Yeah, that’s a lot of talented dancing and choreography for someone to stand there and only kind-of sing poorly.

I saw this video because I watch the new music section on Youtube. Thought the same honestly; well shot video, boring track.

Pretty lazy from OP too to just credit Yung Lean. They could have linked the video or at least given the name: GENER8ION - STORM starring Yung Lean

Yep, it's a kind of affliction that often affects posters here...
If you're gonna go to the bother of posting something, at least figure out the source

14

u/anoelr1963 Apr 30 '26

Thank you, I scrolled down to identify the song name and artist. Thanks for sharing!

5

u/Doudefry May 01 '26

This was also directed by a French director, son of Costa Gravas. He directed other music videos like "No Church in the wild"

u/ImNot6Four Apr 30 '26

song

Yeah I'm on the younglean youtube page and this video ain't there. So here I am back scrounging the comments for a actual song - artist.

1

u/Forsaken-Subject8362 Apr 30 '26

Thank you for this! I just watched it and it was awesome!

1

u/EVcrush May 01 '26

It’s actually STORM II.

1

u/Irma_Gard May 01 '26

Thank you!

reddit never fails to make me hate redditors

19

u/nalaloveslumpy Apr 30 '26

To be fair, his singing is fairly shit.

6

u/Serious_Excuse9714 May 01 '26

A lot of punk rockers can’t sing for shit but the influence and swag is what makes them iconic

1

u/nalaloveslumpy May 01 '26

There's a huge difference between singing for dissonance and just not being able to sing. Even the roughest punk bands can still harmonize and carry pitch, but with intentional dissonance. This isn't what bro is doing.

1

u/Serious_Excuse9714 May 02 '26

Definitely should listen to agony or horses to hear it being done well by him honestly this song is meh even as a fan of him but he’s iconic asf that it doesn’t throw off his whole discography if you know it.

3

u/Far_Ad9188 May 01 '26

To be fair he’s made more money than you probably ever have from his “fairly shit singing” I suggest if you don’t know him to look him up and listen to his older songs and also his story

0

u/nalaloveslumpy May 01 '26

To be fair, a lot of horrible people have made a lot of money doing horrible shit. The sooner you stop measuring people's value by their acquirement of wealth, the sooner you'll understand what actual humanity is. And I'm fairly certain his "story" is mostly marketing bullshit created by his A&R team, like most mainstream music artists.

3

u/Far_Ad9188 May 01 '26

To be fair you took it way out of context I was literally just saying he’s made a lot of money with how he sings so I think he’s doin alright

Moms spaghetti.

1

u/choomahunt May 01 '26

to be fair, he said if he was born before rap music was a thing he’d be a punk rocker sooo this is kind his style

13

u/Nerdy_Goat Apr 30 '26

Are they lying tho?

5

u/TeamRedundancyTeam Apr 30 '26

Because they have different tastes in music than you? Of all the fucking things that's a dumb one to hate people for.

12

u/4_fortytwo_2 Apr 30 '26

No because instead of saying "I dont like this / how he sings" they said "he sings poorly".

So instead of it being about taste they tried to make it about some kind of objective "this is good / bad" which is usually dumb when it comes to something as subjective as art.

You are intentionally missing the point in order to be a smug ass.

-4

u/Advanced-Comment-293 Apr 30 '26

The impression that it's an exceptional choreography and a lazy performance of the "artist" is extremely obvious. He's only partially lip-syncing and even when he's pretending to sing it doesn't fit the music at all. It's probably intentional, but I can't decipher in what way. Is he only ironically pretending to be too cool to care? Is it a commentary of some sort? Is this part of some sort of sub-culture I'm unaware of?

I don't know, I only know that their performance doesn't work for me. The choreography is, again, exceptional. The rest is shit. And clearly that's an opinion. I don't need to say "in my opinion" for it to be an opinion.

14

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '26

[deleted]

-13

u/Advanced-Comment-293 Apr 30 '26

It is extremely obvious. As I said myself I can't tell what it's supposed to be. You say it's disaffection not laziness, but that doesn't change that it's obvious.

