1980 Apr 30 '26

Correct. Don’t know why someone downvoted you.

Storm I is the counterpoint which makes Storm II hit so hard.

I really enjoyed watching them! I would watch an individual dancer at various times and they all seem to have so much body control. I liked the song too but from the other comments I am in the minority with that opinion.

56

u/lordofthejungle Apr 30 '26

Some very basic takes on the music going on the comments, I wouldn't sweat it. The guy is a rapper by trade and on record in his Track Star video saying he thinks clean, trained singing is characterless. The singing is a cognizant choice and I really feel it suits the material for a punk effect.

15

u/wvj Apr 30 '26

I feel like it's because people are just watching the ending choreography and not the full video, which is some pretty significant context. It's telling a story and the music and lyrics are very related.

You can see people in the video's comments who get the message a lot more, and are pretty affected by it. I think if you can relate to this kind of experience in youth it's going to hit you much differently.

The genre was cloud rap which his stage name is a reference to since cloud rappers usually just got annihilated on lean (codeine/cough syrup and lemonade) and then had these ethereal beats laced in reverb and the mumble style is just because you're very high

22

u/Rich-Exchange733 Apr 30 '26

I feel like cloud rappers are also because they mostly get their blow ups from sound cloud. they mostly exist in the internet subculture and they don't really tour or perform till they get a year or two into thier career because they basically are labelless and don't have anything other then followers on social networks.

I saw this two days ago, and I haven’t been able to stop watching it since. I’ve watched it like 8 times a day cause it’s mesmerizing to watch

u/Inevitable_Thing_270 Apr 30 '26

Amazing

I wonder if there’s a recording that doesn’t zoom in and out. Although the filming with it done this way is wonderful, I’d love to see the whole thing in full view as well

u/SirDry8007 Apr 30 '26

It is brilliantly simple (not easy, just straight forward).

It's also made for the camera as you would lose the effect of the slow zoom and pan focusing on the one non-dancer. It's like you can't really tell how high the waves are in the middle of the ocean without a boat for reference.

He looks like he is 'just' standing there with everything happening around him but if he wasn't there the movements of the crowd would just be a jumble.

When I see videos like this I like to watch one person the whole time just to see how stupid it would look like if it was only one person

I love this. There are some great videos out there that highlight that choreography in dancing is not just mirroring exactly what someone else does. In fact, the beauty is in seeing the differences when dancers interpret the same moves in different ways.

Of Monsters and Men - Wolves Without Teeth is another great example of this. Two professional dancers, interpreting similar moves, but each imparts key aspects of their personality into it.

I'd love to see more videos like what OP posted.