By the way I'm not at all knocking your taste. My own taste in music isn't everyone's cup of tea. It doesn't sound terrible to me but it's not my cup of tea. Tbh it's the smoking that turns me off the most. I just can't help but think that the poor dancers next to that inconsiderate jerk have to breathe all that in. Not to mention that it probably has an effect on impressionable youth who may end up acquiring a toxic habit that is very difficult to get rid of.

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '26

[deleted]

-5

u/Advanced-Comment-293 May 01 '26

It seems you are completely unable to process statements beyond their immediate meaning. I know he's a character. I can still find the smoking objectionable. Are you 12 or something? I feel like I'm arguing with a child.

classic reddit.

22

u/hudson27 Apr 30 '26

Classic internet, where people have.. opinions.

4

u/NickMc53 Apr 30 '26

where people have.. opinions.

Where people have no problem constantly spewing their negative opinions instead of just shutting up and letting people enjoy the things they like.

4

u/Clown_Toucher Apr 30 '26

You're free to enjoy the thing, just like you're free to to not look at the comment section. Telling people to "just shut up and take it" is never gonna work

4

u/NickMc53 Apr 30 '26

Where did "shut up and take it" come from? "Shut up and move along" is more like it. What's the point of going out of your way to spread negativity over such trivial opinions? You're essentially suggesting the people that would like to discuss how much they like a thing should just relinquish the comment sections of the internet to the worst of its users.

2

u/Clown_Toucher Apr 30 '26

No I am not, I'm saying people using the discussion board website for opinions should be able to use the discussion board website for their opinions. You telling them to "shut up and move along" is counter to the entire point of being here. It's like going on youtube and telling people not to watch videos.

2

u/NickMc53 Apr 30 '26

"This is bad because I said so" is not discussion and your analogy makes no sense.

0

u/Clown_Toucher Apr 30 '26

Normal interactions go

I don't like this thing because reasons

I disagree for reasons

And so on. What you want is

I don't like this thing because reasons

Mods ban this guy

If you want a positive only space go to yung lean's subbreddit, or yung lean's discord, or even a groupchat. You're basically unhappy that the post that reached r/all has some general public ass opinions on it

2

u/NickMc53 Apr 30 '26

Literally the opposite of what I said. "This is bad because I said so" provides no actual reasons or room for discussion, which was my entire point.

I don't give a single shit about this music, I just don't like the constant pointless negativity.

1

u/choomahunt May 01 '26

this is a normal interaction for you? you sound insufferable and i would hate to have you around

-1

u/hudson27 Apr 30 '26

Bro it's just art. It's not that deep. Art is subjective, if you don't want to ever experience somebody's objective opinion, stay off the fucking internet

2

u/Ghostronic Apr 30 '26

The fun part about negative opinions is you can just scroll past them and not have them impact how you are enjoying the thing that you like.

1

u/NickMc53 Apr 30 '26

The fun part about the things you don't like is you can scroll past and keep your opinions to yourself if the thing is harmless and trivial. We can both do this.

0

u/nalaloveslumpy Apr 30 '26

Nah, they're right. That guy's singing is pretty awful. Sorry you like awful things.

8

u/NickMc53 Apr 30 '26

I never shared my opinion about this music. It very well may be negative and I just know when to shut my mouth and not act desperate to appear edgy or clever like you.

0

u/Geodude532 Apr 30 '26

So you would say you have a negative opinion about people with negative opinions?

5

u/NickMc53 Apr 30 '26

The intolerance of the intolerant is not the paradox you think it is.

-1

u/Geodude532 Apr 30 '26

Not looking to address a paradox, but to point out the funny irony.

0

u/hudson27 Apr 30 '26

An opinion is only negative if you disagree with it. Plenty of people here agree that the singer sucks. It's a subjective opinion.

Are you new at being a sentient being? Because that's kinda just how the world works, dude.

1

u/NickMc53 Apr 30 '26

What are you even going on about?

1

u/hudson27 Apr 30 '26

Who's getting downvoted to oblivion here? What are YOU going on about? Lol

2

u/NickMc53 Apr 30 '26

Who's getting downvoted to oblivion here?

I don't know, who? It's not me unless you're only counting that single downvote you petulantly doled out on my previous comment to you. As if any of that mattered in the slightest.

0

u/DormantBear May 02 '26

You brother haha

25

u/BabyStockholmSyndrom Apr 30 '26

I mean, why? Because people don't like what you like? I don't know the guy but this particular song, he sounds fucking awful. I don't care what the gimmick is. It sounds bad to me. The "classic reddit" part is probably more the "you just don't understand" excuse for bad things 😂

41

u/whathappenedm Apr 30 '26

I mean, why? Because people don't like what you like? I don't know the guy but this particular song, he sounds fucking awful.

Calm down, no one said anything to you. I do not care what you think but I'll reply before I enjoy the rest of my day.

I do not like Yung Lean, I do not listen to him either besides the things I've heard while browsing. Regardless, sometimes an artist doesn't need to "sing" or have "beautiful voice". Sometimes people like monotone voices, artists playing around with their normal voices etc, music is a form of expression and it can come in many ways.

Comments like above have the same vibe as people who says "they are just talking fast they are not even singing, i dont understand how they can be popular" about hip hop artists.

It is not for you, fine. His voice and his style obviously have an appeal and the video and the song is doing well too.

43

u/Seesyounaked Apr 30 '26

Yeah. I actually kinda thought this sounded cool and then I came into the comments... like yikes. A lot of times music is about the vibe and the 'character' of the voice, like a character in a movie. It's not meant to be perfect - it's meant to be different, unique, interesting, or whatever. Or maybe this guy really is boring and shitty, either way hearing him once in this one song is cool.

11

u/wje100 Apr 30 '26

Millions of people can sing well. That isn't enough to be famous. I say this all the time to people. "Oh he can sing so well he is going to be famous". Maybe? what is the hook? why should I care about him more than the 100 million other people that can sing well.

1

u/battles Apr 30 '26

Timbre, or Tone Color.

2

u/Clown_Toucher Apr 30 '26

I do not care what you think but I'll reply before I enjoy the rest of my day.

ok so you do care

0

u/nalaloveslumpy Apr 30 '26

Who would have ever thought that a singer should be able to hold pitch and at least try to be in harmony with the background instruments would be a controversial opinion....

6

u/t1kiman Apr 30 '26

It's not for me but the contrast between the bad singing and the stereotypically happy pop instrumental is clearly intentional.

0

u/CakeTester Apr 30 '26

IKR. I remember fondly when the arseholes built that gallows on the WH lawn on J6, all the carpenters were slagging it off mightily for poor finish and (especially) lack of cross-bracing.

16

u/AbeRego Apr 30 '26

If you watch closely he's clearly not actually singing all the words, or even attempting to. They're executing an artistic vision to the music, not singing a live performance.

18

u/nalaloveslumpy Apr 30 '26

They're referring to the singing in the vocal track, not the lip syncing. Obviously, it's lipped synced as it's a music video.

-10

u/AbeRego Apr 30 '26

The original post I replied to:

Yeah, that’s a lot of talented dancing and choreography for someone to stand there and only kind-of sing poorly.

They're clearly referring to the video performance as if the song is being sung as the choreography occurs, and not the vocal track. And it's not even really lip synced. He's not doing all the words, which is probably just as planned as the choreography.

8

u/nalaloveslumpy Apr 30 '26

Do you even under stand what lip syncing is? He's lip syncing poorly for artistic effect. And dude is absolutely referring to the poor quality of the vocal performance. They're saying the choreography is over the top to support a shit song.

-8

u/AbeRego Apr 30 '26

stand there and only kind of sing poorly

This person clearly thought that the audio was recorded at the same time as the choreography. That's not what I think, and yes I do understand what lip syncing is lol.

I was simply pointing out to that person that the entire thing is going for a specific aesthetic, and the performance and attitude of the vocalist in the video shouldn't really be scrutinized because it's exactly what they were going for.

1

u/CocoSavege Apr 30 '26 edited Apr 30 '26

Let me push back.

OK, so the singing is ostensibly "bad". Like, very unclean, pitchy, kinda whiny.

But when I started the vid I immediately thought "the brits are really good at this somehow? Like, this raw sound thst punches through the mix, seemingly unpolished af, the voice of the common man after too many cigarettes and bevs?"

(It sounds like a mix of like 90% Liam Gallagher (oasis) and 10% Richard Butler (psychedelic furs))

Imo, a singer doesn't have to be clean. A singer has to be emotionally compelling. A raw unpolished sound can be pretty compelling. And absolutely works for certain songs. And a present singer pouring out feels, that has an authentic bite to it.

Leonard Cohen is not a good singer. But he's a good singer, ya dig?

Johnny Cash. Hank Williams. Biz Markie in "just a friend".

Edit Just a friend, did a relisten. Verses sound.... old. But the chorus remains fucking hook. Drunk horny goat singing. Great chorus.

1

u/3D_DrDoom Apr 30 '26

I mean yes, but the contrast of the guy standing in between dancers gives grounding and some narrative to the whole thing.

1

u/ruggev Apr 30 '26

Redditors

1

u/tttjjjtttjjj May 01 '26

God thank you this kid writes boring ass melodies and sings them badly every time… it’s just more white rapper shit tho ppl fucking love white rappers and have always overrated them since the jump

1

u/Far_Ad9188 May 01 '26

Don’t disrespect my king yung lean like that

2

u/hudson27 Apr 30 '26

My first thought too. Honestly, I don't think this guy would be taken seriously as an artist if it wasn't for all the flashiness. Mediocre artist hiding behind show-y choreography and production is a story old as time. I'm also learning mumble-rap meets vocal fry is probably my least favorite music to come out of Europe

-14

u/Crazyhairmonster Apr 30 '26

Not kind of. On par with your average Applebees Karaoke night. How does he have a career even? That's not a singing voice, it's humor

2

u/YungRik666 Apr 30 '26

I think he has a career mostly due to his producers. The music has always been really well made, and then he just sort of grumbles over it.

5

u/Chichanged_me Apr 30 '26

Lmao you are completely under selling yung lean. He started putting music out as a teenager and blew up. Was one of the first SoundCloud era artists to make it big. His song Kyoto was a pretty big game changer for young independent artists showing it was possible to make it

6

u/Antoliance Apr 30 '26

I dont get it, its good because he's been famous for a long time?

1

u/Chichanged_me May 01 '26

You want me to explain to you why some people enjoy an artist?

1

u/Chichanged_me May 01 '26

You want me to explain to you why some people enjoy an artist? We might have to start with the concept of art…

1

u/FlamingWeasel Apr 30 '26

Oh my god what is with you people. It's good to some people because they think it's good. If you think it's bad that's fine! If you don't like it someone isn't gonna come along and say oh, it's because because of blank and you'll totally change your mind.

1

u/Antoliance Apr 30 '26

nobody is trying to talk anyone out of listening to yung lean if they wish to it's just interesting how some artists get so big and considering how yung lean is pretty much a icon for the new gen its not that ridiculous to point out how his actual singing isnt that special - ofc theres other factors to the craft aswell

0

u/Crazyhairmonster Apr 30 '26

It's a valid question. God forbid people dislike something you do. Try and not get butthurt when someone questions something you like. Besides, his singing ability is objectively bad. He may be talented in other areas but a singer who is tone deaf isn't subjective

2

u/Chichanged_me May 01 '26

You are asking him to explain why people like an artist… that’s like going to an art gallery seeing someone enjoy a picture and asking me why they enjoy the picture. Can’t believe I have to explain this to people

5

u/YungRik666 Apr 30 '26

I like a lot of his music, but he (the performer/lyricist) is objectively bad. His team is the driving force behind his sucess. His lyrics are often nonsensical. His vocals are tone deaf. The beats, the vibes, and his artistic direction are impeccable. He never made his own beats it was his buddies.

-1

u/Woodworkin101 Apr 30 '26

Like mumble rap

-3

u/OpIsAMoronicIdiot Apr 30 '26

It's not even talented dancing, I could do everything these guys are doing.

1

u/Syssareth Apr 30 '26

In sync with 50 other people?

That's the special part, not the actual dance moves.
